title Parametric Development of Problem Descriptions

summary This paper addresses the development of parametric models in contemporary architectural practice. A parametric model can be regarded as a representation of a solution space and in order to structure this, a description of the problem is required. Architectural design tasks are typically ill structured, the goals may not be defined and the means unknown. Moving from an incomplete problem description to a functional parametric model is a difficult task. In this paper the aim is to demonstrate that through a combination of knowledge acquisition and capture a parametric model can develop from an incomplete problem description. This demonstration draws on existing strands of design theory which are then used to outline a theoretical framework. This framework is then used to examine a case study of a live project and practical examples of the described theory in action are given. The practical observations are the result of a case study involving the author as a participant and observer working with Populous to develop a cladding geometry solution for Lansdowne Road Stadium in Dublin (now know as the AVIVA STADIUM).

title Contextual ontology support as external knowledge representation for building information modelling

summary There is an increasing awareness of formal ontologies in knowledge-intense problem domains in the AEC industry. This paper analyzes the general use of ontologies, points to the importance of context-dependent ontology descriptions in AEC, and describes the use and management of multiple (external) ontologies as knowledge management tools within a complex information model of a building performance assessment tool CLIP (Computational support for Lifecycle Integral Performance assessment), previously developed by the authors. The paper provides a discussion of our approach, analysis of the benefits and limitations of external ontologies, suggestions for further development and research areas for the integration of multiple AEC knowledge representations.

title Analysing the significance of problem solving expertise and computational tool proficiency in design ideation

summary This paper presents a pilot study to analyze the role of problem solving expertise (PSE) and computational tool proficiency (CTP) of expert and novice architects in the ideation process within a distributed cognition environment. To analyze PSE, we studied the frequency of occurrence of unique problem solving tasks per limited commitment mode (LCM) revisit. We also devised a quantitative measure for analyzing CTP based on the frequency of unique and normally distributed modeling activities per design process flows for a parametric modeling tool. In our study that involved freehand sketching and parametric modeling as two external representations used in the ideation process, we concluded that expert architects have higher levels of both PSE and CTP than novices.

summary The emergence of parametric generative design tools and prototyping manufacturing technology led to radical changes in architectural morphologies. This change increased the opportunity to develop innovative smart geometries. Integrating these algorithms in the parametric softwares led to variations in building design concepts increasing alternatives and decreasing the repetitive work previously needed in conventional CAD software. The chosen software in this research is Generative Components (GC). It is a software design tool for an associative and parametric design platform. It is tested for using Global Variables with associative functions during the concept creation and form GC comprises features. The results presented in this research may be considered an introduction to the smart geometry revolution. It deals with the generative design which applied in the design process from conceptual design phase, defining the problem, exploring design solutions, then how to develop the design phases. Office building is a building type which encourages new forms that needs computational processes to deal with repetitive functions and modular spaces and enclosed in a flexible creative structural skin. Generative design helps the office buildings to be arranged, analysed, and optimized using parameters in early stages in design process. By the end of the research, the use of the smart geometry in a high rise office building is defined and explained. The research is divided into three parts, first a summary of the basic theories of office buildings design and the sustainable requirements that affect it, and should be integrated. Secondly, the previous experiences in generating office buildings by Norman foster and Sergio Araya. At last, a case study is proposed to test and evaluate the use of the parametric generative methodology in designing an office building with specific emphasis on the function, environmental aspects and form generation using Generative Components (GC) Software.

summary Over the last decade, paradigm shifts in the philosophy of space-time relations, the change from space-time to spatio-temporality, caused significant changes in the design field, and introduced new variations and discourses for parametric approaches in architecture. Among all the discourses, parametricism is likely the most spectacular one. The founder of parametricism, Patrik Schumacher (2009) describes it as “a new style,” which has “the superior capacity to articulate programmatic complexity;” and “aesthetically, it is the elegance of ordered complexity in the sense of seamless fluidity.” In its theoretical background, Schumacher (2011) affiliates this style with the philosophy of autopoiesis, the philosophy that stands between making and becoming. Additionally, parametricism concerns not only the physical geometry in making of form; but also discusses the relational and causal aspects in becoming of form. In other words, it brings the aesthetic qualities in making through the topological intelligence behind becoming. Regarding that, parametricism seems an effective way of managing /creating complex topologies in form-related issues. However, when it comes to practice, there are some challenging points of parametricism in large-scale design studies. Thus, this work underlines that the dominance of elegance for urban planning has the potential of limiting the flexible and dynamic topology of the urban context, and objectifying the whole complex urban form as an over-designed product. For an aesthetic inquiry into urban parametricism, this paper highlights the challenging issues behind the aesthetic premises of parametricism at the urban design scale. For that, Kartal Master Plan Design Proposal by Zaha Hadid Architects (2006) will be discussed as an exemplary work.

summary An environmental crisis in Australia in early 2009 prompted the architectural design work considered in this paper. Bushfires ravaged the Victorian hinterland, destroying lives and families. The crises inspired me to explore the ACADIA 2009 conference theme, reForm(): how technologies transform the ways in which buildings and spaces perform, act and operate. This paper explores architectural design in distressed contexts and some design technologies used to formalize new housing development and respond to the environmental crisis.

title Performative Building Skin Systems: A Morphogenomic Approach Towards Developing Real-Time Adaptive Building Skin Systems

summary Morphogenomics, a relatively new research area, involves understanding the role played by information regulation in the emergence of diverse natural and artificially generated morphologies. Performative building skin systems as a bottom-up parametric formation of context aware interdependent, ubiquitously communicating components leading to the development of continually performative systems is one of the multi-scalar derivations of the aforementioned Morphogenomic understanding. The agenda of adaptations for these building skins specifically corresponds to three domains of adaptation: structural, behavioral and physiological adaptations resulting in kinetic adaptability, energy generation, conservation, transport and usage principles as well as material property based changes per component. The developed skins adapt in real time via operating upon ubiquitous communication and data-regulation protocols for sensing and processing contextual information. Computational processes and information technology based tools and techniques such as parametric design, real-time simulation using game design software, environmental information mapping, sensing and actuating systems coupled with inbuilt control systems as well as manufacturing physical models in collaboration with praxis form a vital part of these skin systems. These experiments and analysis based on developing intrinsic inter-dependencies between contextual data, structure and material logistics thus lay the foundation for a new era of continually performing, self powering, real-time adaptive intelligent building skin systems.

summary This paper claims that a speculative design space exists within the crafting of digital rule-based associations in parametric modeling environments, which promises to support potent contemporary designs in architecture. In addition to reviewing some diagrammatic frameworks located within the techniques of associative design modeling, this paper also details a project for a research-oriented practice based on the development of a registry of digital diagrams called “re-usables.” Working with “re-usable templates” of association, a precise sequence of design logic is invented for each project, while some of its aspects are re-used and re-configured. Such practice aims to operate between the “one-off” world of the all-custom and the entirely reproducible world of “copy-paste.”

title Non-Deterministic Exploration through Parametric Design

summary This paper explores non-deterministic parametric modelling as a design tool. Specifically, it addresses the application of parametric variables to the generation of a conceptual bridge design and the use of repeatable discrete components to the conceptual form. In order to control the generation of the bridge form, a set of design variables based on the concept of a law curve have been developed. These design variables are applied and tested through interactive modelling and variation, driven by manipulating the law curve. Combining this process with the application and control of a repeatable element, known as a Representative Volumetric Element (RVE), allows for the development and exploration of a design solution that could not be achieved through the use of conventional computer modelling. The competition brief for the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) ‘Dialectical Bridge’ has been used as a case study to demonstrate the use of non-deterministic parametric modelling as a design tool. The results of the experimentation with parametric variables, the law curve and representative volumetric elements (RVE) are presented in the paper.

summary The purpose of this research is to develop a process capable of optimizing the capture of light in a circumscribed space, using a responsive system of skylights. Research is focused on the design of irregular dome-like pavilion spaces circumscribed by curved surfaces, but the envisioned process might be applied to other functional, formal, and spatial typologies. The design of the pavilion starts with the generation of a surface, later tessellated into a matrix of skylights depending on the geographic location and sun orientation. In the constructed pavilion, the skylights react to the variation of daylight intensity during the day to satisfy specified internal lighting needs. Simultaneously, the integration of conception and fabrication using digital tools (CAD-CAM) facilitates the construction of a non-standard, parametric geometry, thereby diminishing the costs of production and allowing for personalization, while assuring global sustainability.

summary From the recent advent of scripting tools integrated into commercial CAAD software and everyday design practice, the use of programming applied to an architectural design process becomes a necessary field of study. The presented research explores the use of programming as explorative and reflexive medium (Schön, 1983) through the development of a programming framework for architectural design. Based on Java, the ANAR+ library is a parametric geometry environment meant to be used as programming interface by designers. Form exploration strategies based on parametric variations depend on the internal logic description, a key role for form generation. In most commercial CAD software, geometric data structures are often predefined objects, thus constraining the form exploration, whereas digital architectural research and teaching are in need for an encompassing tool able to step beyond new software products limitations.

summary This research investigates how algorithm design and scripting as pedagogy can affect generalized design ability and understanding. Logical, systematic thinking is considered foundational in developing architectural design aptitude and is explicit when designing algorithms. The course work presented mandates the construction of process rather than product. Scripting is implemented not as a means to an end but rather a medium for exploration. More valuable than formal generator or problem-solver, these scripted designs test direct aesthetic implications. Further tested is the role of animation in de-linearizing the design process. By isolating the algorithm as topic, technique, and concept, scripting skills and the produced artifact are extendable and are translatable to other media. Algorithm design is presented as a 2-dimensional but temporal endeavor: students script an animate, interactive vector-based image. This facilitates the transition from algorithm to spatial experience while also readying students for form-based explorations. The 2-d temporal exercise is of a similar order of complexity to a 3-dimensional static condition. Pieces of the animation structure are provided as a canvas, specifically the ability of the viewer to manually control a single parametric variable that affects the visual output through a user-interface element. The following and final project of the course expands upon the technique of scripting image in the design of an experience by collaging video, images and animation.

summary The design and fabrication of an exhibition display project was taken as an opportunity to explore parametric design with a group of students in Chile. This article presents the experience of a design studio workshop exercise by addressing the introduction of parametric design principles and the development of a built academic project through a team based design and fabrication process. The strategy followed by the team was to utilize parametric models as a mean to materialize driving variables of the project into unexpected geometries to be deployed in different public spaces in Santiago. Context, time scale and available technology resulted in a non-obvious combination of advanced digital design and fabrication techniques and low-cost mass-produced materials.

summary We present a research program in which a plug-in tool for the generation of vertically stacked single family homes is developed and implemented in the software Autodesk Revit Architecture. The parametrized typology will provide for more variety, individuality and appropriateness in the homes themselves and also in the urban structures created by them. CAAM methods furthermore drastically reduce the production costs. The research is government-funded and sponsored by the building and software industry with the aim to both extend the functionality of an existing software package and to build a prototype urban development.

summary Methods for parametric design and virtual modeling have reached a remarkable degree of development, but their separation from real construction is increasing. Fuller's Dymaxion Bathroom failed, around 1930, due to union opposition. The restaurant Georges (Paris, 2000) designed by MacFarlante and Jakob had to be built, like other recent projects, by a boat manufacturing company. We are at an unprecedented crossroads. It is proposed that part of the current research design would be redirected, although it seems unfeasible, to the reorganization of the construction industry.

summary The final configuration of the architectural shape is deeply conditioned by all constraints that the environmental context imposes. These, duly codified, can therefore generative elements that can be managed by the designer. Following a parametric approach, the architectural envelope is directly related to the constraints emerging from the urban context. In this paper we present the development and implementation of an application, which allows to generating three-dimensional models of buildings, directly within a three-dimensional geo-referenced environment. The application offers the user many innovative suggestions, associating the modeling ability, typical of the CAD systems, to the opportunity offered by the geo-referenced systems, to evaluate in real time the impact of the buildings directly on its environment, within which it can be generated and manipulated. The designer is able to explore several alternative solutions, according to formal requirements and style preferences. Three experiments are presented for different urban scenarios.

summary Capitalism does play a decisive role in the planning and generation of countless generic typologies in the urban landscape to a certain extent. This also includes the planning and generation of housing models. As a result of conventional planning that is based on ‘entrepreneurship subdivision’, only similar housing model for a specific income group is sometimes offered. In the long term, this kind of development occupies massive land, which is not suitable for sustainable growth and creates social segregation. This paper suggests an alternative approach of ‘associative design’. Parametric design software is utilized to generate the housing diversity. It aims to construct a population of housing units that together form a new neigh­borhood model based on the land specificity that emphasizes its economic and ecological factors.

title Parametric Constructionist Kits: Physical Design and Delivery System for Rapid Prototyping Devices

summary In this paper we illustrate a design methodology based on constructionist learning principles with CAD modeling and rapid prototyping. The belief is that a constructionist approach to design development extends design possibilities beyond the visual aspects of rendering and animation to building construction by way of component-based parametric modeling. This is demonstrated by way of construction kits as a proposed system of physical design production, individually and in groups. Results of the system are data sets for model manufacturing, hand assembly and design feedback. The impact of this work is to teach physical modeling as a system of production that will allow a designer hands-on learning of building structure, material mechanics and building component behavior. Also design success is newly defined as a relationship between the visual and physical evaluation; not just the visual. The paper ends with examples of complex design models generated from elements in the construction kit and a physical design grammar used to guide element assembly. Although the examples in this paper satisfy model making for building structures we believe this system can be useful for anyone who needs to construct physical artifacts beyond traditional scales found in rapid prototyping.
