summary A potential way to bridge the gap between complex form generation and models for physical manifestations is to panelize NURBS surfaces with polygonal faces. This paper investigates the transition from NURBS surface to a mesh solid through a procedural modeling approach, in the process, illustrating how a discretized planar surface can be reconstructed for form generation and further exploration. The paper promotes this approach as an efficient way to modeling complex forms using an example drawn from real life architecture to demonstrate a generative process with customized restructuring.

title Musical Deconstruction / Reconstruction: Visualizing architectonic spaces through music

summary There is a common belief that music and architecture are connected through a hidden a dimension. Both arts, when abstracted intellectually (through mathematics) or emotionally (through phenomenological experience), share a number of ordering principles, having the same notion of crescendo in sequence and progression. Many have sought to unlock this hidden dimension to create artwork that lets our souls transcend up to the heavens. There are five different methods where architects have used music in their design approach: there are those who use harmonic proportions found in musical consonances as room dimensions to create harmonic spaces, flowing into each other like musical chords (Palladio, Steven Holl); those who believe that music is ‘design in time’ use rhythmic elements of music and apply it to their vertical surfaces and structural grids (Iannis Xenakis, Le Corbusier); those who use architecture as a musical instrument experiment with sound and acoustics to create a phenomenological environment (Bernhard Leitner, Peter Zumthor); those gifted with synethsesia (stimulating one sensory preceptor with another, e.g. seeing colors by listening to music, or vice versa) use certain musical pieces as an inspiration for form generation (Wassily Kandinsky, Steven Holl); and there are those who deconstruct an element in music and reconstruct it to architectural form, highlighting common themes between both arts (Iannis Xenakis, Daniel Libeskind). These five different methods have been the topic of research of many architectural scholars using western music as reference. The question becomes what if the musical reference is changed? Classical, rock, pop, country, jazz, and blues music are very different from one another, yet they share similar foundational musical structures. One may go further and experiment with various world music as reference, which is very different than western music in terms of musical structure. Linguists and musicologists have discussed the origins of music in relation to language. They hypothesize that cognitive elements found in language are somehow carried into the region's music. This paper documents the research of the author in this topic, discussing the digital modeling applications adopted that make such an investigation possible. The interest here is exploring how the visual space is altered when the musical reference is changed, and whether properties of the musical reference are evident in the architectural visualization. The musical references will be limited to Western Classical and Arabic music.

summary Situated on a southern hillside overlooking the World Heritage City of Bath in Somerset is the splendid 18th century landscape garden, Prior Park. The garden, now a National Trust property, has lost many of its original features and no longer affords the visitor the rich experience it once did. This project demonstrates how digital techniques can reconstruct a complex 12-hectare landscape and simulate the visitors’ pleasure of 250 years ago.

summary We describe the exploration of the manifold novel shapes found in algebraic geometry and their application in architectural design. These surfaces represent the zero-sets of certain polynomials of varying degrees. They are therefore very structured, coherent and harmonious yet at the same time geometrically and topologically highly complex. Their application in design is mostly unprecedended as they have only recently begun to become accessible through novel software tools. We present and discuss experimental student design and research projects where shapes found in algebraic geometry were developed into pavilion designs. We describe historic precedents for the inspiration of art and architecture through mathematics and show how algebraic surfaces can be used to expand architects’ sculptural vocabulary, make the utmost of three-dimensional sculptural qualities, employ shapes that have a strong internal structure, transcend the imaginable and explore polynomials as a new kind of shape-making tool.

title Evaluating the use of 3D virtual worlds in collaborative design learning

summary 3D virtual worlds for collaborative design learning have been widely recognized and practised, nevertheless there is a general lack of formal evaluation with empirical evidence for the performance of virtual worlds, and their roles in developing students’ teamwork skills. In bridging these gaps, this paper provides a critical discussion of the effectiveness of virtual worlds for collaborative design learning, supported by a comprehensive analysis on the results of an inclusive questionnaire completed by architectural students. The paper provides insight into the application of virtual worlds in both technical and procedural experiences, and discusses the benefits and shortcomings of virtual worlds on design education.

summary This study aims to present a classification of methodological procedures for using computer programmes to simulate architectural historical heritage. Produced for a Master’s Degree dissertation in Architecture, the methodology was developed based on several analyses of applications, possibilities and restrictions, with the assistance of photogrammetric reconstruction and several computer-graphics programmes. The files generated enable production of animations recording the changes experienced by buildings at various historical periods. These procedures were applied to the simulation of several buildings around the Praça Dante Alighieri in the centre of Caxias do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, demonstrating their appropriateness and effectiveness and also showing the potential of computer-simulation resources for the historical environment, both educationally and in appreciation of architectural heritage.

summary With the increased usage of 3D modeling, visualization, simulation and Building Information Modeling, architects produce 3D models, both for new designs and for historic reconstructions. However, these models are seldom shared to transfer structured information about the project. Even if they are exchanged, they are often not usable outside of their original design application. Additionally, digital archives with architectural content can not easily provide structured information about these 3D models, limiting their usefulness. This article discusses an approach to provide better structured models, using a combination of a sound methodology, the application of open file formats and additional metadata creation.

summary This paper deals with 3D modeling of complex architectural elements for virtual 3D scene reconstruction based on images or point clouds. It presents a new method at the opposite of classical photogrammetry and lasergrammetry techniques: parametric components are created and then adapted to the measured data. We have conceived and developed a parametric shape generator tool for virtual 3D reconstruction of cultural heritage monuments. We present the geometrical study on the cupola shapes with all their diversity. It is illustrated with the Suleymaniyé Mosque in Turkey. The results are promising. The modeling time is greatly reduced.

summary The aim of the following paper is to show a method of digital reconstruction and analysis of an important artifact pertaining to the Abruzzo cultural heritage, the ‘trabocco’. In fact recent software for graphics and architecture, such as CAD, graphics editor, and those dedicated to three-dimensional modeling and rendering are tools that open new opportunities in the study of cultural heritage artifacts, The more the complexity of the object to study, the more the advantages for their use. A formal and structural complexity characterize the trabocchi, pile constructions typical of the Abruzzo coast, that go back to the middle of XVII century and the subject of this study is the trabocco of Punta Turchinio, the most famous and complex of the coast. Among the digital reconstruction’s objectives there are: Increase the knowledge of the ‘trabocco’ and generate a series of information necessary to define and manage a recovery plan; to study more deeply the technologic decomposition of the four main sub-systems with related abacus of the technological elements and create static and animated graphics restitutions such as renderings and animations to understand some spatial and formal characteristics.

title Preserving memories with digital media: a methodology for the reconstruction of Castelnuovo Village

summary The historical centre of the village of Castelnuovo (located in Abruzzo, a region in central of Italy) was seriously damaged by the earthquake of the 6th of April 2009. Following the survey by the Civil Protection, all dwellings have been classified as unsuitable for habitation. The village should be either abandoned or totally rebuilt. But which is its value? Is there something worth of being preserved? If observed from a biodiversity point of view, or more precisely from a “cultural biodiversity” point of view, the historical centre possess interesting materials and immaterial characteristics. These qualities constitute real guidelines for a possible recovery project. Since there is not any possibility to make a survey of the inner village because of its destruction by the earthquake, in this research we have decided to use information technology, in order to rebuilt it and study it in a three-dimensional environment. In this paper we describe the theoretical basis, the method of elaboration and the instruments we have used to locate and evaluate the memories that should be preserved in a new project. Starting with a traditional documentation, such as photographs and drawings, we have used a variety of software (graphics editing program, CAD, 3D modeler, videogame 3D-engine), because of the several hypothesis considered.

title 3D Collaborative Environments in Archaeology: Experiencing the Reconstruction of the Past

summary This paper presents the outcome of the research project: "Integrated Technologies of Robotics and Virtual Environments in Archaeology", financed by the Italian Ministry of the University and Scientific Research, FIRB (Funds for the Investments of Basic Research). The aim of the project is to experiment and realize a multi-user domain on the web aimed to a multidisciplinary scientific community: archaeologists, historians, experts in human and social sciences, communication experts. The capacity to load, share and interact with data in the same spatial virtual environment can increase the level of learning and scientific communication. The project is the result of the collaboration between CNR-ITABC of Rome, the University of California, Merced, the Department of Archaeology of the University of Pisa and Scuola S. Anna of Pisa. It focuses on three archaeological sites: the Teban tomb 14 in the necropolis of Gurna, Fayum Medinet Madi, both in Egypt, and Khor Rori, in Oman. The collaborative environment is constructed through a virtual reality system. This allows to create a virtual space where it is possible to share 3D information on the project and to host additional behaviors of the scientific community.

summary In this paper, we suggest a generic city description model suited for purposes like semi-automatic city modeling and urban layout evaluation. The generic city model refers to basic vital functions of a (computable) city. Feature patterns are used to extend the generic city model with global and local characteristics. The Hellenistic cities serve as a platform for a first implementation to test a semi-automatic city model generation. As a result four cities are reconstructed as a first example of our ongoing work, Miletus, Knidos, Priene and Olynthus. Future work will deal with the application of the generic city model to the performance simulation of contemporary urban layouts.

summary In the course of a study into the origins of the Ionic order, a group of fragmentary early capitals of historic importance were measured by short-range laser-scanning, and then reconstructed in their original state by means of NURBS surface modelling. Drawings, renderings and scaled facsimiles were produced from both types of model, and proved invaluable in the formal analysis of the objects by architectural historians. It is suggested that these digital methods are more objective and accurate than traditional drawings and plaster reconstructions, and the resulting datasets more sustainable and of greater value to subsequent researchers.

title LibViz: Data Visualisation of the Old Library

summary The Old Library of Trinity College Dublin, built in 1732, is an internationally renowned research library. In recent decades it has also become a major tourist attraction in Dublin, with the display of the Book of Kells within the Old Library now drawing over half a million visitors per year. The Preservation and Conservation Department of the Library has raised concerns about the impact of the environment on the collection. The location of the building in the city centre, large visitor numbers, and the conditions within the building are putting the collection at risk. In developing a strategic plan to find solutions to these problems, the department has been assessing and documenting the current situation. This paper introduces ongoing work on a system to visualise the collected data, which includes: dust levels and dispersion, internal and external temperature and relative humidity levels, and visitor numbers in the Old Library. We are developing a user interface for which the data, originally stored in various file formats, is consolidated in a database which can be explored using a 3D virtual reconstruction of the Old Library. With this novel technique, it is also possible to compare and assess the relationships between the various datasets in context.

summary Virtual Ampang Jaya is an interactive visualization environment for modeling urban growth and spatio-temporal transformation to expose and evaluate the different layers of Ampang Jaya, consisting of social, economic, built and natural environments. The research will investigate the techniques of data acquisition, data reconstruction from physical to digital, urban analysis and visualization in constructing a digital model which may include low geometric content such as 2D digital maps and digital orthographics to high geometric content such as full volumetric parametric modeling. The process will integrate the state of the art GIS system to explore GIS powerful analytical and querying capabilities with interactive visualization environment as well as test the model as a predictive tool. The model will set as an experimental test pad in providing a new platform to support decision making about the spatial growth of Ampang Jaya by the various stakeholders in the planning processes. Such an environment will improve the subsequent digital models and research in the area of urban design and planning where visual communication is central.
