But can a bridge that connects the physical and virtual realms be developed? Can this, currently arbitrary form making be grounded in human activity and subsequently be integrated into real time, space and place? This paper describes the preliminary explorations of research which attempts to address these questions.

summary This paper argues that familiarity is the tool that enables the understanding of space abstraction and representation. Familiarity in this context is independent from embodied interaction, and is crudely based on the connection between the various similar images of space; in this particular case, virtual space. Our investigation into the nature of human interaction with space, its abstraction and its representation is based on the critical contrast between the outcomes of interaction with two virtual versions of a physical reality; the first version is a non-linear interactive graphical abstraction of the space where no assertions or indicators are given as to whether or not there is a relationship between the abstraction and its physical reality, whereas the second is a none-linear interactive 3D virtual environment clearly representing the physical space in question. The paper utilises qualitative methods of investigation in order to gain an insight into human embodied experience in space, its abstraction and representation.

summary Over the last decade, paradigm shifts in the philosophy of space-time relations, the change from space-time to spatio-temporality, caused significant changes in the design field, and introduced new variations and discourses for parametric approaches in architecture. Among all the discourses, parametricism is likely the most spectacular one. The founder of parametricism, Patrik Schumacher (2009) describes it as “a new style,” which has “the superior capacity to articulate programmatic complexity;” and “aesthetically, it is the elegance of ordered complexity in the sense of seamless fluidity.” In its theoretical background, Schumacher (2011) affiliates this style with the philosophy of autopoiesis, the philosophy that stands between making and becoming. Additionally, parametricism concerns not only the physical geometry in making of form; but also discusses the relational and causal aspects in becoming of form. In other words, it brings the aesthetic qualities in making through the topological intelligence behind becoming. Regarding that, parametricism seems an effective way of managing /creating complex topologies in form-related issues. However, when it comes to practice, there are some challenging points of parametricism in large-scale design studies. Thus, this work underlines that the dominance of elegance for urban planning has the potential of limiting the flexible and dynamic topology of the urban context, and objectifying the whole complex urban form as an over-designed product. For an aesthetic inquiry into urban parametricism, this paper highlights the challenging issues behind the aesthetic premises of parametricism at the urban design scale. For that, Kartal Master Plan Design Proposal by Zaha Hadid Architects (2006) will be discussed as an exemplary work.

summary This paper describes an interactive experiment in which “middleware” is interpreted as the architecture of non-building, and the making of media as mediator between physical and visual; temporal and fixed; digital and analog. Leon Battista Alberti, Jorge Silvetti, and other architectural critics have posited that architects do not make buildings but, rather, representations of buildings. The simple translation of this is that architects make drawings, models, computer simulations, and the like for the ultimate purpose of making a building. This work challenges the notion that architects make only representation media, and expands the role of architecture to include mediation as an act upon a space that is both physical and analytical. What if architects make, but they don’t make for the end result of a building? What if architects make representations that are physical and experiential, and that are designed and built without the presumption of a building? This is the space that middleware occupies.

summary This paper presents the results of a comparative study between traditional analogue tools (sketches and physical models), a CAD software (digital) and a hybrid tool (digital and analogue) that allows immersive freehand sketching and model making (the Hybrid Ideation Space), in order to assess their respective abilities to support collaborative ideation. By comparing these tools, we were able to better understand the relationship between the activity of collaborative ideation, the tools that support it and the experience of the designer in order to provide principles for the development of collaborative tools in design.

title Design Visualization:A Media Effects Approach

summary This paper proposes an integrative approach in the evaluative phase of the design process, incorporating concepts, methodologies and measurement strategies that are well established in media psychology. The paper suggests a variable-centered approach for conceptualizing visualization technologies and to evaluate their potential to simulate architectural experience. Psychophysiological measures are introduced to capture the affective component of the architectural experience facilitated by visualization tools such as virtual reality. These are important in order to empirically evaluate the experiential aspects of an architectural space through visualization. Ideas are illustrated with examples drawn from prior and ongoing research collaboration between an architectural visualization lab and a media effects research lab.

summary We introduce an evolutionary design approach for the automatic arrangement of a predefined space program on a given site. The design goal is to distribute floor spaces while ensuring the essential building performance and usage. The presented evolutionary strategy is applied to acquire optimal design solutions considering both environmental conditions and inner organization under diversified fitness functions. The evaluation process consists of the direct analysis of the spatial network and the physical factors in an adequate accuracy. The method provides a fast generation of qualified volumetric studies. The resulting buildings become a manifested compromise between qualities and cost.

title 3D Collaborative Environments in Archaeology: Experiencing the Reconstruction of the Past

summary This paper presents the outcome of the research project: "Integrated Technologies of Robotics and Virtual Environments in Archaeology", financed by the Italian Ministry of the University and Scientific Research, FIRB (Funds for the Investments of Basic Research). The aim of the project is to experiment and realize a multi-user domain on the web aimed to a multidisciplinary scientific community: archaeologists, historians, experts in human and social sciences, communication experts. The capacity to load, share and interact with data in the same spatial virtual environment can increase the level of learning and scientific communication. The project is the result of the collaboration between CNR-ITABC of Rome, the University of California, Merced, the Department of Archaeology of the University of Pisa and Scuola S. Anna of Pisa. It focuses on three archaeological sites: the Teban tomb 14 in the necropolis of Gurna, Fayum Medinet Madi, both in Egypt, and Khor Rori, in Oman. The collaborative environment is constructed through a virtual reality system. This allows to create a virtual space where it is possible to share 3D information on the project and to host additional behaviors of the scientific community.

summary This research examines the value of “redesigning the brick,” in creating a new vocabulary of basic architectural building blocks with autonomous reconfigurable robotics. The paper highlights several built examples by the author of robotic architectural environments and the work of architecture students whereby individual modules were created within the context of a design studio and applied to scenarios of space making at various scales. Several strategies for decentralized control were explored dictating how individual parts of a system should behave and how local interactions between individual modules can lead to the emergence of global behaviour. The students schematically designed selfreplicating models which would allow for each object to be able to attach, detach, and reconfigure according to predetermined computational logic. The projects successfully demonstrate various strategies for mechanical design, locomotion and control.

summary InteractiveChair is proposed as a natural and affordable medium that enables direct control of locomotion in 3D virtual space by using dynamic sitting postures. InteractiveChair detects subtle movements of a chair occupant in real time by measuring relative position and orientation between the user’s body and the chair. While standard user interfaces require users to consciously relate the device manipulation by hand to the action in the virtual space, InteractiveChair directly leverages the correlation between our body and spatial conception to control the avatar’s locomotion. This study determines typical user behaviours on the chair and measures them through sensors that are exquisitely integrated with a typical swivel chair. The study then presents results from a user study to measure the qualitative factors of user experience in controlling virtual locomotion with InteractiveChair.

summary Simple Euclidean distance has thus far been the dominating concept in analyzing architectural and urban spaces. This paper demonstrates that distances between spaces cannot be measured solely in terms of simple Euclidean Distance, but instead other kind of distances (e.g. City block, Chebyshev, Minkowski, Canberra distance or Angular separation) are shown to offer new meaningful insight into space and its denotation. Several issues are raised in light of these new measures such as how much are these measurement techniques influenced by what counts as "space"? In addition is there a difference between the physical distance and the human perception of distance? More importantly, how do these methods alter design or offer a new process of designing? Applications and analysis is applied to classical examples of architecture.

The structure emulates ten body movements, derived from the principles of physical Zen training as its transforming mechanism. summary The latter half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century have seen significant change in the definition of the terms ‘architecture’ and ‘architect’. Three fundamental factors affecting these changes have been the continual remoulding of global societal structures, the increasing importance of the reciprocal relationship between media and architecture and the growth of digital technologies in all areas of modern living. Through the rapid proliferation of new technologies, the extension of architecture into virtual spaces and the utilization of media as a tool for shaping experience, the lines between architecture and media have become blurred and new definitions of architectural and medial space have been defined. The use of the word medial in this paper means the relation of architecture to traditional and digital media. This paper describes how the Bauhaus University Weimar has responded to these developments. The paper gives an overview of the interdisciplinary 'MediaArchitecture' post-graduate master's programme as a collaboration between the Bauhaus' Faculty of Architecture and Faculty of Media and describes selected coursework and research projects.

summary Cities today are intricate hybrids of physical and informational space. Brought into being through complex yet common everyday techno-social practices, these hybrids rely on the wireless spectrum to enable a variety of media, information, and communications events that continually make and remake the spatial conditions of urban life. This paper examines the relations between this Hertzian space and the architecture of urban environments. Building on a longstanding discourse surrounding the material and immaterial limits of urban architecture, it asks how we might begin to think about shaping the Hertzian space of contemporary cities through the practices and promises of urban computing and locative media. Coaxing architecture beyond its professional and disciplinary boundaries and, at the same time, recasting contemporary media art within broader social, cultural, and political contexts of urban space, the essay attempts to outline a conversation between these fields of practice that share a common theater of operations: that of the contemporary city.

summary Urban environment is a “sensible” space; it can manifest itself to our senses through the process of perception. The comprehension of the relation between man and his environment requires a study of spatial perception and its modes of interpretation. This paper proposes to study the perception by using the Virtual Reality (VR) technologies as a tool of qualitative analysis. The study presents an exploratory analysis of visual perception in a real urban path and its virtual modeling. It shows the potentials of virtual environments in the qualitative assessment of urban spaces.

summary Architecture uses technology to achieve certain functional, cultural, social, economic, and other goals. In turn, technology transforms the discipline. Information technologies promise to change design processes, practices, and products. The first uses of computing in the service of architecture have been rather timid, mimicking older practices. This is changing rapidly: new design and evaluation tools allow architects to imagine new building forms, more responsive (and environmentally more responsible) buildings, even radically new types of environments that blend physical with virtual space. Understanding and shaping this transformation are the basis of architectural design research and education in the 21st century.

title Assessment of a Physical Planning Project through Virtual Reality: A case study

summary The study reports an application of VR models in the assessment of a part of physical planning project. The project outputs were different reports, GIS data and maps, and CAD drawings. The GIS data were used to create the VR models by importing Shpfiles of the GIS project outputs to VR software. The study presents VR models and the assessment of the physical planning project in terms of: 1) effect of the population increase, 2) effect of the required residential units, and 3) quality assurance for the current situation and future situation. The method used to build up the VR Models was through satellite images (by Google Earth Pro) and VR software (by UC Win/Road). Different models were built up to visualize and assess the alternative solutions and various influential factors. The study employed Virtual Reality in various urban and planning problems through models that are employed as tools of communication and design. The visualized environment and the associated models facilitated the evaluation of important areas, namely: impact of different factors and alternative solutions. The study concludes that the processes, such as decision making, visualization and representation, performed through VR manifest its importance to different design phases of urban and physical planning.
