summary This work investigates how diagrams of architectural space might self-organize relative to specific associational parameters to generate diagrams of spatial organization. The premise is that buildings are systems of spatial relations defined by the dynamic interactions of various autonomous spatially discrete entities. Looking to swarm intelligence, the focus here is on the problem of circulation and explicit spatial arrangement. The paper reports an investigation of emergent route formation and spatial connectivity based on simple agent and pheromone interaction. An array of ant colonies defines the system. A colony’s nest represents a specific space. Space-agents transmit information throughout the space-colony population, defining an emergent communication network.

summary This paper presents an application of swarm intelligence towards the problem of spatial configuration. The methodology classifies activities as discrete entities, which self-organise topologically through associational parameters: an investigation of emergent route formation and spatial connectivity based on simple agent and pheromone interaction, coupled with the problem of ‘loose’ rectangular geometric assembly. A concept model sniffingSpace (Ireland, 2009) developed in Netlogo (Willensky, 1999), which established the self-organising topological capacity of the system, is extended in Processing (Fry & Rea, 2009) to incorporate rectangular geometry towards the problem of planning architectural space.

summary The use of specific computer softwares for architecture design have been analyzed and allowed researchers in this matter to consider a change in architectural creation method realizing new possibilities in the way they project. Based on our experience as architectural project teacher we can observe that more and more students project and present projects with their drawings produced by computer. This tools changing envolves other changings in the project manners as we can notice in some architects that dawn in contemporary scene. This study wants to understand this changings in the projecting practice of Architecture and Urbanism students, and architects.

summary Schools and teachers increasingly apply Online Learning Environments for teaching and course management. In many cases, an existing platform is used to support the curriculum. At the K.U. Leuven in Belgium a campus-wide platform is provided, using a commercial Content Management System. At the same time, the Design and Building Methodology research group at the Department of Architecture, Urbanism and Planning developed a custom portal to organize Computer Aided Architectural Design courses and seminars. Integration of this portal into the university system was rather disappointing, since much of the flexibility and customizability was lost, without any chance of filling in the gaps. This article discusses the possibilities and limitations of existing web-based systems to support Computer Aided Architectural Design teaching and reports on our own experiences from the last decade. A comparison of selected systems is juxtaposed with the requirements derived from these experiences.

summary This paper aims to develop a reflection about the methodology of design project education mediated by new medias, analyzing the intervention of a digital environment in the design projectual students. From a critical evaluation of the desires of faculty and students of the Course of Architecture and Urbanism, Federal University of Ceará, examines the possibilities of establishing new methodologies and technologies into teaching practices of the studio project. Through the reflections encouraged, this paper seeks to underscore the importance of awareness against the anachronism of the technological education of Architecture and Urbanism in most of the schools in Brazil.

summary The evolution of the graphical representation of the architecture with the development of procedures for computer-aided designs is causing a shift in the way of thinking about architecture. Traditionally, the teaching of descriptive geometry that allows architects in training cognition full three-dimensional space. Changing this tradition, today we have the construction of the projective drawing by computer, CAD or BIM. We aim to question the way to teach courses in the projective geometry of architecture and urbanism in the face of profound changes in knowledge and representation of the form established by computer graphics technology with CAD and BIM.
