title Outdoor mobile augmented reality for past and future on-site architectural visualizations

summary Mobile devices have become widely used in outdoors on-the-move applications. Our research aims at developing a system which allows users to visualize the virtual buildings, streets, historic sites, landscapes or cityscapes (in the past or future) which are rendered seamlessly with the current actual scene captured by the camera (called Augmented Reality), and interactively exploring the virtual scene in real-time while the user is moving. We use the camera PDA, the GPS receiver and the gyroscope to track the mobile device’s position and orientation for virtual scene rendering. This article documents the issues regarding accurate alignment, tracking, errors and limitations with mobile devices and presents our solutions generated so far for the research in progress.

summary Fire agencies on all levels try hard to save lives, properties, and natural resources. Accurate access to critical information is essential in this regard, many agencies around the world have embraced GIS as a tool that helps them balance needs, uses, and hazards to promote sustainability of the environment while identifying and limiting vulnerability. At Kingdom of Bahrain, Ministry of interior established the Geographic Security System (GSS) to enhance the emergency response. The 3D of the GSS Consisted of 3 main parts: (1) 3D for terrain model, (2) 3D model for entire targeted zones, and (3) 3D models for individual buildings. In this paper, the integration between GSS system and 3D model will be illustrated, and how this kind of integration could enhance decision support system (DSS) for fire safety at kingdom of Bahrain. On other hand, we will highlight the technical and legislation difficulties faced in this project. Also, the future steps to enhance DSS will be discussed.

The GIS is used by the international agencies heritage like UNESCO. The GIS applications that are largely applied in built cultural heritage are internationally known as Heritage Information System – HIS. In HIS, the space configuration of the historical sites is represented by a map or for a DTM, with the quantitative and qualitative attributes, 3D geometric models and hypermedia products. Their visualization are enriched by techniques of virtual reality and published in the web.

summary This paper deals with 3D modeling of complex architectural elements for virtual 3D scene reconstruction based on images or point clouds. It presents a new method at the opposite of classical photogrammetry and lasergrammetry techniques: parametric components are created and then adapted to the measured data. We have conceived and developed a parametric shape generator tool for virtual 3D reconstruction of cultural heritage monuments. We present the geometrical study on the cupola shapes with all their diversity. It is illustrated with the Suleymaniyé Mosque in Turkey. The results are promising. The modeling time is greatly reduced.

summary Application of 3D models in urban planning practice is still limited to visualization of existing or newly designed situations. Municipalities are looking for possibilities to communicate the transition process of the urban development area with the citizens. A prototype system was developed to investigate what the technical requirements are of such a tool and what the organizational consequences will be. As an example, screenshots are shown of a district in Eindhoven at different moments in time. Finally, recommendations are given on what is needed to turn the prototype into a professional tool.

summary This paper explores the applicability of algorithmic design in a real-world architectural context; through the creation of a generative system for modular housing arrangements (MHAS). It is a user interface in Autodesk Maya based on stochastic search to produce various alternatives for the modular housing arrangements. Through the UI, the designer can enter parameters and rules, and then the MHAS will produce 3D alternatives according to the specified frame conditions and renders a selected view. This generative system is expected to facilitate the design process, generate unexpected solutions for well specified rules, and save time consumption in the early design process.

title 3D Collaborative Environments in Archaeology: Experiencing the Reconstruction of the Past

summary This paper presents the outcome of the research project: "Integrated Technologies of Robotics and Virtual Environments in Archaeology", financed by the Italian Ministry of the University and Scientific Research, FIRB (Funds for the Investments of Basic Research). The aim of the project is to experiment and realize a multi-user domain on the web aimed to a multidisciplinary scientific community: archaeologists, historians, experts in human and social sciences, communication experts. The capacity to load, share and interact with data in the same spatial virtual environment can increase the level of learning and scientific communication. The project is the result of the collaboration between CNR-ITABC of Rome, the University of California, Merced, the Department of Archaeology of the University of Pisa and Scuola S. Anna of Pisa. It focuses on three archaeological sites: the Teban tomb 14 in the necropolis of Gurna, Fayum Medinet Madi, both in Egypt, and Khor Rori, in Oman. The collaborative environment is constructed through a virtual reality system. This allows to create a virtual space where it is possible to share 3D information on the project and to host additional behaviors of the scientific community.

summary Widespread use by 3D designers of simple digital modeling applications such as Google’s SketchUp may displace the use of physical models in design. However, the difficulties often faced by non-experts in the ad hoc navigation of digital models during design reviews have not been eliminated. Keyboards and mice are clumsy navigational devices and difficult to share in a collaborative setting. This work explores the combination of new, inexpensive interface hardware technologies with a popular 3D modeler in order to create a viable surrogate for physical models. Two architectural model navigation and presentation interfaces were developed, one based on an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) circuit board (“Gizmo”), and one that used a Wii Remote Controller (“WiiView”). Both were interfaced with the popular architectural modeling program SketchUp. Anecdotal responses and preliminary user testing results are presented.

summary This article is a starting point for the development of experiential urban co-design interfaces to enhance public participation in local urban projects and to be also used as a communication and collaboration tool in urban design. It is based on the previous research involving 3D city models utilized as understandable design interfaces for the non-technical public (Jutraz, Zupancic, 2011), where we have already explored different views (pedestrian, intermediate and bird’s-eye view), as well as the means by which the information obtained from these different views may be combined by shifting between viewpoints. Previous work was conducted in the “street lab” as well as the Urban Experimental Lab, which was developed specifi cally for the public’s participation in urban planning (Voigt, Kieferle, Wössner, 2009). Presented in this article is the next step that explores the immersive collaboration environment 3D ICC [1], formerly known as Teleplace. The environment was developed for effi cient collaboration and remote communication and shifts the research focus towards questions regarding how to employ both labs as interfaces between the non-technical public and design professionals. As we are facing the lack of digital systems for public participation and education in urban design, different digital tools for communication and collaboration should be combined into a new holistic platform for design. A digital system of tools needs to be developed that supports the urban design decision-making process and focuses on improved final solutions and increased satisfaction amongst all participants. In this article the system of digital tools for public participation, which include communication, collaboration and education, will be also defi ned, with its basic characteristics and its elements.

summary This paper describes the design and implementation of TangiDESK, a tangible interface prototype to assist in the design and planning of urban design projects. The prototype derives from the need for an intuitive user interface similar to a designer’s or architect’s CAD system but also simple enough for non-designers like city planners and developers who are not accustomed to CAD interfaces to use and understand easily. Users can manipulate the objects or modify its relationship with other elements in the site while making preliminary design decisions together in a single environment. With TangiDESK, designers and planners can collaborate and make informative decisions more effectively and accurately in early stages of an urban design project.

summary Due to the rapid development of mobile and compact electronic devices such as PDAs and smart phones, designers and developers now have to consider user mobility and the dynamic context of use in the design of interactive systems. In this study, literatures associated with mobile navigation systems in museums and historic buildings are first reviewed in order to understand the features, advantages, and drawbacks of current mobile navigation technology. The feasibility of applying QR codes in the navigation of historic buildings is then discussed, and the mobile navigation principles mentioned in previous literatures are applied in our proposed system. A number of common problems are encountered in the navigation of local historic buildings or museums. Visitors (1) cannot understand what makes an exhibited item a work of art; (2) do not know where to start or how to get started; (3) feel rushed by guides during the guided tour; and (4) find that the audio guide is not clear enough. Managers of historic buildings or museums are generally concerned about (1) the high cost of constructing a mobile navigation environment; (2) possible damage to devices; and (3) the cost of device maintenance. This study attempts to solve the above issues by constructing an affordable digital navigation environment that enables users to clearly understand each exhibited item and its location.

summary Spacer fabrics are three dimensionally warp-knitted textiles that can be draped over complex double curved surfaces with no need for cut patterns or additional seams. This paper explains the development of an integral computational approach to the design and fabrication of sandwich composite structures with a spacer fabric core. Contrary to the common hierarchy of architectural design processes that prioritizes the definition of form over the inherent characteristics of materialization, this approach aims at an integral computational design process capable of unfolding a design from the constraints of making. The way the material capacity of spacer fabrics combined with the constraints of sandwich composite manufacturing directly informs the computational design process will be explained along the development of two prototype structures.

summary This paper presents a distributed simulation system for urban scenarios where infrastructure anomalies are common, such as those present in Latin-American cities. A microscopic-based model has been developed in order to represent the behavioural characteristics of the different mobility actors in a discrete lattice. The visualization component allows an interactive and immersive experience of the simulation results, providing a detailed point of view (focus) in the global environment (context). It is possible to empower the users’ interaction through devices for control and navigation of the data visualization.

title LibViz: Data Visualisation of the Old Library

summary The Old Library of Trinity College Dublin, built in 1732, is an internationally renowned research library. In recent decades it has also become a major tourist attraction in Dublin, with the display of the Book of Kells within the Old Library now drawing over half a million visitors per year. The Preservation and Conservation Department of the Library has raised concerns about the impact of the environment on the collection. The location of the building in the city centre, large visitor numbers, and the conditions within the building are putting the collection at risk. In developing a strategic plan to find solutions to these problems, the department has been assessing and documenting the current situation. This paper introduces ongoing work on a system to visualise the collected data, which includes: dust levels and dispersion, internal and external temperature and relative humidity levels, and visitor numbers in the Old Library. We are developing a user interface for which the data, originally stored in various file formats, is consolidated in a database which can be explored using a 3D virtual reconstruction of the Old Library. With this novel technique, it is also possible to compare and assess the relationships between the various datasets in context.

summary The purpose of this research is to build digital urban landscape, based on as-built environmental information. Scans were made to an expressway and surrounding buildings through the center of a city. A 3D long-range laser scanner was used to record buildings, plants, and open spaces in a static configuration, plus the records of pedestrians, vehicles, objects in a dynamic form. As the scan tolerance can be controlled in less than 4 mm/50 m, the final urban information management system creates a precise description of objects with colors and textures feasible for internet browsing as well as for infrastructure dimensioning and construction monitoring.

summary Residential property value is affected by several factors during its useful time. . These factors include people’s lifestyles, traditions and culture, and the way they live and interact with the built environment. The property characteristics such as its location, building quality, adaptability, and energy efficiency would also have an impact on the property value. On the other hand, the nD CAD research that emerged in the late 1990s proposed endless dimensions of CAD modelling that would incorporate the building regulations’ requirements, basic user needs and client requirements. However, there is a need to implement lifelong parameters that would have significant effect on the property value in 3D models during the early stages of design. This can be done through a knowledge base integrated into a 3D model and links the lifelong property’s and the user’s characteristics with the property’s value. A survey was carried out on banks and Real Estate Development Fund (REDF) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to find out the level of impact of lifelong users and property characteristics on the property’s value. The results of the survey showed a number of lifelong property and user driven parameters that may have major impact on the property’s value. The implementation of lifelong parameters in nD CAD models would have a number of benefits. It would provide the decision makers such as banks and investors with a tool to assess the level of impact of possible lifelong factors on the property value and consider alternative schemes. Designers would use it during the early stages of design to produce optimum design solutions that provide an adequate product that is evaluated regarding its lifelong value to the end users. Eventually it would provide a comfortable environment that is tailored to the user’s needs and aspirations, while reserving the property’s lifelong value.

summary The development of better User Interface (UI) and Tangible User Interface (TUI) for 3D modeling has lasted for decades. With the popularity of free form style achieved by algorithmic methods, the existing solutions of UI/TUI for CAD are gradually insufficient. Neglecting the steep learning curve of algorithmic design requiring solid background of mathematics and programming, the common drawback is the lack of interactivity. All actions rely heavily on mental translations and experimental trial and error. In this research, we try to realize the idea of interactive algorithmic design by developing a tangible calligraphic brush, with this device designer can intuitively adopt algorithmic methodology to achieve highly creative results.

summary The knowledge of latest technology that allows the development of competitive products in reduced times is crucial to guarantee a sustainable growth of the national industry. This work presents the development of a computational system for the Virtual Design of products, the VirtusCADE, which is a CAD/CAE interactive software (Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Engineering). The VirtusCADE includes 3D geometric modeling of surfaces and solids and mesh generation. The system uses the parametric modeling of surfaces, including algorithms for determination of intersection between surfaces and for triangular mesh generation in trimmed parametric surfaces. The graphical interface is interactive and allows the direct real time manipulation of objects (lines, surfaces and solids) in 3D using the OpenGL technology. The system prioritizes the usability, implementing several graphic tools that facilitate the manipulation in 3D. The VirtusCADE contemplates the structural simulation through the Finite Element Method. The code architecture is based on oriented object programming, which allows great scaling capability for the implementation of new tools. This project has great applicability in numerical simulation of physical phenomena, such structural analysis of buildings, vehicles parts, with impact in the industries of civil construction, metal-mechanics, aerospatial, naval and automotive.
