summary AUTOMATED COST ANALYSIS OF CONCEPT DESIGN BIM MODELS Interoperability: BIM models and cost models This paper introduces the automated cost analysis developed for the General Services Administration (GSA) and the analysis results of a case study involving a concept design courthouse BIM model. The purpose of this study is to investigate interoperability issues related to integrating design and analysis tools; specifically BIM models and cost models. Previous efforts to generate cost estimates from BIM models have focused on developing two necessary but disjoint processes: 1) extracting accurate quantity take off data from BIM models, and 2) manipulating cost analysis results to provide informative feedback. Some recent efforts involve developing detailed definitions, enhanced IFC-based formats and in-house standards for assemblies that encompass building models (e.g. US Corps of Engineers). Some commercial applications enhance the level of detail associated to BIM objects with assembly descriptions to produce lightweight BIM models that can be used by different applications for various purposes (e.g. Autodesk for design review, Navisworks for scheduling, Innovaya for visual estimating, etc.). This study suggests the integration of design and analysis tools by means of managing all building data in one shared repository accessible to multiple domains in the AEC industry (Eastman, 1999; Eastman et al., 2008; authors, 2010). Our approach aims at providing an integrated platform that incorporates a quantity take off extraction method from IFC models, a cost analysis model, and a comprehensive cost reporting scheme, using the Solibri Model Checker (SMC) development environment. Approach As part of the effort to improve the performance of federal buildings, GSA evaluates concept design alternatives based on their compliance with specific requirements, including cost analysis. Two basic challenges emerge in the process of automating cost analysis for BIM models: 1) At this early concept design stage, only minimal information is available to produce a reliable analysis, such as space names and areas, and building gross area, 2) design alternatives share a lot of programmatic requirements such as location, functional spaces and other data. It is thus crucial to integrate other factors that contribute to substantial cost differences such as perimeter, and exterior wall and roof areas. These are extracted from BIM models using IFC data and input through XML into the Parametric Cost Engineering System (PACES, 2010) software to generate cost analysis reports. PACES uses this limited dataset at a conceptual stage and RSMeans (2010) data to infer cost assemblies at different levels of detail. Functionalities Cost model import module The cost model import module has three main functionalities: generating the input dataset necessary for the cost model, performing a semantic mapping between building type specific names and name aggregation structures in PACES known as functional space areas (FSAs), and managing cost data external to the BIM model, such as location and construction duration. The module computes building data such as footprint, gross area, perimeter, external wall and roof area and building space areas. This data is generated through SMC in the form of an XML file and imported into PACES. Reporting module The reporting module uses the cost report generated by PACES to develop a comprehensive report in the form of an excel spreadsheet. This report consists of a systems-elemental estimate that shows the main systems of the building in terms of UniFormat categories, escalation, markups, overhead and conditions, a UniFormat Level III report, and a cost breakdown that provides a summary of material, equipment, labor and total costs. Building parameters are integrated in the report to provide insight on the variations among design alternatives.

summary This paper develops a formal approach to investigate the evolution of a Korean traditional pattern, Bosangwhamun. The approach employs the structure of symbolic memes embedded in the pattern as a framework of hierarchical decomposition of a pattern to describe an evolutionary development process of a given pattern with a set of rules in shape grammar as style changes. Further, the formal descriptions of the given pattern become the basis for generating its variations. With this process, the validity of the rules and their appropriateness in the representation of Bosangwhamun are examined.

summary Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a method of solving and analysing problems that involved fluid flows. In the field of architecture, urban design and urban planning, CFD is useful for the analysis of ventilation and airflow in the built environment, especially in very dense cities. This paper will look into the possibility of making CFD more accessible to the general design and planning field. A simulation is done on a urban design proposal to quickly see how air flow behaves around it. From there, it looks into the future where technology will make CFD simulation more easily adopted and the possibilities of integrating the ventilation analysis with other environmental analysis results into the urban design arena.

summary Generative design is concerned with the definition and exploration of design spaces, and it has been suggested that emergence plays a key role in this process. In this paper, the impact of emergence on a design space is explored via consideration of different methods used to generate designs in a particular style. Three distinct methods of generating Islamic geometric patterns have been investigated and the extent to which emergence is employed in these methods has been explored. This research supports a discussion on the role of emergence in generative design, and an investigation into how design spaces are affected by the type of emergence employed in a generative process.

summary Various computer-aided sketch tools can be used to support architectural designing (Tang, Lee, Gero, 2010) either individually in early stage of the process or in communication. We focus on the second mentioned. The goal of this paper is to give an overview of possible applications and mention the platforms which are supported. We explore the advantages or disadvantages of the tools and compare it with our newly developed application called ColLab sketch. With this application we hope in increasing speed and ease of graphic communication on one hand and testing architects demands on the other hand. We develop multiple criteria for evaluating the tools, while believing this paper could be of use to give a hint how to improve remote as well as co-located collaborative designing by sketch. Architectural designing is a very sensitive topic when it comes to sketching. Finally, we would like to compare the newly developed tool to this list and suggest improvements or experiments that help its finalizing.

summary This research suggest the viewshed frequency concept to improve the limit of viewshed analysis and realized it through the programming. Viewshed frequency analysis presents arithmetic operation for several results of multilayered observation points, and designed for not only one building but also large scale of research sites. The results of research were as followed : (1) Viewshed frequency analysis makes possible multi viewpoints stereoscopic analysis and showed more improved results. (2) Viewshed frequency analysis has no limits of the scale of research sites by multi-layered grid observation points method. (3) Viewshed frequency analysis has more elaborate result with DEM which has building height and NDVI(Normalized Difference Vegetation Index).

summary Data is ubiquitous in our cities. However, designing a knowledge network about our cities is an arduous task, given that data sensed cannot be used directly, human significance must be added. Adding human significance can be achieved via an automated “expert system (ES)” in which domain expert knowledge are stored in a knowledge-based repository. The domain expert knowledge is matched with the corresponding data to derive specific inference which can aid decision making for urban stakeholders.This requires amalgamation of various interdisciplinary techniques. This paper presents a survey of existing technologies in order to investigate the emerging issues surrounding the design of a live knowledge network for sustainable urban living. The maps and models of the existing infrastructure of our cities that include a wealth of information such as topography, layout, zoning, land use, transportation networks, public facilities, and resource network grids need to be integrated with real-time spatiotemporal information about the city. Public data in forms of archives and data streams as well as online data from the social network and the Web can be analyzed using data mining techniques. The domain experts need to interpret the results of data mining into knowledge that will augment the existing knowledge base and models of our cities. In addition to the analysis of archived and streamed data sources from the built environment, the emerging state-of-the-art Web 2.0 and mobile technologies are presented as the potential techniques to crowddesign a live urban knowledge network. Data modeling, data mining, crowdsourcing, and social intervention techniques are reviewed in this paper with examples from the related work and our own experiments.

summary This study explores the relationship between density, built form typologies and their respective environmental quality in terms of Sky View Factor (SVF) distribution on both the facade and ground levels by examining representative residential precincts and urban street blocks. The findings demonstrate that the performances in terms of facade and ground level SVF distribution vary across cases under study. The differences in the variations of their SVF performances as a result of the increase of density suggest that alternative urban block typologies can be explored, when targeting at higher density development, that provide different spatial configurations and an equally good or better SVF performance than that of some of the existing urban block and precinct typologies.
