title Mathematically Driven Forms and Digital Tectonic: A formula for realizing the digital

summary Mathematics has been the interest of architects for hundreds of years and has been used in projects ranging from the Denmark Pavilion at Expo 2010 to Gaudi’s cathedral. Generative form finding frequently takes the inspiration of the geometric aesthetic found in mathematic forms. Today, the influence of digital computation technology is increasingly evident in architectural form seeking and analysis as they relate to mathematics. The sculptural possibilities of math forms have reconditioned the design process that establishes new modeling and tectonic approaches. This paper focuses on the study of current constraints and new procedures within mathematical approaches to architecture. Furthermore, this paper describes three experimental projects exploring mathematically driven designs and their potential within architectural vocabulary. In these experiments, the designers and students explored the manipulation of a planar surface through algorithmic equations and the molecular make-up of a surface through voxel representation.

title Do (not) sketch into my sketch - A comparison of existing tools
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2014.2.237
source Thompson, Emine Mine (ed.), Fusion - Proceedings of the 32nd eCAADe Conference - Volume 2, Department of Architecture and Built Environment, Faculty of Engineering and Environment, Newcastle upon Tyne, England, UK, 10-12 September 2014, pp. 237-243
summary Various computer-aided sketch tools can be used to support architectural designing (Tang, Lee, Gero, 2010) either individually in early stage of the process or in communication. We focus on the second mentioned. The goal of this paper is to give an overview of possible applications and mention the platforms which are supported. We explore the advantages or disadvantages of the tools and compare it with our newly developed application called ColLab sketch. With this application we hope in increasing speed and ease of graphic communication on one hand and testing architects demands on the other hand. We develop multiple criteria for evaluating the tools, while believing this paper could be of use to give a hint how to improve remote as well as co-located collaborative designing by sketch. Architectural designing is a very sensitive topic when it comes to sketching. Finally, we would like to compare the newly developed tool to this list and suggest improvements or experiments that help its finalizing.

title Espacialização da informação via ambient display: aspectos técnicos e observações do uso de uma interface tangível [Information spatialization via ambient display: technical aspects and use observations of a tangible interface]
source SIGraDi 2010_Proceedings of the 14th Congress of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics, pp. Bogotá, Colombia, November 17-19, 2010, pp. 423-426
summary This article presents the description and evaluation of a tangible interface to facilitate a collaborative work process. It starts with the concept of ambient display, which refers to the presentation of information in space or in an object through subtle changes. After describing the developed interface, some observations from the operation of the device are presented. We conclude that ambient displays should not be used as replacements to conventional tools, but instead, as complementary elements, and that it is also important to ensure their application as a method to restore a lost balance between tangible predispositions and the center of attention.
