summary This work constitutes one of the main lines of visual exploration derived from the photographic work done by the author. As an architect that makes and investigates photography, his exercises of art study the translations from visual perception of architectonic space to its photographic simulation, work that so far has only been done and exhibited in large format. The work here presented is based on projects undertaken from 2007 to 2010 and mainly elaborates on a recent project to be soon exhibited in Concepción between January and March 2013.

summary Mathematics has been the interest of architects for hundreds of years and has been used in projects ranging from the Denmark Pavilion at Expo 2010 to Gaudi’s cathedral. Generative form finding frequently takes the inspiration of the geometric aesthetic found in mathematic forms. Today, the influence of digital computation technology is increasingly evident in architectural form seeking and analysis as they relate to mathematics. The sculptural possibilities of math forms have reconditioned the design process that establishes new modeling and tectonic approaches. This paper focuses on the study of current constraints and new procedures within mathematical approaches to architecture. Furthermore, this paper describes three experimental projects exploring mathematically driven designs and their potential within architectural vocabulary. In these experiments, the designers and students explored the manipulation of a planar surface through algorithmic equations and the molecular make-up of a surface through voxel representation.

title Not Just Another Pretty Face

summary Digital Heritage has gained popularity recently as means of dynamically representing and reconstructing historic buildings and cityscapes. Simultaneously this new medium of visualization affords another approach to examine human-virtual environment interaction and offers possibilities of exploiting virtual environments as educational tools. At Zayed University, a federal university primarily for women citizens of the United Arab Emirates, we have integrated student-faculty research and documented and reconstructed a number of historical buildings within the curriculum of the Department of Art and Design. We have further collaborated with the animation program at Winston Salem State University in North Carolina, utilizing the motion capture laboratory at the Center of Design Innovation to literally breathe life into these reconstructions. The primary idea is to contribute to the ongoing documentation of the country’s heritage through creating “responsive virtual heritage environments” where the spectator is actively engaged in exploring the digital space and gain certain degrees of control over the course and scheme of the dynamic experience. The process begins by introducing students to utilize the diverse capabilities of CAD and three dimensional computer applications and intertwine the technical skills they acquire to construct virtual computer models of indigenous built environments. The workflow between the different applications is crucial to stimulate students’ problem solving abilities and tame the application tools, specifically when constructing complex objects and structural details. In addition the spatial and temporal specificity different computer applications afford has proven useful in highlighting and analyzing the buildings’ function within the extreme climate of the country and their role in the political-economy, particularly in visualizing the ephemeral qualities of the architecture as they relate to passive cooling and the inter-relationships between built and natural environments. Light and time settings clarify shadow casting and explain the placement and orientation of buildings. Particle simulations demonstrate the harnessing of wind and rain both urban and rural settings. The quantitative data accumulated and charted through CAD and VR programs and geo-browsers can be integrated with qualitative data to create a more holistic analytical framework for understanding the complex nature of past settlement patterns. In addition, the dynamic nature of this integration creates a powerful educational tool. This paper reviews this ongoing research project with examples of reconstructions completed across the country, demonstrating analytical and educational possibilities through the integration of CAD programs with a range of other statistical, geographic, and visualization software.

summary The paper focuses on the early stages of the design process where the architect needs assistance in finding reference projects and describes different aspects of a concept for retrieving previous design solutions with similar layout characteristics. Such references are typically used to see how others have solved a similar architectural problem or simply for inspiration. Current electronic search methods use textual information rather than graphical information. The configuration of space and the relations between rooms are hard to represent using keywords, in fact transforming these spatial configurations into verbally expressed typologies tends to result in unclear and often imprecise descriptions of architecture. Nowadays, modern IT-technologies lead to fundamental changes during the process of designing buildings. Digital representations of architecture require suitable approaches to the storage, indexing and management of information as well as adequate retrieval methods. Traditionally planning information is represented in the form of floor plans, elevations, sections and textual descriptions. State of the art digital representations include renderings, computer aided design (CAD) and semantic information like Building Information Modelling (BIM) including 2D and 3D file formats such as Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) (IAI, 2010). In the paper, we examine the development of IT-technologies in the area of case-based reasoning (Richter et al., 2007) to provide a sketch-based submission and retrieval system for publishing and researching building layouts including their manipulation and subsequent use. The user interface focuses on specifying space and their relations by drawing them. This query style supports the spatial thinking approach that architects use, who often have a visual representation in mind without being able to provide an accurate description of the spatial configuration. The semantic fingerprint proposed by (Langenhan, 2008) is a description and query language for creating an index of floor plans to store meta-data about architecture, which can be used as signature for retrieving reference projects. The functional spaces, such as living room or kitchen and the relation among on another, are used to create a fingerprint. Furthermore, we propose a visual sketch-based interface (Weber et al., 2010) based on the Touch&Write paradigm (Liwicki et al., 2010) for the submission and the retrieval phase. During the submission process the architect is sketching the space-boundaries, space relations and functional coherence's. Using state of the art document analysis techniques, the architects are supported offering an automatic detection of room boundaries and their physical relations. During the retrieval the application will interpret the sketches of the architect and find reference projects based on a similarity based search utilizing the semantic fingerprint. By recommending reference projects, architects will be able to reuse collective experience which match the current requirements. The way of performing a search using a sketch as a query is a new way of thinking and working. The retrieval of 3D models based on a sketched shape are already realized in several domains. We already propose a step further, using the semantics of a spatial configuration. Observing the design process of buildings reveals that the initial design phase serves as the foundation for the quality of the later outcome. The sketch-based approach to access valuable information using the semantic fingerprint enables the user to digitally capture knowledge about architecture, to recover and reuse it in common-sense. Furthermore, automatically analysed fingerprints can put forward both commonly used as well as best practice projects. It will be possible to rate architecture according to the fingerprint of a building.

summary Spurring new and innovative building design will be critical to the urban energy and economic future of the nation. The operation of completed buildings account for 48% of the nation’s annual greenhouse gas emissions, and 76% of all electricity generated by U.S. power plants goes to supply the building sector. Therefore developing and applying new and innovative sustainable building design will have a measurable impact on the environment. Recent studies show sustainable building design is closely linked to system integration, where various components of a building work in confluence to produce synergetic benefits. As a result, a critical component of sustainable design involves a clear understanding of building systems operation, interaction, and the selection parameters. A consideration of suitable building systems, gauging their interaction, and proposing well integrated systems can lead to producing efficient models of sustainable buildings with minimal impact on the environment. The following paper outlines the progress on a project entitled “Building Literacy: the Integration of Building Technology and Design in Architectural Education.” The project develops a digital tool for teaching/learning architectural technology from an integrated systems perspective. The project attempts to immerse students in a simulated environment that is based on the real life practice of architecture. The project accomplishes this by harnessing the capabilities of simulation and dynamic modeling programs, as well as the state of art graphic media, to create compelling and rewarding reasons for students’ engagement in the lear ning process. The project involves a multidisciplinary team of faculty from Florida International University, University at Buffalo the State University of New York, and Iowa State University and is funded by the US Department of Education for the period of 2007-2011.

summary Minimal surfaces have been gradually translated from mathematics to architectural design research due to their fascinating geometric and spatial properties. Tensile structures are just an example of their application in architecture known since the early 1960s. The present research relates to the problem of generating minimal surface geometries computationally using self-organizing particle spring systems and optimizing them for digital fabrication. The algorithm is iterative and it has a different approach than a standard computational method, such as dynamic relaxation, because it does not start with a pre-defined topology and it consists of simultaneous processes that control the geometry’s tessellation. The method is tested on triply periodic minimal surfaces and focused on several fabrication techniques such as a tensegrity modular system composed of interlocked rings (Figure 1).

summary While patterns have a spotty history in architecture, their definitions and uses in other fields offer new possibilities for design. This paper examines those definitions and uses—including theories put forward by architectural theorist, Christopher Alexander; art educator, Gyorgy Kepes; chemist, Ilya Prigogine; and anthropologist, Gregory Bateson. Of particular interest is the shift from eternal, essential, universal, and fundamental patterns to fleeting, superficial, specific, and incidental versions. While endemic to many contemporary architectural practices, this multifaceted view of patterns was anticipated by Bateson, who saw them as agents of evolution and learning. His desire to combine redundancy and noise offers architects new ways to understand patterns and use them to link form and information, matter and thought.

summary Multidisciplinary efforts that have shaped the current integration of multimedia into architectural spaces have primarily been conducted by collaborative efforts among art, engineering, interaction design, informatics and software programming. These collaborations have focused on the complexities of designing for applications of multimedia in specific real world contexts. Outside a small but growing number of researchers and practitioners, architects have been largely absent from these efforts. This has resulted in projects that deal primarily with developing technologies augmenting existing architectural environments. (Greenfield and Shepard 2007)This paper examines the potential of multimedia and architecture integration to create new possibilities for architectural space. Established practices of constructing architecture suggest creating space by conventional architectural means. On the other hand, multimedia influences and their effect on the tectonics, topos and typos (Frampton 2001) of an architectural space (‘multimedia effects matrix’) suggest new modes of shaping space. It is proposed that correlations exist between those two that could inform unified design strategies. Case study analyses were conducted examining five works of interactive spaces and multimedia installation artworks, selected from an initial larger study of 25 works. Each case study investigated the means of shaping space employed, according to both conventional architectural practices and the principles of multimedia influence (in reference to the ‘multimedia effects matrix’) (James and Nagasaka 2010, 278-285). Findings from the case studies suggest strong correlations between the two approaches to spatial construction. To indicate these correlations, this paper presents five speculative integrative design strategies derived from the case studies, intended to inform future architectural design practice.

Thus, by broaching the creative process, one must realize that thinking devices already represent a notable strategy of the arts, and that such devices, engendered by new media, are gradually incorporated by contemporary architects.

summary This paper gives insight into an ongoing funded research project dealing with architectural geometry and nonstandard fabrication methods. The innovative aspect of the project lies in the way it uses geometric ornamentation as a method to control the construction of double curved free-form surfaces out of planar building elements. After a short outline of the state of the art the paper gives an overview of the project’s novel constructive and esthetic approach to the planarization of curved forms, discusses the implications of the approach and presents some preliminary results.

summary In architecture schools, where the ‘studio culture’ lies at the heart of students’ learning, taught courses, particularly technology ones, are often seen as secondary or supplementary units. Successful delivery of such courses, where students can act effectively, be motivated and engaged, is a rather demanding task requiring careful planning and the use of various teaching styles. A recent challenge that faces architecture education today, and subsequently influences the way technology courses are being designed, is the growing trend in practice towards environmentally responsive design and the need for graduates with new skills in sustainable construction and urban ecology (HEFCE’s consultation document, 2005). This article presents the role of innovative simulation modelling tools in the enhancement of the student learning experience and professional development. Reference is made to a teaching practice that has recently been applied at Portsmouth School of Architecture in the United Kingdom and piloted at Deakin University in Australia. The work focuses on the structure and delivery of one of the two main technology units in the second year architecture programme that underwent two main phases of revision during the academic years 2009/10 and 2010/11. The article examines the inclusion of advanced daylight simulation modelling tools in the unit programme, and measures the effectiveness of enhancing its delivery as a key component of the curriculum on the student learning experience. A main objective of the work was to explain whether or not the introduction of a simulation modelling component, and the later improvement of its integration with the course programme and assessment, has contributed to a better learning experience and level of engagement. Student feedback and the grade distribution pattern over the last three academic years were collected and analyzed. The analysis of student feedback on the revised modelling component showed a positive influence on the learning experience and level of satisfaction and engagement. An improvement in student performance was also recorded over the last two academic years and following the implementation of new assessment design.

We describe the professional challenges that the KPF Cloud Tools platform solves, document the technical implementation of the platform, and illustrate its benefit through the impact on a large architectural practice.

summary Considering mathematical knowledge as an artefact that mediates social activities in the world, this paper emphasizes the contribution of visual thinking to mathematics education and extends it to the learning of design activities, especially in architectural contexts. Results from a previous research paper on architectural design, which focused on the work of some contemporary architects in their day - to - day office activities, showed the relevance of drawing in architectural practice. These results aroused our interest in researching the mediating role of drawing and its structuring effects on creative processes and design activities in architecture.

summary This paper documents research of a design process that interrelates a single information model to 5-axis, waterjet cutting technology. With the intention of creating an optimized design, data is streamed through a building information model that controls geometry parametrically by a component/system relationship. At the scale of a 4’x8’ panel, material properties and pattern variability act as underlying initiators of design rather than post-rational information. In a manner uncommon to the discipline, the information model is being used as a generative tool, rather than as one for mere documentation. The research assigns a limestone wall type to the panel—a material predominantly used in areas where it is indigenous and typically desirable for its texture, color, and thermal properties. The intention is to develop potentialities through material specificity in the information model’s conceptualization. The water-jet process is then used to erode the limestone to achieve varying fields of scalar voids. In addition, the thickness of wall cladding attenuates for figuration and interest. The final stone panels transition from a rain screen system to a solar screen that modulates light, thereby linking environmental intentions to current technological capabilities. The information model is exported for analysis of daylight and structural dynamic qualities and quantities as part of the workflow. Parameters within the information model database facilitate a dimensionally controlled iterative process. Moreover, fabricating with building materials via the information model expedites a design and makes possible for materiality to move beyond merely conceptual representation.

summary Digital fabrication and parametric tools require not only digital dexterity but a robust material sensibility that precedes digital mediation. Developed through Gaston Bachelard’s concept of the graft, the material imagination acts as a reciprocal creative intelligence to today’s dominant formal imagination enabled through the fluid geometric precision in digital tools. This paper presents a series of “materials first” pedagogical approaches through which material constraints become operative design criteria in the development of digital skills. This intersection between analog and digital systems develops a parametric sensibility that is demonstrated through physical prototypes and full-scale installations. This approach is implicitly a critique of the disregard of material logic in many parametric approaches in particular, and digital design culture in general. Conversely, the development of a parametric sensibility through analog means enables the development of material primitives from which parametric tools can expand the material imagination while giving structure to it.

summary Students can begin utilizing the computer as a tool in the first year of their education in the same way they begin drawing, modeling, and diagramming as a basis for developing progressively deeper understandings of the capabilities and limitations of these instruments and their particular roles within the process of design. This hypothesis is being tested in Virginia Tech’s School of Architecture + Design over the course of the 2010-11 academic year by seeding a series of digital workshops into the beginning design curriculum.
