summary The creation of a 3D city model is usually a very time-consuming process and due to the constant development of the city it also has to be updated accordingly. One of the problems with large 3D city models is that they contain a huge amount of data that has to be stored and processed when it is used. The storage and management of the models are therefore a very important issue. The management issue is often that many people are collaborating and working on the 3D city model at the same time and are located at physically different locations. In this paper we present an application for collaboration, maintenance and storing of 3D city models using an open-source subversion controlled system. It is a client server based with a file-based structure on the client side. This system is not as complex as the Oracle database and is not limited to a specific file format. We have integrated the revision control system into our VR application but it is also possible to have external revision control using a default file manager, such as Explorer in Microsoft Windows. The system has been tested in three different virtual reality projects, all applied to urban planning.

summary Rapid developments in societal, technological, and natural systems suggest profound changes ahead if research in panarchical systems (Holling, 2001) is to be believed. Panarchy suggests that systems, both natural and man-made, rise to the point of vulnerability then fail due to disruptive forces in a process of ‘creative destruction.’ This sequence allows for radical, and often unpredictable, renewal. Pressing sustainability concerns, burgeoning urban growth, and emergent ‘green manufacturing’ laws, suggest that future urban dwellings are headed toward Gladwell’s ‘tipping point’ (2002). Hyper-dense, sustainable, urban communities that employ open-source standards, parametric software, and web-based configurators are the new frontier for venerable visions. Open-source standards will permit the design, manufacture, and sale of highly diverse, inter-operable components to create compact urban living environments that are technologically sophisticated, sustainable, and mobile. These mass-customised dwellings, akin to branded consumer goods, will address previous shortcomings for prefabricated, mobile dwellings by stimulating consumer desire in ways that extend the arguments of both Joseph Pine (1992) and Anna Klingman (2007). Arguments presented by authors Makimoto and Manners (1997) – which assert that the adoption of digital and mobile technologies will create large-scale societal shifts – will be extended with several solutions proposed.

summary This paper discusses the relationship between linear and circular conceptions of causality and questions the common mutually-exclusive bivalent logic applied in distinguishing them. It argues that (circular) conversation and (linear) control both have their place in the design process. This calls for open minds and a reconsideration of value systems in CAAD practice and research, without which CAAD remains the futile attempt to deploy techniques developed to identify and enforce linear causation for the benefit of a practice that depends upon circular causality.

summary Digital Fabrication and Hybrid Interface: Lessons in Agriculture :abstract Two vitally important fields of work in architecture and computing—in digital fabrication methods and in the development of interfaces between digital and analog systems—can find new forms in their combination with one another. Moreover, a recent such experiment in the production of landscape rather than building not only suggests a number of implications for architectural work, but of ecological, economic and urban structures that underlie the projects’s visible formal and aesthetic orders. This project, “Hyperculture: Earth as Interface,” studied the potential outcomes of modifying a commonly employed information infrastructure for the optimization of agricultural production throughout most of America’s heartland; and that same infrastructure’s latent flexibility to operate in both “read” and “write” modes, as a means for collaborative input and diversified, shared output. In the context of industrialized agriculture, this work not only negotiates seemingly contradictory demands with diametrically opposed ecological and social outcomes; but also shows the fabrication of landscape as suggestive of other, more architectural applications in the built environment. The Hyperculture project is sited within several contexts: industrial, geographically local, ecological, and within the digital protocols of landscape processing known as “precision agriculture.” Today, these typically work together toward the surprising result of unvariegated repetition, known commonly as monoculture. After decades of monoculture’s proliferation, its numerous inefficiencies have come under broad recent scrutiny, leading to diverse thinking on ways to redress seemingly conflicting demands such as industry’s reliance on mass-production and automation; the demand for variety or customization in consumer markets; and even regulatory inquiries into the ecological and zoning harms brought by undiversified land use. Monoculture, in short, is proving unsustainable from economic, environmental, and even aesthetic and zoning standpoints. But its handling in digital interfaces, remote sensing and algorithmically directed fabrication is not.

summary Building Information Modelling (BIM) is expected to enable efficient collaboration, improved data integrity, distributed and flexible data sharing, intelligent documentation, and high-quality outcome, through enhanced performance analysis, and expedited multi-disciplinary planning and coordination. Despite these apparent benefits, the collaboration across the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) disciplines is largely based on the exchange of 2D drawings. This paper reports the findings from a research project that aims at developing measures to enhance BIM-based collaboration in the AEC industry. Based on focus group interviews with industry participants and case studies of BIM applications, visualisation was identified as an interactive platform across the design and non-design disciplines. It is argued that visualisation can enhance the motivation for BIM-based collaboration through integration of advanced visualisation techniques such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). An AR interface for a BIM server is also presented and discussed in the paper. AR can open up potential opportunities for exploring alternatives to data representation, organisation and interaction, supporting seamless collaboration in BIM.

summary This paper positions the domain of interactive architecture (iA) and searches for an appropriate model for structure and processing of information in the design and operation of such architecture. It is shown that there are different approaches to ways in which iA system models can be defined, each with numerous advantages and disadvantages. However, due to complexity of encountered problems, application of such models can be only partially validated by simulation and hence their design is inherently dependent on creation of operational and experiential full-scale prototypes of the systems these models represent. Another observation is the lack of correspondence between existing iA models and other contemporary models of computation for architectural geometry, fabrication and engineering. A meta-model for extensible multi-agent interactive architecture (xMAiA) is consequently proposed as a remedy to this situation. xMAiA meta-model is aimed to provide an open framework for integrated evolution, development and operation of interactive architectural systems. It delivers an extensible platform, in which diverse, project-specific models and approaches can be implemented, tested, and further evolved. Such a platform has the potential to empower agile development and operation of interactive architectural ecologies, as well as to substantially facilitate integration of creative design and experiential prototyping from day-1 of project design and development cycle. An example application conforming to the xMAiA meta-model is consequently presented and illustrated with a case study project performed in the university education context.

summary A design studio and a parallel research project focused on transformable fabric architecture. To facilitate a part of this work, computer based shape generation tools were used to optimize the placement of thin-film photovoltaic cells onto a transformable roof structure. In addition, the tension membrane fabric is rigged in a way that is similar to a sailing boat. The fabric is set into position by winches and cables. The winches are hand-operated so as to lower the overall energy cost. The initial computer models proceeded concurrently with the mockup of small-scale physical prototypes. In addition, the author used an open source programming language to implement a particle spring real time simulation of the fabric shapes. The simulation included a three-dimensional graphical representation of solar insolation and helped to further determine the physical geometry of the project. One of the goals was to evaluate whether larger transformations to the structure as a whole or smaller movements in the fabric would help to optimize the solar insolation benefits. As the examination of potential forms narrowed down to classical saddle shapes, the practical details of rigging the fabric imposed further limitations on its transformable nature. This paper is focused on how modeling with ad hoc tools and especially real-time computer simulation influenced the direction of the work.

summary Energy performance modelling can provide insights into the efficiency and sustainability of commercial buildings, and also the achievement of certification standards such as USGBC LEED. However, the results from the modelling must be validated via a post-construction evaluation, which quantifies any discrepancies between the predicted energy usage and the actual energy consumed. In this study, an existing office building was examined to test how well the model predicts energy usage. The results from the model were compared with the actual usage of gas and electricity over two years (2010-2011). Our study showed a 123% higher gas usage,and a 36% lower electricity, compared with the simulation. This difference presents that occupant behaviour and building construction practices have significant impact on the energy usage of a building. For instance, the large discrepancy among gas usage is due to the office building’s thermal envelope, which identifies the spots at which heat leaks out of the building, thereby forcing the heating unit to work more. Additionally, the post occupancy evaluation study identified that indoor environmental conditions impact on energy consumption of the building.

summary Information is ubiquitous due to the digitization of our world. There is an unprecedented volume of information in our physical and socially networked world that can be used to inform our design problems and the way we design. To date, designers of parametric models have been using design precedents, archived data, and simulated datasets to inform their modeling process, but live information sources from the environment are rarely considered as direct input to models. The paper discusses novel experiments in which digital parametric design models are extended with live input and parameters from physical environments and online social networks. The paper also presents UbiMash, an open source software platform that was introduced and refined during the dev elopment of these experiments.

summary Urban spatial models are important to many professions, and they can be used in a wide range of urban decision - making applications. This paper describes a methodology for automatic generation of an urban spatial model from a GIS source. The methodology uses a Voronoi polygon - based method in order to split the urban space. After partitioning the GIS, functional characteristics are used to generate zones of interest at each Voronoi polygon. The paper also presents examples of applications of the model: a two dimensional model used for microsimulation of traffic, and a three - dimensional model used for simulation of air pollution.

summary AUTOMATED COST ANALYSIS OF CONCEPT DESIGN BIM MODELS Interoperability: BIM models and cost models This paper introduces the automated cost analysis developed for the General Services Administration (GSA) and the analysis results of a case study involving a concept design courthouse BIM model. The purpose of this study is to investigate interoperability issues related to integrating design and analysis tools; specifically BIM models and cost models. Previous efforts to generate cost estimates from BIM models have focused on developing two necessary but disjoint processes: 1) extracting accurate quantity take off data from BIM models, and 2) manipulating cost analysis results to provide informative feedback. Some recent efforts involve developing detailed definitions, enhanced IFC-based formats and in-house standards for assemblies that encompass building models (e.g. US Corps of Engineers). Some commercial applications enhance the level of detail associated to BIM objects with assembly descriptions to produce lightweight BIM models that can be used by different applications for various purposes (e.g. Autodesk for design review, Navisworks for scheduling, Innovaya for visual estimating, etc.). This study suggests the integration of design and analysis tools by means of managing all building data in one shared repository accessible to multiple domains in the AEC industry (Eastman, 1999; Eastman et al., 2008; authors, 2010). Our approach aims at providing an integrated platform that incorporates a quantity take off extraction method from IFC models, a cost analysis model, and a comprehensive cost reporting scheme, using the Solibri Model Checker (SMC) development environment. Approach As part of the effort to improve the performance of federal buildings, GSA evaluates concept design alternatives based on their compliance with specific requirements, including cost analysis. Two basic challenges emerge in the process of automating cost analysis for BIM models: 1) At this early concept design stage, only minimal information is available to produce a reliable analysis, such as space names and areas, and building gross area, 2) design alternatives share a lot of programmatic requirements such as location, functional spaces and other data. It is thus crucial to integrate other factors that contribute to substantial cost differences such as perimeter, and exterior wall and roof areas. These are extracted from BIM models using IFC data and input through XML into the Parametric Cost Engineering System (PACES, 2010) software to generate cost analysis reports. PACES uses this limited dataset at a conceptual stage and RSMeans (2010) data to infer cost assemblies at different levels of detail. Functionalities Cost model import module The cost model import module has three main functionalities: generating the input dataset necessary for the cost model, performing a semantic mapping between building type specific names and name aggregation structures in PACES known as functional space areas (FSAs), and managing cost data external to the BIM model, such as location and construction duration. The module computes building data such as footprint, gross area, perimeter, external wall and roof area and building space areas. This data is generated through SMC in the form of an XML file and imported into PACES. Reporting module The reporting module uses the cost report generated by PACES to develop a comprehensive report in the form of an excel spreadsheet. This report consists of a systems-elemental estimate that shows the main systems of the building in terms of UniFormat categories, escalation, markups, overhead and conditions, a UniFormat Level III report, and a cost breakdown that provides a summary of material, equipment, labor and total costs. Building parameters are integrated in the report to provide insight on the variations among design alternatives.

summary This paper aims to discuss alternative and innovative plan models for Chinese cities that are currently under rapid development. Our study considers Complexity Theories of Cities as theoretical base and applies a holistic approach in city planning by recognizing the complex nature of city. We strive to integrate the diverse local structure in social and spatial aspects with the ambition and demands of city’s expansion. Digital sequence simulation is used as an innovative tool to represent local activities, promote interventions and predict possible self-organization process in the future. The study arrives at an open scenario the feasible prospect. A conclusion is drawn to reflect the process, achievement and weakness of the research.

summary Media façades grant infinitely many faces to a building and can change the architectural meaning of what a façade is. They can also help to transform the face of the building into an over-size communication device for public (Borras, 2010). Contemporary media façades mostly rely on the content of their screens, and only a small number of them physicality of the screen itself. Precedent building façades that incorporate moving componentsareunable to function as displays. In this paper we present a media façade design, titled“Tran[s]quillity”, in which we fuse reconfigurable building com-ponents with display technologies to achieve a unique design. As well as fulfilling the function of a regular media wall -as a crisp screen- we imagine Tran[s]quillity as a transformable kinetic sculpture that can act as a screen of physical depth to introduce greater functionality and interactivity.

summary This paper critically reflects on computational methods of design in relation to social and environmental sustainability design research within contemporary and future tall building typology. It develops the author’s experience in large-scale building design practice into academic design research. The analysis of tall building typology is presented initially in the context of practice, followed by its development in an architectural master’s studio. The authors discuss their design research within a practice context that determined the question: what opportunities do computational processes offer to the conception of the tall building typology? Its transference to an educational research context allowed for the deeper exploration and development of a position on algorithmic and parametric methods, their relevance to the typology of the contemporary tall building and complex architectural scenarios.

summary Complexity as a result of improved design capabilities through the use of computer tools was introduced in the architectural debate since these became irreplaceable. On the other hand, not every designer is genuinely aware of the logical implications that the use of these tools may entail. Used as a simple emulation of enhanced traditional design tools—drawings and models, they do not alter the process of design significantly. However, the potential of such tools beyond their instrumentality introduces designers into the realm of digital consciousness. This paper analyzes complexity as an inherent quality of computer aided architectural design in relation to four different digitally conscious design strategies. First, the increase of complexity involved in digital architectural designs because of their potentiality to manage enormous amounts of differentiated information. Second, the complexity inherent to an open form such as parametric or generative designs may be defined. Third, the use of the computer as a smart partner involved in the design process —i.e., form finding strategies— rather than as a simple efficient machine able to repeat our abilities faster and more effectively in certain roles of the design process. Finally, it analyzes the possibility of generating parameterized typologies as a result of the openness of form, as well as the increased complexity that randomness may introduce in algorithmic design. The paper concludes with reflections on complexity vs. simplexity considering the fact that the simplicity characteristic of Modernism aesthetics and constructive values collide with the baroque formal complexity achieved in generative design.

summary This paper presents reflections stemmed from a research that seeks to cast a gaze toward the diversity of ways of living in communities, starting from the interaction in communicational processes structured by digital means. This paper introduces findings on the possibilities of similarities between people of different groups in a community in hybrid instances, starting from cultural activities. Further explorations about the potential and qualifications of the use of digital media for this purpose will also be presented. The trials that comprise the object of reflection in this article took place and were only achievable for being part of a larger public policy project, funded by an important Brazilian research funding agency. The project has been in development since March 2010 by the research group of a recognized leading university and involves post-doctoral, doctoral and master researchers. Additionally, the project has partnership with various third sector institutions such as NGOs and collectives, as well as music bands and European universities.

summary Nineteenth century models of education and learning which dictate that information is passed on from teacher to apprentice :abstract in a closed classroom environment seem archaic to us, especially since so much of our experiences are constructed in the outside world. Advances in ubiquitous and calm computing; social and immersive media; and urban locative technologies now allow for embedding complex information into physical environments and thus open up possibilities for teachers to set up carefully tagged student engagements in the real world—in “places” where real scientific phenomena are happening and technological artifacts can be engaged with. However these models are seldom successful because they are employed without an understanding of changing paradigms of learning. In this paper, we look at several new developments in learning models and use them to develop Just in Place learning, a novel framework which harnesses embodiment, place, and the potential of new locative technologies to augment traditional practice-based learning. Just in Place learning provides new potential for teachers and students to engage with information in “place,” exploit the urban environment as the new classroom, and the built environment as a portal for situated learning.

summary The purpose of this paper is to make apparent critical and theoretical aspects of the instrumentation of new technologies inside architectural processes. After twenty five years of “Choral Work” between architecture and post-structuralist philosophy superimposed together inside architectural processes, we now face a new technological era which seems to provide a new figure of authority by replacing logocentrism to mathematical logicocentrism. Everywhere, the “insemination” of computer by biogenetic algorithms and codification processes transform matter into a zoocentric paradigmatic system, which is supposed, by its internal “modulation,” to extend our potential of social dynamics into space. The goal of our demonstration will then be to examine new technical and theoretical strategies, in a way that the positivistic structure of computation can avoid a totalizing effect (that leading architecture under technological domination), but open up to an un-programmable (emergent) future far above “weaving” and calculated design.
