summary The paper proposes integrated design and building systems for the provision of sustainable customized housing. It advances previous work by applying a methodology to generate these systems from vernacular precedents. The methodology is based on the use of shape grammars to derive and encode a contemporary system from the precedents. The combined set of rules can be applied to generate housing solutions tailored to specific user and site contexts. The provision of housing to shelter the population affected by the 2010 Haiti earthquake illustrates the application of the methodology. A computer implementation is currently under development in C# using the BIM platform provided by Revit. The world experiences a sharp increase in population and a strong urbanization process. These phenomena call for the development of effective means to solve the resulting housing deficit. The response of the informal sector to the problem, which relies mainly on handcrafted processes, has resulted in an increase of urban slums in many of the big cities, which lack sanitary and spatial conditions. The formal sector has produced monotonous environments based on the idea of mass production that one size fits all, which fails to meet individual and cultural needs. We propose an alternative approach in which mass customization is used to produce planed environments that possess qualities found in historical settlements. Mass customization, a new paradigm emerging due to the technological developments of the last decades, combines the economy of scale of mass production and the aesthetics and functional qualities of customization. Mass customization of housing is defined as the provision of houses that respond to the context in which they are built. The conceptual model for the mass customization of housing used departs from the idea of a housing type, which is the combined result of three systems (Habraken, 1988) -- spatial, building system, and stylistic -- and it includes a design system, a production system, and a computer system (Duarte, 2001). In previous work, this conceptual model was tested by developing a computer system for existing design and building systems (Benr__s and Duarte, 2009). The current work advances it by developing new and original design, building, and computer systems for a particular context. The urgent need to build fast in the aftermath of catastrophes quite often overrides any cultural concerns. As a result, the shelters provided in such circumstances are indistinct and impersonal. However, taking individual and cultural aspects into account might lead to a better identification of the population with their new environment, thereby minimizing the rupture caused in their lives. As the methodology to develop new housing systems is based on the idea of architectural precedents, choosing existing vernacular housing as a precedent permits the incorporation of cultural aspects and facilitates an identification of people with the new housing. In the Haiti case study, we chose as a precedent a housetype called “gingerbread houses”, which includes a wide range of houses from wealthy to very humble ones. Although the proposed design system was inspired by these houses, it was decided to adopt a contemporary take. The methodology to devise the new type was based on two ideas: precedents and transformations in design. In architecture, the use of precedents provides designers with typical solutions for particular problems and it constitutes a departing point for a new design. In our case, the precedent is an existing housetype. It has been shown (Duarte, 2001) that a particular housetype can be encoded by a shape grammar (Stiny, 1980) forming a design system. Studies in shape grammars have shown that the evolution of one style into another can be described as the transformation of one shape grammar into another (Knight, 1994). The used methodology departs takes off from these ideas and it comprises the following steps (Duarte, 2008): (1) Selection of precedents, (2) Derivation of an archetype; (3) Listing of rules; (4) Derivation of designs; (5) Cataloguing of solutions; (6) Derivation of tailored solution.

It seeks to test generative procedures and digital manufacturing to develop a flexible building system for low - cost sustainable housing in order to inspire future developments in this field by developing an urban grammar through manufacturing models and generative programming, as well as parametric design of panels assembled using digital fabrication. Scale models and full - scale prototype with timber boards have been built, demonstrating the feasibility of the approach proposed. However, further refinement of the adopted procedures and technical applications is required.

summary A new housing complex on the Campus of the University of Patras, Greece, is expected to serve as a test-bed for experimentation with a parametric design process that integrates significant climatic data. To optimize the environmental performance of the proposed housing complex a parametric design algorithm has been developed. The algorithm links the weather data in the area with the site topography and the basic geometric features of the buildings on the site. To explore the interaction of the building features with the prevailing winds in the area and the solar exposure throughout the year various software applications, including computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, have been utilized. The inclusion of wind data in the algorithm renders it particularly effective. The developed parametric process has been useful during the early design phase when studies on various patterns for arranging the buildings on the site were conducted. The parametric process has facilitated the configuration of the typical building block as well.

summary The goal of this research is to see what the influence is of reducing the energy consumption on the building layout. It is our expectation that increasing the energy reduction of buildings cannot continues without changing the layout of the building and/ or the layout f the neighborhood. During our experiments we noticed a strange phenomenon which contradicts our assumption. This paper is about the strange phenomenon we encounter and why it happened.

summary The imminent disruption of the modern paradigms of serialization, repetition and standardization, poses us a myriad of new questions regarding both the emerging aesthetics and the upcoming production means for a new architecture. Despite the canonic approach in which architects tend to invest, the public and private demand for mass housing production is increasing at an astonishing rate, requiring architects to rethink traditional— modern—strategies and to gain control over contemporary—digital—tools. This paper describes an academic research project focused on the implementation of such tools. Some related work is presented, emphasizing some of the approaches in parametric plan layout generation. And a case study is formulated in which the mass design of serially customized layouts is prepared to be solved through a beta plugin for Rhino – Grasshopper.

summary This paper demonstrates how digitally fabricated vacuum-formed components can provide a new type of efficient construction applicable to architecture. Vacuum forming has the advantage of rapid mass-production capability of 3D curved forms. Recent digital fabrication technologies, such as 3D CAD and CNC machining, have dramatically reduced the cost and time for making the mould. In combination with biodegradable plastic, such as PLA (poly lactic acid) made of biopolymer, it could open up new type of sustainable construction system, which is applicable for temporal disaster housings or exhibition booths.

summary Digital Fabrication and Hybrid Interface: Lessons in Agriculture :abstract Two vitally important fields of work in architecture and computing—in digital fabrication methods and in the development of interfaces between digital and analog systems—can find new forms in their combination with one another. Moreover, a recent such experiment in the production of landscape rather than building not only suggests a number of implications for architectural work, but of ecological, economic and urban structures that underlie the projects’s visible formal and aesthetic orders. This project, “Hyperculture: Earth as Interface,” studied the potential outcomes of modifying a commonly employed information infrastructure for the optimization of agricultural production throughout most of America’s heartland; and that same infrastructure’s latent flexibility to operate in both “read” and “write” modes, as a means for collaborative input and diversified, shared output. In the context of industrialized agriculture, this work not only negotiates seemingly contradictory demands with diametrically opposed ecological and social outcomes; but also shows the fabrication of landscape as suggestive of other, more architectural applications in the built environment. The Hyperculture project is sited within several contexts: industrial, geographically local, ecological, and within the digital protocols of landscape processing known as “precision agriculture.” Today, these typically work together toward the surprising result of unvariegated repetition, known commonly as monoculture. After decades of monoculture’s proliferation, its numerous inefficiencies have come under broad recent scrutiny, leading to diverse thinking on ways to redress seemingly conflicting demands such as industry’s reliance on mass-production and automation; the demand for variety or customization in consumer markets; and even regulatory inquiries into the ecological and zoning harms brought by undiversified land use. Monoculture, in short, is proving unsustainable from economic, environmental, and even aesthetic and zoning standpoints. But its handling in digital interfaces, remote sensing and algorithmically directed fabrication is not.

summary In this paper we investigate the possibilities of new typologies of urban public space for high density environments. The premise for the project would be that with new high-density typologies, it would be necessary to consider a difference in the nature of urban public spaces rather than a difference in degree from the status quo. From observations of urban patterns that drive collective, hybrid spaces around Asia, relationships between urban attributes are drawn. For this paper we shall focus on the particular case of Linked Hybrid, Beijing, China, as an elevated urban public space. A literature review focuses on reviewing key theories to construct and adopt a rating system to develop an empirical framework to evaluate the case studies and extract the key attributes. These rated attributes are then abstracted in a real-time model that enables user manipulation. The purpose is to create a tool to better observe the effects and evolution of planning decisions for future urban spaces in high density contexts. The preliminary results are consistent with the idea that selected spatial parameters of a space may be embedded into a “barcode” and referenced as a type. The combination of different types, hence their parameters may be used for effective replication of their characteristics to improve the decision-making process for urban designers. The research is not intended to reproduce the successful urban public spaces but rather result in a catalogue of typologies which can be referred to during the initial stages of planning to provide an indication of spatial qualities.

summary It is perhaps no longer relevant to discuss digital tools purely as means in themselves; the growth of abstract systems or computational patterns for their own sake simply strain justification in light of real-world concerns such as climate change and economic crises. While growing concerns over climate change have necessitated an increased interest in sustainable urbanism and design, sustainability has done little to yet alter the morphological and typological consequences of architectural space (Hardy, 2008). In a series of overlapping research projects and design studio briefs, students, research assistants and we worked with the iterative and variable processes of Rhinoscript, McNeel’s Grasshopper and Bentley’s Generative Components to explore the possibilities of changing environmental extremes (specifically flooding) as catalysts for providing new urban morphologies and spatial organizations. Working between the master plan and the individual housing unit, we investigated arrays of terrace homes in the London Thames Valley flood zones while simultaneously exploring the potential for computational generation and parametric optimization.

summary The concept maps built and shared on the internet through the CmapTools software resources were used in this exploratory study to follow and analyze the process of collaborative design in public school learning situations. The samples, taken from a Brazilian architectural graduate public school, were maps built in housing design projects developed in a digital environment. A constructivist approach supports the learning method in the use of the net environment for collaborative design of sustainable social housing. This is the base for further development of alternative methodological - theoretical approaches in the context of teaching sustainable design.

summary AUTOMATED COST ANALYSIS OF CONCEPT DESIGN BIM MODELS Interoperability: BIM models and cost models This paper introduces the automated cost analysis developed for the General Services Administration (GSA) and the analysis results of a case study involving a concept design courthouse BIM model. The purpose of this study is to investigate interoperability issues related to integrating design and analysis tools; specifically BIM models and cost models. Previous efforts to generate cost estimates from BIM models have focused on developing two necessary but disjoint processes: 1) extracting accurate quantity take off data from BIM models, and 2) manipulating cost analysis results to provide informative feedback. Some recent efforts involve developing detailed definitions, enhanced IFC-based formats and in-house standards for assemblies that encompass building models (e.g. US Corps of Engineers). Some commercial applications enhance the level of detail associated to BIM objects with assembly descriptions to produce lightweight BIM models that can be used by different applications for various purposes (e.g. Autodesk for design review, Navisworks for scheduling, Innovaya for visual estimating, etc.). This study suggests the integration of design and analysis tools by means of managing all building data in one shared repository accessible to multiple domains in the AEC industry (Eastman, 1999; Eastman et al., 2008; authors, 2010). Our approach aims at providing an integrated platform that incorporates a quantity take off extraction method from IFC models, a cost analysis model, and a comprehensive cost reporting scheme, using the Solibri Model Checker (SMC) development environment. Approach As part of the effort to improve the performance of federal buildings, GSA evaluates concept design alternatives based on their compliance with specific requirements, including cost analysis. Two basic challenges emerge in the process of automating cost analysis for BIM models: 1) At this early concept design stage, only minimal information is available to produce a reliable analysis, such as space names and areas, and building gross area, 2) design alternatives share a lot of programmatic requirements such as location, functional spaces and other data. It is thus crucial to integrate other factors that contribute to substantial cost differences such as perimeter, and exterior wall and roof areas. These are extracted from BIM models using IFC data and input through XML into the Parametric Cost Engineering System (PACES, 2010) software to generate cost analysis reports. PACES uses this limited dataset at a conceptual stage and RSMeans (2010) data to infer cost assemblies at different levels of detail. Functionalities Cost model import module The cost model import module has three main functionalities: generating the input dataset necessary for the cost model, performing a semantic mapping between building type specific names and name aggregation structures in PACES known as functional space areas (FSAs), and managing cost data external to the BIM model, such as location and construction duration. The module computes building data such as footprint, gross area, perimeter, external wall and roof area and building space areas. This data is generated through SMC in the form of an XML file and imported into PACES. Reporting module The reporting module uses the cost report generated by PACES to develop a comprehensive report in the form of an excel spreadsheet. This report consists of a systems-elemental estimate that shows the main systems of the building in terms of UniFormat categories, escalation, markups, overhead and conditions, a UniFormat Level III report, and a cost breakdown that provides a summary of material, equipment, labor and total costs. Building parameters are integrated in the report to provide insight on the variations among design alternatives.

summary This paper presents a methodological interactive design approach within which structure is integrated into tall building form development. The approach establishes a synergy between generative and analytical tools to allow for parallel interaction of the formal and structural design considerations during the conceptual design phase. An integration of the associative modeling system, Grasshopper, and the structural analysis tool, ETABS was established, and a bi-directional feedback link between the two tools was initiated to guide the iterative from generation process. A design scenario is presented in this paper to demonstrate how the parametric generation and alteration of architectural form can be carried out based on instant feedback on the structural performance. Utilizing such a tool, architects can not only develop improved understanding of structural needs, but also realize their formal ideas structurally and materially.

summary The recent developments in digital technologies and contemporary design tools are initiating new approaches of form-finding based on parametric development of multiple geometries with simultaneous consideration of various aspects. This paper focuses on the use of advanced parametric CAD systems and reformulated construction logics to enhance the potential and possibilities of form finding processes. This approach is exemplified through the “Greenhouse Trauttmansdorff project”. The project demonstrates a form finding approach which is based on defined parameters that not only fulfil aesthetic and functional aspects, but simultaneously take structural properties and the resulting sun shading behaviour into account. We will explore within this paper how – next to the functional and contextual building requirements – required illumination levels inside the greenhouse create a feedback loop between the structural system and its cladding system.

summary This paper documents research of a design process that interrelates a single information model to 5-axis, waterjet cutting technology. With the intention of creating an optimized design, data is streamed through a building information model that controls geometry parametrically by a component/system relationship. At the scale of a 4’x8’ panel, material properties and pattern variability act as underlying initiators of design rather than post-rational information. In a manner uncommon to the discipline, the information model is being used as a generative tool, rather than as one for mere documentation. The research assigns a limestone wall type to the panel—a material predominantly used in areas where it is indigenous and typically desirable for its texture, color, and thermal properties. The intention is to develop potentialities through material specificity in the information model’s conceptualization. The water-jet process is then used to erode the limestone to achieve varying fields of scalar voids. In addition, the thickness of wall cladding attenuates for figuration and interest. The final stone panels transition from a rain screen system to a solar screen that modulates light, thereby linking environmental intentions to current technological capabilities. The information model is exported for analysis of daylight and structural dynamic qualities and quantities as part of the workflow. Parameters within the information model database facilitate a dimensionally controlled iterative process. Moreover, fabricating with building materials via the information model expedites a design and makes possible for materiality to move beyond merely conceptual representation.

summary Behavioural Surfaces is a thesis project in Architecture discussed on December 2010 at the University of Florence. The project explores the surfacespace relationship in which a surface condition, generated from intensive datascapes derived from environmental data, is able to produce spatial differentiation and modulate structural and environmental preformance. Exploiting material self-organization in sea sponges as surfaces that deploy function and performance through curvature modulation and space defi nition, two different surface definition processes were explored to organize the system hierarchy and its performances at two different scales. At the macroscale, the global shape of the building is shaped on the base of isopotential surfaces while at a more detailed level the multi-performance skin system is defi ned upon the triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS).

summary This paper details an initial exploration into the development of a breathing building skin. This research proposes a system of diaphragms as an alternative to the use of fans for distributing volumes of air. The driving concepts for this project are the three types of evolutionary adaptation: flexibility, acclimation, and learning. Of particular interest is how these biological concepts relate to architectural design. Parametric modeling was used throughout the project to study a family of folding geometry. This allowed for the iterative development of a complex part that is capable of being manufactured from a single sheet of material. Preliminary calculations point to this system being several times more energy efficient than a fan at moving a given volume of air per Watt of electricity. This research is significant as it puts forth a potentially energy efficient and highly integrated alternative to fans, while also illustrating a way of relating biological concepts of adaptation to architectural design.

summary Increasingly, digital architectural data will become available through information technology. Yet until now, there were no satisfying methods to query this data for architectural purposes. This paper introduces an information retrieval system for parcels that not only allows searching for specific attributes, but also includes properties of shape and context of the building plots. An automatically generated index stores the relevant spatial properties as normalized bitmap images on several layers. When a query is started, only this index has to be queried and not the complete database. The search process can be controlled through a graphical interface that incorporates the user’s sketches. The retrieved parcels are presented as a sorted list of vector drawings including their contained buildings. With the simplified access to these case-studies, quality and efficiency of the architectural design process could be increased.

summary The paper proposes Parametric Systems Modeling (PSM) as a tool for building and city planning. The outlined method is based on the Systems Modeling Language (SysML) and is intended for design, dimensioning, and optimization of buildings and cities as systems. The approach exceeds the geometric approach, considers additional information from physics, technology, as well as biology, and provides a basis for multidisciplinary analyses and simulations. Its application aims at the exploration of innovative sustainable design solutions at system level. The proposal of an innovative buildinggreenhouse-city system serves to illustrate the approach. Features of this system are closed water cycles, renewable energy use, thermo-chemical energy storage and transport of energy for heating and cooling purposes on the base of desiccants, as well as recycling of CO2 , accumulation of biomass and related soil improvement.

summary This article presents the contribution of our research to the description of the built elements in the site where information is shared by partners who are distant from one another and focused on fields of expertise that are distinct but concurrent. Our work aims to provide an information system that promotes cooperation between the buildings actors, by sharing a unique data model among the partners involved in the building construction processes. It takes into account the technical data needed in the different phases of the supply chain management cycle in the construction field. To answer a cooperative context, our work is based on the fundamental assumption that it is possible to structure a building description following the economist’s view point. During the implementation phase, the different activities on a building site can be described as a model that integrates all the related tasks and includes all the work practices and requirements shared among the partners of the architectural project.
