title Brinquedos, modelos: uma atividade lúdica se transforma em curricular com apoio das novas tecnologias de fabricação digital [Toys, models: a fun activity becomes curriculum, supported by new digital fabrication technologies]
source SIGraDi 2010_Proceedings of the 14th Congress of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics, pp. Bogotá, Colombia, November 17-19, 2010, pp. 73-76
summary This research seeks to assess the use of digital fabrication of toys reusing wood from earlier models produced in undergraduate courses in architecture and design. Froebel (2002) discusses the pedagogical application of blocks of wood that he created, inspired by the information that the architect Frank Lloyd Wright was influenced in his childhood by playing with toy blocks. Among other authors, we found a catalog from the Aladdin factory that is owned by Uruguayan modern artist Torres Garcia. The research aimed to recreate similar educational toys within a context of global crisis and interest in sustainability.

title IDENTIFICAÇÃO DE ESTRUTURAS DE SABER IMPLÍCITAS EM MATERIAIS DIDÁTICOS PARA A DELIMITAÇÃO DE UMA TAXONOMIA DE DOMÍNIO

title Atribuição de metadados como exercício de metacognição para a ação projetual de arquitetura [Metadata attribution as a metacognitive exercise for project action in architecture]
source SIGraDi 2010_Proceedings of the 14th Congress of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics, pp. Bogotá, Colombia, November 17-19, 2010, pp. 69-72
summary The activity of metadata assignment for the cataloging of an architectural design demands, more than time, a process of reflection about the production of architecture. Thus, in this activity seeks a didactic strategy for teaching/learning architectural design, which is interpreted as a mechanism of meta - cognition. Exercises are promoted in which the students of architecture reflect about their own production of designs, assigning key words to characterize them, initially without structured references for this characterization but later establishing a taxonomy of available architectural domain. The results point to the validation of the strategy, demonstrating the potential of the exercise.

title Mapas conceituais e o projeto colaborativo para arquitetura sustentável: ensaios para habitação de interesse social no Brasil [Concept mapping and the collaborative project for sustainable architecture: social housing testing in Brazil]
source SIGraDi 2010_Proceedings of the 14th Congress of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics, pp. Bogotá, Colombia, November 17-19, 2010, pp. 88-91
summary The concept maps built and shared on the internet through the CmapTools software resources were used in this exploratory study to follow and analyze the process of collaborative design in public school learning situations. The samples, taken from a Brazilian architectural graduate public school, were maps built in housing design projects developed in a digital environment. A constructivist approach supports the learning method in the use of the net environment for collaborative design of sustainable social housing. This is the base for further development of alternative methodological - theoretical approaches in the context of teaching sustainable design.

title Yona Friedman: A produção de uma arquitetura baseada no processo de comunicação e no design de repertório [Yona Friedman: the production of an architecture based on the communication process of the design repertoire]
source SIGraDi 2010_Proceedings of the 14th Congress of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics, pp. Bogotá, Colombia, November 17-19, 2010, pp. 427-429
summary This article analyzes the design process of Yona Friedman. Friedman was a conceptual creator of mega - structures that were multiplied in several layers of cities in which users were responsible for choosing designs while being informed of the consequences. They used a computer containing the design options and described their way of life, which was translated into the use of environments. According to the spaces chosen from this list, the user could reconfigure the space. Although, considering that the city was an environment, the space could be selected while watching a computer simulation. Users’ choices depended on absolutely parameterized rules.

source SIGraDi 2010_Proceedings of the 14th Congress of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics, pp. Bogotá, Colombia, November 17-19, 2010, pp. 96-99
summary Two Brazilian academic laboratories at UFMG explored processes for conceptual creation and development of digital guidebooks about architectural drafting design and practice of environmental accessibility for all. It is expected that students may achieve high critical and creative perspectives about knowledge construction in real life contexts by using digital interactive multimedia. This software package allows users to learn freely, at their own pace or location at any time, in a sequence of instruction units. In order to improve students’ autonomy in acquiring learning skills, a new, interdisciplinary, culture seems to push the curriculum beyond conventional techniques.

source SIGraDi 2010_Proceedings of the 14th Congress of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics, pp. Bogotá, Colombia, November 17-19, 2010, pp. 298-300
summary Considering mathematical knowledge as an artefact that mediates social activities in the world, this paper emphasizes the contribution of visual thinking to mathematics education and extends it to the learning of design activities, especially in architectural contexts. Results from a previous research paper on architectural design, which focused on the work of some contemporary architects in their day - to - day office activities, showed the relevance of drawing in architectural practice. These results aroused our interest in researching the mediating role of drawing and its structuring effects on creative processes and design activities in architecture.

summary The state university of Campinas, Unicamp, is a public university in upstate São Paulo, Brazil, ranked the second best in the country. It was founded in 1966, and its main campus started to be built in 1967, in the suburbs of Campinas, nowadays a two-million people city. The area of the campus is almost 3 million square meters (300 hectares), with a total built area of 522.000 m2 and a population of 40 thousand people - 30 thousand students, 2 thousand faculty members and almost 8 thousand staff members. The campus’ gross population density is 133 people per hectare. Less than 6% of the total campus area is presently occupied. The design of Unicamp's campus is based on concepts that were typical of the modern movement, with reminiscences of corbusian urbanism, in which preference is given to cars and buildings are spread apart on the territory, with little concern to the circulation of pedestrians. The standard building type that has been built on campus since the 1970's is based on non-recyclable materials, and has a poor thermal performance. Unicamp is expected to double its number of students by the year 2030. The campus density is thus expected to grow from 600 people per hectare to almost 1,000 people per hectare. The need to construct new buildings is seen as an opportunity to correct certain characteristics of the campus that are now seen as mistakes, according to sustainability principles. This paper describes a set of proposals targeting the increase of the campus' density in a sustainable way. The plan also aims at increasing the quality of life on campus and diminishing its impact on the environment. The main targets are: - Reducing the average temperature by 2oC; - Reducing the average displacement time by 15 minutes; - Increasing the campus' density by 100%; - Reducing the CO2 emissions by 50%. // In order to achieve these goals, the following actions have been proposed: Developing a new standard building for the university, incorporating sustainability issues, such as the use of renewable and/or recyclable materials, the installation of rainwater storage tanks, the use of natural ventilation for cooling, sitting the buildings in such a way to decrease thermal gain, and other issues that are required for sustainable buildings' international certifications. To assess the performance of the new standard building, different simulation software were used, such as CFD for checking ventilation, light simulation software to assess energy consumption, and so on. 1. Filling up under-utilized urban areas in the campus with new buildings, to make better use of unused infrastructure and decrease the distance between buildings. 2. Proposing new bicycle paths in and outside campus, and proposing changes in the existing bicycle path to improve its safety. 3. Developing a landscape design plan that aims at creating shaded pedestrian and bicycle passageways.

summary The research on tectonics in the architectural field began from the middle of nineteenth century and in recent twenty years digital technology gradually developed and permeated through the field of architecture. Liu and Lim (2006, 2009) integrated classic and digital tectonic factors a present framework of new tectonics. However, the previous studies related to the tectonics in this digital age were only on architectural cases that use a great deal of digital media. The research wants to know what and how the tectonic factors affect the different spatial forms of modern architecture and focused on a case study of the diversified spatial forms, orthogonal, folding and curving. The results show the classic tectonic thinking is imperative until now. It is critical to prove the significance of adding the new digital tectonic factors in digital age.
