title Quantum architecture: an indeterministic and interactive computational design system

summary The evolution of computational design technique from mere substitution of hand drawing to customised design algorithms exhibiting a certain degree of intelligence, naturally opens up a new research frontier that studies the relationship between designers and customized design algorithms. Most of current customised architecture design algorithm adopts a deterministic paradigm to raise their design questions, that is to say, given the explicit rules and parameters, only one solution is allowed at each discrete computation step. Due to this deterministic nature, an intuitive and efficient communication between design algorithm and designer is hard to achieve, as there is almost no space for designer to step into the running generative process. This lack of progressive communication channels and the inefficiency of translating perceptual judgment into computer language directly results in the unconscious rejection of non-parameterisable design factors like intuition, aesthetic judgment and associational reasoning that are essential to any design activity. This paper introduces the quantum design paradigm as alternative computation paradigm for constructing an interactive and intuitive design system. An algorithm prototype, probability field, will be introduced to illustrate the logic and possible application of the proposed quantum design paradigm.

summary The mixture of playing videogames and producing movies has produced a new kind of moving image, a hybrid that, in the underground realm of videogames, has silently lured thousands to enter its territories. In the late 1990s, devoted players started to use videogame software for movie production. Their activity molded a narrative medium called ‘machinima’. Two recent productions are discussed to describe the various facets of this phenomenon in order to present the features that make up machinima and how it is relevant to popular culture.

title Unicamp 2030: A plan for increasing a university campus in a sustainable way and an example of integrated use of CAAD simulation and computational design strategies

summary The state university of Campinas, Unicamp, is a public university in upstate São Paulo, Brazil, ranked the second best in the country. It was founded in 1966, and its main campus started to be built in 1967, in the suburbs of Campinas, nowadays a two-million people city. The area of the campus is almost 3 million square meters (300 hectares), with a total built area of 522.000 m2 and a population of 40 thousand people - 30 thousand students, 2 thousand faculty members and almost 8 thousand staff members. The campus’ gross population density is 133 people per hectare. Less than 6% of the total campus area is presently occupied. The design of Unicamp's campus is based on concepts that were typical of the modern movement, with reminiscences of corbusian urbanism, in which preference is given to cars and buildings are spread apart on the territory, with little concern to the circulation of pedestrians. The standard building type that has been built on campus since the 1970's is based on non-recyclable materials, and has a poor thermal performance. Unicamp is expected to double its number of students by the year 2030. The campus density is thus expected to grow from 600 people per hectare to almost 1,000 people per hectare. The need to construct new buildings is seen as an opportunity to correct certain characteristics of the campus that are now seen as mistakes, according to sustainability principles. This paper describes a set of proposals targeting the increase of the campus' density in a sustainable way. The plan also aims at increasing the quality of life on campus and diminishing its impact on the environment. The main targets are: - Reducing the average temperature by 2oC; - Reducing the average displacement time by 15 minutes; - Increasing the campus' density by 100%; - Reducing the CO2 emissions by 50%. // In order to achieve these goals, the following actions have been proposed: Developing a new standard building for the university, incorporating sustainability issues, such as the use of renewable and/or recyclable materials, the installation of rainwater storage tanks, the use of natural ventilation for cooling, sitting the buildings in such a way to decrease thermal gain, and other issues that are required for sustainable buildings' international certifications. To assess the performance of the new standard building, different simulation software were used, such as CFD for checking ventilation, light simulation software to assess energy consumption, and so on. 1. Filling up under-utilized urban areas in the campus with new buildings, to make better use of unused infrastructure and decrease the distance between buildings. 2. Proposing new bicycle paths in and outside campus, and proposing changes in the existing bicycle path to improve its safety. 3. Developing a landscape design plan that aims at creating shaded pedestrian and bicycle passageways.

summary This paper is a presentation of the preliminary framework for the design and fabrication of the soft-skin. Today, the digital technology applied in the architecture field is everywhere. However, there are still lots of fantastic free form architecture uncompleted and remained on the paper architecture or only the digital visual simulated model. Until now, most of the finished free form cases are consisted of the skin and bones, or only the bones. The complete soft-skin cases without the bones are fewer and the process remains untold. Based on the parametric environments and biology, how might you design a free form without the bones? How could you make the soft skin stand up? The research starts a series of exploration of the design and fabrication for the soft skin, and seeks to propose the preliminary framework as a helpful reference for the designers who deal with the soft skin project.

summary Integral structural optimization and fabrication seeks the synthesis of two original approaches; that of topological optimization (TO) and robotic hotwire cutting (HWC) (Mcgee 2011). TO allows for the reduction of up to 70% of the volume of concrete to support a given structure (Sondergaard & Dombernowsky 2011). A strength of the method is that it allows to come up with structural designs that lie beyond the grasp of traditional means of design. A design space is a discretized volume, delimiting where the optimization will take place. The number of cells used to discretize the design space thus sets the resolution of the TO. While the approach of the application of TO as a constitutive design tool centers on structural aspects in the design phase (Xie 2010), the outcome of this process are structures that cannot be realized within a conventional budget. As such the ensuing design is optimal in a narrow sense; whilst optimal structurally though, construction can be prove to be prohibitively expensive.

Some “architectural theorists have turned to vernacular construction with the conviction that such buildings and settlements express the interconnectedness between humans and the landscapes they live in.” (Beesley and Bonnemaison 2008). Considering the present day intense building activity, such relationship of dweller and architecture seems not possible excepting a very few examples to later referred to. This paper will instead focus on the possibility of the non-architect users of architectures as decision makers in order to reach designs that meet the requirements of their addressees.

summary Protocol Growth attempts to approach the process of design in an alternative, bottom-up fashion, that is not based on master planning but instead on the development of a protocol that would allow infrastructure to ‘selforganize’, adapting at the same time to the conditions that it encounters. First, the concept of the protocol is explained and positioned in its historical context in order to better understand the needs that it satisfies. Then the characteristics of such an approach are illustrated through the example of a structure that aims to the development of a system that would allow for a settlement to face the rising of the water level because of global warming. The model proposed, instead of following a ‘long term’ plan adapts itself to the situation that it encounters and grows in height following an algorithm designed for that reason.

summary Building Information Modelling (BIM) is expected to enable efficient collaboration, improved data integrity, distributed and flexible data sharing, intelligent documentation, and high-quality outcome, through enhanced performance analysis, and expedited multi-disciplinary planning and coordination. Despite these apparent benefits, the collaboration across the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) disciplines is largely based on the exchange of 2D drawings. This paper reports the findings from a research project that aims at developing measures to enhance BIM-based collaboration in the AEC industry. Based on focus group interviews with industry participants and case studies of BIM applications, visualisation was identified as an interactive platform across the design and non-design disciplines. It is argued that visualisation can enhance the motivation for BIM-based collaboration through integration of advanced visualisation techniques such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). An AR interface for a BIM server is also presented and discussed in the paper. AR can open up potential opportunities for exploring alternatives to data representation, organisation and interaction, supporting seamless collaboration in BIM.

summary Architects—like other designers—tend to think, know and work in a visual way. In design research, this way of knowing and working is highly valued as paramount to design expertise (Cross 1982, 2006). In case of architecture, however, it is not only a particular strength, but may as well be regarded as a serious weakness. The absence of non-visual features in traditional architectural spatial representations indicates how these are disregarded as important elements in conceiving space (Dischinger 2006). This bias towards vision, and the suppression of other senses—in the way architecture is conceived, taught and critiqued—results in a disappearance of sensory qualities (Pallasmaa 2005). Nevertheless, if architects design with more attention to non visual senses, they are able to contribute to more inclusive environments. Indeed if an environment offers a range of sensory triggers, people with different sensory capacities are able to navigate and enjoy it. Rather than implementing as many sensory triggers as possible, the intention is to make buildings and spaces accessible and enjoyable for more people, in line with the objective of inclusive design (Clarkson et al. 2007), also called Design for All or Universal Design (Ostroff 2001). Within this overall objective, the aim of our study is to develop haptic design parameters that support architects during design in paying more attention to the role of haptics, i.e. the sense of touch, in the built environment by informing them about the haptic implications of their design decisions. In the context of our study, haptic design parameters are defined as variables that can be decided upon by designers throughout the design process, and the value of which determines the haptic characteristics of the resulting design. These characteristics are based on the expertise of people who are congenitally blind, as they are more attentive to non visual information, and of professional caregivers working with them. The parameters do not intend to be prescriptive, nor to impose a particular method. Instead they seek to facilitate a more inclusive design attitude by informing designers and helping them to think differently. As the insights from the empirical studies with people born blind and caregivers have been reported elsewhere (Authors 2010), this paper starts by outlining the haptic design parameters resulting from them. Following the classification of haptics into active, dynamic and passive touch, the built environment unfolds into surfaces that can act as “movement”, “guiding” and/or “rest” plane. Furthermore design techniques are suggested to check the haptic qualities during the design process. Subsequently, the paper reports on a focus group interview/workshop with professional architects to assess the usability of the haptic design parameters for design practice. The architects were then asked to try out the parameters in the context of a concrete design project. The reactions suggest that the participating architects immediately picked up the underlying idea of the parameters, and recognized their relevance in relation to the design project at stake, but that their representation confronts us with a sensory paradox: although the parameters question the impact of the visual in architectural design, they are meant to be used by designers, who are used to think, know and work in a visual way.

summary The Waiheke Gateway Pavilion, designed by Stevens Lawson Architects originally for the 2010 New Zealand Venice Biennale Pavilion, was brought to fruition for the 2017 Headland Sculpture on the Gulf Sculpture trail by students from Unitec Institute of Technology. The cross disciplinary team comprised of students from architecture and construction disciplines working in conjunction with a team of industry professionals including architects, engineers, construction managers, project managers, and lecturers to bring the designed structure, an irregular spiral shape, to completion. The structure is made up of 261 unique glulam beams, to be digitally cut using computer numerical control (CNC) process. However, due to a malfunction with the institutions in-house CNC machine, an alternative hand-cut workflow approach had to be pursued requiring integration of both digital and analogue construction methods. The digitally encoded data was extracted and transferred into shop drawings and assembly diagrams for the fabrication and construction stages of design. Accessibility to the original 3D modelling software was always needed during the construction stages to provide clarity to the copious amounts of information that was transferred into print paper form. Although this design to fabrication project was challenging, the outcome was received as a triumph amongst the architecture community.

summary Graphic designers always take both time and efforts when they are creating a decorative pattern with complicated curves and a great deal of motifs. Although there are many sourcebooks of decorative patterns, the satisfaction of the results couldn’t accomplish with designer’s requirements. Thus, graphic designers need a faster and easier system to create decorative patterns in classical style. There are a few effiencient methods to analysis curves and surfaces in the development of shape grammars. The purpose of this research is to develop Vine Grammar based on shape grammars. The vine grammar analyses principles hidden in the language of deisgn works to create the order, then generates design by using Bézier curves. This research also presents the development of a decorative pattern generative system called Shlishi by using FLASH Action Script 2.0. The grammar can be applied with computers and to verify rules quickly by Shlishi. The intention of this research is to make graphic designers to use these rules to create decorative patterns of plants in classic style and to produce satisfactory results for designer more efficiently or to make the results the source materials for the follow-up design works.

summary Digital design/fabrication is slowly emancipating architectural design from its traditional static/representational role and endowing it instead with a new, generative function. In opposition to the classical isomorphism between drawings and buildings, wherein the second stand as translations of the first, the digital design/fabrication scenario does not strictly fall within a semiotic frame as much as within a quasi biological context, reminiscent of the Aristotelian notion of entelechy. For the digital data does not represent the building as much it actively works to become the building itself. Only upon sending a given file to a machine does the building begin to materialize as an empirical reality, And eventually a habitable space as we empirically know it. And until the digital data actualizes itself, the building qua building is no more than one single, potential possibility among many others. This new universe of digital design/fabrication does not only cause buildings to be produced as quick, precise, multiply-generated objects but also reduces their presence as original entities. Like cars and fashion items, built structures will soon be manufactured as routinely-consumed items that would look original only through the subtle mechanisms of flexibility: frequent alteration of prototype design (Style 2010, Style 2015..) and “perpetual profiling” (mine, yours, hers,..). The generic will necessarily take over the circumstantial. But this truth will be veiled since “customized prototypes” will be produced or altered to individual or personal specifications. This implies that certain “myths” have to be generated to speed up consumption, to stimulate excessive use and to lock people into a continuous system which can generate consumption through a vocabulary of interchangeable, layered and repeatable functions. Samples of “next season’s buildings” will be displayed and disseminated to enforce this strategy of stimulating and channeling desire. A degree of manipulation is involved, and the consumer is flattered into believing that his or her own free assessment of and choice between the options on offer will lead him or her to select the product the advertiser is seeking to sell. From the standpoint of the architect as a maker, the rising upsurge of digital design and fabrication could leave us mourning the loss of what has been a personal stomping ground, namely the intensity of the directly lived experiences of design and building. The direct, sensuous contact with drawings, models and materials is now being lost to a (digital) realm whose attributes refer to physical reality only remotely. Unlike (analogue) drawings and buildings, digital manipulations and prototypes do not exercise themselves in a real space, and are not subjected in the most rigorous way to spatial information. They denote in this sense a loss of immediacy and a withering of corporal thought. This flexible production of space and the consequent loss of immediate experience from the part of the designer will be analyzed within a theoretical framework underpinned mainly by the works of Walter Benjamin. Samples of digitally-produced objects will be used to illustrate this argument.

summary The linking of planning and production is today of crucial importance in architectural planning processes. Though the teaching of techniques and methods of rapid prototyping in universities is not up to date, since the needed machinery is too expensive and the students’ direct and perpetual access to a sufficient number of systems cannot be granted. This paper describes a teaching project where architectural students tried to plan, build and test a 3-axes mill for themselves and their fellow students. It further describes the motivation and realization of the class and the possibility to integrate self-made and low cost milling machines in the education of architecture students.

summary In recent decades, new methodologies have emerged in architectural design that exploit the computer as a design tool. This has generated a varied set of digital skills and a new type of architectural knowledge. However, up to now, a theoretical framework is missing that would allow for a comprehensive pedagogical agenda for the teaching of digital design in architecture. The present paper offers an attempt towards such a theoretical grounding based on the concept of computable functions. This approach results in an abstract and formal perspective on digital design that enables a grouping of contemporary digital design methods and an understanding of their logical relationship. On a theoretical level, it opens a path for the study of the mechanism that facilitates the transfer of concepts from various scientific disciplines into architecture.

Advances in ubiquitous and calm computing; social and immersive media; and urban locative technologies now allow for embedding complex information into physical environments and thus open up possibilities for teachers to set up carefully tagged student engagements in the real world—in “places” where real scientific phenomena are happening and technological artifacts can be engaged with. However these models are seldom successful because they are employed without an understanding of changing paradigms of learning. In this paper, we look at several new developments in learning models and use them to develop Just in Place learning, a novel framework which harnesses embodiment, place, and the potential of new locative technologies to augment traditional practice-based learning. Just in Place learning provides new potential for teachers and students to engage with information in “place,” exploit the urban environment as the new classroom, and the built environment as a portal for situated learning.

summary The study of value and its transfer during the multi-disciplinary process of design is stable fodder for research; an entire issue of Design Studies has been devoted to Values in the Design Process. By scrutinising design meetings Dantec (2009) and Ball (2009) separately examine the mechanisms of value transfer between the agents involved in design (clients, designers, engineers). Dantec suggests this is best understood in terms of requirement, values and narrative; Ball proposes it should be viewed as a combination of "analogical reasoning" and "environmental simulation". If we look at Vitruvius and his primary architectural manual (Pollio 1960) we find values‚Äîin the form of firmitas, utilitas and venustas‚Äîembedded in this early codification of architectural practice. However, as much current research is restricted to design practice what occurs when value frameworks move between domains of cultural activity (such as design to construction and vice-versa) is not privileged with a comparably sizable body of research. This paper is concerned with the ongoing usage of pervasive media and cellular phones within communications and value transfer across the disciplinary threshold of design and construction. Through participation in a building project we analyse the subtleties of interaction between analogue communication such as sketches and digitally sponsored communication such as e-mail and mobile phone usage. Analysing the communications between the designer and builder during construction suggests it is also a creative process and the distinctions between design and construction processes are complex and often blurred. This work provides an observational basis for understanding mobile computing as a dynamic ‚Äòtuning‚Äô device‚Äîas hypothesized by Richard Coyne (2010)‚Äîthat ameliorates the brittleness of communication between different disciplines. A follow up study deploys ‚Äòdigital fieldnotes‚Äô (dfn) a bespoke iPhone application designed to test further suppositions regarding the influence exerted upon group working by mobile computing. Within collaboration individual communiqu_©s have different levels of importance depending on the specific topic of discussion and the contributing participant. This project furthers the earlier study; expanding upon what mobile computing is and enabling us to infer how these emergent devices affect collaboration. Findings from these two investigations suggest that the synchronous and asynchronous clamour of analogue and digital tools that surround design and construction are not exclusively inefficiencies or disruptions to be expunged. Observational evidence suggests they may provide contingency and continue to have value attending to the relationship between static components‚Äîand the avoidance of failure‚Äîwithin a complex system such as design and construction.

summary The purpose of this paper is to make apparent critical and theoretical aspects of the instrumentation of new technologies inside architectural processes. After twenty five years of “Choral Work” between architecture and post-structuralist philosophy superimposed together inside architectural processes, we now face a new technological era which seems to provide a new figure of authority by replacing logocentrism to mathematical logicocentrism. Everywhere, the “insemination” of computer by biogenetic algorithms and codification processes transform matter into a zoocentric paradigmatic system, which is supposed, by its internal “modulation,” to extend our potential of social dynamics into space. The goal of our demonstration will then be to examine new technical and theoretical strategies, in a way that the positivistic structure of computation can avoid a totalizing effect (that leading architecture under technological domination), but open up to an un-programmable (emergent) future far above “weaving” and calculated design.

summary This paper reports the initial development of a constructive system based on interlocked boards manufactured through digital fabrication. The system is based on the elaboration of grooves in regular pieces by a laser - cutter or CNC - machines to develop self - supported configurations. A parametric design system has been designed and several material models and full - scale prototypes have been built. Although the system requires evaluation of its structural features, production and maintenance, it offers novel building alternatives. This experience set up an innovative way of performing experimental research to develop new products and possible designs.
