This software package allows users to learn freely, at their own pace or location at any time, in a sequence of instruction units. In order to improve students’ autonomy in acquiring learning skills, a new, interdisciplinary, culture seems to push the curriculum beyond conventional techniques.

summary The growing demand for sustainable architectural design motivates the integration of BIM technologies and novel design processes into architectural education. This paper presents the results from a set of educational case studies for the incorporation of BIM-based daylighting simulations and analyses into the design studio. With a carefully devised studio setting and the participation of interdisciplinary consultants, the experimental case studies simulated an integrated design process based on rapid information exchange and collaborative decision making. The implemented method enables students to use BIM models and daylighting simulations as significant sources of design information for performance-based architectural design.

summary The aim of this collaborative 3D printing workshop is to define the production specifications, the teaching-learning pedagogical strategy aspects to help architecture students acquire: the basic competences of building representation, the pre and post processing of printing procedures (printing materials, paint, epoxy, accessories, etc...), defining the missing functions in BIM and Architectural Modelling software and determining the benefits of enhancing them for better 3D prototyping productivity. Two teams (A and B) adopted specific working scenarios based on real world printing jobs. Team A worked on an in-house scenario and Team B on an outsourcing scenario. Tasks successfully completed showed: the wide range of prototypes that could be produced in an architectural studio and the need for a collaborative network to organize the knowledge and good practices developed by research teams (professional or academic) involved in developing rapid prototyping for architecture. This knowledge network could be a discussion forum and a development partnership of 3D printing manufacturers and CAD/BIM software developers.

summary Spurring new and innovative building design will be critical to the urban energy and economic future of the nation. The operation of completed buildings account for 48% of the nation’s annual greenhouse gas emissions, and 76% of all electricity generated by U.S. power plants goes to supply the building sector. Therefore developing and applying new and innovative sustainable building design will have a measurable impact on the environment. Recent studies show sustainable building design is closely linked to system integration, where various components of a building work in confluence to produce synergetic benefits. As a result, a critical component of sustainable design involves a clear understanding of building systems operation, interaction, and the selection parameters. A consideration of suitable building systems, gauging their interaction, and proposing well integrated systems can lead to producing efficient models of sustainable buildings with minimal impact on the environment. The following paper outlines the progress on a project entitled “Building Literacy: the Integration of Building Technology and Design in Architectural Education.” The project develops a digital tool for teaching/learning architectural technology from an integrated systems perspective. The project attempts to immerse students in a simulated environment that is based on the real life practice of architecture. The project accomplishes this by harnessing the capabilities of simulation and dynamic modeling programs, as well as the state of art graphic media, to create compelling and rewarding reasons for students’ engagement in the lear ning process. The project involves a multidisciplinary team of faculty from Florida International University, University at Buffalo the State University of New York, and Iowa State University and is funded by the US Department of Education for the period of 2007-2011.

summary While the studio is widely accepted as the learning environment where architecture students most effectively learn how to design (Mahgoub, 2007:195), there are surprisingly few studies that attempt to identify in a qualitative way the interrelated factors that contribute to and support design studio learning (Bose, 2007:131). Such a situation seems problematic given the changes and challenges facing education including design education. Overall, there is growing support for re-examining (perhaps redefining) the design studio particularly in response to the impact of new technologies but as this paper argues this should not occur independently of the other elements and qualities comprising the design studio. In this respect, this paper describes a framework developed for a doctoral project concerned with capturing and more holistically understanding the complexity and potential of the design studio to operate within an increasingly and largely unpredictable global context. Integral to this is a comparative analysis of selected cases underpinned by grounded theory methodology of the traditional design studio and the virtual design studio informed by emerging pedagogical theory and the experiences of those most intimately involved – students and lecturers. In addition to providing a conceptual model for future research, the framework is of value to educators currently interested in developing as well as evaluating learning environments for design.

summary Contemporary architecture can be seen as a dynamic system that causes change to its environment, or even as system that can modify itself. Interactive or responsive environments are not totally new to architecture however the possibilities in architecture have only been lightly referred to. This interdisciplinary design studio, with mechatronics engineers and architects collaborating, explored possible applications with real world equipment, sensors and knowledge. Development of responsive architecture requires architects to have a fluency in sensors, actuators and their control system programming. New potential application of technologies requires a re-framing of what that technology could do in a different social application. Together these issues challenged architecture and engineering students in a collaborative design environment. The resulting projects – kinetic architecture on control systems – challenge our understanding of what our built environment could be.

summary The future of urban infrastructure is no doubt a future of control systems. An architecture that engages infrastructure can engage control systems to not only improve efficiency and mediate contested urban space but also to modifying spaces for different uses, buffer environmental factors and respond to occupation or use. The use of mechatronics in architecture requires interdisciplinary collaboration and an understanding of control systems, sensors and actuators. Through a theoretical project, research and a design studio, this paper discusses the future of mechatronics in architecture and shows the huge potential for reimagining our infrastructure. The application to the infrastructural realm pushes the design out of the scope of conventional architecture both in the use of mechatronics and its application to the larger realm of the city.

summary Data is ubiquitous in our cities. However, designing a knowledge network about our cities is an arduous task, given that data sensed cannot be used directly, human significance must be added. Adding human significance can be achieved via an automated “expert system (ES)” in which domain expert knowledge are stored in a knowledge-based repository. The domain expert knowledge is matched with the corresponding data to derive specific inference which can aid decision making for urban stakeholders.This requires amalgamation of various interdisciplinary techniques. This paper presents a survey of existing technologies in order to investigate the emerging issues surrounding the design of a live knowledge network for sustainable urban living. The maps and models of the existing infrastructure of our cities that include a wealth of information such as topography, layout, zoning, land use, transportation networks, public facilities, and resource network grids need to be integrated with real-time spatiotemporal information about the city. Public data in forms of archives and data streams as well as online data from the social network and the Web can be analyzed using data mining techniques. The domain experts need to interpret the results of data mining into knowledge that will augment the existing knowledge base and models of our cities. In addition to the analysis of archived and streamed data sources from the built environment, the emerging state-of-the-art Web 2.0 and mobile technologies are presented as the potential techniques to crowddesign a live urban knowledge network. Data modeling, data mining, crowdsourcing, and social intervention techniques are reviewed in this paper with examples from the related work and our own experiments.

summary In recent years a number of projects have been emerged, in which the new possibilities of the computer as a design tool, have been used. Through the digital chain from design to manufacturing the efficiency has increased and allows the implementation of complex architectural structures. With all these new opportunities, also new challenges arise in the teaching and the educational concepts. The paper describes the detailed course concept and the didactic strategy using the example of a parametric designed roof structure, we designed, planed and build up in scale 1:1 within the main course. „Wendepunkt|e im Bauen“ (Turning point|s of building) is the name of an exhibition at the “Pinakothek der Moderne” in Spring 2010. In addition to contributions of the industrialization in the building industry from 1850 to the present day, the exhibition also serves as a platform, to demonstrate new possibilities of computer-aided parametric design and the closely related computer aided manufacturing (CAM). In this context, we took the chance to build a sculpture in Scale 1:1 to show the potential of a constant digital workflow and the digital fabrication. Through the digital chain from design to manufacturing, the efficiency has been increased by the computer and allows the implementation of new complex architectural structures. But the efficiency of the high-degree-automation through the use of computerized machines usually ends in the production of the components. Because this coincidence of the elements in the assembly often proves cost and time, the aim of the project was to optimize both, the production of components and their assembly as well. As part of the wintercourse 2009/2010 different aspects of automation have been reviewed and new solutions have been analyzed. Together with 15 students of the Faculty of Architecture the complete digital chain started with the first design ideas, about parametric programming through production and assembly had been researched, implemented and brought to reality. In the first steps, the students had to learn about the potential, but also about the problems coming with the digital-design and the attached digital-production. There for the course took part at our computerlab. In weekly workshops, all ideas have been implemented and tested directly in the 3-dimensional parametric model. And thanks to the interdisciplinary work with the Department of Structural Design also static factors had been considered, to optimize the form. Parallel to the digital form-finding process, the first prototypes have been produced by the students. By using the chairs 3D-CNC-Mills we were able to check the programmed connection detail in reality and apply the so learned lessons to the further development. After nearly 3 month of research, designing, planning and programming, we were able to produce the over 1000 different parts in only 4 days. By developing a special pre-stressed structure and connection detail it was also possible, to assemble the whole structure (13.5m x 4.5m x 4m) in only one day. The close connection between digital design (CAD) and digital manufacturing (CAM) is an important point of our doctrine. By the fact, that the students operate the machines themselves, but also implement projects on a scale of 1:1, they learn to independently evaluate these new tools and to use them in a meaningful way.

summary This paper explores design processes requiring the invention and implementation of customized workflows for the optimization of design information exchange. Standard workflows in design software are typically dependent upon the use of proprietary file formats to communicate design intent across the design team. Software platforms promote “one-stop-shop” proprietary approaches to BIM where all team members and consultants ideally operate within a single model environment and store information within a single file format. While the ‘single model’ approach can be effective under some circumstances, this approach is often found to be limiting when the design process calls for the integration of other design toolsets and delivery processes. This is especially true for large complex projects where multiple participants with different software requirements need to collaborate on the same design. In these cases, various non-standard ways of working are often implemented, resulting in a new means of communicating design and building information across a team. This paper will outline the impact customized workflows have on the design process at NBBJ and evaluate their potential for leading to more innovative design and integrated teams. The first study will explore and evaluate the communication and collaborative process that took place in the design development and construction documentation stages of the Hangzhou Stadium. The second study will be an overview of ongoing investigation and experimentation into customized workflows for team and data integration.

summary In order to directly make insightful which implications follow from structural design changes and to be able to adapt a structural design quickly to geometrical design changes made by the architect, the structural engineer may embed a parametric and associative design approach in the structural design process. This approach focuses on parametric modelling and the development of parametric tools which serve specific needs in the structural design process, allowing designers for instance to quickly communicate and discuss alternatives or to inform design team members of structural results of changing design parameters. The paper presents multiple projects within these categories of parametric approaches. They are concentrated on design and analysis with the goal of presenting practical examples of these approaches in structural design which were integrated in the full design process in order to benefit from the qualities of a multi-disciplinary parametric and associative design process.

summary Due to the complexity of parametric modeling, it has been the task of only a handful of experts in the design team to develop, build and modify parametric models. The complexity of parametric models increases exponentially with the number of design aspects it incorporates. The ambiguity of parametric models towards the modeled design intent explains that modifying the model is often isolated as an individual exercise. Developments in physical and ubiquitous computing, however, allow for collaboration and interaction with parametric models in other ways. Communication, coordination, and interaction between parametric models and the physical and social environment are the context of this paper. The paper describes some of the projects that were outcomes of the SmartGeometry 2010 workshops. These projects are dealing with mass collaboration using Twitter, tangible interfaces, parametric design and construction coordination and geometrical interpretation of datasets.

summary In architecture schools, where the ‘studio culture’ lies at the heart of students’ learning, taught courses, particularly technology ones, are often seen as secondary or supplementary units. Successful delivery of such courses, where students can act effectively, be motivated and engaged, is a rather demanding task requiring careful planning and the use of various teaching styles. A recent challenge that faces architecture education today, and subsequently influences the way technology courses are being designed, is the growing trend in practice towards environmentally responsive design and the need for graduates with new skills in sustainable construction and urban ecology (HEFCE’s consultation document, 2005). This article presents the role of innovative simulation modelling tools in the enhancement of the student learning experience and professional development. Reference is made to a teaching practice that has recently been applied at Portsmouth School of Architecture in the United Kingdom and piloted at Deakin University in Australia. The work focuses on the structure and delivery of one of the two main technology units in the second year architecture programme that underwent two main phases of revision during the academic years 2009/10 and 2010/11. The article examines the inclusion of advanced daylight simulation modelling tools in the unit programme, and measures the effectiveness of enhancing its delivery as a key component of the curriculum on the student learning experience. A main objective of the work was to explain whether or not the introduction of a simulation modelling component, and the later improvement of its integration with the course programme and assessment, has contributed to a better learning experience and level of engagement. Student feedback and the grade distribution pattern over the last three academic years were collected and analyzed. The analysis of student feedback on the revised modelling component showed a positive influence on the learning experience and level of satisfaction and engagement. An improvement in student performance was also recorded over the last two academic years and following the implementation of new assessment design.

summary The research presented in this paper investigates ways of providing better design applications for technologies in the field of Urban Digital Media (UDM). The work takes an emergent approach, evolving a design strategy through the early engagement of stakeholders. The paper discusses research in a design-led creative intersection between media technology, culture and the arts in the built environment. The case study discusses opportunities for the enhancement of a university campus experience, learning culture and community, through the provision of an integrated digital presence within campus architecture and urban spaces. It considers types of information architecture (Manovich, 2001) and designs for use in urban settings to create communication-rich, advanced and interactive designed spaces (Haeusler, 2009). The presented research investigates how to create a strategy for display technologies and networked communications to transform and augment the constructed reality of the built environment, allowing new formats of media activity.

summary This paper details an initial exploration into the development of a breathing building skin. This research proposes a system of diaphragms as an alternative to the use of fans for distributing volumes of air. The driving concepts for this project are the three types of evolutionary adaptation: flexibility, acclimation, and learning. Of particular interest is how these biological concepts relate to architectural design. Parametric modeling was used throughout the project to study a family of folding geometry. This allowed for the iterative development of a complex part that is capable of being manufactured from a single sheet of material. Preliminary calculations point to this system being several times more energy efficient than a fan at moving a given volume of air per Watt of electricity. This research is significant as it puts forth a potentially energy efficient and highly integrated alternative to fans, while also illustrating a way of relating biological concepts of adaptation to architectural design.

summary Software used by architectural and industrial designers has shifted from becoming a tool for drafting, towards use in verification, simulation, project management and remote project sharing. In more advanced models, design parameters for the designed object can be adjusted so that a family of variations can be produced rapidly. With the advances in computer aided design (CAD) technology, design options can now be generated and analyzed in real time. However the use of digital tools to support design as an activity is still at an early stage and has largely been limited in functionality with regard to the design process. To date, major CAD vendors have not developed an integrated tool that is able to leverage specialised design knowledge from various discipline domains (known as expert knowledge systems) as well as to support the creation of design alternatives that satisfy different forms of constraints. We propose that evolutionary computing and machine learning be linked with parametric design techniques in order to monitor a designer’s cognition and intent based on their design history. This will lead to results that impact future work on design support systems which are capable of supporting implicit constraint and problem definition for wicked problems that are difficult to quantify.

summary This proposal seeks to stimulate energy conceptualization in the early stages of architectural design through the visualization of energy conditions as a dialogue in initial design configurations that is based on the integration of two software tools to facilitate meaningful learning. Students today have analytical intelligence that they have acquired through teaching themselves, and this has developed their creativity and their experiential - contextual practice; this permits effective interpretation of symbolic cognition. Digital tools of building, information modeling, and energy analysis can be related to specific features that promote this integrated design learning.

summary The Deakin Studies Online (DSO) Learning Management System (LMS) forms the fundamental basis for tertiary education at Deakin University. This LMS is founded on Web 1.0 principles, however significant potential exists for engagement in Web 2.0 technologies to support learning and teaching in the design studio. A digitally enhanced design curriculum is discussed starting with html-based reflective folios in 2001, the use of blogs for reflection and resource creation and culminating in a Web 2.0 design studio based on social networking.
