title Interweaving Grammar: Reconfiguring Vernacular Structure Through Parametric Shape Grammar
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 8 - no. 2, 93-110
summary This paper re-examines the interweaving method to demonstrate how architectural computation can reinterpret the advantages of this traditional crafting techniques for its geometrical compatibility and rule generativity. Firstly, the technique analyzes and reconfigures load distribution of a traditional interwoven surface to mimic its structural principle. Secondly, from this structural reconfiguration, the study applies parametric shape grammar to define interweaving rules. The rules generate various patterns with rigid local materials that fit the size of human hand. The experiment in this study shows that interweaving grammar can generate ornamental-structural components with three different load distributions, three different segmented materials and in three different spatial dimensions (point, line and plane).

title Assessing innovation in hybrid designs using shape grammars
source Proceedings of the 16th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia / The University of Newcastle, Australia 27-29 April 2011, pp. 545-554
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2011.545
summary Al-kazzaz et al (2010) described hybrid adaption technique to generate innovative designs from heterogeneous precedents using shape grammars. An evaluation of the degree of innovation in the hybrid designs gave feedback to grammar users before and after applying a rule. Innovation was assessed using variables derived from the internal structure of the grammar such as: the number of antecedents in the corpus having the same rule; the number of rules in a subclass rule set having the same geometry; etc. However, the validity of the innovation assessment was unclear and the use of the feedback measures was not demonstrated. Accordingly, this study aims to verify the credibility of the innovation measures and to identify the independent variables that a user can control to achieve a significant impact on each innovation measure as a dependent variable.

title Integrated Design and Building System for the Provision of Customized Housing: the Case of Post-Earthquake Haiti
source Computer Aided Architectural Design Futures 2011 [Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Futures / ISBN 9782874561429] Liege (Belgium) 4-8 July 2011, pp. 247-264.
summary The paper proposes integrated design and building systems for the provision of sustainable customized housing. It advances previous work by applying a methodology to generate these systems from vernacular precedents. The methodology is based on the use of shape grammars to derive and encode a contemporary system from the precedents. The combined set of rules can be applied to generate housing solutions tailored to specific user and site contexts. The provision of housing to shelter the population affected by the 2010 Haiti earthquake illustrates the application of the methodology. A computer implementation is currently under development in C# using the BIM platform provided by Revit. The world experiences a sharp increase in population and a strong urbanization process. These phenomena call for the development of effective means to solve the resulting housing deficit. The response of the informal sector to the problem, which relies mainly on handcrafted processes, has resulted in an increase of urban slums in many of the big cities, which lack sanitary and spatial conditions. The formal sector has produced monotonous environments based on the idea of mass production that one size fits all, which fails to meet individual and cultural needs. We propose an alternative approach in which mass customization is used to produce planed environments that possess qualities found in historical settlements. Mass customization, a new paradigm emerging due to the technological developments of the last decades, combines the economy of scale of mass production and the aesthetics and functional qualities of customization. Mass customization of housing is defined as the provision of houses that respond to the context in which they are built. The conceptual model for the mass customization of housing used departs from the idea of a housing type, which is the combined result of three systems (Habraken, 1988) -- spatial, building system, and stylistic -- and it includes a design system, a production system, and a computer system (Duarte, 2001). In previous work, this conceptual model was tested by developing a computer system for existing design and building systems (Benr__s and Duarte, 2009). The current work advances it by developing new and original design, building, and computer systems for a particular context. The urgent need to build fast in the aftermath of catastrophes quite often overrides any cultural concerns. As a result, the shelters provided in such circumstances are indistinct and impersonal. However, taking individual and cultural aspects into account might lead to a better identification of the population with their new environment, thereby minimizing the rupture caused in their lives. As the methodology to develop new housing systems is based on the idea of architectural precedents, choosing existing vernacular housing as a precedent permits the incorporation of cultural aspects and facilitates an identification of people with the new housing. In the Haiti case study, we chose as a precedent a housetype called ‚Äúgingerbread houses‚Äů, which includes a wide range of houses from wealthy to very humble ones. Although the proposed design system was inspired by these houses, it was decided to adopt a contemporary take. The methodology to devise the new type was based on two ideas: precedents and transformations in design. In architecture, the use of precedents provides designers with typical solutions for particular problems and it constitutes a departing point for a new design. In our case, the precedent is an existing housetype. It has been shown (Duarte, 2001) that a particular housetype can be encoded by a shape grammar (Stiny, 1980) forming a design system. Studies in shape grammars have shown that the evolution of one style into another can be described as the transformation of one shape grammar into another (Knight, 1994). The used methodology departs takes off from these ideas and it comprises the following steps (Duarte, 2008): (1) Selection of precedents, (2) Derivation of an archetype; (3) Listing of rules; (4) Derivation of designs; (5) Cataloguing of solutions; (6) Derivation of tailored solution.

summary This paper develops a formal approach to investigate the evolution of a Korean traditional pattern, Bosangwhamun. The approach employs the structure of symbolic memes embedded in the pattern as a framework of hierarchical decomposition of a pattern to describe an evolutionary development process of a given pattern with a set of rules in shape grammar as style changes. Further, the formal descriptions of the given pattern become the basis for generating its variations. With this process, the validity of the rules and their appropriateness in the representation of Bosangwhamun are examined.

summary This paper suggests that Portuguese historical cities were based on a structured knowledge-based process from where it’s possible to retrieve not only a generative parametric urban grammar but also to construct a computational model capable to generate Portuguese planimetric proportionate and symmetrical urban grammar. The grammar is described graphically and discursively, followed by the introduction of a 2D shape grammars interpreter UrbanGENE. The 2D shape grammar interpreter will allow the user to interact with the genetic and generative principles of Portuguese historical urban design from 16th to 18th century and additionally be deployed in urban history teaching and learning.

summary The parametric design techniques are developed over the past 15 years. And a new style called parametricism is born, which is the style rooted in digital animation techniques. The parametricism is based on the advanced parametric design systems and scripting method (Schumacher, 2009). This study is the research of defining the city of Istanbul and the skyscraper together in the sense of the parametricism. The result is expected to be a self-sufficient urban living proposal by using generative and parametric tools and scripting techniques. The other purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the skyscraper and the natural world, and the urban living.

title Singapore National Stadium Roof
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 8 - no. 3, pp. 257-278
summary The case study focuses on design of the Singapore National Stadium roof and its architectural and structural constraints. The dialog between performance form generation and aesthetics was challenged through several design iterations and is critically reviewed in this paper. The collaboration of engineers and architects gave a form to this significant building that was slightly changed several times due to various conditions. The complex shape of the dome structure was resolved in one parametric model that could react on aesthetical and structural requirements. The landmark roof structure generated in computer had to be evaluated by designers and presented to decision making bodies.

title Parametric Design of the Vela Roof
source CAAD - Cities - Sustainability [5th International Conference Proceedings of the Arab Society for Computer Aided Architectural Design (ASCAAD 2010 / ISBN 978-1-907349-02-7], Fez (Morocco), 19-21 October 2010, pp. 231-240
summary Due to the increased request for representative structures and for spaces to be used independent of the weather conditions, contemporary cities increasingly integrate public covered spaces (shadowed squares and streets, courtyards, historic commercial galleries, etc.) in the urban fibre. Facing the design of large roof structures for semi outdoor spaces is increasingly common for architects and engineers. When focusing on large roofs, aesthetics, structural performance and economics often dominate the design process. However, the current increased emphasis on energy-related aspects generates new challenges. Particularly, the use of renewable energy resources needs to be confronted. In this paper we will address the subject through a case study whose design aimed at integrating performance evaluations in the very early stages of the process. The case study focuses on the so-called “Vela roof”. This roof is part of a larger project currently under construction in Bologna (Italy). The focus of the study concerns the use of on-site renewable climate (energy) resources with special attention given passive reduction of summer overheating and daylight. For these tasks a parametric model was developed to support the decision making process and the paper will present its potential with respect to performance-oriented design during the conceptual design phase of roof structure. The very first conceptual design developed by the architectural office was assumed as a starting point for the inclusion of performance criteria. In the preliminary design of the roof uncomfortable conditions were expected under the whole roof in the summer. Various strategies for improving the thermal comfort were investigated, involving a large set of combined systems. Not all of these will be detailed in this paper. Instead we will focus on the ones directly affected by the geometry of the roof. Those are mainly air flow for cooling and the reduction of solar gain, in combination with their effects on daylight. Their investigation was based on a chain of dependencies to be integrated in the design process. With respect to that, parametric modelling was used. Parametric modelling allows both geometrical entities and their relationships to be represented. These relationships are structured in a hierarchical chain of dependencies, established during the preliminary parameterization process. The independent properties of the model are usually expressed through independent parameters, and their variations generate different configurations of the model. By making use of this potential, three project scales were parametrically explored. At the large scale, parametric variations of the overall shape of the roof were investigated in relation to cooling through ventilation and here the parametric model allowed for the generation of both different configurations of the roof, including its structural morphology and variations of its structural tessellation. At the medium scale, the integration of openable modules was investigated in relation to air extraction for cooling; with respect to this, the parametric model allows exploring openings based on variations of size and distribution. At the small scale, various options were explored for the cladding system, in order to reduce the direct solar gain while still allowing the income of indirect natural light. The parametric model was used to investigate the configuration of self-shading modules and their integration in the structure. Specific emphasis will be given to the small scale. The advantages in design process and the current limits of the parametric modelling approach used here will be discussed in the paper.

summary This paper describes a new methodology of deriving innovative hybrid designs using shape grammars of heterogeneous designs. The method is detailed within three phases of shape grammars: analysis, synthesis and evaluation. In the analysis phase, the research suggests that original rules of each design component are grouped in subclass rule sets to facilitate rule choices. Additionally, adding new hybrid rules to original rules expands the options available to the grammar user. In the synthesis phase, the research adopts state labels and markers to drive the design generation. The former is implemented with a user guide grammar to ensure hybridity in the generated design, while the latter aims to ensure feasible designs. Lastly evaluation criteria are added to measure the degree of innovation of the hybrid designs. This paper describes the derivation of hybrid minaret designs from a corpus of heterogeneous traditional minaret designs.

summary This paper shows the first results of a prototype implementation of a generative urban design tool. This implementation will form part of a design support tool for a GIS based platform defined to formulate, generate and evaluate urban designs. These three goals, formulation, generation and evaluation are integrated by connecting three modules developed individually for each goal. In this paper we focus on the implementation of the generation module showing a prototype developed on the Integrated Development Environment (IDE) of AutoCAD Civil 3D. This implementation attempts to encode the design moves of the urban planner into design patterns supported on grammar formalisms which allow for design synthesis and design exploration in the field of urban design.

summary Nowadays, a large set of involved planning parties are heavily demanded with the definition of holistic in kind requirement specifications for urban planning sites – so called future cities. However, the resulting amountof specifications for a specific building project poses a great challenge to designers and planners especially when it comes to include this information into their design proposals for a sustainable urban development. These design performance criteria are traditionally expressed in textual and numerical planning guidelines and which are making it difficult to establish a comprehensive and holistic view onto the domain itself. Therefore we present in this paper a design guide visualization method to overcome this situation for the evaluation of design specification and urban layouts in a qualitative and quantitative manner.

summary Graphic designers always take both time and efforts when they are creating a decorative pattern with complicated curves and a great deal of motifs. Although there are many sourcebooks of decorative patterns, the satisfaction of the results couldn’t accomplish with designer’s requirements. Thus, graphic designers need a faster and easier system to create decorative patterns in classical style. There are a few effiencient methods to analysis curves and surfaces in the development of shape grammars. The purpose of this research is to develop Vine Grammar based on shape grammars. The vine grammar analyses principles hidden in the language of deisgn works to create the order, then generates design by using Bézier curves. This research also presents the development of a decorative pattern generative system called Shlishi by using FLASH Action Script 2.0. The grammar can be applied with computers and to verify rules quickly by Shlishi. The intention of this research is to make graphic designers to use these rules to create decorative patterns of plants in classic style and to produce satisfactory results for designer more efficiently or to make the results the source materials for the follow-up design works.

The workshop is the first of three planned to take place during the course of the first year studio. It aims at introducing new ways of thinking as well as introducing students to the new pattern of architectural education; It also helps communicating and-if required- unlearning accumulative conceptions that were unconsciously gained by the lack of practice, ignorance of actuality or simply by the accumulation of images and ideas in their minds over the years. A grammatical approach was chosen to develop the described methodology, based on the shape grammars system in general, and on one of its basic skills of seeing/understanding shapes & extracting elements of the visual composition in particular

summary Cities all over the world are challenged by increasing the quality of life of urban citizens in order to ensure sustainable urban development. However, a lot of policies and planning fail in integrating environmental aspects in a way that makes them applicable for design leading to rather unsustainable developments. This paper presents an approach to integrate ecological parameters into urban design using a procedural, shape grammar driven modeling and visualization system. Design specifications and ecological goals given in the Masterplan of MASDAR City derived as an application example for the workflow. We used the concept of ecosystem services to break down the ecological process knowledge to design rules and meaningful, quantifiable spatial indicators. Our results demonstrate the application of the proposed approach covering different planning scales (district and building level). The integrated model suits as an assessment tool that can be used to test urban design alternatives on the ecological functioning as a starting point for architects.

summary Digital fabrication and parametric tools require not only digital dexterity but a robust material sensibility that precedes digital mediation. Developed through Gaston Bachelard’s concept of the graft, the material imagination acts as a reciprocal creative intelligence to today’s dominant formal imagination enabled through the fluid geometric precision in digital tools. This paper presents a series of “materials first” pedagogical approaches through which material constraints become operative design criteria in the development of digital skills. This intersection between analog and digital systems develops a parametric sensibility that is demonstrated through physical prototypes and full-scale installations. This approach is implicitly a critique of the disregard of material logic in many parametric approaches in particular, and digital design culture in general. Conversely, the development of a parametric sensibility through analog means enables the development of material primitives from which parametric tools can expand the material imagination while giving structure to it.

title Diagrams as parametric systems in urban design: parametric systems applied to conceptual design
source Proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia / Hong Kong 7-10 April 2010, pp. 337-346
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2010.337
summary The paper describes how parametric systems have been used to help students bridge from conceptual design to descriptive results. Specifically, it describes projects set in two cities, Hong Kong and Melbourne, to address substantive urban design issues and illustrate that the approach is not scale or culturally bounded. The project undertaken in Hong Kong establishes interdependency models for dense urban structure and examined urban systems that contribute positively to their contextual setting. Parametric models were used to develop diagrams of site potential through models of air movement, light and sun exposure, in particular addressing air quality in one of the most polluted places in Hong Kong. The Melbourne case studies examine urban systems as self-organising systems.
