summary In recent decades, there has been an extraordinary advance in the development of parametric design tools, in which the parameters of a particular object are defined, but not the objects’ shape. These technologies have been transferred from design industries to architecture and urbanism to constitute what is known as parametric urbanism, a new trend of urban design development exemplified in the work of Zaha Hadid, whose large scale urban design proposals have frequently applied parametric design tools. This paper analyses the emergence of this new urban theory in order to identify its limits and to introduce future improvements.

summary In this article we discuss the use of photographic panoramas in the capture of urban space and architecture. The picture is a dynamic and interactive model, which has been used as a tool that assists the apprehension of space, due to its high level of realism. When associated with the virtual tour, this tool is potentialized due to the amount of information that can be added to the application. To illustrate this analysis, two examples were offered at different scales: one aimed at the capture of urban spaces and the second aimed at architectural spaces. In doing so it was possible to compare results and discuss the potential of the tool.

summary This project suggests a specific study of design using domotics, including its skins and limits, and its equipment. We recognize the capacity of domotics to optimize the functions of diverse architectural typologies by systematizing already - existing technologies. We present an example of design that contemplates the inclusion of domotics in transportable typologies using innovative materials to explore the designs and proposals of haptic technology; this increases the number of traditional interfaces so users—including children and individuals with different disabilities—can increasingly interact with architecture and technology.

summary We present this paper as a proposal for a preliminary design prototype for urban architecture based on the concept of versatility, that is, spaces that can be easily changed, either on the effects level (i.e. illumination, projection), or on the mechanical level (i.e. skin movement). These spaces can be transformed by changing their proportions, limits and assistance. This versatility is provided by domotics, and is verified in 3D graphics and animations. The proposal uses a domotic system as the central control for illumination, environment outfitting, skin movements, security systems, and multimedia.

summary Reconstruction work on more than twenty synagogues in Vienna has been ongoing for more than a decade. The fact that these sacred buildings no longer exist is a pivotal aspect in this undertaking. Research revealed archived material, however, which served as reliable basis for the reconstruction work. The paper focuses on the possibilities and limits of this exploration and discusses the long-term options for handling 3D models and the dissemination of results to a large audience. The appropriate illustration of spatial contexts is another aspect that has been explored. The publication of results in the form of a city guide is in line with the objective of conveying the reconstruction results to a large audience.

summary This paper presents an experience about BIM curriculum from Faculty of Architecture, Rangsit University, which has been implemented since 2010. Our approach is to introduce BIM into the first year architectural design curriculum both as a tool and as a new way to practice design. The objective of this paper is to identify problems encountered from the class and typical misconceptions about BIM curriculum based on our experience. Problems encountered are 1) The need to boost students’ attention, 2) The lack of acceptability criteria of the students’ design flaws, 3) The lack of BIM Guideline to be used in the curriculum, and 4) The need to grow the BIM thinking in other advanced studios. Typical misconceptions identified are 1) BIM is just another design tool 2) Traditional design process can be used in a BIM design studio, and 3) BIM limits creativity. Finally, we propose how to improve the curriculum and compare the BIM design process to traditional design process.

summary The instrumental and aesthetic implications of architecture’s engagement with science and technology has a long history, part of which includes the period following the Second World War when the rapid technological advances of the Industrial Revolution merged with a general cultural mindset characterized by themes of progress and futurism. For postwar thinkers like Reyner Banham, this interest in a futurist architecture suggested an approach to design rooted less in architectural precedent than technological extrapolation. While a precedent based approach might be viewed as more disciplinary in nature, technological extrapolation suggests an inclination towards interdisciplinarity. Thus, Banham’s concept of extrapolation encouraged architects to look beyond the limits of their own discipline as a means of discovering new forms of knowledge and expertise. Indeed Banham was engaged in taking stock of the technological advances particular to his time while simultaneously anticipating the implication of these advancements for the future. To this extent, the postwar period and its inherent futurism provides a useful and poignant lens through which to take stock of our own technological climate. Given the equally revolutionary advances in computer technology in the last twenty years, our contemporary moment can be seen as having many parallels with the postwar period, and not unlike the postwar generation of architects and thinkers, contemporary designers are inevitably faced with the challenge of engaging new technological advances and their implications for architecture. In our current age of digital and biological technologies, these advances are both rapid and widespread, and include LED and fiber-optic lighting systems, motion sensing, interface design, solar tracking photovoltaic skins and wind harnessing technologies, magnetic levitation, and robotics. This paper begins with an examination of design work and criticism from the postwar period and proceeds to utilize that examination as an historical framework for addressing issues of contemporary design and 21st Century technological advancement.

summary Future Cities – the title of the 2010 eCAADe Conference describes one of the major challenges of the 21st century. The conference theme is a logical evolution from previous years in that it expands the focus of interest from the building to larger scales and higher complexity. The conference contributions describe methods and instruments that were developed in the last three decades and apply them to city and territorial planning. The eCAADe proceedings demonstrate that CAAD research and education of the past prepared the ground for the future and for the increased responsibility of the CAAD community. The population of cities has developed worldwide from a minority to the majority. Cities are the largest, most complex and most dynamic man-made systems. As vibrant centres of cultural life and of mega events, they are engines that drive local and global economies. However, their growth was in the fewest cases determined by sustainability goals. As a result, contemporary metropolitan territories are often environmentally, socially and economically unsustainable entities placing increasing pressure on the surrounding rural areas. No longer do traditional methods support the planning and managing of large cities – these methods have reached their limits. Parallel to the revolution in the design of buildings, we need a radical re-thinking of the planning, design, development and management process of cities and urban-rural systems. Compared to buildings, urban and rural systems involve a much higher number of stakeholders and decision makers. We need to study and simulate the effects and side effects of urban-rural planning or re-development much earlier in the process than normally done today. The goal seems clear: the transformation of existing and the planning of new sustainable urban-rural systems. As ordering principles we can build on experiences with building architecture. Complexity, dynamics, scale, and the urban metabolism evolve as promising research and education areas.

summary How do design tools feedback material behaviour to the designer? Digital design tools in use by designers today provide a rich environment for design of form but offer little feedback of the material that ultimately realise that form. This lack of materialism limits the value of the design tool and the exploration of the design space where material behaviour can provide important feedback. This work examines the modes and value of material feedback in design using systems engineering principles, illustrates the challenge with current tools and explores a prototype simulative interface. It approaches the problem from a new perspective of simulating physical manipulation and experiment rather than existing CAD paradigms.

summary Due to the increased request for representative structures and for spaces to be used independent of the weather conditions, contemporary cities increasingly integrate public covered spaces (shadowed squares and streets, courtyards, historic commercial galleries, etc.) in the urban fibre. Facing the design of large roof structures for semi outdoor spaces is increasingly common for architects and engineers. When focusing on large roofs, aesthetics, structural performance and economics often dominate the design process. However, the current increased emphasis on energy-related aspects generates new challenges. Particularly, the use of renewable energy resources needs to be confronted. In this paper we will address the subject through a case study whose design aimed at integrating performance evaluations in the very early stages of the process. The case study focuses on the so-called “Vela roof”. This roof is part of a larger project currently under construction in Bologna (Italy). The focus of the study concerns the use of on-site renewable climate (energy) resources with special attention given passive reduction of summer overheating and daylight. For these tasks a parametric model was developed to support the decision making process and the paper will present its potential with respect to performance-oriented design during the conceptual design phase of roof structure. The very first conceptual design developed by the architectural office was assumed as a starting point for the inclusion of performance criteria. In the preliminary design of the roof uncomfortable conditions were expected under the whole roof in the summer. Various strategies for improving the thermal comfort were investigated, involving a large set of combined systems. Not all of these will be detailed in this paper. Instead we will focus on the ones directly affected by the geometry of the roof. Those are mainly air flow for cooling and the reduction of solar gain, in combination with their effects on daylight. Their investigation was based on a chain of dependencies to be integrated in the design process. With respect to that, parametric modelling was used. Parametric modelling allows both geometrical entities and their relationships to be represented. These relationships are structured in a hierarchical chain of dependencies, established during the preliminary parameterization process. The independent properties of the model are usually expressed through independent parameters, and their variations generate different configurations of the model. By making use of this potential, three project scales were parametrically explored. At the large scale, parametric variations of the overall shape of the roof were investigated in relation to cooling through ventilation and here the parametric model allowed for the generation of both different configurations of the roof, including its structural morphology and variations of its structural tessellation. At the medium scale, the integration of openable modules was investigated in relation to air extraction for cooling; with respect to this, the parametric model allows exploring openings based on variations of size and distribution. At the small scale, various options were explored for the cladding system, in order to reduce the direct solar gain while still allowing the income of indirect natural light. The parametric model was used to investigate the configuration of self-shading modules and their integration in the structure. Specific emphasis will be given to the small scale. The advantages in design process and the current limits of the parametric modelling approach used here will be discussed in the paper.

summary Robotic additive manufacturing has garnered significant research and development interest due to its transformative potential in architecture, engineering, and construction as a cost-effective, material-efficient, and energy-saving fabrication method. However, despite its potential, conventional approaches heavily depend on meticulously optimized work environments, as robotic arms possess limited information regarding their immediate surroundings (Bechthold, 2010; Bechthold & King, 2013). Furthermore, such approaches are often restricted to planar build surfaces and slicing algorithms due to computational and physical practicality, which consequently limits the feasibility of robotic solutions in scenarios involving complex geometries and materials. Building on previous work (Çapunaman et al., 2022), this research investigates conformal 3D printing of clay using a 6 degrees-of-freedom robot arm and a vision-based sensing framework on parametrically reconfigurable tensile hyperbolic paraboloid (hypar) formwork. In this paper, we present the implementation details of the formwork system, share findings from preliminary testing of the proposed workflow, and demonstrate application feasibility through a design exercise that aims to fabricate unique components for a poly-hypar surface structure. The formwork system also offers parametric control over generating complex, non-planar tensile surfaces to be printed on. Within the scope of this workflow, the vision-based sensing framework is employed to generate a digital twin informing iterative tuning of the formwork geometry and conformal toolpath planning on scanned geometries. Additionally, we utilized the augmented fabrication framework to observe and analyze deformations in the printed clay body that occurs during air drying. The proposed workflow, in conjunction with the vision-based sensing framework and the reconfigurable formwork, aims to minimize time and material waste in custom formwork fabrication and printing support materials for complex geometric panels and shell structures.

summary The Attractive City Generator is an interactive installation with which users can create or rearrange virtual cities by placing and moving physical objects. Through the set of simple inputs that the users provide and which represent city areas, landscapes or landmarks, the ACG is capable of creating complex and growing cities. In addition, a plethora of factual feedback on these cities is calculated. Becoming physically involved enhances the learningprocess and increases the user’s interest. The users are drawn to the colourful and simple interface. Due to the practical feedback that the city returns, the users can feel more attached to the city they have created. A dynamic dialogue is formed between the city and its creators, that involves the wishes of the users versus the needs of the virtual city, the practical interaction on the table versus the theoretical calculations taking place inside the computer, the physical input versus the digital output.

summary Increasing productivity and efficiency is an important issue in the AEC field. This area is mainly characterized by fragmentation, heterogeneous teams with low lifetimes and many uncertainties. 4D CAD is one of the greatest innovations in recent years. It consists in linking a 3D model of the building with the works planning in order to simulate the construction evolution over time. 4D CAD can fill several needs from design to project management through constructivity analysis and tasks planning (Tommelein 2003). The literature shows that several applications have been proposed to improve the 4D CAD use (Chau et al. 2004; Lu et al. 2007; Seok & al. 2009). In addition, studies have shown the real impact of 4D CAD use in construction projects (Staub-French & Khanzode 2007; Dawood & Sika 2007). More recently, Mahalingam et al. (2010) showed that the collaborative use of 4D CAD is particularly useful during the pre-construction phase for comparing the constructability of working methods, for visually identifying conflicts and clashes (overlaps), and as visual tool for practitioners to discuss and to plan project progress. So the advantage of the 4D CAD collaborative use is demonstrated. Moreover, several studies have been conducted both in the scientific community and in the industrial world to improve it (Zhou et al. 2009; Kang et al. 2007). But an important need that remains in collaborative 4D CAD use in construction projects is about the adaptation of visualization to the users business needs. Indeed, construction projects have very specific characteristics (fragmentation, variable team, different roles from one project to another). Moreover, in the AEC field several visualization techniques can represent the same concept and actors choose one or another of these techniques according to their specific needs related to the task they have to perform. For example, the tasks planning may be represented by a Gantt chart or by a PERT network and the building elements can be depicted with a 3D model or a 2D plan. The classical view (3D + Gantt) proposed to all practitioners in the available 4D tools seems therefore not suiting the needs of all. So, our research is based on the hypothesis that adapting the visualization to individual business needs could significantly improve the collaboration. This work relies on previous ones and aim to develop a method 1) to choose the best suited views for performed tasks and 2) to compose adapted multiple views for each actor, that we call “business views”. We propose a 4 steps-method to compose business views. The first step identifies the users’ business needs, defining the individual practices performed by each actor, identifying his business tasks and his information needs. The second step identifies the visualization needs related to the identified business needs. For this purpose, the user’s interactions and visualization tasks are described. This enables choosing the most appropriate visualization techniques for each need (step 3). At this step, it is important to describe the visualization techniques and to be able to compare them. Therefore, we proposed a business view metamodel. The final step (step 4) selects the adapted views, defines the coordination mechanisms and the interaction principles in order to compose coordinated visualizations. A final step consists in a validation work to ensure that the composed views really match to the described business needs. This paper presents the latest version of the method and especially presents our latest works about its first and second steps. These include making more generic the business tasks description in order to be applicable within most of construction projects and enabling to make correspondence with visualization tasks.

summary Dwelling environment is not intelligent if it does not include the concept of home. The emergence of ICT allowed new functions as well as new ways of performing the traditional ones. The need to be online does not remove the need of privacy and to print the site. New ways of living require rethinking dwelling typology to flexibility. Intelligent environments will appear to elevate the sense of home, where security, autonomy, independence, comfort and interaction will be crucial to promote a more qualified life. Technological solutions can be driven in different directions: energy efficiency; lightening and temperature control, video surveillance, access control, etc., assistive environments; entertainment solutions like home theater and professional ones; all have in common to conceive the environment that matches user’s expectancies, where human interaction and social participation emerge as crucial requirements.

summary This research investigates the relationship between efficiency, precision and tactile variation within architectural design and fabrication. A digitally driven design may be seamlessly precise and consistent but also feel sterile and distant from the human body. A materially driven design may be intimate and tactile but lack the accuracy needed to connect elements. Digital fabrication techniques are combined with hand craft material manipulations in search of a unique hybrid tectonic that merges connection accuracies with subtle but sensual divergences between repeating modules. Prototypes have been constructed at the object and inhabitable scale.

summary Digital technologies and processes have been used to generate architectural form for over two decades. Recent advances in digital technologies have allowed virtual digital environments to be constructed from physical movement. But can a bridge that connects the physical and virtual realms be developed? Can this, currently arbitrary form making be grounded in human activity and subsequently be integrated in to real time, space, and place. This research asks how space generated from the process of digital morphogenesis can be related to meaning beyond just the creation of form. Existing research asks how new form can be discovered, or what material and structural possibilities can be derived from form, through these morphological processes. The aim of this research project is to complete the loop, physical–virtual–physical, and to connect these digital processes to meaning through human activity. Its aim is to discover the consequences of generated spatial envelopes that are manipulated through digital morphogenesis and related to specific human activity, in the pursuit of possibilities for a digitally generated architecture that is socially engaged. This is not random form finding, wherein architecture tries to imitate biological processes or form, but form finding that is connected to a primary architectural concern, how is the architecture being used by humans.

summary Recent studies in contemporary architecture have developed a variety of parameters regarding the information paradigm which have consequently brought different results and techniques to the process of architectural design. Thus, the emergence of an ecological thinking environment and its involvement in scientific matters has determined links moving beyond the conventional references that rely on information. It is characterized as an interconnected and dynamic interaction, concerning both a theoretical background and providing, at the same time, appropriate means in the architectural design process (Saggio, 2007, 117). The study is based on the assumption that Information Theory leads into a bidirectional model which is based on interaction. According to it, I want to emphasize the presence of the human body in both the architectural creation process and the use of architectural space. The aim of my study, is consequently an evaluation of how this corporeal view related to the human body, can be organized and interlinked in the process of architectural design. My hypothesis relies on the interactive process between the information paradigm and the ecological one. The integration of this corporeal view influences the whole process of architectural design, improving abilities and knowledge (Figure 1). I like to refer to this as a missing ring, as it occurs within a circular vital system with all its elements closely linked to each other and in particular, emphasizes architecture as a living being.

title ViSA: A Parametric Design Modeling Method to Enhance Visual Sensitivity Control and Analysis

summary The ability of parametric computer-aided design systems to generate models rapidly enables designers to explore the downstream impacts of changes to key design parameters. However, the typical modeling functions provided in the parametric systems can become insufficient when such exploration is needed for increasingly complex parametric design models. Main challenges for exploration that we observed are control and analysis of changes on the design model and in particular, when they are introduced continuously. The system interfaces and the human-visual perception system alleviate these challenges. In this study, we demonstrate ViSA, a Visual Sensitivity Analysis method that aims to make the effects of change within a parametric model controllable, measurable and apparent for designers. The approach aims to improve visually analyzing the sensitivity of a design model to planned parametric changes. The method proposes customizable control and visualization features in the model that are decoupled from each other at the design level, while providing interfaces between them through parametric associations. We present findings from our case studies in addition to the results of a user study demonstrating the applicability and limitations of the proposed method.
