title Examination of the Designs by Auguste Perret Using Digitally-Enabled Forensic Techniques

summary This paper discusses how digitally-enabled techniques can be used to augment our understanding of a designer's work, particularly in relation to unbuilt or lost projects. In the first half of the twentieth century Auguste Perret gained international recognition for his buildings and we employ two of his unbuilt museums as the basis for illustration of the technique. Current knowledge of his unbuilt projects is based on surviving literature and incomplete illustrations. We show that the use of digitally-enabled techniques facilitates a fuller examination of the original material. Interpretation of material requires parallel studies into the architect, their influences and the context they operated within in order to extrapolate and fill gaps in an informed way. The construction of various digital representations enables a forensic analysis of the projects; consequently we can produce a richer set of information that can, in turn, enhance our analysis and understanding of an architect and their work, in this case, Perret.

summary Local Code uses geospatial analysis to identify thousands of publicly owned abandoned sites in major US cities, imagining this distributed, vacant landscape as a new urban system. Deploying GIS analysis in conjunction with parametric design software, a landscape proposal for each site is tailored to local conditions, optimizing thermal and hydrological performance to enhance local performance and enhance the whole city’s ecology. Relieving burdens on existing infrastructure, such a digitally mediated, dispersed system provides important opportunities for urban resilience and transformation. In a case study of San Francisco, the projects’ quantifiable effects on energy usage and stormwater remediation would eradicate 88-96% of the need for more expensive, centralized, sewer, and electrical upgrades. As a final, essential layer, the project proposes digital citizen participation to conceive a new, more public infrastructure as well.

title Parametric Design Process of a Complex Building In Practice Using Programmed Code As Master Model

summary Parameter based design explorations inevitably require a unified master model that represents the current design state, where each parameter being explored is essentially a critical sub-case of this master model. Throughout the constantly changing design state, it is beneficial to maintain a master model that is flexible and adaptive. This paper describes the design process of a complex building whose master model documented the design logic through implementation of software code. This process is illustrated by the case study of Lotte Super Tower (Seoul, Korea) from the beginning of schematic design to end of construction document phase. By maintaining the master model as a platform-free software code, in contrast to platform-dependent methods, the case study illuminates the advantages of documenting the generative logic behind design variations in a way that allows greater flexibility and a higher level of alignment with design intent.

summary Digital workflows from the design to the production of buildings have received significant recent attention in architectural research. The need for both integrated systems for design collaboration (Boeykens and Neuckermans, 2006) and clear and flexible communication flows for non-standard fabrication outcomes have been identified as fundamental (Scheurer, 2010). This paper reports on the development of a digital “design system” for the design and prototyping of an acoustic enclosure for meetings in a large open work environment, theFabPod. The aim was to keep this system open for temporal flexibility in as many aspects of the finalisation of the design as possible. The system provides novel examples of both integrated collaboration and clear communication flow.  (1) Acoustics is included as a design driver in early stages through the connection of digital simulation tools with design models. (2) Bi-directional information flows and clear modularisation of workflow underpins the system from design through to fabrication and assembly of the enclosure. Following the completion and evaluation of the FabPod prototype, the openness of the system will be tested through its application in subsequent design and prototyping iterations. Design development will respond to performance testing through user engagement methods and acoustic measurement.

summary The Laboratory of Representation and Ideation (RI.Lab10) operates under the assumption that the different representations used in architecture create, modify and/or confirm different interpretation methods and mechanisms of perception, along with the information they produce. Architectonic representation allows us to understand and assess relationships between the tools used in a project and their resulting architectonic forms, which are placed within the context of social structures and cultural paradigms where they are developed. The main objective of such didactic experiences is to adapt available technological resources—in a strategic and integrative fashion—to expand the resources and capacities of the complex systems that intervene in the act of projecting architecture.

These benefits have become very popular in the development of video games and simulators. This work proposes a new generation system—a layer generator that incorporates the best features of such systems with real - time and new generation techniques. To the present, the layer generator has been applied to games, and may potentially be used with other systems.

summary We present this paper as a proposal for a preliminary design prototype for urban architecture based on the concept of versatility, that is, spaces that can be easily changed, either on the effects level (i.e. illumination, projection), or on the mechanical level (i.e. skin movement). These spaces can be transformed by changing their proportions, limits and assistance. This versatility is provided by domotics, and is verified in 3D graphics and animations. The proposal uses a domotic system as the central control for illumination, environment outfitting, skin movements, security systems, and multimedia.

summary Media façades grant infinitely many faces to a building and can change the architectural meaning of what a façade is. They can also help to transform the face of the building into an over-size communication device for public (Borras, 2010). Contemporary media façades mostly rely on the content of their screens, and only a small number of them physicality of the screen itself. Precedent building façades that incorporate moving componentsareunable to function as displays. In this paper we present a media façade design, titled“Tran[s]quillity”, in which we fuse reconfigurable building com-ponents with display technologies to achieve a unique design. As well as fulfilling the function of a regular media wall -as a crisp screen- we imagine Tran[s]quillity as a transformable kinetic sculpture that can act as a screen of physical depth to introduce greater functionality and interactivity.

summary This paper integrates traditional techniques with the parametric approach in ceramic fabrication by outlining several key parameters in both the traditional and digital ceramic fabrication process, and investigating how these parameters can accommodate parametric variation from the digital model. Findings from three experiments with different parameters suggest a promising landscape for traditional ceramic fabrication to be more compatible, not only with the parametric variation in digital modeling, but also with customized digital fabrication.

MoD uses sensors to understand fleet distribution asymmetry and price incentives to motivate users to drive vehicles to stations that need the them most thereby increasing service performance. This paper presents current work done at the Smart Cities group of the MIT Media Lab for understanding decision - making in dynamically priced vehicle sharing systems, and exploring the circumstances under which such systems can become stable, sustainable, and profitable.

summary Novice designers are gaining increased access to CAD tools for design computing and digital fabrication that were once exclusively used by expert designers. As evidenced by the rise in manufacturing incubation facilities, novices can prototype their ideas in ways similar to expert designers. Also available for novice designers are online rendering consultants, online manufacturing and online ecommerce as a way to distribute and sell products. Discussed here are the reasons for this emergence, complications when using design and digital fabrication as a standard mode of production and new focus for experts.

summary How do design tools feedback material behaviour to the designer? Digital design tools in use by designers today provide a rich environment for design of form but offer little feedback of the material that ultimately realise that form. This lack of materialism limits the value of the design tool and the exploration of the design space where material behaviour can provide important feedback. This work examines the modes and value of material feedback in design using systems engineering principles, illustrates the challenge with current tools and explores a prototype simulative interface. It approaches the problem from a new perspective of simulating physical manipulation and experiment rather than existing CAD paradigms.

summary Modern materialization of architecture depends on the use of regularized, highly processed remotely - sourced materials produced through a centralized, industrialized process. This involves energy use, increasing the environmental impact and cost of the final structure. This study investigates leveraging digital technology to capture near - site material geometry, providing design tools and processing the material on - site. Optimization techniques are applied to minimize the use and processing of materials while meeting design goals and engineering constraints. A simulation and prototype using digitally selected and cut trees as main bearing members in a structure is used to confirm the proposed process.

summary Algorithm Aided Architectural Design (AAAD) is considered a second paradigm shift in the Architectural design process after the first one of bridging the conventional design process to the digital realm of design. This paper is divided into two parts, the first part comprehends the Algorithmic Architecture approach of from the point of view of tools, techniques, theories and practice in order to find the Algotecture theories on the map of Digital Architecture. Then, the paper exemplifies an application on Algorithmic Architecture. FALLINGWATER TOOLBOX VERSION 1.0 is a computational design demo tool for architects to aid in the house schematic design phase according to an analytical study of Frank Lloyd Wright's basic design rules and spatial program of his masterpiece; FallingWater House, (Edgar J. Kaufmann family house 1939). These rules have been transferred to algorithms and code thereafter. At a preceding stage, the Graphical User Interface (GUI) was developed using MAXScript 9.0. Using the FALLINGWATER TOOLBOX, infinite number of house prototypes can be generated within few minutes. Although, the FWT is based on a hypothetical design problem of producing prototype alternatives for a new house with the same identity of the Edgar Kaufmann House, the concept of the tool can be applied on a wider range of problems. It may help generating prototype alternative solutions for residential compounds design according to the required constraints.

summary In this paper we present a new parametric approach based on urban regulation, in order to generate digital models of building, directly within a three-dimensional geo-referenced environment. The system allows user, through implementation of specific generative procedures, to manage interactive architectural design processes. The designer is able to explore all possible infinite scenarios and the various possible design alternatives, by changing the parameters values and verifying in real time the results of the changes. This paper presents a short review of the main related works and an experiment.

summary While patterns have a spotty history in architecture, their definitions and uses in other fields offer new possibilities for design. This paper examines those definitions and uses—including theories put forward by architectural theorist, Christopher Alexander; art educator, Gyorgy Kepes; chemist, Ilya Prigogine; and anthropologist, Gregory Bateson. Of particular interest is the shift from eternal, essential, universal, and fundamental patterns to fleeting, superficial, specific, and incidental versions. While endemic to many contemporary architectural practices, this multifaceted view of patterns was anticipated by Bateson, who saw them as agents of evolution and learning. His desire to combine redundancy and noise offers architects new ways to understand patterns and use them to link form and information, matter and thought.
