summary Data is ubiquitous in our cities. However, designing a knowledge network about our cities is an arduous task, given that data sensed cannot be used directly, human significance must be added. Adding human significance can be achieved via an automated “expert system (ES)” in which domain expert knowledge are stored in a knowledge-based repository. The domain expert knowledge is matched with the corresponding data to derive specific inference which can aid decision making for urban stakeholders.This requires amalgamation of various interdisciplinary techniques. This paper presents a survey of existing technologies in order to investigate the emerging issues surrounding the design of a live knowledge network for sustainable urban living. The maps and models of the existing infrastructure of our cities that include a wealth of information such as topography, layout, zoning, land use, transportation networks, public facilities, and resource network grids need to be integrated with real-time spatiotemporal information about the city. Public data in forms of archives and data streams as well as online data from the social network and the Web can be analyzed using data mining techniques. The domain experts need to interpret the results of data mining into knowledge that will augment the existing knowledge base and models of our cities. In addition to the analysis of archived and streamed data sources from the built environment, the emerging state-of-the-art Web 2.0 and mobile technologies are presented as the potential techniques to crowddesign a live urban knowledge network. Data modeling, data mining, crowdsourcing, and social intervention techniques are reviewed in this paper with examples from the related work and our own experiments.

title Collaborative Design and Live Interaction with Parametric Models using UbiMash

summary Due to the complexity of parametric modeling, it has been the task of only a handful of experts in the design team to develop, build and modify parametric models. The complexity of parametric models increases exponentially with the number of design aspects it incorporates. The ambiguity of parametric models towards the modeled design intent explains that modifying the model is often isolated as an individual exercise. Developments in physical and ubiquitous computing, however, allow for collaboration and interaction with parametric models in other ways. Communication, coordination, and interaction between parametric models and the physical and social environment are the context of this paper. The paper describes some of the projects that were outcomes of the SmartGeometry 2010 workshops. These projects are dealing with mass collaboration using Twitter, tangible interfaces, parametric design and construction coordination and geometrical interpretation of datasets.

summary An architectural community of practice is formed by designers working together on a common goal. Members of this community share a common professional language where the vocabulary of this language represents a shared understanding. Members of a community of practice operate both by recording common knowledge into documents and by actively participating in social processes in order to personally contextualize this recorded knowledge. ArcIMap is a framework, consisting of a method and a computational model, that facilitates communities of practice to acquire, represent, share and reusedesign information and knowledge, and targets the creation of situated digital environments where teams of designers communicate and collaborate using this information and knowledge. This paper describes ArcIMap, its background, and one of its implementations for a community of practice working on an urban renewal project in an educational context.

summary With the advent of digital technology, several transformations occurred in contemporary art, such as the refusal of established structures to pragmatically use colors, forms, perspective and/or materials, as well as causing renewed references to local, regional, or singular cultures. In this context, design and artistic research migrates to new experimentation with the sensitive, intelligent, perceptive elements found within technological realms. In our research, artistic multimedia interactive installations conceal contemporary concepts and explore computer technology. We believe that this field of research is a powerful resource to develop dialogues between different cultures and promote social and technological inclusiveness.

summary The concept maps built and shared on the internet through the CmapTools software resources were used in this exploratory study to follow and analyze the process of collaborative design in public school learning situations. The samples, taken from a Brazilian architectural graduate public school, were maps built in housing design projects developed in a digital environment. A constructivist approach supports the learning method in the use of the net environment for collaborative design of sustainable social housing. This is the base for further development of alternative methodological - theoretical approaches in the context of teaching sustainable design.

summary Information is ubiquitous due to the digitization of our world. There is an unprecedented volume of information in our physical and socially networked world that can be used to inform our design problems and the way we design. To date, designers of parametric models have been using design precedents, archived data, and simulated datasets to inform their modeling process, but live information sources from the environment are rarely considered as direct input to models. The paper discusses novel experiments in which digital parametric design models are extended with live input and parameters from physical environments and online social networks. The paper also presents UbiMash, an open source software platform that was introduced and refined during the dev elopment of these experiments.

title The interprofessional virtual design studio

summary With the advent of Web 2.0 technologies, the Virtual Design Studio (VDS) has been revived in many schools of architecture around the globe. The recently evolving online Social Networks (SN) Platforms, as instruments for learning, have provided a potentially fruitful operative base for VDS. Yet these platforms have not enabled the VDS to explore new frontiers. All participants come from the same professional field and learn elements directly related to their existing design curriculum. The development of the VDS for interprofessional learning moves design education beyond conventional boundaries. The Interprofessional VDS (IPVDS) is an innovative method of teaching students from two different professional faculties the skills required for successful consultancy and promotional communication in the public realm. The IPVDS enabled students to develop consultancy skills and evidence-based communication strategies appropriate for disparate target audiences. It employed a digital SN learning platform to engage remotely-located students in acquiring new skills, transferring knowledge and achieving learning outcomes that enrich their professional experience. The paper presents details of the IPVDS, its methodology, outcomes, and evaluation of the studio, and discusses how the IPVDS is effective in enabling architectural students to understand and use communication and consultancy skills for collaboration across professional disciplines for the purpose of community engagement.

summary In this paper, we propose a design of an interactive message wall as a public display for large group setting such as a university community to encourage user participation, social interaction and creation of user content. It is a public display for collective sharing of thoughts. It is also a portal for online users to make their presence felt in the physical place. Both users at the physical place and in an online virtual world can post messages to the interactive message wall. The paper will present user studies carried out with a mock-up message wall to establish how onsite users use it, their preferred ways to leave messages, what medium of content (voice, photo, text, video) they are willing to share, and user participation. The results of the user studies will inform the design of the interactive message wall and provide learning points on how to promote user participation.

summary It can be said that improving tourism facilities will be indispensable for the economy of our country in the future. To improve tourism facilities, tourism information evaluated by tourists should be collected and transformed into useful knowledge, and then this knowledge should be used for the planning and the improvement of tour routes and the infrastructure of sightseeing areas. Therefore, this research describes a tourism information collection system. The collection system was used to identify tourists’ needs accurately, effectively and widely by using a CPCG (Cell-Phone with Camera and GPS) and by developing a SIMS (Sightseeing Information Management Server). To verify the proposed methods, the author carried out a social experiment. The experiment showed that the proposed methods were effective.

summary The paper proposes integrated design and building systems for the provision of sustainable customized housing. It advances previous work by applying a methodology to generate these systems from vernacular precedents. The methodology is based on the use of shape grammars to derive and encode a contemporary system from the precedents. The combined set of rules can be applied to generate housing solutions tailored to specific user and site contexts. The provision of housing to shelter the population affected by the 2010 Haiti earthquake illustrates the application of the methodology. A computer implementation is currently under development in C# using the BIM platform provided by Revit. The world experiences a sharp increase in population and a strong urbanization process. These phenomena call for the development of effective means to solve the resulting housing deficit. The response of the informal sector to the problem, which relies mainly on handcrafted processes, has resulted in an increase of urban slums in many of the big cities, which lack sanitary and spatial conditions. The formal sector has produced monotonous environments based on the idea of mass production that one size fits all, which fails to meet individual and cultural needs. We propose an alternative approach in which mass customization is used to produce planed environments that possess qualities found in historical settlements. Mass customization, a new paradigm emerging due to the technological developments of the last decades, combines the economy of scale of mass production and the aesthetics and functional qualities of customization. Mass customization of housing is defined as the provision of houses that respond to the context in which they are built. The conceptual model for the mass customization of housing used departs from the idea of a housing type, which is the combined result of three systems (Habraken, 1988) -- spatial, building system, and stylistic -- and it includes a design system, a production system, and a computer system (Duarte, 2001). In previous work, this conceptual model was tested by developing a computer system for existing design and building systems (Benr__s and Duarte, 2009). The current work advances it by developing new and original design, building, and computer systems for a particular context. The urgent need to build fast in the aftermath of catastrophes quite often overrides any cultural concerns. As a result, the shelters provided in such circumstances are indistinct and impersonal. However, taking individual and cultural aspects into account might lead to a better identification of the population with their new environment, thereby minimizing the rupture caused in their lives. As the methodology to develop new housing systems is based on the idea of architectural precedents, choosing existing vernacular housing as a precedent permits the incorporation of cultural aspects and facilitates an identification of people with the new housing. In the Haiti case study, we chose as a precedent a housetype called “gingerbread houses”, which includes a wide range of houses from wealthy to very humble ones. Although the proposed design system was inspired by these houses, it was decided to adopt a contemporary take. The methodology to devise the new type was based on two ideas: precedents and transformations in design. In architecture, the use of precedents provides designers with typical solutions for particular problems and it constitutes a departing point for a new design. In our case, the precedent is an existing housetype. It has been shown (Duarte, 2001) that a particular housetype can be encoded by a shape grammar (Stiny, 1980) forming a design system. Studies in shape grammars have shown that the evolution of one style into another can be described as the transformation of one shape grammar into another (Knight, 1994). The used methodology departs takes off from these ideas and it comprises the following steps (Duarte, 2008): (1) Selection of precedents, (2) Derivation of an archetype; (3) Listing of rules; (4) Derivation of designs; (5) Cataloguing of solutions; (6) Derivation of tailored solution.

summary In the last few years, building renovation has gained an unprecedented relevance in Portugal, yet it is an asymmetric and urban phenomenon for the study of which, in space and in time, traditional statistic tools have limitations. Using computational tools, it is possible to generate maps that correlate building permits georeferenced data and their processing time. Using Lisbon City Hall database of planning applications and georeferenced vector information, two approaches are developed to represent the internal dynamic of renewal of the city between 2010 and 2016. These maps can be useful to improve the accessibility of planning information to citizens.

title Multi-touch - the future of design interaction

summary The next major revolution for design is to bring the natural user interaction into design activities. Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) brought a new approach that was more effective compared to their conventional predecessors. In recent years, Natural User Interfaces (NUI) have advanced user experiences and multi-touch and gesture technologies provide new opportunities for a variety of potential uses in design. Much attention has been paid to leverage in the design of interactive interfaces. The mouse input and desktop screen metaphors limit the information sharing for multiple users and also delayed the direct interaction for communication between each other. This paper proposes the innovative method by integrating game engine ‘Unity3D’ with multi-touch tangible interfaces. Unity3D provides a game development tool as part of its application package that has been designed to let users to focus on creating new games. However, it does not limit the usage of area to design additional game scenarios since the benefits of Unity3D is allowing users to build 3D environments with its customizable and easy to use editor, graphical pipelines to openGL (http://unity3d.com/, 2010 ). It creates Virtual Reality (VR) environments which can simulates places in the real world, as well as the virtual environments helping architects and designers to vividly represent their design concepts through 3D visualizations, and interactive media installations in a detailed multi-sensory experience. Stereoscopic displays advanced their spatial ability while solving issues to design e.g. urban spaces. The paper presents how a multi-touch tabletop can be used for these design collaboration and communication tasks. By using natural gestures, designers can now communicate and share their ideas by manipulating the same reference simultaneously using their own input simultaneously. Further studies showed that 3Dl forms are perceived and understood more readily through haptic and proprioceptive perception of tangible representations than through visual representation alone (Gillet et al, 2005). Based on the authors’ framework presented at the last CAADFutures, the benefits of integrating 3D visualization and tactile sensory can be illustrated in this platform (Chen and Wang, 2009), For instance, more than one designer can manipulate the 3D geometry objects on tabletop directly and can communicate successfully their ideas freely without having to waiting for the next person response. It made the work more effective which increases the overall efficiency. Designers can also collect the real-time data by any change they make instantly. The possibilities of Uniy3D make designing very flexible and fun, it is deeply engaging and expressive. Furthermore, the unity3D is revolutionizing the game development industry, its breakthrough development platform for creating highly interactive 3D content on the web (http://unity3d.com/ , 2010) or similar to the interface of modern multimedia devices such as the iPhone, therefore it allows the designers to work remotely in a collaborative way to integrate the design process by using the individual mobile devices while interacting design in a common platform. In design activities, people create an external representation of a domain, often of their own ideas and understanding. This platform helps learners to make their ideas concrete and explicit, and once externalized, subsequently they reflect upon their work how well it sits the real situation. The paper demonstrates how this tabletop innovatively replaces the typical desktop metaphor. In summary, the paper addresses two major issues through samples of collaborative design: firstly presenting aspects of learners’ interactions with physical objects, whereby tangible interfaces enables them constructing expressive representations passively (Marshall, 2007), while focussing on other tasks; and secondly showing how this novel design tool allows designers to actively create constructions that might not be possible with conventional media.

summary The purpose of this paper is to present the results of research conducted at the ICESI University in Colombia, which was aimed at designing a method of collaborative interaction between individuals in public spaces using mobile devices to express themselves, encounter others, and reflect on public spaces. The result is the design of a prototype—an interactive installation that projects the information sent from cell phones via Bluetooth and text messaging. This content can be transformed by users through a distance sensor.

summary The Waiheke Gateway Pavilion, designed by Stevens Lawson Architects originally for the 2010 New Zealand Venice Biennale Pavilion, was brought to fruition for the 2017 Headland Sculpture on the Gulf Sculpture trail by students from Unitec Institute of Technology. The cross disciplinary team comprised of students from architecture and construction disciplines working in conjunction with a team of industry professionals including architects, engineers, construction managers, project managers, and lecturers to bring the designed structure, an irregular spiral shape, to completion. The structure is made up of 261 unique glulam beams, to be digitally cut using computer numerical control (CNC) process. However, due to a malfunction with the institutions in-house CNC machine, an alternative hand-cut workflow approach had to be pursued requiring integration of both digital and analogue construction methods. The digitally encoded data was extracted and transferred into shop drawings and assembly diagrams for the fabrication and construction stages of design. Accessibility to the original 3D modelling software was always needed during the construction stages to provide clarity to the copious amounts of information that was transferred into print paper form. Although this design to fabrication project was challenging, the outcome was received as a triumph amongst the architecture community.

summary The paper focuses on the early stages of the design process where the architect needs assistance in finding reference projects and describes different aspects of a concept for retrieving previous design solutions with similar layout characteristics. Such references are typically used to see how others have solved a similar architectural problem or simply for inspiration. Current electronic search methods use textual information rather than graphical information. The configuration of space and the relations between rooms are hard to represent using keywords, in fact transforming these spatial configurations into verbally expressed typologies tends to result in unclear and often imprecise descriptions of architecture. Nowadays, modern IT-technologies lead to fundamental changes during the process of designing buildings. Digital representations of architecture require suitable approaches to the storage, indexing and management of information as well as adequate retrieval methods. Traditionally planning information is represented in the form of floor plans, elevations, sections and textual descriptions. State of the art digital representations include renderings, computer aided design (CAD) and semantic information like Building Information Modelling (BIM) including 2D and 3D file formats such as Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) (IAI, 2010). In the paper, we examine the development of IT-technologies in the area of case-based reasoning (Richter et al., 2007) to provide a sketch-based submission and retrieval system for publishing and researching building layouts including their manipulation and subsequent use. The user interface focuses on specifying space and their relations by drawing them. This query style supports the spatial thinking approach that architects use, who often have a visual representation in mind without being able to provide an accurate description of the spatial configuration. The semantic fingerprint proposed by (Langenhan, 2008) is a description and query language for creating an index of floor plans to store meta-data about architecture, which can be used as signature for retrieving reference projects. The functional spaces, such as living room or kitchen and the relation among on another, are used to create a fingerprint. Furthermore, we propose a visual sketch-based interface (Weber et al., 2010) based on the Touch&Write paradigm (Liwicki et al., 2010) for the submission and the retrieval phase. During the submission process the architect is sketching the space-boundaries, space relations and functional coherence's. Using state of the art document analysis techniques, the architects are supported offering an automatic detection of room boundaries and their physical relations. During the retrieval the application will interpret the sketches of the architect and find reference projects based on a similarity based search utilizing the semantic fingerprint. By recommending reference projects, architects will be able to reuse collective experience which match the current requirements. The way of performing a search using a sketch as a query is a new way of thinking and working. The retrieval of 3D models based on a sketched shape are already realized in several domains. We already propose a step further, using the semantics of a spatial configuration. Observing the design process of buildings reveals that the initial design phase serves as the foundation for the quality of the later outcome. The sketch-based approach to access valuable information using the semantic fingerprint enables the user to digitally capture knowledge about architecture, to recover and reuse it in common-sense. Furthermore, automatically analysed fingerprints can put forward both commonly used as well as best practice projects. It will be possible to rate architecture according to the fingerprint of a building.

summary This paper presents a method for simulating minor deformations that result from collisions on objects’ surfaces. The method alters only bump maps and leaves mesh geometry unchanged; it is suited to real - time applications where the primary concern is computational efficiency. The paper provides a representative model for deformable objects. Texture mapping and computer graphics techniques based on lighting are referenced as well. Finally, results are provided, along with the most noteworthy findings obtained with the use of this method.

summary The operation and construction of buildings account for almost half of the energy use in the United States. To meet global climate change targets, energy consumption of buildings in the long term must be reduced as well as carbon dioxide emissions. This article explores a theoretical building envelope that generates energy and produces water by drawing water vapor out of the air to deliver new sources of water; it lowers indoor humidity in hot and humid climates. The design in this model considers materiality, surface area and environmental conditions to influence build- ing form. The case in this article considers materials and systems application in the design of the building envelope. The hygroscopic building envelope design strategically senses varying conditions of concentration and density of moisture laden air to provide visual indications of its performance. It is a building skin that emulates biological processes by creating pressure differences and transferring energy in various forms.

title Parametric Performative Systems: Designing a Bioclimatic Responsive Skin

summary This paper assumes the façade as an innovative element of interaction between the inside and the outside: the architectural skin. As in nature, one of its most significant functions is the energy exchange with the environment. Similarly, efficiency increases by passive and active responses to climate conditions and site orientation. This research explores the potential of parametric techniques, programming and digital manufacturing, to design and build a Bioclimatic Responsive Skin (BRS). Firstly, we designed a bio-component applicable to any surface due to its parametric nature. Secondly, we fabricated two non-reactive working prototypes to study the manufacturing and construction details. Thirdly, we integrated the physical and the digital interfaces by using Generative Components™, Arduino, and Ubimash to generate a kinetic responsive model. This prototype was presented at SmartGeometry Workshop and Conference 2010. Finally, Lem3a architecture used this BRS in a real design project for a Sustainable house in New Hope, PA.
