summary Digital Fabrication and Hybrid Interface: Lessons in Agriculture :abstract Two vitally important fields of work in architecture and computing—in digital fabrication methods and in the development of interfaces between digital and analog systems—can find new forms in their combination with one another. Moreover, a recent such experiment in the production of landscape rather than building not only suggests a number of implications for architectural work, but of ecological, economic and urban structures that underlie the projects’s visible formal and aesthetic orders. This project, “Hyperculture: Earth as Interface,” studied the potential outcomes of modifying a commonly employed information infrastructure for the optimization of agricultural production throughout most of America’s heartland; and that same infrastructure’s latent flexibility to operate in both “read” and “write” modes, as a means for collaborative input and diversified, shared output. In the context of industrialized agriculture, this work not only negotiates seemingly contradictory demands with diametrically opposed ecological and social outcomes; but also shows the fabrication of landscape as suggestive of other, more architectural applications in the built environment. The Hyperculture project is sited within several contexts: industrial, geographically local, ecological, and within the digital protocols of landscape processing known as “precision agriculture.” Today, these typically work together toward the surprising result of unvariegated repetition, known commonly as monoculture. After decades of monoculture’s proliferation, its numerous inefficiencies have come under broad recent scrutiny, leading to diverse thinking on ways to redress seemingly conflicting demands such as industry’s reliance on mass-production and automation; the demand for variety or customization in consumer markets; and even regulatory inquiries into the ecological and zoning harms brought by undiversified land use. Monoculture, in short, is proving unsustainable from economic, environmental, and even aesthetic and zoning standpoints. But its handling in digital interfaces, remote sensing and algorithmically directed fabrication is not.

title Designing for Constant Change: An Adaptable Growth Model for Architecture

summary Design of universal components that can tolerate technological, environmental, and circumstantial changes over time is a challenge for an architect. In this paper, I would like to propose a scaled prototype of architectural components that can reconfigure themselves into globally functional configurations based on feedback from locally distributed intelligence embedded inside the component. The project aims at demonstrating a design system that can respond to dynamically changing environment over time without imposing a static blueprint of the structure in a top-down manner from the outset of design processes. The control of the subunits are governed by the logic of a distributed system simulated by the use of multiple microcontrollers, and appropriate geometrical configurations will be computationally derived based on physical-environmental criteria such as solar radiation from various sensors and social-programmatic issues.

summary In the current design practice, new digital tools have emerged -visual- also called Infrastructures (Perkel, 2011) such as; Behance 2003, Pinterest 2009, Archdaily 2008, Instagram (2010) -to cite the most recognized in the creative field in Argentina-, which promote different opportunities and support the creative process and problem solving, making it easier for designers to find inspiring material through the Internet. However, very little is known about how these new practices affect professional work, how they themselves see it and the tensions they generate.This article will present the results of a general survey applied to expert designers as part of the first stage of the Doctoral Research project. Which investigates the behavior referred specifically to the use of visual platforms -visual social media- in order to understand, characterize, describe the use and involvement of them within the design process.

summary Architecture as a material practice is still predominantly based on design approaches that are characterized by a hierarchical relationship that prioritizes the generation of geometric information for the description of architectural systems and elements over material specific information. Thus, in the early design stage, the material’s innate characteristics and inherent capacities remain largely unconsidered. This is particularly evident in the way wood constructions are designed today. In comparison to most construction materials that are industrially produced and thus relatively homogeneous and isotropic, wood is profoundly different in that it is a naturally grown biological tissue with a highly differentiated material makeup . This paper will present research investigating how the transition from currently predominant modes of representational Computer Aided Design to algorithmic Computational Design allows for a significant change in employing wood’s complex anisotropic behaviour, resulting from its differentiated anatomical structure. In computational design, the relation between procedural formation, driving information, and ensuing form, enables the systematic integration of material information. This materially informed computational design processes will be explained through two research projects and the resultant prototype structures. The first project shows how an information feedback between material properties, system behaviour, the generative computational process, and robotic manufacturing allows for unfolding material-specific gestalt and tapping into the performative potential of wood. The second project focuses on embedding the unique material information and anatomical features of individual wooden elements in a continuous scanning, computational design and digital fabrication process, and thus introduces novel ways of integrating the biological variability and natural irregularities of wood in architectural design.

summary Considering mathematical knowledge as an artefact that mediates social activities in the world, this paper emphasizes the contribution of visual thinking to mathematics education and extends it to the learning of design activities, especially in architectural contexts. Results from a previous research paper on architectural design, which focused on the work of some contemporary architects in their day - to - day office activities, showed the relevance of drawing in architectural practice. These results aroused our interest in researching the mediating role of drawing and its structuring effects on creative processes and design activities in architecture.

summary Dwelling environment is not intelligent if it does not include the concept of home. The emergence of ICT allowed new functions as well as new ways of performing the traditional ones. The need to be online does not remove the need of privacy and to print the site. New ways of living require rethinking dwelling typology to flexibility. Intelligent environments will appear to elevate the sense of home, where security, autonomy, independence, comfort and interaction will be crucial to promote a more qualified life. Technological solutions can be driven in different directions: energy efficiency; lightening and temperature control, video surveillance, access control, etc., assistive environments; entertainment solutions like home theater and professional ones; all have in common to conceive the environment that matches user’s expectancies, where human interaction and social participation emerge as crucial requirements.

summary Digital technologies and processes have been used to generate architectural form for over two decades. Recent advances in digital technologies have allowed virtual digital environments to be constructed from physical movement. But can a bridge that connects the physical and virtual realms be developed? Can this, currently arbitrary form making be grounded in human activity and subsequently be integrated in to real time, space, and place. This research asks how space generated from the process of digital morphogenesis can be related to meaning beyond just the creation of form. Existing research asks how new form can be discovered, or what material and structural possibilities can be derived from form, through these morphological processes. The aim of this research project is to complete the loop, physical–virtual–physical, and to connect these digital processes to meaning through human activity. Its aim is to discover the consequences of generated spatial envelopes that are manipulated through digital morphogenesis and related to specific human activity, in the pursuit of possibilities for a digitally generated architecture that is socially engaged. This is not random form finding, wherein architecture tries to imitate biological processes or form, but form finding that is connected to a primary architectural concern, how is the architecture being used by humans.

Digital sequence simulation is used as an innovative tool to represent local activities, promote interventions and predict possible self-organization process in the future. This LMS is founded on Web 1.0 principles, however significant potential exists for engagement in Web 2.0 technologies to support learning and teaching in the design studio. A digitally enhanced design curriculum is discussed starting with html-based reflective folios in 2001, the use of blogs for reflection and resource creation and culminating in a Web 2.0 design studio based on social networking.

summary This paper critically reflects on computational methods of design in relation to social and environmental sustainability design research within contemporary and future tall building typology. It develops the author’s experience in large-scale building design practice into academic design research. The analysis of tall building typology is presented initially in the context of practice, followed by its development in an architectural master’s studio. The authors discuss their design research within a practice context that determined the question: what opportunities do computational processes offer to the conception of the tall building typology? Its transference to an educational research context allowed for the deeper exploration and development of a position on algorithmic and parametric methods, their relevance to the typology of the contemporary tall building and complex architectural scenarios.

summary We need to face challenging needs for the planning of sustainable future cities. New methods in urban simulation enhance significantly the early urban design phase. However, these promising methods will only be sustainable if they consider stakeholder participation from the very beginning. Therefore we propose a conceptual framework for the formulation of stakeholder requirements, which enables the iterative modification of an urban model inside participatory workshops. A special emphasis concentrates on environmental, social and economical factors. The requirements posed by the stakeholders are instantly transferred into urban design patterns. Each single pattern stands for a solution for a specific problem that is integrated and visualized in a procedural model. Our goal is to create a participatory process that takes advantages by the use of comprehensive urban design patterns. The results are integrated within an interactive procedural model that communicate the most important guidelines for the planning of sustainable future cities.

summary The concept maps built and shared on the internet through the CmapTools software resources were used in this exploratory study to follow and analyze the process of collaborative design in public school learning situations. The samples, taken from a Brazilian architectural graduate public school, were maps built in housing design projects developed in a digital environment. A constructivist approach supports the learning method in the use of the net environment for collaborative design of sustainable social housing. This is the base for further development of alternative methodological - theoretical approaches in the context of teaching sustainable design.

summary Nineteenth century models of education and learning which dictate that information is passed on from teacher to apprentice :abstract in a closed classroom environment seem archaic to us, especially since so much of our experiences are constructed in the outside world. Advances in ubiquitous and calm computing; social and immersive media; and urban locative technologies now allow for embedding complex information into physical environments and thus open up possibilities for teachers to set up carefully tagged student engagements in the real world—in “places” where real scientific phenomena are happening and technological artifacts can be engaged with. However these models are seldom successful because they are employed without an understanding of changing paradigms of learning. In this paper, we look at several new developments in learning models and use them to develop Just in Place learning, a novel framework which harnesses embodiment, place, and the potential of new locative technologies to augment traditional practice-based learning. Just in Place learning provides new potential for teachers and students to engage with information in “place,” exploit the urban environment as the new classroom, and the built environment as a portal for situated learning.

summary The purpose of this paper is to make apparent critical and theoretical aspects of the instrumentation of new technologies inside architectural processes. After twenty five years of “Choral Work” between architecture and post-structuralist philosophy superimposed together inside architectural processes, we now face a new technological era which seems to provide a new figure of authority by replacing logocentrism to mathematical logicocentrism. Everywhere, the “insemination” of computer by biogenetic algorithms and codification processes transform matter into a zoocentric paradigmatic system, which is supposed, by its internal “modulation,” to extend our potential of social dynamics into space. The goal of our demonstration will then be to examine new technical and theoretical strategies, in a way that the positivistic structure of computation can avoid a totalizing effect (that leading architecture under technological domination), but open up to an un-programmable (emergent) future far above “weaving” and calculated design.

summary Contemporary architecture can be seen as a dynamic system that causes change to its environment, or even as system that can modify itself. Interactive or responsive environments are not totally new to architecture however the possibilities in architecture have only been lightly referred to. This interdisciplinary design studio, with mechatronics engineers and architects collaborating, explored possible applications with real world equipment, sensors and knowledge. Development of responsive architecture requires architects to have a fluency in sensors, actuators and their control system programming. New potential application of technologies requires a re-framing of what that technology could do in a different social application. Together these issues challenged architecture and engineering students in a collaborative design environment. The resulting projects – kinetic architecture on control systems – challenge our understanding of what our built environment could be.

summary This paper present the process of virtual world’s adaptation to the vision of the real environment designed by the children of two primary Thai schools – a state school and a private school. The main point of the present paper is presentation of empirical research that is an analysis of four exercises – inquiries in which I asked children to draw the elements of their city and social life. The first task was to represent a route from home to school. Next, children were asked to draw the plan of their school, on which they had to differentiate the places dedicated to them, the common spaces and the spaces for another people. The last exercise done at school was related to the description of their family and their closest friends. At the end, the children were asked to draw an inside of their houses with the maximum of details. The results of representations of the daily life environments analysed and synthesised were rebuilt with the graphic computer tools. They will serve as the base of the conception of a 3D virtual village dedicated to the Thai children.

summary This paper highlights the use of ubiquitous technology to effectively enable location estimation in a system that promotes the display of surrounding information during a sightseeing cruise. The proposed system stands on the applicability of WiFi signal strength to grasp current location and on the use of web-tagged place information on the contents of riverfront places and its revival processes. The effectiveness of system in both technical and social aspects was verified promoting a river cruise in downtown Osaka in cooperation with volunteer citizens, experts and a cruise company. The accuracy provided by the WiFi location estimation presented some failures at certain points but was satisfactory enough to guarantee the display of nearby information at certain level. The proposed web navigation was testified positive by respondents, although additional adjustments of its design and improvements of the WiFi server were pointed out as necessary steps.

summary Data is ubiquitous in our cities. However, designing a knowledge network about our cities is an arduous task, given that data sensed cannot be used directly, human significance must be added. Adding human significance can be achieved via an automated “expert system (ES)” in which domain expert knowledge are stored in a knowledge-based repository. The domain expert knowledge is matched with the corresponding data to derive specific inference which can aid decision making for urban stakeholders.This requires amalgamation of various interdisciplinary techniques. This paper presents a survey of existing technologies in order to investigate the emerging issues surrounding the design of a live knowledge network for sustainable urban living. The maps and models of the existing infrastructure of our cities that include a wealth of information such as topography, layout, zoning, land use, transportation networks, public facilities, and resource network grids need to be integrated with real-time spatiotemporal information about the city. Public data in forms of archives and data streams as well as online data from the social network and the Web can be analyzed using data mining techniques. The domain experts need to interpret the results of data mining into knowledge that will augment the existing knowledge base and models of our cities. In addition to the analysis of archived and streamed data sources from the built environment, the emerging state-of-the-art Web 2.0 and mobile technologies are presented as the potential techniques to crowddesign a live urban knowledge network. Data modeling, data mining, crowdsourcing, and social intervention techniques are reviewed in this paper with examples from the related work and our own experiments.

summary Due to the complexity of parametric modeling, it has been the task of only a handful of experts in the design team to develop, build and modify parametric models. The complexity of parametric models increases exponentially with the number of design aspects it incorporates. The ambiguity of parametric models towards the modeled design intent explains that modifying the model is often isolated as an individual exercise. Developments in physical and ubiquitous computing, however, allow for collaboration and interaction with parametric models in other ways. Communication, coordination, and interaction between parametric models and the physical and social environment are the context of this paper. The paper describes some of the projects that were outcomes of the SmartGeometry 2010 workshops. These projects are dealing with mass collaboration using Twitter, tangible interfaces, parametric design and construction coordination and geometrical interpretation of datasets.
