summary Recently, prototyping enabled by CNC technology has found its way into design practice where concepts can be quickly and economically tested through multiple design iterations that closely approximate the realities of oneto- one construction. This has lead to the promise of renewed research in tectonics and constructional techniques where the traditional concepts of craft and the joint, that were once married to the hand, can be rediscovered through the agency of mass customization. If we apply the lineage of the trait—a representational and cognitive tool to marry complex form with the exigencies of construction—pedagogical approaches can be developed that extend the current interest in intricate surface, structural morphology and geometry towards a robust materiality rooted in componentry, the joint, and part-to-whole relationships. This paper will introduce several threads from the twentieth century that have informed these tendencies in contemporary design practice, emerging from the well spring of Viollet-le-Duc. The thesis is supported by undergraduate model-based research employing digital design and fabrication techniques.

summary This research investigates the relationship between efficiency, precision and tactile variation within architectural design and fabrication. A digitally driven design may be seamlessly precise and consistent but also feel sterile and distant from the human body. A materially driven design may be intimate and tactile but lack the accuracy needed to connect elements. Digital fabrication techniques are combined with hand craft material manipulations in search of a unique hybrid tectonic that merges connection accuracies with subtle but sensual divergences between repeating modules. Prototypes have been constructed at the object and inhabitable scale.

summary This paper will examine the recent transformations to architectural drawing that are occurring in the presence :abstract of information based drawing procedures and their potential for new fabrication methods. The mathematical organization of information has resulted in a more systemic, intricate, and variable approach toward making things— characteristics that have historically been associated with manual forms of craft. The shift from a geometric to an information based paradigm is allowing a wide range of industries to more easily converge. Consequently, a much broader range of interdisciplinary fabrication processes are now available to architects and designers. This confluence of numerical based machinery in other fields is providing new possibilities for architects to visualize data using a broader range of materials and techniques.

title Computational Environments with Multimodal Representations of Architectural Design Knowledge

summary This article discusses interaction between multimodal representations of architectural design knowledge, particularly focusing on relating explicit and implicit types of information. The aim of the presented research is to develop a computational environment that combines several modes of representation, including and integrating different forms of architectural design knowledge. Development of an interactive digital-models library and ontological model of architectural design factors are discussed, which are complementary in nature. In a time when BIM software is seen as embodiment of domain knowledge and the future medium of architectural design, this paper presents an interaction between ontological representation of architectural design knowledge and its embodiment in interactive models, thus focusing on the process of design and design space exploration. In the digital environments that we propose, representation of different formats of knowledge, such as visual, linguistic or numeric, are integrated with relational and procedural information, design rules, and characteristics. Interactive search and query based on contextual constraints, and parametric variation of the model based on the information received from ontology are the underlying drivers for design exploration and development.

title Assessing the Use of Advanced Daylight Simulation Modelling Tools in Enhancing the Student Learning Experience

summary In architecture schools, where the ‘studio culture’ lies at the heart of students’ learning, taught courses, particularly technology ones, are often seen as secondary or supplementary units. Successful delivery of such courses, where students can act effectively, be motivated and engaged, is a rather demanding task requiring careful planning and the use of various teaching styles. A recent challenge that faces architecture education today, and subsequently influences the way technology courses are being designed, is the growing trend in practice towards environmentally responsive design and the need for graduates with new skills in sustainable construction and urban ecology (HEFCE’s consultation document, 2005). This article presents the role of innovative simulation modelling tools in the enhancement of the student learning experience and professional development. Reference is made to a teaching practice that has recently been applied at Portsmouth School of Architecture in the United Kingdom and piloted at Deakin University in Australia. The work focuses on the structure and delivery of one of the two main technology units in the second year architecture programme that underwent two main phases of revision during the academic years 2009/10 and 2010/11. The article examines the inclusion of advanced daylight simulation modelling tools in the unit programme, and measures the effectiveness of enhancing its delivery as a key component of the curriculum on the student learning experience. A main objective of the work was to explain whether or not the introduction of a simulation modelling component, and the later improvement of its integration with the course programme and assessment, has contributed to a better learning experience and level of engagement. Student feedback and the grade distribution pattern over the last three academic years were collected and analyzed. The analysis of student feedback on the revised modelling component showed a positive influence on the learning experience and level of satisfaction and engagement. An improvement in student performance was also recorded over the last two academic years and following the implementation of new assessment design.

summary This paper examines what is appropriate and valuable to include in architectural education in light of changing representational conventions and techniques. Architecture finds itself at a unique moment in time where the means of production for the profession, and indeed the entire discipline, are transforming and fundamentally undermine the existing models of education, production and understanding. The threat to architecture education is that architecture becomes learned techniques rather than a way of operating within a body of knowledge that grows and responds to its context. These digital media processes offer contemporary education new and challenging ways to communicate ideas, sometimes subverting the imperative for “drawing” as the representation does not refer to information in the abstract, but IS the information quite literally.

summary This paper chronicles the implementation of state - of - the - art virtual set technology through the teaching of an independent study course at Ball State University. The paper describes the use of independent study formats as a means to initiate teaching of emergent media that does not fit neatly into specific academic silos. In addition to its learning potential this technology offers a new practice area for architects and designers that have an understanding of communication studies and space design at the crossroads of imagination. The creative realm for new emergent media and markets requires new teaching formats, opportunities and challenges for future implementation.

summary The paper presents a novel digital 3D GIS web-based system entirely founded on Google Earth, built to offer a deep insight into Palladio's opera for restitution of its architectural surveys, reconstruction for historical reasons, analysis for structural and other options, and assembly and presentation of all certified Palladian documentation.The development of the application follows the philosophy of visual computing and it is based on an architectural knowledge representation.The information system is conceived as a typical Rich Internet Application and it is based on the digitalization of the complete Palladian corpus documentation implemented by the Centro Internazionale di Studi di Architettura Andrea Palladio (CISAAP).The 3D geodatabase system is, actually, in use at the Centro as the Palladian information system for researchers and in two expositions at Barbaran da Porto Palace in Vicenza, and at Villa Poiana at Poiana Maggiore, where is widely used by tourists for virtual visits to Palladian buildings.

summary Online communities use a “wall” as a place to articulate non - synchronic communication among its members. Such a place, however, poorly explores the metaphor of the wall as a means of enhancing online experiences. Online “walls” do not explore or challenge the richness of a real wall, and they do not embrace new experiences that are only possible in the digital world. In order to tackle these issues, this paper analyzes three movie scenes where the everyday perception of the wall is altered by madness and estrangement. Finally, the paper suggests how these perceptions of the wall could be integrated into interfaces using touch screen technologies.

summary The Attractive City Generator is an interactive installation with which users can create or rearrange virtual cities by placing and moving physical objects. Through the set of simple inputs that the users provide and which represent city areas, landscapes or landmarks, the ACG is capable of creating complex and growing cities. In addition, a plethora of factual feedback on these cities is calculated. Becoming physically involved enhances the learningprocess and increases the user’s interest. The users are drawn to the colourful and simple interface. Due to the practical feedback that the city returns, the users can feel more attached to the city they have created. A dynamic dialogue is formed between the city and its creators, that involves the wishes of the users versus the needs of the virtual city, the practical interaction on the table versus the theoretical calculations taking place inside the computer, the physical input versus the digital output.

summary The recent developments in digital technologies and contemporary design tools are initiating new approaches of form-finding based on parametric development of multiple geometries with simultaneous consideration of various aspects. This paper focuses on the use of advanced parametric CAD systems and reformulated construction logics to enhance the potential and possibilities of form finding processes. This approach is exemplified through the “Greenhouse Trauttmansdorff project”. The project demonstrates a form finding approach which is based on defined parameters that not only fulfil aesthetic and functional aspects, but simultaneously take structural properties and the resulting sun shading behaviour into account. We will explore within this paper how – next to the functional and contextual building requirements – required illumination levels inside the greenhouse create a feedback loop between the structural system and its cladding system.

summary The following paper deals with a performance-driven morphogenetic design task to improve the conditions of room acoustics, using as a case study the material laboratory of the School of Architecture at Federico Santa Maria University of Technology. Combining contemporary Parametric Modeling techniques and a Performance- Based approach, an automatic generative system was produced. This system generated a modular acoustic ceiling based on Helmholtz Resonators. To satisfy sound absorption requirements, acoustic knowledge was embedded within the system. It iterates through a series of design sub-tasks from Acoustic Simulation to Digital Fabrication, searching for a suitable design solution. The internal algorithmic complexity of the design process has been explored through this case study. Although it is focused on an acoustic component, the proposed design methodology can influence other experiences in Parametric Design.

summary The research presented in this paper investigates ways of providing better design applications for technologies in the field of Urban Digital Media (UDM). The work takes an emergent approach, evolving a design strategy through the early engagement of stakeholders. The paper discusses research in a design-led creative intersection between media technology, culture and the arts in the built environment. The case study discusses opportunities for the enhancement of a university campus experience, learning culture and community, through the provision of an integrated digital presence within campus architecture and urban spaces. It considers types of information architecture (Manovich, 2001) and designs for use in urban settings to create communication-rich, advanced and interactive designed spaces (Haeusler, 2009). The presented research investigates how to create a strategy for display technologies and networked communications to transform and augment the constructed reality of the built environment, allowing new formats of media activity.

summary As issues of sustainability gain traction for architects, methodologies for designing, analyzing, and calibrating design solutions have emerged as essential areas of research and development. A number of approaches have been pursued with regard to embedding data into the design process, most fall into one of two approaches to research. The first approach is to mediate environmental impact at the level of applied technology; the second alters building methods and material construction, generating efficient energy use. However, few approaches deal with the crafting of relationships between information and performance on an architectural level. We will examine an approach focused on understanding how crafting relationships between information and design can move architecture towards achieving sustainability. In developing this approach, we created a data-driven design methodology spanning from design inception to construction. Data-driven models, common in the fields of natural science, offer a method to generate and test a multiplicity of responsive solutions. By contextualizing the solutions generated, we were able design though a set of specific and controlled responses rather than as a singular solution. Information utilization requires a new kind of craft that moves beyond instances into relationships and offers performance sensitive issues in design a focused trajectory. We applied this method to the research and development of a responsive shading structure built in conjunction with a thermal testing lab for two test locations – Austin, Texas (Figure. 1 and 2) and Munich, Germany. The following paper chronicles the design and construction at the Texas site over an academic semester.

summary This paper presents an ongoing research on computer supported collaborative design carried out by the ARIAM-LAREA laboratory at the Superior National School of Architecture of Paris-LaVillette. The aim of this research is to analyze computer mediated architectural design practices in order to identify the specific “operations of conception”. Two observations of architectural collaborative design supported by computer tool called “Studio Digital Collaboratif” have been conducted: one concerning collaboration between architects, in laboratory, the other one between architects and engineers in a real situation of design. Our analysis use two concepts to explain the collaborative conception in architecture: classes of operation of conception and operation of conception. They permit to identify the elementary operations of conception and pragmatic operations of collaboration. According to the first results it seems that classes of operation of conception are shared but operations of conception seem to be unshared.

summary Didactic material in digital format is being produced in different contexts focused on similar themes. The efforts of such production are not being optimized. This paper describes the structuring process of a system of collaborative production of didactic material aimed at broadening geometric vocabulary and repertory in architecture. Established material regarding this theme is analyzed through the concept of learning objects. Efforts concentrate on the establishment of a taxonomy to characterize these objects, seeking to make the search and selective recovery of these objects easier. An environment has been made available for sharing, discussion and validation of this material, outlining a methodology for the establishment of the proposed system.
