summary Due to a general freedom in the architectural design process, a wide range of possible alternatives exist; although building-volume designs must also continue to meet numerous, possibly conflicting design requirements originating from various related disciplines. This research addresses problems associated with missing quantitative design aids during the early design stages. It aims to provide designers with solutions that provide optimal cost-effectiveness. The demonstrated building-volume optimisation model minimises life cycle costs by determining optimal-volume dimensions, floor number, building orientation and ‘window / wall’ opening ratios while satisfying site and building code regulations and design constraints. Results indicate an optimal solution can be found within a practical timeframe. The proposed, novel approach to introduce cost objectives into building-volume design provides designers with a valuable decision support tool in a design domain that is known to be complex owing to multiple design criteria and constraint influences.

summary This paper presents a methodological interactive design approach within which structure is integrated into tall building form development. The approach establishes a synergy between generative and analytical tools to allow for parallel interaction of the formal and structural design considerations during the conceptual design phase. An integration of the associative modeling system, Grasshopper, and the structural analysis tool, ETABS was established, and a bi-directional feedback link between the two tools was initiated to guide the iterative from generation process. A design scenario is presented in this paper to demonstrate how the parametric generation and alteration of architectural form can be carried out based on instant feedback on the structural performance. Utilizing such a tool, architects can not only develop improved understanding of structural needs, but also realize their formal ideas structurally and materially.

summary We present a simulation platform to evaluate procedurally generated 3d city models with a set of agents representing urban street actors and pedestrians towards greenhouse gas emissions from transportation. Our aim is to give architects and urban planners an empiric tool to analyze, predict and quantify traffic fluctuations over time, and define the number of occupants, individual traffic and public transport in a city. In this project we show that the allocation of functions within a city is an important factor for the appearanceof traffic. The occupant’s decisions where they want to go are defined by the allocation of functions – and the distance defines the mode of transportation. We simulate the decision processes and gain information about the path, the mode of transportation, and the emissions they produce, and individual experiences like stress and effort. The autonomous driving cars are equipped with an acceleration based emission model allowing us to evaluate the inpact of jammed streets on the emission of cars.

summary This paper shares KPF Cloud Tools, a platform for using Rhino Compute (McNeel’s REST API for RhinoCommon and Grasshopper) to run a library of Grasshopper tools through a cloud server via a Rhino plugin with a procedurally generated user interface, making it quick to deploy new tools (Robert McNeel & Associates 2010). We describe the professional challenges that the KPF Cloud Tools platform solves, document the technical implementation of the platform, and illustrate its benefit through the impact on a large architectural practice.

summary Considering mathematical knowledge as an artefact that mediates social activities in the world, this paper emphasizes the contribution of visual thinking to mathematics education and extends it to the learning of design activities, especially in architectural contexts. Results from a previous research paper on architectural design, which focused on the work of some contemporary architects in their day - to - day office activities, showed the relevance of drawing in architectural practice. These results aroused our interest in researching the mediating role of drawing and its structuring effects on creative processes and design activities in architecture.

summary The research presented in this paper investigates ways of providing better design applications for technologies in the field of Urban Digital Media (UDM). The work takes an emergent approach, evolving a design strategy through the early engagement of stakeholders. The paper discusses research in a design-led creative intersection between media technology, culture and the arts in the built environment. The case study discusses opportunities for the enhancement of a university campus experience, learning culture and community, through the provision of an integrated digital presence within campus architecture and urban spaces. It considers types of information architecture (Manovich, 2001) and designs for use in urban settings to create communication-rich, advanced and interactive designed spaces (Haeusler, 2009). The presented research investigates how to create a strategy for display technologies and networked communications to transform and augment the constructed reality of the built environment, allowing new formats of media activity.

summary The paper proposes integrated design and building systems for the provision of sustainable customized housing. It advances previous work by applying a methodology to generate these systems from vernacular precedents. The methodology is based on the use of shape grammars to derive and encode a contemporary system from the precedents. The combined set of rules can be applied to generate housing solutions tailored to specific user and site contexts. The provision of housing to shelter the population affected by the 2010 Haiti earthquake illustrates the application of the methodology. A computer implementation is currently under development in C# using the BIM platform provided by Revit. The world experiences a sharp increase in population and a strong urbanization process. These phenomena call for the development of effective means to solve the resulting housing deficit. The response of the informal sector to the problem, which relies mainly on handcrafted processes, has resulted in an increase of urban slums in many of the big cities, which lack sanitary and spatial conditions. The formal sector has produced monotonous environments based on the idea of mass production that one size fits all, which fails to meet individual and cultural needs. We propose an alternative approach in which mass customization is used to produce planed environments that possess qualities found in historical settlements. Mass customization, a new paradigm emerging due to the technological developments of the last decades, combines the economy of scale of mass production and the aesthetics and functional qualities of customization. Mass customization of housing is defined as the provision of houses that respond to the context in which they are built. The conceptual model for the mass customization of housing used departs from the idea of a housing type, which is the combined result of three systems (Habraken, 1988) -- spatial, building system, and stylistic -- and it includes a design system, a production system, and a computer system (Duarte, 2001). In previous work, this conceptual model was tested by developing a computer system for existing design and building systems (Benr__s and Duarte, 2009). The current work advances it by developing new and original design, building, and computer systems for a particular context. The urgent need to build fast in the aftermath of catastrophes quite often overrides any cultural concerns. As a result, the shelters provided in such circumstances are indistinct and impersonal. However, taking individual and cultural aspects into account might lead to a better identification of the population with their new environment, thereby minimizing the rupture caused in their lives. As the methodology to develop new housing systems is based on the idea of architectural precedents, choosing existing vernacular housing as a precedent permits the incorporation of cultural aspects and facilitates an identification of people with the new housing. In the Haiti case study, we chose as a precedent a housetype called “gingerbread houses”, which includes a wide range of houses from wealthy to very humble ones. Although the proposed design system was inspired by these houses, it was decided to adopt a contemporary take. The methodology to devise the new type was based on two ideas: precedents and transformations in design. In architecture, the use of precedents provides designers with typical solutions for particular problems and it constitutes a departing point for a new design. In our case, the precedent is an existing housetype. It has been shown (Duarte, 2001) that a particular housetype can be encoded by a shape grammar (Stiny, 1980) forming a design system. Studies in shape grammars have shown that the evolution of one style into another can be described as the transformation of one shape grammar into another (Knight, 1994). The used methodology departs takes off from these ideas and it comprises the following steps (Duarte, 2008): (1) Selection of precedents, (2) Derivation of an archetype; (3) Listing of rules; (4) Derivation of designs; (5) Cataloguing of solutions; (6) Derivation of tailored solution.

summary This study examines the integration of space syntax into digital heritage practices to address key challenges in preserving historic urban landscapes. The research focuses on three primary issues: the lack of social and cultural integration, low user engagement, and insufficient interdisciplinary collaboration. The research question explores how space syntax can enhance the preservation of both spatial and cultural characteristics in heritage management. A systematic literature review was conducted across 5,694 documents published between 1983 and 2024, utilizing the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses methodology for rigorous data collection. The results reveal a substantial increase in relevant publications, with a 64% rise in the 1990s to 2000s and a 498% increase from 2000 to 2010. Geographic analysis shows significant contributions from Italy (16.6%) and China (13.9%). Keyword and thematic analyses highlight the growing intersection of space syntax with urban heritage preservation and cultural management. Key findings include the ability of space syntax to improve environmental management (r = 0.62, p < 0.01), digital modeling accuracy (85% by 2020), and community. The research advances heritage conservation by integrating space syntax with digital practices, proposing a framework for sustainable urban development with future focus on real-time monitoring and sustainable planning.

summary Aggregates are defined as large amounts of elements being in loose contact. In architecture they are mainly known as an additive in concrete construction. Relatively few examples use aggregates in their unbound form as an architectural material system in their own right. The investigation of potential architectural applications however is both a very relevant and unexplored branch of design research. Loose granular systems are inherently different from other architectural construction systems. One of the most decisive distinctions lies in the way information on those granular architectural systems is being generated, processed, and integrated into the design process. Several mathematical methods have been developed to numerically model granular behaviour. However, the need and also the potential of using so-called ,material’ computation is specifically relevant with aggregates, as much of their behaviour is still not being described in these mathematical models. This paper will present the current outcome of a doctorate research on aggregate architectures with a focus on information processing in machine and material computation. In the first part, it will introduce definitions of material and machine computation. In the second part, the way machine computation is employed in modelling granulates will be introduced. The third part will review material computation in granular systems. In the last part, a concrete example of an architectural aggregate model will be explained with regard to the given definition of material computation. Conclusively a comparative overview between material and machine computation in aggregate architectures will be given and further areas of development will be outlined.

summary Textiles and architecture share a long, intertwined history from the earliest enclosures to contemporary high-tech tensile structures. In the Four Elements of Architecture, Gottfried Semper (2010) posited wickerwork and carpet enclosures to be the essential origins of architectural space. More recently, architectural designers are capitalizing on the characteristics of textiles that are difficult or impossible to reproduce with other material systems: textiles are pliable, scalable, and materially efficient. As industrial knitting machines join robotic systems in architecture schools with fabrication- forward agendas, much of the recent developments in textile-based projects make use of knitting. In this paper, we propose an alternative textile technique, lacemaking, for architectural fabrication. We present a method for translating traditional lacemaking techniques to an architectural scale and explore its relative advantages over other textiles. In particular, we introduce bobbin lace and describe its steps both in traditional production and at an architectural scale. We use the unique properties of bobbin lace to form workflows for fabrication and computational analysis. An example of computational analysis demonstrates the ability to optimize lace-based designs towards particular labor objectives. We discuss opportunities for automation and consider the broader implications of understanding a material system relative to the cost of labor to produce designs using it.

The result is the design of a prototype—an interactive installation that projects the information sent from cell phones via Bluetooth and text messaging. This content can be transformed by users through a distance sensor.

summary The activity of metadata assignment for the cataloging of an architectural design demands, more than time, a process of reflection about the production of architecture. Thus, in this activity seeks a didactic strategy for teaching/learning architectural design, which is interpreted as a mechanism of meta - cognition. Exercises are promoted in which the students of architecture reflect about their own production of designs, assigning key words to characterize them, initially without structured references for this characterization but later establishing a taxonomy of available architectural domain. The results point to the validation of the strategy, demonstrating the potential of the exercise.

summary This paper presents a formal framework for utilising different digital design and rapid prototyping technologies in design education. The framework has been applied in a studio created for a mixed cohort of tertiary students from architecture and industrial design. A comprehensive survey was conducted at the end of the course as a means for evaluation, and for student self-reflection. This paper reports the experiences in conducting the studio and the student perceptions of their design processes and outcomes whilst confronting these tools. The paper provides insight into the application of digital design and rapid prototyping tools in design education, supported by a qualitative analysis of the survey result.

title Associative Spatial Networks in Architectural Design - Artificial Cognition of Space using Neural Networks with Spectral Graph Theory

summary This paper looks at a new way of employing unsupervised neural networks in the design of an architectural system. The method described involves looking the whole lifecycle of a building and its coupling with its environment. Techniques such as dimensionality reduction, it is argued, are well suited to architectural design whereby complex problems are commonplace. An example project is explored - that of an exhibition space where multiple ephemeral exhibitions are housed at any given time. A modified growing neural gas algorithm is employed in order cognize similarities of spaces whose nature are not known a priori. By utilising the machine, a coupling between the building system and the users of the space is explored throughout the whole project life of the design.

summary Based on visualisations of data obtained from field observations, this paper describes and discusses how a group of ten undergraduate students of architecture negotiated their ways through the tutorials of a design studio lasting 17 weeks. The main question guiding this empirical study is how the initially prescribed linear, stage-based framework of the design studio relates to design processes as experienced by participating students and as observed by myself as tutor and participant observer. Visualisations of tutorial observations show that instead of proceeding from one stage to the next sequentially, students tend to engage in continuous and parallel re-consideration of almost all aspects of their work. This results in a process that can be described as a cumulative and layered process, and illustrated as ‘fan’-shaped diagrams. The role of the design stages initially scheduled in the detailed studio brief seems to be to gradually introduce students to increasingly advanced and challenging project scopes rather than to enforce sequential design steps.
