title Assessing innovation in hybrid designs using shape grammars
source Proceedings of the 16th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia / The University of Newcastle, Australia 27-29 April 2011, pp. 545-554
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2011.545
summary Al-kazzaz et al (2010) described hybrid adaption technique to generate innovative designs from heterogeneous precedents using shape grammars. An evaluation of the degree of innovation in the hybrid designs gave feedback to grammar users before and after applying a rule. Innovation was assessed using variables derived from the internal structure of the grammar such as: the number of antecedents in the corpus having the same rule; the number of rules in a subclass rule set having the same geometry; etc. However, the validity of the innovation assessment was unclear and the use of the feedback measures was not demonstrated. Accordingly, this study aims to verify the credibility of the innovation measures and to identify the independent variables that a user can control to achieve a significant impact on each innovation measure as a dependent variable.

summary This paper describes a new methodology of deriving innovative hybrid designs using shape grammars of heterogeneous designs. The method is detailed within three phases of shape grammars: analysis, synthesis and evaluation. In the analysis phase, the research suggests that original rules of each design component are grouped in subclass rule sets to facilitate rule choices. Additionally, adding new hybrid rules to original rules expands the options available to the grammar user. In the synthesis phase, the research adopts state labels and markers to drive the design generation. The former is implemented with a user guide grammar to ensure hybridity in the generated design, while the latter aims to ensure feasible designs. Lastly evaluation criteria are added to measure the degree of innovation of the hybrid designs. This paper describes the derivation of hybrid minaret designs from a corpus of heterogeneous traditional minaret designs.

summary This paper shows the first results of a prototype implementation of a generative urban design tool. This implementation will form part of a design support tool for a GIS based platform defined to formulate, generate and evaluate urban designs. These three goals, formulation, generation and evaluation are integrated by connecting three modules developed individually for each goal. In this paper we focus on the implementation of the generation module showing a prototype developed on the Integrated Development Environment (IDE) of AutoCAD Civil 3D. This implementation attempts to encode the design moves of the urban planner into design patterns supported on grammar formalisms which allow for design synthesis and design exploration in the field of urban design.

summary This paper outlines a digital design workflow, utilized by the authors, which actively links the geometry platforms being utilized by architects with tools for structural analysis, design, form-finding, and optimization. This workflow leads to an accelerated generation and transfer of information to help guide and inform the design process. The engineering team is thus empowered to augment the architect’s design by ensuring that the design team is conscious of the structural implications of design decisions throughout the design process. A crucial element of this design process has been the dynamic linkage of parametric geometry models with structural analysis and design tools. This reduces random errors in model generation and allows more time for critical analysis evaluation. However, the ability to run a multitude of options in a compressed time frame has led to ever increasing data sets. A key component of this structural engineering workflow has become the visualization and rigorous interpretation of the data generated by the analysis process. The authors have explored visualization techniques to distill the complex analysis results into graphics that are easily discernable by all members of the design team.

title Abstractions for information based design
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 8 - no. 3, pp. 233-256
summary This paper discusses how live linkages between parametric geometry, structural analysis and optimization can be leveraged to explore an architectural massing from different perspectives of optimum assuming a set of cost and value characteristics. Broad performance measures such as program area, cladding surface and structural quantities were computed for each geometry variation and collected. Optimums from different perspectives (structure, developer, designer) were extracted for each height category and compared. To further inform and engage stakeholders, a variety of visualization and filtering techniques have been implemented. These new techniques and associated distillation of data aids the design team in understanding the design space. A script based approach towards geometry and data management has led to a shift towards active option evaluation and a more interactive approach to form exploration. A generic workflow for structural analysis, design and optimization has been implemented and this ability to engineer at a greater velocity will move the design profession towards a more collaborative and information based design environment.

summary Real time walkthrough is a valuable resource, especially in the early stages of the design process. Assessing how shadows and reflections behave enables architects to make better choices regarding materials, geometry and lighting. Traditional methods do not offer daylight simulations in real time, whereas interactive visualization requires large computational resources to allow an evaluation of behavior of light in architectural space. This project researched virtual environments that permit the real - time generation of interactive scenes that simulate natural light algorithms modeled. The goal of this is to meet the needs of architects when evaluating the changes of a dynamic and synchronous project.

summary Recent studies in contemporary architecture have developed a variety of parameters regarding the information paradigm which have consequently brought different results and techniques to the process of architectural design. Thus, the emergence of an ecological thinking environment and its involvement in scientific matters has determined links moving beyond the conventional references that rely on information. It is characterized as an interconnected and dynamic interaction, concerning both a theoretical background and providing, at the same time, appropriate means in the architectural design process (Saggio, 2007, 117). The study is based on the assumption that Information Theory leads into a bidirectional model which is based on interaction. According to it, I want to emphasize the presence of the human body in both the architectural creation process and the use of architectural space. The aim of my study, is consequently an evaluation of how this corporeal view related to the human body, can be organized and interlinked in the process of architectural design. My hypothesis relies on the interactive process between the information paradigm and the ecological one. The integration of this corporeal view influences the whole process of architectural design, improving abilities and knowledge (Figure 1). I like to refer to this as a missing ring, as it occurs within a circular vital system with all its elements closely linked to each other and in particular, emphasizes architecture as a living being.

summary The paper reports on a pilot study of how a virtual city can be enhanced by interlinking elements of the 3D city model with the city’s collective memory represented in various digital formats. A particular street called Jalan Malioboro in Yogyakarta Indonesia has been modeled and hosted on Google Earth. Through the questionnaires returned by the participating students, we also investigate how collective memory enhanced virtual city (CREATI) could help learners to achieve goals of a particular course. The study shows that CREATI helps students to analyze the task given by providing more historical information related to the street. However it also needs further refinement and evaluation by introducing more interactive features such as enabling students to upload their own design proposals and to post additional information related to the buildings or places.

summary This paper presents an assessment of a selection software tools for urban design confronting their capabilities with the goals of the CityInduction research project. The goal of this paper is the assessment of existing platforms for computer aided urban design to select one as the basis for implementing the urban design model proposed in the CityInduction project. This model includes three sub-models that support the formulation of design programs from contextual information, the exploration of designs solutions through a grammarbased generative approach, and the validation of designs against the program through the use of evaluation tools. To each of these sub-models corresponds a module in the envisioned platform and so, existing platforms are assessed in terms of their ability to support the implementation of each module. The current goal is a proof-of-concept implementation, but the final goal is the development of a complete platform for supporting urban design.

title Non-Linear Architectural Design Process
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 8 - no. 1, 41-54
summary The introduction of the computer to the architectural design process have facilitated the possibility to examine a large number of design alternatives by allowing continuous variation between pre defined constraints. However, for the most part, evaluation and comparison of the alternatives is still handled manually in a linear fashion by the designer. This paper introduces a different approach to the architectural design process, which calls for a multithreaded or a non-linear design process. In a non-linear design process design directions and alternatives are generated, presented and evaluated simultaneously, and in real time. As an example for a non-linear design process the Generative Performance Oriented Design model and software tool (GenPOD) are presented and discussed. Moving towards non-linear modes of design arguably increases design creativity by allowing generating and evaluating a greater number and variation of design alternatives.

title A framework to integrate generative design techniques for enhancing design automation
source Proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia / Hong Kong 7-10 April 2010, pp. 127-136
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2010.127
summary This paper presents and demonstrates a computational framework that facilitates the integration of different generative design techniques to enhance design automation. The framework is based on the evaluation and comparison of four main generative design algorithms. Effectiveness of the framework is demonstrated through an example scenario. Compared to most existing generative design systems that are based on one of the techniques, which often bias the generative design process in a certain direction, new generative design systems by applying the proposed framework will provide the trigger at each stage as demonstrated in the example scenario for the designer to perceive the emergent designs from different viewpoints. This advantage will enhance design generation and automation by assisting the designer in making more informed decisions in understanding and selecting the suitable generative techniques for different design needs.

summary Nowadays, a large set of involved planning parties are heavily demanded with the definition of holistic in kind requirement specifications for urban planning sites – so called future cities. However, the resulting amountof specifications for a specific building project poses a great challenge to designers and planners especially when it comes to include this information into their design proposals for a sustainable urban development. These design performance criteria are traditionally expressed in textual and numerical planning guidelines and which are making it difficult to establish a comprehensive and holistic view onto the domain itself. Therefore we present in this paper a design guide visualization method to overcome this situation for the evaluation of design specification and urban layouts in a qualitative and quantitative manner.

summary This paper reports the initial development of a constructive system based on interlocked boards manufactured through digital fabrication. The system is based on the elaboration of grooves in regular pieces by a laser - cutter or CNC - machines to develop self - supported configurations. A parametric design system has been designed and several material models and full - scale prototypes have been built. Although the system requires evaluation of its structural features, production and maintenance, it offers novel building alternatives. This experience set up an innovative way of performing experimental research to develop new products and possible designs.

summary We discuss the use of multiple design representations to enhance decision making at the early stages of design. Our particular interest is in the way in which context can be extended by two interrelated approaches: (1) the incorporation of the temporal; and (2) through the concurrent evaluation of qualitative representations and quantitative information. Outcomes from a practice survey are used to formulate approaches to the use of mixed reality (MR) technology that reflect design-specific modes of working. We propose two approaches – studio MR and site MR – reflecting the distinction between the act of design and the process of a design review. The implementation of a studio MR application and illustrative design project are presented.

summary This paper anticipates the use of 3-D data for the environmental analysis of cities, aiming to provide useful tools for urban designers. The extraction of urban environmental quality (UEQ) indicators from 3-D information using innovative tools is presented. We will introduce our recent research about the implementation of computational tools for the analysis, evaluation and design of the urban space and compare results that can be obtained with different data sources. In particular, we are going to present the advantages of urban models generated from LiDAR data, by showing the case-study analysis of the measurement and quantification of urban vegetation indicators. Results show that the limitation to solar accessibility on roofs is not relevant for the case-study area. Moreover, a set of environmental and morphological indicators could inform urban designers for decision making processes about the distribution of vegetation inside the urban fabric.

title Education to practice to ecology: A review and preliminary evaluation of a new architectural design curriculum using computational design tools and bamboo in Haiti
source SIGraDi 2020 [Proceedings of the 24th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISSN: 2318-6968] Online Conference 18 - 20 November 2020, pp. 643-651
summary There is an absence of lightweight, sustainable construction materials in contemporary Haitian construction, a fact highlighted in the disproportionate loss of life in the 2010 Port-au-Prince earthquake. Between 2014 and 2017 the authors delivered a series of architectural design workshops in Haiti to raise awareness and develop design skills for bamboo using computational design tools. This paper provides a review of these workshops and a preliminary evaluation from surveys conducted with the course participants. Results showed architectural education had changed perceptions of bamboo and showed potential positive ecological impact due to subsequent reforestation activities instigated by participants. Weaknesses were in the lack of subsequent use of parametric modelling software. Bamboo material knowledge and a new architectural design methodology have been most relevant to their professional or academic work.

summary Energy performance modelling can provide insights into the efficiency and sustainability of commercial buildings, and also the achievement of certification standards such as USGBC LEED. However, the results from the modelling must be validated via a post-construction evaluation, which quantifies any discrepancies between the predicted energy usage and the actual energy consumed. In this study, an existing office building was examined to test how well the model predicts energy usage. The results from the model were compared with the actual usage of gas and electricity over two years (2010-2011). Our study showed a 123% higher gas usage, and a 36% lower electricity, compared with the simulation. This difference presents that occupant behaviour and building construction practices have significant impact on the energy usage of a building. For instance, the large discrepancy among gas usage is due to the office building’s thermal envelope, which identifies the spots at which heat leaks out of the building, thereby forcing the heating unit to work more. Additionally, the post occupancy evaluation study identified that indoor environmental conditions impact on energy consumption of the building.

summary As the title ‘Function Follows Performance in Evolutionary Computational Processing’ suggests, this paper explores the potentials of employing multiple design and evaluation criteria within one processing model in order to account for a number of performative parameters desired within varied architectural projects. At the core lies the formulation of a methodology that is based upon the idea of human and computational selection in accordance with pre-defined performance criteria that can be adapted to different requirements by the mere change of parameter input in order to reach location specific design solutions.
