summary The creation of a 3D city model is usually a very time-consuming process and due to the constant development of the city it also has to be updated accordingly. One of the problems with large 3D city models is that they contain a huge amount of data that has to be stored and processed when it is used. The storage and management of the models are therefore a very important issue. The management issue is often that many people are collaborating and working on the 3D city model at the same time and are located at physically different locations. In this paper we present an application for collaboration, maintenance and storing of 3D city models using an open-source subversion controlled system. It is a client server based with a file-based structure on the client side. This system is not as complex as the Oracle database and is not limited to a specific file format. We have integrated the revision control system into our VR application but it is also possible to have external revision control using a default file manager, such as Explorer in Microsoft Windows. The system has been tested in three different virtual reality projects, all applied to urban planning.

title Agent based Emission Evaluation of Traffic in Dynamic City Models

summary We present a simulation platform to evaluate procedurally generated 3d city models with a set of agents representing urban street actors and pedestrians towards greenhouse gas emissions from transportation. Our aim is to give architects and urban planners an empiric tool to analyze, predict and quantify traffic fluctuations over time, and define the number of occupants, individual traffic and public transport in a city. In this project we show that the allocation of functions within a city is an important factor for the appearanceof traffic. The occupant’s decisions where they want to go are defined by the allocation of functions – and the distance defines the mode of transportation. We simulate the decision processes and gain information about the path, the mode of transportation, and the emissions they produce, and individual experiences like stress and effort. The autonomous driving cars are equipped with an acceleration based emission model allowing us to evaluate the inpact of jammed streets on the emission of cars.

summary Reconstruction work on more than twenty synagogues in Vienna has been ongoing for more than a decade. The fact that these sacred buildings no longer exist is a pivotal aspect in this undertaking. Research revealed archived material, however, which served as reliable basis for the reconstruction work. The paper focuses on the possibilities and limits of this exploration and discusses the long-term options for handling 3D models and the dissemination of results to a large audience. The appropriate illustration of spatial contexts is another aspect that has been explored. The publication of results in the form of a city guide is in line with the objective of conveying the reconstruction results to a large audience.

summary This article intends to highlight and analyze the main differences between visitors’ spacial experiences of the panoramas of the old rotundas in Rio de Janeiro, offering the possibility of “re - constructing” them digitally. To do this it is necessary to draw up three - dimensional digital models to search for a full understanding of its internal and external spatial systems based on the descriptions of visitors and the interpretation of prints and original drawings of panoramas by 19th century architects.

summary Tools and technologies are developing to help the simulation of our cities for visualization, analytical and information modeling purposes. In this paper the authors, as well as evaluating different applications for 3D GIS solutions, are investigating various stakeholder requirements in relation to the Virtual NewcastleGateshead (VNG) project. This case study shares findings of a working group set up specifically to explore the options for 3D-GIS integration for the VNG project, and will focus on issues relating to data exchange, CityGML, data accessibility and interoperability in piloting Autodesk LandXplorer.

summary Our contention is that the city is a rich collection of urban micro-ecologies in continuous formation that include information types outside the traditional boundaries of urban design, city planning, and architecture and their native data fields. This paper discusses working with non-standard urban data types of a highly granular nature, and the analytical possibilities and technical issues associated with their aggregation, through a post professional masters level research studio project run in 2008. Opportunities for novel urban analysis arising from this process are discussed in the context of typical urban planning and analysis systems and locative media practices. This research bought to light specific technical and conceptual issues arising from the combination of processes including sources of data, data collection methods, data formatting, aggregating and visualisation. The range and nature of publicly available information and its value in an urban analysis context is also explored, linking collective information sites such as Pachube, to local environmental analysis and sensor webs. These are discussed in this paper, toward determining the possibilities for novel understandings of the city from a user centric, real-time urban perspective.

summary The paper presents an innovative semantic and parametric method to build 3D models to be used in cognitive-information systems. We integrated structured geometrical and documentary information resulting from multiple sources with the aim to enhance the knowledge of those sites within the frame of their historical evolution and their institutional management in a 3D GIS/DB. The developed applications were designed for different types of users, with a largely scalable interface, able to support different output devices and to work at different levels of iconicity. The system allows a full comprehension of the buildings in their own context, permitting to discover unknown relationships, to evaluate their architectural occupancy and to quickly access a complex system of information.

summary The Attractive City Generator is an interactive installation with which users can create or rearrange virtual cities by placing and moving physical objects. Through the set of simple inputs that the users provide and which represent city areas, landscapes or landmarks, the ACG is capable of creating complex and growing cities. In addition, a plethora of factual feedback on these cities is calculated. Becoming physically involved enhances the learningprocess and increases the user’s interest. The users are drawn to the colourful and simple interface. Due to the practical feedback that the city returns, the users can feel more attached to the city they have created. A dynamic dialogue is formed between the city and its creators, that involves the wishes of the users versus the needs of the virtual city, the practical interaction on the table versus the theoretical calculations taking place inside the computer, the physical input versus the digital output.

summary The paper reports on a pilot study of how a virtual city can be enhanced by interlinking elements of the 3D city model with the city’s collective memory represented in various digital formats. A particular street called Jalan Malioboro in Yogyakarta Indonesia has been modeled and hosted on Google Earth. Through the questionnaires returned by the participating students, we also investigate how collective memory enhanced virtual city (CREATI) could help learners to achieve goals of a particular course. The study shows that CREATI helps students to analyze the task given by providing more historical information related to the street. However it also needs further refinement and evaluation by introducing more interactive features such as enabling students to upload their own design proposals and to post additional information related to the buildings or places.

summary The purpose of this study is the development of a tool by which citizens who are non-specialists can design a regional revitalisation project. Therefore, a 3D CAD / VR (3-dimensional computer-aided design / virtual reality) combination system was developed by using SketchUP Pro, GIMP, and UC-win / Road. This system has the advantages of low cost and easy operation. The utility of the system was verified as a result of applying the developed prototype system in the Super Science High School program for high school students created by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan. It has been used for two years, since 2007. In addition, the characteristics of the VR made by the non-specialists were considered.

summary This paper presents an assessment of a selection software tools for urban design confronting their capabilities with the goals of the CityInduction research project. The goal of this paper is the assessment of existing platforms for computer aided urban design to select one as the basis for implementing the urban design model proposed in the CityInduction project. This model includes three sub-models that support the formulation of design programs from contextual information, the exploration of designs solutions through a grammarbased generative approach, and the validation of designs against the program through the use of evaluation tools. To each of these sub-models corresponds a module in the envisioned platform and so, existing platforms are assessed in terms of their ability to support the implementation of each module. The current goal is a proof-of-concept implementation, but the final goal is the development of a complete platform for supporting urban design.

summary Protocol Growth attempts to approach the process of design in an alternative, bottom-up fashion, that is not based on master planning but instead on the development of a protocol that would allow infrastructure to ‘selforganize’, adapting at the same time to the conditions that it encounters. First, the concept of the protocol is explained and positioned in its historical context in order to better understand the needs that it satisfies. Then the characteristics of such an approach are illustrated through the example of a structure that aims to the development of a system that would allow for a settlement to face the rising of the water level because of global warming. The model proposed, instead of following a ‘long term’ plan adapts itself to the situation that it encounters and grows in height following an algorithm designed for that reason.

summary The paper describes how parametric systems have been used to help students bridge from conceptual design to descriptive results. Specifically, it describes projects set in two cities, Hong Kong and Melbourne, to address substantive urban design issues and illustrate that the approach is not scale or culturally bounded. The project undertaken in Hong Kong establishes interdependency models for dense urban structure and examined urban systems that contribute positively to their contextual setting. Parametric models were used to develop diagrams of site potential through models of air movement, light and sun exposure, in particular addressing air quality in one of the most polluted places in Hong Kong. The Melbourne case studies examine urban systems as self-organising systems. In these, the case studies identify parameters that determine two patterns: material pattern of the city and cognitive pattern of the city. The paper illustrates the use of a parametric system as a diagramming tool to explore urban propositions from an urban system.

summary This paper outlines the work and organizational framework of World16, a working group of 16 professors from around the world that engage in collaborative research on virtual reality (VR) technologies. Because of the abundance of VR software and the resulting fragmentation of research efforts in this field, World16 shares knowledge and resources using a common software package. A common research platform facilitates the sharing of data and the coordination of research efforts among member professors spread around the world. In addition to the organizational practices of World16’s project management team, various tools and methods of sharing research are described. Additionally, World16’s major research projects are outlined as well as the successes and failures of working within a shared software platform. Lastly, future work and goals of World16 are discussed, including the marketing and commercialization of several computational tools created by member professors.

summary The paper focuses on the early stages of the design process where the architect needs assistance in finding reference projects and describes different aspects of a concept for retrieving previous design solutions with similar layout characteristics. Such references are typically used to see how others have solved a similar architectural problem or simply for inspiration. Current electronic search methods use textual information rather than graphical information. The configuration of space and the relations between rooms are hard to represent using keywords, in fact transforming these spatial configurations into verbally expressed typologies tends to result in unclear and often imprecise descriptions of architecture. Nowadays, modern IT-technologies lead to fundamental changes during the process of designing buildings. Digital representations of architecture require suitable approaches to the storage, indexing and management of information as well as adequate retrieval methods. Traditionally planning information is represented in the form of floor plans, elevations, sections and textual descriptions. State of the art digital representations include renderings, computer aided design (CAD) and semantic information like Building Information Modelling (BIM) including 2D and 3D file formats such as Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) (IAI, 2010). In the paper, we examine the development of IT-technologies in the area of case-based reasoning (Richter et al., 2007) to provide a sketch-based submission and retrieval system for publishing and researching building layouts including their manipulation and subsequent use. The user interface focuses on specifying space and their relations by drawing them. This query style supports the spatial thinking approach that architects use, who often have a visual representation in mind without being able to provide an accurate description of the spatial configuration. The semantic fingerprint proposed by (Langenhan, 2008) is a description and query language for creating an index of floor plans to store meta-data about architecture, which can be used as signature for retrieving reference projects. The functional spaces, such as living room or kitchen and the relation among on another, are used to create a fingerprint. Furthermore, we propose a visual sketch-based interface (Weber et al., 2010) based on the Touch&Write paradigm (Liwicki et al., 2010) for the submission and the retrieval phase. During the submission process the architect is sketching the space-boundaries, space relations and functional coherence's. Using state of the art document analysis techniques, the architects are supported offering an automatic detection of room boundaries and their physical relations. During the retrieval the application will interpret the sketches of the architect and find reference projects based on a similarity based search utilizing the semantic fingerprint. By recommending reference projects, architects will be able to reuse collective experience which match the current requirements. The way of performing a search using a sketch as a query is a new way of thinking and working. The retrieval of 3D models based on a sketched shape are already realized in several domains. We already propose a step further, using the semantics of a spatial configuration. Observing the design process of buildings reveals that the initial design phase serves as the foundation for the quality of the later outcome. The sketch-based approach to access valuable information using the semantic fingerprint enables the user to digitally capture knowledge about architecture, to recover and reuse it in common-sense. Furthermore, automatically analysed fingerprints can put forward both commonly used as well as best practice projects. It will be possible to rate architecture according to the fingerprint of a building.

title Thai children’s participation in development of 3D virtual village

summary This paper present the process of virtual world’s adaptation to the vision of the real environment designed by the children of two primary Thai schools – a state school and a private school. The main point of the present paper is presentation of empirical research that is an analysis of four exercises – inquiries in which I asked children to draw the elements of their city and social life. The first task was to represent a route from home to school. Next, children were asked to draw the plan of their school, on which they had to differentiate the places dedicated to them, the common spaces and the spaces for another people. The last exercise done at school was related to the description of their family and their closest friends. At the end, the children were asked to draw an inside of their houses with the maximum of details. The results of representations of the daily life environments analysed and synthesised were rebuilt with the graphic computer tools. They will serve as the base of the conception of a 3D virtual village dedicated to the Thai children.

summary The main goal for the architects or planners is to understand a perspective of the user. The foundation of the design process is to create buildings and environments, which will be both innovative and functional for all types of users, including adults and children. While planning the environments for children the particular aspects should be considered. The important questions are: What kind of contact does child have with the city, urban places and buildings? How does the child construct the picture of the city? What kind of urban or architectural spaces contributes to the relation that a child has with the environment? Most of the previous studies concentrating on creation of spaces for children have focused on the perspectives that have adults. According to CAADRIA 2010 paper, the objective of our study was to “learn about” (get to know the) children’s perception of everyday places. The main goal of the project was to define an appropriate tool for the design process. We identified three elements, which were considered to be the most important for child’s identification with environment: home, school, and the journey from home to school. For this purpose, children living in a residential community in Bangkok were surveyed. Contrariwise to the quantitative approach (Neisch, 2010), the concept of Colour – Code Models of space propose a qualitative development of this research – a graphic language which allow to understand the children’s spatial world, the novel way to analyze and present space, useful for educate architects and planners.
