summary In intelligent epoch, automatic parameter design systems reduce the requirements of the skills needed to create objects. The creator only needs to select the most perceptual primitive form to automatically generate the data system that iterates to the most efficient solution. In this paper, a method of combining performance driven optimization with parametric design is proposed. The iterative evolution is under the control of performance loop and fabrication loop, which makes all the data provided by parametric design in a practical project available for exploring structural analysis and digital prefabrication. Related to the case of surface steel structure, parametric optimization is not limited to a set of shape types or design problems, it would be based on the generality and built-in characteristics of parametric modelling environment in the most convenient and flexible way. (Rolvink et al. 2010)And the given parameters would be fed back on geometric structure, performance indicators, and design variables, so that designers can easily and effectively coordinate and try different solutions. The system transforms the generated data into machine language so that the process including design, analysis, manufacturing, and construction can maintain the orthogonal persistence of the data.

title Digital architecture for humanitarian design: a case study of applying digital technologies in post-disaster reconstruction

summary This paper describes the context and proposal for applying digital technology in humanitarian design for remote areas of developing countries that are the most technologically challenged. It presents a case study of on-going post-disaster reconstruction in the Solomon Islands. A system of digital tools, in particular parametric modelling, was devised to optimise the exemplar design for site and project specific needs, and reduce time and cost required in the overall design and construction process. Shelters developed under this system will start construction in 2010.

summary This paper presents a case study comparing the behaviour of designers in a collaborative 3D virtual environment with those in a face-to-face environment using quantitative tools to examine their design protocols. It starts with depicting a design ontology along with two methods of analysis for this investigation. The results in this case show that the 3D environment increases the designer’s Structure activities. The rate of meaningful design communication is slower than the base-line face-to-face session. This communication reflects the rate of design cognition when the design process is “close coupled”. Reviewing the design protocol suggests that the 3D design session composed of both “loosely coupled” and “close coupled” periods. This is consistent with other studies that 3D collaborative tools may encourage “loosely coupled” design process.

summary Among the founding fathers of architectural computing, the late W.J. Mitchell was arguably the one who managed to capture the imagination of the younger generations through overviews and insights that described the backgrounds and scope of the area in a way that was suitable for novices as well as people outside the area. Calling such overviews successful popularization is only part of the truth. More importantly, they formulate a coherent and comprehensive approach that allowed Mitchell to move between eras and contexts without loosing focus or sacrificing fundamental priorities. It is an approach that remains valid and usable, a source of inspiration and understanding for future generations in the area.

summary Robotic additive manufacturing has garnered significant research and development interest due to its transformative potential in architecture, engineering, and construction as a cost-effective, material-efficient, and energy-saving fabrication method. However, despite its potential, conventional approaches heavily depend on meticulously optimized work environments, as robotic arms possess limited information regarding their immediate surroundings (Bechthold, 2010; Bechthold & King, 2013). Furthermore, such approaches are often restricted to planar build surfaces and slicing algorithms due to computational and physical practicality, which consequently limits the feasibility of robotic solutions in scenarios involving complex geometries and materials. Building on previous work (Çapunaman et al., 2022), this research investigates conformal 3D printing of clay using a 6 degrees-of-freedom robot arm and a vision-based sensing framework on parametrically reconfigurable tensile hyperbolic paraboloid (hypar) formwork. In this paper, we present the implementation details of the formwork system, share findings from preliminary testing of the proposed workflow, and demonstrate application feasibility through a design exercise that aims to fabricate unique components for a poly-hypar surface structure. The formwork system also offers parametric control over generating complex, non-planar tensile surfaces to be printed on. Within the scope of this workflow, the vision-based sensing framework is employed to generate a digital twin informing iterative tuning of the formwork geometry and conformal toolpath planning on scanned geometries. Additionally, we utilized the augmented fabrication framework to observe and analyze deformations in the printed clay body that occurs during air drying. The proposed workflow, in conjunction with the vision-based sensing framework and the reconfigurable formwork, aims to minimize time and material waste in custom formwork fabrication and printing support materials for complex geometric panels and shell structures.

summary We present a simulation platform to evaluate procedurally generated 3d city models with a set of agents representing urban street actors and pedestrians towards greenhouse gas emissions from transportation. Our aim is to give architects and urban planners an empiric tool to analyze, predict and quantify traffic fluctuations over time, and define the number of occupants, individual traffic and public transport in a city. In this project we show that the allocation of functions within a city is an important factor for the appearanceof traffic. The occupant’s decisions where they want to go are defined by the allocation of functions – and the distance defines the mode of transportation. We simulate the decision processes and gain information about the path, the mode of transportation, and the emissions they produce, and individual experiences like stress and effort. The autonomous driving cars are equipped with an acceleration based emission model allowing us to evaluate the inpact of jammed streets on the emission of cars.

summary The recent developments in digital technologies and contemporary design tools are initiating new approaches of form-finding based on parametric development of multiple geometries with simultaneous consideration of various aspects. This paper focuses on the use of advanced parametric CAD systems and reformulated construction logics to enhance the potential and possibilities of form finding processes. This approach is exemplified through the “Greenhouse Trauttmansdorff project”. The project demonstrates a form finding approach which is based on defined parameters that not only fulfil aesthetic and functional aspects, but simultaneously take structural properties and the resulting sun shading behaviour into account. We will explore within this paper how – next to the functional and contextual building requirements – required illumination levels inside the greenhouse create a feedback loop between the structural system and its cladding system.

The theoretical frameworks that support this research and that are being used in the educational area to observe and understand practice are activity theory and situated learning.

summary We investigate the recent coincidence of rapid global urbanization and unprecedented formal freedom in architectural design and ask whether this coincidence is an uneasy one. To study an extreme case of the new exotic geometries made possible through CAAD, we employ algebraic surfaces to experimentally design architecture in an university-based research and experimental design project. Such surfaces exhibit unprecedented complexity and new geometric and topological features yet are highly sound and harmonious. We continue and extend our research presented at the eCAADe 2009 conference in Istanbul.

summary Increasing productivity and efficiency is an important issue in the AEC field. This area is mainly characterized by fragmentation, heterogeneous teams with low lifetimes and many uncertainties. 4D CAD is one of the greatest innovations in recent years. It consists in linking a 3D model of the building with the works planning in order to simulate the construction evolution over time. 4D CAD can fill several needs from design to project management through constructivity analysis and tasks planning (Tommelein 2003). The literature shows that several applications have been proposed to improve the 4D CAD use (Chau et al. 2004; Lu et al. 2007; Seok & al. 2009). In addition, studies have shown the real impact of 4D CAD use in construction projects (Staub-French & Khanzode 2007; Dawood & Sika 2007). More recently, Mahalingam et al. (2010) showed that the collaborative use of 4D CAD is particularly useful during the pre-construction phase for comparing the constructability of working methods, for visually identifying conflicts and clashes (overlaps), and as visual tool for practitioners to discuss and to plan project progress. So the advantage of the 4D CAD collaborative use is demonstrated. Moreover, several studies have been conducted both in the scientific community and in the industrial world to improve it (Zhou et al. 2009; Kang et al. 2007). But an important need that remains in collaborative 4D CAD use in construction projects is about the adaptation of visualization to the users business needs. Indeed, construction projects have very specific characteristics (fragmentation, variable team, different roles from one project to another). Moreover, in the AEC field several visualization techniques can represent the same concept and actors choose one or another of these techniques according to their specific needs related to the task they have to perform. For example, the tasks planning may be represented by a Gantt chart or by a PERT network and the building elements can be depicted with a 3D model or a 2D plan. The classical view (3D + Gantt) proposed to all practitioners in the available 4D tools seems therefore not suiting the needs of all. So, our research is based on the hypothesis that adapting the visualization to individual business needs could significantly improve the collaboration. This work relies on previous ones and aim to develop a method 1) to choose the best suited views for performed tasks and 2) to compose adapted multiple views for each actor, that we call “business views”. We propose a 4 steps-method to compose business views. The first step identifies the users’ business needs, defining the individual practices performed by each actor, identifying his business tasks and his information needs. The second step identifies the visualization needs related to the identified business needs. For this purpose, the user’s interactions and visualization tasks are described. This enables choosing the most appropriate visualization techniques for each need (step 3). At this step, it is important to describe the visualization techniques and to be able to compare them. Therefore, we proposed a business view metamodel. The final step (step 4) selects the adapted views, defines the coordination mechanisms and the interaction principles in order to compose coordinated visualizations. A final step consists in a validation work to ensure that the composed views really match to the described business needs. This paper presents the latest version of the method and especially presents our latest works about its first and second steps. These include making more generic the business tasks description in order to be applicable within most of construction projects and enabling to make correspondence with visualization tasks.

summary The paper follows the development of digital tools for architects and briefly discusses their utility within education and practice. The move from static CAD tools to time based media followed by programmatic processes and virtual environment design is addressing the evolution of the profession and to an extent reflects practitioners’ needs. The paper focuses on the notion of interactivity and how it is been addressed in various fields. Borrowing from computer science and game design the author presents a course dealing with designing interactivity, responsiveness and users feeding their input back in the design. The aim of the paper is to analyse and support a new set of tools in architectural curricula that will implement interactivity and integrate it into spatial design leading to a holistic approach promoting intelligence, hybridity and responsiveness of the built environment. Following, the elaboration of the rationale, a brief discussion on tools and project directions is carried out.

title Authoring Tools for KOC - Concepts and Pedagogical Use

summary One of the main problems of teachers aiming to teach the construction techniques used in to build a building is the lack of practical examples to show to their students. In order to be useful, these examples must come from real projects or even better the teachers may take their students to constructions sites, but this latter option is not always available and may be dangerous. To deal with this problem, Los Andes University has committed the construction of a knowledge repository containing information gathered from real projects and semantically described, in order to provide easy access to its content and in the language of people of construction. This project is called KOC, standing for Knowledge Objects of Construction, which uses an ontology to describe semantically the data contained in the repository. Being the pedagogical objective of the project, it is important to provide the teachers with additional tools to generate new knowledge objects, based on existing knowledge objects in the repository. This paper presents three composition tools for KOC: a complex objects composer issued from structured searches, a constructive processes composer and a case study composer, all of them aiming the improvement of learning quality in the technical area of building construction at the architecture and engineering schools. The paper also shows some examples of knowledge objects and how KOC is been used in the courses of the Architecture Department of Los Andes.

summary Our contention is that the city is a rich collection of urban micro-ecologies in continuous formation that include information types outside the traditional boundaries of urban design, city planning, and architecture and their native data fields. This paper discusses working with non-standard urban data types of a highly granular nature, and the analytical possibilities and technical issues associated with their aggregation, through a post professional masters level research studio project run in 2008. Opportunities for novel urban analysis arising from this process are discussed in the context of typical urban planning and analysis systems and locative media practices. This research bought to light specific technical and conceptual issues arising from the combination of processes including sources of data, data collection methods, data formatting, aggregating and visualisation. The range and nature of publicly available information and its value in an urban analysis context is also explored, linking collective information sites such as Pachube, to local environmental analysis and sensor webs. These are discussed in this paper, toward determining the possibilities for novel understandings of the city from a user centric, real-time urban perspective.

summary This article presents a framework based on tele - collaboration (AccessGrid) to assist in project review tasks based on 2D images as project supports. The focus of the proposed environment is: the participation of all actors, the concept of “annotations” made by participants in a project, proposal comparisons (with their respective “annotations”) and the recording of these sessions for subsequent examination and analysis. Both online and in - room tests of this environment have been performed. This allows us to evaluate the benefits offered by both in terms of the attention and participation of assistants in the revision of the project, and illustrates the value of recording the “memory” from the sessions as material that may be used in the analysis of these important exercises.
