summary Robotic Woodcraft is a transdisciplinary, arts-based investigation into robotic arms at the University for Applied Arts Vienna. Bringing together the craftsmen of the Department for Wood Technology, the geometers of the Department for Arts and Technology, the young industrial design office Lucy.D and the roboticists of the Association for Robots in Architecture, the research project explores new approaches on how to couple high-tech robotic arms with high-end wood fabrication. In the eCAADe workshop, participants are introduced to KUKA|prc (parametric robot control, Braumann and Brell-Cokcan, 2011) and shown approaches on how to create their own digital fabrication tools for customized fabrication processes involving wood.

summary Drawing on architecture, urban digital media, engineering, IT and interaction design, the research presented in this paper outlines a possible shift from architecture designed through computation (any type of process, algorithm or measurement done in a computational matter) towards architecture capable of computing (developing, using and improving computer technology, computer hardware and software as a space-defining element). The research is driven by recent developments in four fields, as follows: (a) Architecture in its recent development has shifted from a planar box, as was the ideal in the modernist movement, towards complex and non-standard forms. (b) The design concepts of non-standard surfaces have been adopted into media facades and media architecture by liberating the pixel from its planar position on a screen [1]. (c) Advancements in pervasive computing applications are now able both to receive information from the environment in which they are used and to detect other devices that enter this environment [2]. (d) Developments in advanced autonomous systems such as Human Computer Interaction (HCI) or Human Robot Interaction (HRI), have produced intelligent systems capable of observing human cues and using these cues as the basis for intelligent decision-making [3]. Media fa_ßade developments work in the direction of the above-mentioned four fields, but often come with limitations in architectural integration; they need additional components to interact with their environment and their interactions are both often limited to visual interactions and require the user to act first. The researched system, Polymedia Pixel [4] discussed in this paper, can overcome these limitations and fulfil the need for a space-defining material capable of computing, thus enabling a shift from architecture designed by computation towards architecture capable of active computing. The Polymedia Pixel architecture merges digital technology with ubiquitous computing. This allows the built environment and its relation with digital technology to develop from (a) architecture being represented by computer to (b) computation being used to develop architecture and then further to where (c) architecture and the space-defining objects have computing attributes. Hence the study presented aims to consider and answer this key question: ‚ÄòWhen building components with computing capacity can define space and function as a computer at the same time, what are the constraints for the building components and what are the possible advantages for the built environment?‚Äô The conceptual framework, design and methods used in this research combine three fields: (a) hardware (architecture and design, electronic engineering) (b) software (content design and IT) and (c) interaction design (HCI and HRI). Architecture and urban design determinates the field of application. Media architecture and computer science provide the technological foundation, while the field of interaction design defines the methodology to link space and computing [5]. The conceptual starting point is to rethink the application of computers in architecture and, if architecture is capable of computing, what kind of methodology and structure would find an answer to the above core research question, and what are the implications of the question itself? The case study discusses opportunities for applying the Polymedia Pixel as an architectural component by testing it on: (a) constraint testing ‚Äì applying computational design methodologies to design space (b) singular testing - discussing the advantages for an individual building, and (c) plural testing ‚Äì investigating the potential for an urban context. The research aims to contribute to the field of knowledge through presenting first steps of a System < - > System mode where buildings can possibly watch and monitor each other, additional to the four primary interactive modes of operation. This investigation, its proposed hypothesis, methodology, implications, significance and evaluation are presented in the paper.

summary This study investigates the potential of multimedia learning materials to improve the possibilities of knowledge construction processes about computer graphics technology. The primary hypothesis was that information in multimedia format, could contribute to overcome epistemological obstacles students encounter, more effectively than printed literature, and improve the quality of their learning. We designed multimedia learning materials, using appropriate pedagogy and instructional strategies. We gave them to the students and used them for teaching. The results suggest that the hypothesis could be corroborated, thus indicators of knowledge level and quality of the students, showed a significant upswing.

summary If we compare the architectural design process to a black box system, we can assume that we now know quite well both inputs and outputs of the system. Indeed, everything about the early project either feasibility studies, programming, context integration, site analysis (urban, rural or natural), as well as the integration of participants in a collaborative process can all be considered to initiate and sustain the architectural design and ideation process. Similarly, outputs from that process are also, and to some extent, well known and identifiable. We are referring here, among others, to the project representations or even to the concrete building construction and its post-evaluation. But what about the black box itself that produces the ideation. This is the question that attempts to answer the research. Currently, very few research works linger to identify how the human brain accomplishes those tasks; how to identify the cognitive functions that are playing this role; to what extent they operate and complement each other, and among other things, whether there possibly a chain of causality between these functions. Therefore, this study proposes to define a model that reflects the activity of the black box based on the cognitive activity of the human brain. From an extensive literature review, two cognitive functions have been identified and are investigated to account for some of the complex cognitive activity that occurs during a design process, namely the mental workload and mental imagery. These two variables are measured quantitatively in the context of real design task. Essentially, the mental load is measured using a Bakan's test and the mental imagery with eyes tracking. The statistical software G-Power was used to identify the necessary subject number to obtain for significant variance and correlation result analysis. Thus, in the context of an exploratory research, to ensure effective sample of 0.25 and a statistical power of 0.80, 32 participants are needed. All these participants are students from 3rd, 4th or 5th grade in architecture. They are also very familiar with the architectural design process and the design mediums used, i.e., analog model, freehand drawing and CAD software, SketchUp. In three experimental sessions, participants were asked to design three different projects, namely, a bus shelter, a recycling station and a public toilet. These projects were selected and defined for their complexity similarity, taking into account the available time of 22 minutes, using all three mediums of design, and this in a randomly manner to avoid the order effect. To analyze the two cognitive functions (mental load and mental imagery), two instruments are used. Mental imagery is measured using eye movement tracking with monitoring and quantitative analysis of scan paths and the resulting number and duration of participant eye fixations (Johansson et al, 2005). The mental workload is measured using the performance of a modality hearing secondary task inspired by Bakan'sworks (Bakan et al.; 1963). Each of these three experimental sessions, lasting 90 minutes, was composed of two phases: 1. After calibrating the glasses for eye movement, the subject had to exercise freely for 3 minutes while wearing the glasses and headphones (Bakan task) to get use to the wearing hardware. Then, after reading the guidelines and criteria for the design project (± 5 minutes), he had 22 minutes to execute the design task on a drawing table allowing an upright posture. Once the task is completed, the subject had to take the NASA TLX Test, on the assessment of mental load (± 5 minutes) and a written post-experimental questionnaire on his impressions of the experiment (± 10 minutes). 2. After a break of 5-10 minutes, the participant answered a psychometric test, which is different for each session. These tests (± 20 minutes) are administered in the same order to each participant. Thus, in the first experimental session, the subject had to take the psychometric test from Ekstrom et al. (1978), on spatial performance (Factor-Referenced Cognitive Tests Kit). During the second session, the cognitive style is evaluated using Oltman's test (1971). Finally, in the third and final session, participant creativity is evaluated using Delis-Kaplan test (D-KEFS), Delis et al. (2001). Thus, this study will present the first results of quantitative measures to establish and validate the proposed model. Furthermore, the paper will also discuss the relevance of the proposed approach, considering that currently teaching of ideation in ours schools of architecture in North America is essentially done in a holistic manner through the architectural project.

summary This research paper presents a specific understanding of the relations between parametric modelling activities and architectural conception activities. Our main question is: Can we make a distinction between cognitive operations of parametric modelling and cognitive operations of architectural conception? To shed light on this question, this paper is leaning on analyses of some uses of the parametric modeler Digital Project. The cases studies are students’ projects from two Architecture Studios: the Cross Over Studio of the Universität die Angewandte in Vienna; and the Studio P9 Digital Knowledge of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Paris Malaquais in Paris. Our main result is the observation of a distinction between cognitive operations of parametric modelling and cognitive operations of architectural conception. The distinction of these two kinds of operations leads at questioning the relation between them. We have questioned these relations in terms of induction from one to another. But some interesting merging of these two kinds of operations appeared also.

summary Designers have always assembled materials to form purposeful connections between ideas and spaces, uniting the height of human thought with the great ability of people to shape the world with their hands and tools. People have understood this opportunity and used it to inform the material investments that they make in buildings.When reflecting upon the past ten or so years of practice it is clear that some methodologies have matured. Professionals, academics and students have found new ways to connect thinking and doing. These connections have a different flavor and tend to feel more analytical to those once used. Previously internalized decisions are being made increasingly explicit by a generation of designers that has found a more meaningful overlap between the theories and procedures of design. The methods they use are visual, analytical, as well as intuitive, and encompassed within a whole gamut of tools such as Grasshopper, Ecotect, Digital Project and Generative Components. All of these tools provide opportunities for designers to inquisitively explore alternative formal, spatial and environmental relationships. The opportunities that are brought by increasing externalization are important. Design is at once turning away from its focus on the end result, be it a building or an interior, and toward a renewed interest in the design process itself. Brought about by encapsulating design principles into self-made tools, this shift has enabled families of formal outcomes rather than singular instances of ‘pure’ architecture. These multiple, equally valid, formal outcomes disrupt more traditional measures of formal legitimacy and help move architects toward more relational understandings of space, time and environment.

title Packing the “Chinese box”: A strategy to manage knowledge using architectural digital models

summary The architectural design activity has been transformed due to technological advances in building knowledge management. The research proposed is based on a three years long Ph.D. work on 3D models intended as graphical informative systems, layered according to the “Chinese box” paradigm and destined to professionals and researchers in architecture. The applied case study is referred to San Vitale’s church in Ravenna, Italy: the monument was investigated through nested digital models produced by different computer programs. Passing through evolutionary steps identified as synthesis, reduction and projection, the resulting archive lowered its Complication Ratio, a numerical value inspired by fractal’s auto-similarity, indicating a recursive modification in morphologies and contents. Models so conceived are qualified as progressive knowledge-based catalogues easily interchangeable and useful to understand how new or existing architectures work. As a result of this approach, representations obtained with surveys, historical chronicles, light analysis and acoustic simulations were composed following gradual refinements: technical data were collected running parallel to bibliographic research, enriching interactive virtual models sprung from a recursive criterion destined to increase the information enclosed into an undivided, lossless, digital archive.

The Virtual Building Simulator represents a prototype of a design platform where the designer-user can immersive himself via VR into the interactive spatial formation process. summary Digital fabrication has become the true counterpoint to computer aided design in architecture. Thanks to new C.A.D./C.A.M. technologies architectural design can now manufacture complex buildings that only a decade ago could have been almost impossible to develop. This convergence between C.A.D./C.A.M. technologies is producing a trend from construction to manufacturing. Arbitrariness of architectural form should not be confused with arbitrariness of architectural design, the latter being contradictory with the very essence of design. Conventional or digital architecture must achieve design consistency and must rely on architecture’s basic principle, that of necessity. New materiality is a term being coined in relation to digital fabrication and the way it should address materiality in architecture. Innovation in the use of conventional materials, the ways in which they may be manufactured or tiled, as well as the emergence of new materials may outline what new materiality is about.

summary Scientific output has well-established methods for comparing and scoring the quality and quantity of the work. For artistic output this matter is not settled at all and a subject of much debate. We present a method which has been developed in Czech republic since 2011. This method is used to compare and score the artistic output of all schools of arts in the country (for example, music, performative arts, architecture, literature, sculpture, painting). The system presented in this paper is based on the Saaty-method (also known as Analytic Hierarchy Process). After almost eight years of development and use, the system has proven as a valuable asset to assess in an objective way output between many different forms of artistic works. In 2016 the system was incorporated in the Higher Education Act. In the paper we present a brief history of the development and the principles of AHP applied in the system. In particular, we will focus on the findings in architecture derived from the system. Finally, we will discuss possible implications for architectural education in general.

summary The study of value and its transfer during the multi-disciplinary process of design is stable fodder for research; an entire issue of Design Studies has been devoted to Values in the Design Process. By scrutinising design meetings Dantec (2009) and Ball (2009) separately examine the mechanisms of value transfer between the agents involved in design (clients, designers, engineers). Dantec suggests this is best understood in terms of requirement, values and narrative; Ball proposes it should be viewed as a combination of "analogical reasoning" and "environmental simulation". If we look at Vitruvius and his primary architectural manual (Pollio 1960) we find values‚Äîin the form of firmitas, utilitas and venustas‚Äîembedded in this early codification of architectural practice. However, as much current research is restricted to design practice what occurs when value frameworks move between domains of cultural activity (such as design to construction and vice-versa) is not privileged with a comparably sizable body of research. This paper is concerned with the ongoing usage of pervasive media and cellular phones within communications and value transfer across the disciplinary threshold of design and construction. Through participation in a building project we analyse the subtleties of interaction between analogue communication such as sketches and digitally sponsored communication such as e-mail and mobile phone usage. Analysing the communications between the designer and builder during construction suggests it is also a creative process and the distinctions between design and construction processes are complex and often blurred. This work provides an observational basis for understanding mobile computing as a dynamic ‚Äòtuning‚Äô device‚Äîas hypothesized by Richard Coyne (2010)‚Äîthat ameliorates the brittleness of communication between different disciplines. A follow up study deploys ‚Äòdigital fieldnotes‚Äô (dfn) a bespoke iPhone application designed to test further suppositions regarding the influence exerted upon group working by mobile computing. Within collaboration individual communiqu_©s have different levels of importance depending on the specific topic of discussion and the contributing participant. This project furthers the earlier study; expanding upon what mobile computing is and enabling us to infer how these emergent devices affect collaboration. Findings from these two investigations suggest that the synchronous and asynchronous clamour of analogue and digital tools that surround design and construction are not exclusively inefficiencies or disruptions to be expunged. Observational evidence suggests they may provide contingency and continue to have value attending to the relationship between static components‚Äîand the avoidance of failure‚Äîwithin a complex system such as design and construction.

summary The building design stage starts with an early effort by the architect to create a sketch which embodies the fundamental building knowledge that forms the basis for all later work. This knowledge is mostly lost in current building design practice procedures where the sketch is reduced to individual building components such as walls, floors, etc. By the time the building is constructed, new efforts have to be made to document information about the building necessary to control and maintain it during operation. This paper represents the next step to a Ph.D. study that describes the early building process and important features to support. It presents a sample design session from the study and based on observations from this session, it identifies and describes important digital objects that can be used to capture building knowledge in the sketch.

summary One of the few quantitative methods available for the consistent analysis of architectural form is the ‘box-counting’ approach to determining the approximate fractal dimension of a plan or elevation. In its computational form this method has been used to analyze the plans and facades of a wide range of buildings. The data points produced are synthesized by the software into a series of fractal dimension (D) values that are in turn compiled in various ways to produce a series of composite results describing a complete building. Once this process is complete the data may be coded with additional information producing a set of mathematical results that describe the form of a building. This paper offers the first complete description of this important analytical process from the point of view of information flow, algorithmic operations, review options and data magnitude. No previous paper has detailed the full scope of the data used in the computational method, or the way in which various stages produce different types of outcomes. The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the way in which this particular computational method, drawing its inspiration from the complexity in natural systems, may be used to process different types of information and produce various forms of quantitative data to support architectural design and analysis.

summary Performative design can be understood as the combined usage of spatial analysis simulations and form generation procedures to imbue architectural form with material characteristics and behaviours which define desirable structural, environmental and economic performance. However, to date, design processes that facilitate the integration of ‘form generation’ and ‘spatial analysis’ remain under-developed, making existing performative design methodologies highly reliant upon the manual execution of analysis and evaluation procedures. This paper presents an evolutionary design process that uses integrative computational pipelines and generatively defined component-based assemblies to produce performative structures in response to solar performance. The resulting structures demonstrate how performative composite behaviour can emerge within ‘disassociated’ componential assemblies and produce complex formal interrelationships which surpass simplistic parametric logics. This offers new possibilities for conceiving highly integrated ‘morphogenetic assemblies’ and suggests trajectories for further research within the field of morphogenetic design.

summary How to stop and look inside the hectic rhythm of a number of stimulus superimposed by modern major cities? Where is the aesthetic experience going when the passer-by wanders the web, and the problems of the voyage and body are to be devised again, within the contemporary society? This paper stems from these and other questions, regarding the transformation of the aesthetic experience by new media, that makes impervious the direct experience of the other, and the city; but at the same time unlocks a democratic identity construction opportunity, through a new perceptive and cognitive space, framed within the possibilities offered by a disembodied voyage.

summary This paper presents and demonstrates a "Computational Design Sustainability" (CDS) framework, inspired by "Computational Sustainability" (CS), which is a new area in computational research (C. Gomes & Yang, 2011). CS aims to apply techniques from computer science to address sustainability problems affecting a wide range of fields from environmental sciences to social studies. While CS has been broadly embraced in environmental science, the great potential of this concept to address grand challenges and solve complex problems seems to have not been adequately explored in the built environment domain. Therefore, this paper attempts to formally investigate the application of CS in built environment research addressing different scales of design problems with computational design through proposing the new concept of CDS . These approaches are demonstrated and evaluated through a range of projects collectively conducted by the research team. CDS proposes to advance computational deign research by creating a trade-off between pillars of sustainability in an integrated multifaceted and multidisciplinary approach. The presented conceptual framework provides a formal means to critically understand and further advance these approaches in a systematic way suitable for future development and broader application.

summary Teaching about cities and planning involves complexities of understanding urban development in space and time, evolution and transformation of cities, urban politics, actors and stakeholders. Delivering efficient ways of teaching, is very important for educators, particularly among lecturers at universities who work with urban planning and design. Games can be used as educational tools and role-playing games can capture the political struggle of different actors and stakeholders involved in planning processes. Games can enable students to experience urban development and take roles of different actors and stakeholders in the planning and development processes and practice the art of negotiations in urban politics. Two educational games were written for the planning courses at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden. Since 2011, 17 games were played in different courses. Data from the evaluation forms was collected on 14 games and 277 students answered questions. This paper analyses the evaluation forms and the comments of the students who took part in the games and discusses gaming as an educational tool. The experiences with role-playing planning games are very positive. These ratings occurs consistently in each game that was played with very small variations.

summary The ACADIA 2011 conference, “integration through computation,” constitutes the latest achievements in architectural research toward the integrative program. This program is one in which “methods, processes, and techniques are discovered, appropriated, adapted, and altered from ‘elsewhere,’ and often ‘digitally’ pursued.” As such, integrative violence presents itself as the empowering agent for research that employs computation toward purposefully violating boundaries, hybridizing processes and instrumentalizing nature in the name of architecture. It is at once easy and impossible to imagine the extraordinary power necessary to undertake such a task, yet we find ourselves thoroughly immersed in processes that exploit the world as we know it so that we might be able to design worlds that have not yet been imagined. But what makes the integrative program possible, how is it administered, and what constitutes “an effective digital exchange of information?” While the best answers to these questions lie in the research presented and projects exhibited at this conference, I’d like to take a moment to examine how the integrative program operates and how its operation has evolved programmatic violence.
