summary Most CAD applications provide programming languages for automation and generative design. However, programs written in these languages are not portable because they execute only in the family of CAD applications for which they were originally written. Consequently, users are locked-in to one family of CAD applications and they cannot reuse programs written for other families. In this paper, we propose a solution to this problem: Rosetta, a programming environment that is compatible with several CAD applications. Rosetta is composed of (1) an abstraction layer that allows portable and transparent access to several different CAD applications; (2) back-ends that translate the abstraction layer into different CAD applications; (3) front-end programming languages in which users write the generative design programs; and (4) an intermediate programming language that encompasses the language constructs essential for geometric modeling and that is used as a compilation target for the front-ends.Rosetta allows users to explore different front-ends and back-ends, in order to find a combination that is most suitable for the problem at hand. As a result, users have access to different programming languages, namely, visual and textual, which can be used interchangeably to write generative design programs, without breaking portability. Furthermore, Rosetta ensures that a single program can be used to create identical geometric models in different CAD applications. This approach promotes the development of programs that are portable across the most used CAD applications, thus facilitating the dissemination of the programs and of the underlying ideas.

summary This paper describes work in progress in the area of producing affordable housing to underprivileged populations living in slums. This project is being developed recurring to a Shape Grammar approach, using a direct input strategy targeted to the common user with non digital expertise. The diversity of solutions are to be applied to three case studies in Mozambique, Angola and Brazil.

summary In this work, Type is suggested as a source of knowledge, once acknowledged that it is an efficient response to a specific problem, and that a knowledge based on observation of a greater quantity of occurrence of the phenomenon is more solid. The type is understood under the new Theory of Systems, that is, it carries within itself information on its environment. Thus, its understanding envolves that of the system. A study on the type Traditional Beach Villages of Ceará is then undertaken, using GIS software to retrieve information that are then translated and simulated on a Rhino/Grasshopper scripting.

summary The ongoing research project called “Emerg.cities4all” is focused on the development of a generative computer-aided planning support system for cities and housing to low-income populations, using a descriptive method as the Shape Grammars and based on multi-agent rule-based system. The goal is to develop a system that could reveal the cultural, social and spatial dynamics involved in the genesis of informal settlements (favelas, musseques and caniços) and use it to generate contemporary humanized urban morphologies. The multi agent shape grammar implementation could generate automatically designs according to different types of users: urban planners, architect and local end users. This paper presents the methodology and the initial results of the research, using an informal settlement as a case study.
