title On the architectural structure of photographic space

summary The ambiguous relationship between photography and architecture is one of constructed and re-constructed identity. As a specific exploration into this relationship, this paper considers the construct of point-of-vew/field-of-view maps (or POV/FOV maps), that is, diagrams which register photographers’ positions, fields of view, and directions of view corresponding to a set of photographs of an existing work of architecture. A POV/FOV map can be expected to differ according to whether the set of photographs under consideration is (a) sampled from a image-sharing site such as Flickr; (b) published in an academic monograph; or (c) published in the popular press. This paper tests the extent and significance of these differences through a comparative study of Mies van der Rohe’s Crown Hall and Rem Koolhaas’s McCormick Tribune Campus Center, both at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, USA. In both cases, POV/FOV maps are used to compare sets of professional or academic photographs to sets of touristic and popular-press ones. Reflecting the tenuous nature of architectural identity as constructed through photography, the comparison both confirms and denies assumptions concerning differences between professional and amateur approaches. The paper concludes with the speculation that tools like Google Street View are likely to further erode traditional distinctions between modes of identity-construction, in particular, those distinctions which a POV/MAP can register.

summary Research initiatives throughout history have shown how a designer typically makes associations and references to a vast amount of knowledge based on experiences to make decisions. With the increasing usage of information systems in our everyday lives, one might imagine an information system that provides designers access to the 'architectural memories' of other architectural designers during the design process, in addition to their own physical architectural memory. In this paper, we discuss how the increased adoption of semantic web technologies might advance this idea. We briefly discuss how such a semantic web of building information can be set up, and how this can be linked to a wealth of information freely available in the Linked Open Data (LOD) cloud.

summary A traditional design studio is organized round tutors who give the students an assignment, more precisely a design problem which the students have to solve in 12 weeks. Since 2006 we run at our University a design studio which is focused on a new way of thinking in and about architecture. In many aspects the organization differs greatly from the more traditional organized design studios. In the first part of the paper we will discuss the pedagogical organization of ‘our’ studio and how this new way of generative design is used in architectural training. In the second part we will show and discuss some students work, one project will be discussed in more detail. Finally, we will summarize our experience with this design studio and provide some guidelines for successful implementing Generative Design in architectural design teaching.

title ARCHITECTURAL DNA: A genetic exploration of complex structures

summary The approach demonstrated in this paper uses Evolutionary Computation (EC) to enhance and modify structural form based on biological micro structures.The forms are modified to conform to new boundary conditions associated with architectural structures.The process is based on a Genetic Algorithm (GA) which visually exposes for the designer a range of good performing solutions within thedesign space. The application of the GA is combined with parametric software, in this case Generative Components (GC). The program described here as ParaGen (Parametric Genetic Algorithm), uses a Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to determine the structural performance of the forms.This allows the designer to manipulate and optimize a parametrically defined model based on predefined criteria and parameters.The opportunities and limitations of this design process are explored and evaluated based on an experimental case study using topologies based on radiolarian skeletons.The design procedure described includes user interaction in the exploration of solutions that perform well both for the explicitly defined programmatic criteria (structural) as well as for the implicit criteria provided by the designer (visual aesthetic).

summary As Hong Kong constructs increasingly high-density, high-rise public housing estates to increase land use efficiency, public in-between spaces are more constrained, which impacts the quality of social relations, movements and daily practices of residents (Shelton et al. 2011; Tang et al. 2019). Current planning practices are focused on the achievement of quantitative performance measures, rather than qualitative design considerations that support residents experiences and community interaction. This paper presents a new methodology that combines urban analysis and generative design for the regeneration of social housing estates, based on the spatial and social qualities of their in-between spaces.
