title Ubiquent Narratives for the Design of Natural and Invisible Interfaces
source Herrera, PC, Dreifuss-Serrano, C, Gómez, P, Arris-Calderon, LF, Critical Appropriations - Proceedings of the XXVI Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics (SIGraDi 2022), Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas, Lima, 7-11 November 2022 , pp. 629–638
summary The article proposes to explore the concepts of storytelling (Lupton, 2020 and Xavier, 2015) and ubiquity (Santaella, 2013 and Santos, 2021) applied to the design of natural and invisible interfaces (Benyon, 2011). With Natural Interface it is possible to interact with devices directly, without needing the help of a mouse or keyboard. To do so, it presents as a case study the project “Criatura de Luz” (2015), by Estúdio Guto Requena, carried out to compose the new facade of the WZ Hotel (Sao Paulo). The purpose of this research is to understand the role of the designer in the creation of interfaces that are not only interactive, but that begin to propose immersive and ubiquitous narratives in design projects and the method for this analysis will be the case study from the design perspective as storytelling proposed by Lupton (2020). The aim is to do exploratory research to provide greater familiarity with the problem.

title The Role of Visual Platforms -visual Social Media- in the Creative Design Process
source Herrera, PC, Dreifuss-Serrano, C, Gómez, P, Arris-Calderon, LF, Critical Appropriations - Proceedings of the XXVI Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics (SIGraDi 2022), Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas, Lima, 7-11 November 2022 , pp. 639–650
summary In the current design practice, new digital tools have emerged -visual- also called Infrastructures (Perkel, 2011) such as; Behance 2003, Pinterest 2009, Archdaily 2008, Instagram (2010) -to cite the most recognized in the creative field in Argentina-, which promote different opportunities and support the creative process and problem solving, making it easier for designers to find inspiring material through the Internet. However, very little is known about how these new practices affect professional work, how they themselves see it and the tensions they generate. This article will present the results of a general survey applied to expert designers as part of the first stage of the Doctoral Research project. Which investigates the behavior referred specifically to the use of visual platforms -visual social media- in order to understand, characterize, describe the use and involvement of them within the design process.

title La cámara en la animación de arquitectura. Reconsiderando “la mirada” y el régimen de mostración en el cine [The Camera in Architectural Animation. Reconsidering “The Gaze” and The Registration Regime in the Cinema]
source SIGraDi 2011 [Proceedings of the 15th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Argentina - Santa Fe 16-18 November 2011, pp. 432-435
summary Even though inspired by cinema, architecture animations often oversimplify filmic space, and conflate two distinct concepts: gaze, and vision. Such misinterpretation leads to overuse camera movement to present spaces as if the change of point of view would lead to communicate lived space. This article introduces such discussion in the context of the tableau vivant, a living picture, explores the use of the shot sequence and the use of non-narrative scenes.

doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2011.293
source RESPECTING FRAGILE PLACES [29th eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 978-9-4912070-1-3], University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Architecture (Slovenia) 21-24 September 2011, pp.293-301
summary The purpose of the present experiment consists in optimizing a building modifying its apertures (windows) and its geometry to reduce heating and air conditioning consumption. The optimization is performed using a Micro-Genetic Algorithm (Micro-GAs) programmed in C# embedded like a series of functions into GenerativeComponents (GC). EnergyPlus (E+) software is used to evaluate the HVAC consumption levels of the building. The aim of the optimization is to keep the temperature at 20ºC on the hottest and coldest day using the least possible energy (Jules). In conclusion, this article proposes a new technique based on parametric modelling, evaluation and evolutionary optimization to generate efficient buildings with HVAC consumptions.

title A computational interpretation of ”De re aedificatoria”: Translating Alberti’s column system into a shape grammar
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2011.788
source RESPECTING FRAGILE PLACES [29th eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 978-9-4912070-1-3], University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Architecture (Slovenia) 21-24 September 2011, pp.788-798
summary Alberti’s ”De re aedificatoria” is considered one of the most influential treatises of architecture. Historic approaches aimed at tracing such an influence on European architecture have relied mainly on documental sources. The extent of such an influence, however, remains elusive. The research described in this paper is part of a larger project aimed at using the computational framework provided by shape grammars to determine the extension of such an influence on the architecture of the Portuguese empire in the counter-reform period. The idea is to translate the treatise into a shape grammar and then determine the transformations required for the grammar to account for the generation of the buildings designed and built in this geographic region. The paper presents a grammar for the Albertian column system, focusing on the Doric order. Subsequent work will be concerned with identifying the transformations of this grammar in the Portuguese context.

source SIGraDi 2011 [Proceedings of the 15th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Argentina - Santa Fe 16-18 November 2011, pp. 265-268
summary This present work pretends to advance over the relationship between art and new technologies, as we un- derstand them in the project of CREAR/UNL "Lines on the river: a cartography of the variable". This multidisciplinary, collective creation will capture the landscape variability (identity feature of our islands) as an aesthetic fact. For a period of six months, the successive journeys on the river draw lines that connect points in the island territory that surrounds Alto Verde, and add georeferenced captures, satellite images, artistic records, and photographic observations. The narrative will of this cartography is finally translated in a multimedia product/installation that addresses this dynamic dimension increasing the opportunities for understanding the territory.

source SIGraDi 2011 [Proceedings of the 15th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Argentina - Santa Fe 16-18 November 2011, pp. 298-301
summary Ephemeral art, post-autonomus, unruly, out of the frame or undefined, are the categories which characterize the visual arts today. In that context, we address as case study the work of the Argentinian visual artist Abel Monasterolo. Along with the analysis of their work, we propose an urban intervention in "Ciudad Universitaria", within the framework of SIGRADI 2011. It consists to perform a frieze from the point, the line and the plane. It proposes a visual narrative of "the big bang of artistic creation". This narrative incorporates experiences of augmented culture, like a palimpsest, paradigmatic works of design history. It also includes a scanned self-portrait of the artist. The work of art has a performative character and offers the spectator to participate in strategic moments of the artistic discourse.

source SIGraDi 2011 [Proceedings of the 15th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Argentina - Santa Fe 16-18 November 2011, pp. 368-371
summary Industrial Design manufacturing possibilities have been modified by digital fabrication. A shift from regular to more complex shapes has occurred. During the last years we have been studying cutting and unfolding techniques, in particular the correspondence between cutting patterns and the different types of flexibility provided to rigid sheets. Different types and generative strategies have been developed and tested in their application in product design and in teaching. The enhancement of programming tools will enable experimentations in the continuous transformation of material properties through morphological interventions.

source SIGraDi 2011 [Proceedings of the 15th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Argentina - Santa Fe 16-18 November 2011, pp. 495-499
summary To ideate, to exteriorize a concept, designers talk and put qualitative and ambiguous mental images in external representations. Verbalization on its own or combined with these representations drives ideation. This paper presents in detail the different elements of the design conversation in a remote setting: Collaborative Ideation Loops, Collaborative Conversations and Collaborative Moving. They occurred while using the interconnected Hybrid Ideation Space (HIS) in the context of a multidisciplinary ad-hoc project between two universities. This case study shows the relevance in particular of these elements of design conversations, as methodological tools to better assess and understand the collaborative ideation process.

source SIGraDi 2011 [Proceedings of the 15th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Argentina - Santa Fe 16-18 November 2011, pp. 289-293
summary In this paper, relations between music and visual perception are investigated using statistical analisys of the entailment made amongst them by different subjects in several experimental situations designed for such purpose. The goal, is to discover a set of elements and management mechanisms that are common to both field, from wich it is posible to detect significant constants and discard atypical relations. Finally, we will seek to develop a series of mathematical models that may be implemented as software to analize music and synthesis of forms, and simulate human analisys of relations between them.

summary This paper discusses a collaborative project by RDAI architects, Bollinger+Grohmann and the timber construction company Holzbau Amann. The project is located in a former swimming pool in Paris and it is part of the new interior of a flagship store of the French fashion label Hermes. In late 2009, Rena Duma Architects, asked Bollinger+Grohmann to collaborate as structural engineers on a challenging design proposal within a very short timeframe. Three wooden lattice structures, the so-called “bulle” and one monumental staircase with a similar design approach characterize the interior of the new flagship store. The lattice structures are dividing the basement into different retail spaces. They vary in height (8-9 m) and diameter (8-12 m) and have a free-form shaped wicker basket appearance. Wood was the chosen material for these structures to strengthen the idea of the wickerbaskets and to create an interior space with a sustainable and innovative material.

source ACADIA 11: Integration through Computation [Proceedings of the 31st Annual Conference of the Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA)] [ISBN 978-1-6136-4595-6] Banff (Alberta) 13-16 October, 2011, pp. 272-277
summary In the 21st century, as free-form design grows in popularity, grid shells are becoming a universal structural solution, enabling the conflation of structure and skin (façade) into one single element (Kolarevic 2003). This paper presents some of the results of a comprehensive research project focused on the automated design and optimization of grid structures over some predefined free form shape, with the goal of generating a stable and statically efficient structure. It shows that by combining design and FEM software in an iterative, Genetic Algorithms-based optimization process, stress and deformation in grid shell structures can be significantly reduced, material can be saved and stability enhanced.
