summary This paper presents a research on the use of shape grammars as an analytical tool in the history of architecture. It evolves within a broader project called Digital Alberti, whose goal is to determine the influence of De re aedificatoria treatise on Portuguese Renaissance architecture, making use of a computational framework (Krüger et al., 2011).Previous work was concerned with the development of a shape grammar for generating sacred buildings according to the rules textually described in the treatise. This work describes the transformation of the treatise grammar into another grammar that can also account for the generation of Alberti’s built work.

title Emerging senses from Smart Cities phenomenon
source SIGraDi 2018 [Proceedings of the 22nd Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISSN: 2318-6968] Brazil, São Carlos 7 - 9 November 2018, pp. 434-441
summary The paper analyses the emerging senses from the Smart Cities phenomenon, using as background Lemos (2017), Maia (2013), Rozestraten (2016), Söderström, Paache & Klauser (2014) and evaluating the speeches found in the SmartCity Expo Curitiba. We identified three basic senses: the binary utopia/ficcion, business and informational city, discussed by philosophers such as Foucault (2017), Lévy (2011) e Harvey (2014). The results outline the importance of political role of technology and adverts that it must not be controlled by business. Finally, the paper concludes that the smartest technology is one that opens space to the inclusion of greater human expressivity and subjectivity, not inducing a space of control.

title A representação das cidades na era da cultura digital: ampliação, consumo e produção das cidades no ciberespaço [The representation of cities in the era of digital culture: expansion, consumption and production of cities in cyberspace ]
source SIGraDi 2011 [Proceedings of the 15th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Argentina - Santa Fe 16-18 November 2011, pp. 320-323
summary This article presents a study on the representation of cities in the era of digital culture and aims to show how the phenomenon of self-production is present in the websites studied. At the end, we conclude that cities (through city marketing), local government (through advertising and through the creation of an identity) and citizens (through selfbranding), they create a rhetorical itself and constitute itself as brands. Therefore, we conclude that cybercities has been more an extended space of consumption and production of cities, municipalities and citizens.

summary With the help of Building Information Modelling (BIM), the digital catalogue of all the 44 components of Korean joinery system is developed for the application of their tectonic principles in the design of a transformable disaster shelter. Based upon the components of three primary bracket styles (Jusim-Po, Ik-Gong, and Da-Po) of traditional Korean joinery system in the catalogue, the parametric modifications of the components and their rearrangements are performed for various iteration of the disaster shelter. The usage of Korean joinery system in assembling and disassembling the components enhances the transformability and the reusability of the shelter. This paper demonstrates the computational implementation of Korean joinery system and the design process of a transformable disaster shelter.

source SIGraDi 2011 [Proceedings of the 15th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Argentina - Santa Fe 16-18 November 2011, pp. 500-502
summary Renowned Architecture schools are acting globally by means of international workshops. In these, new methodo- logies of digital parametric representations are applied in urban interventions. We bring forward an inflatable solution for sheltering a sports event, held under a viaduct. In this case, parametric technology was employed in the design, with the use of digital fabrication. Several other interventions were proposed for the same space chosen for the action of a multidisciplinary group of professors. Differently from government actions that usually focus on the removal of social problems this workshop sought a solution through technology, new materials and parametric design.

title Sustainable Conceptual Building Design using a Cognitive System
source Computer Aided Architectural Design Futures 2011 [Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Futures / ISBN 9782874561429] Liege (Belgium) 4-8 July 2011, pp. 297-314.
summary A cognitive system for conceptual building design is presented. It is based on an adaptive multi-objective evolutionary algorithm. The adaptive approach is novel and, in contrast with conventional multi-objective evolutionary algorithms, it explores the solution space effectively, while maintaining diversity among the solutions. The suitability of the approach for conceptual design of a multi-purpose building complex is demonstrated in an application. In the application, the goal of maximizing sustainability is treated by means of a model, which is established using neural computations. The approach is found to be suitable for treating the soft nature of the sustainability concept. Also, the capability of the approach to compare the performance of alternative solutions from an unbiased viewpoint, i.e. without committing a-priori to a relative importance among the performance aspects, is demonstrated.

summary Alberti’s ”De re aedificatoria” is considered one of the most influential treatises of architecture. Historic approaches aimed at tracing such an influence on European architecture have relied mainly on documental sources. The extent of such an influence, however, remains elusive. The research described in this paper is part of a larger project aimed at using the computational framework provided by shape grammars to determine the extension of such an influence on the architecture of the Portuguese empire in the counter-reform period. The idea is to translate the treatise into a shape grammar and then determine the transformations required for the grammar to account for the generation of the buildings designed and built in this geographic region. The paper presents a grammar for the Albertian column system, focusing on the Doric order. Subsequent work will be concerned with identifying the transformations of this grammar in the Portuguese context.

source SIGraDi 2011 [Proceedings of the 15th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Argentina - Santa Fe 16-18 November 2011, pp. 507-511
summary This paper reports on the initial findings of a long term case study. It focuses on the BIM implementation efforts for Brazilian public firms that are responsible for the design, construction and management of buildings, infrastructure and urban spaces. It was postulated that BIM implementation could bring to Brazilian public institutions benefits similar to the ones achieved in the US, yet at a different cost structure. Research follows a mixed methods approach using focus groups and quasi experiments. Results describe obstacles encountered, benefits realized, and process changes expected that result from Brazilian socio-cultural context applied to public institutions.

summary With the background of the reflections of the philosopher Vilém Flusser about games on contemporary culture, and the mathematical theory of Constructionism of the educator Seymour Papert, the subject of this work, a doctoral research in progress, relates to the use of a new programming language in the development of design processes in architecture. Intends to examine and explore the similarity of this language with the definition of "open game" by Flusser, whose use seems to favor so-called participatory methods and collaborative work, in which the role of the individual project gives rise to an activity shared by several actors.
