title Modelagem paramétrica para o projeto e produção automatizados de uma peça de mobiliário: um exercício de aplicação [Parametric Design and Digital Fabrication of a Reception Desk: a design exercise]
source SIGraDi 2012 [Proceedings of the 16th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Brasil - Fortaleza 13-16 November 2012, pp. 561-565
summary This paper describes a design experiment of a reception desk. Automated procedures were used in the process: a parametric design generated the form and connections. Computer models and physical prototypes were produced in order to develop construction details and preview results. We compared this exercise with the method used to design Aviva Stadium in Dublin. It was possible to conclude that the use of a generative method along with automated procedures did not restrict creativity, allowing the quick exploration of multiple design alternatives.

title Samba Reception Desk: Compromising Aesthetics, Fabrication and Structural Performance in the Design Process
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2012.2.255
source Achten, Henri; Pavlicek, Jiri; Hulin, Jaroslav; Matejovska, Dana (eds.), Digital Physicality - Proceedings of the 30th eCAADe Conference - Volume 2 / ISBN 978-9-4912070-3-7, Czech Technical University in Prague, Faculty of Architecture (Czech Republic) 12-14 September 2012, pp. 255-263
summary The present paper describes an integrative design experiment in which different types of models were used in order to achieve a design that compromises aesthetics, lightness, fabrication, assembly and structural performance. It shows how an integrative approach, through the use of both virtual and physical models, can provide valuable feedback in different phases of the design and fabrication process. It was possible to conclude that the design method used allowed solving many problems and had a significant impact in the resulting object.

title O papel das impressoras 3D nas diversas etapas do projeto [O papel das impressoras 3D nas diversas etapas do projeto The 3D printer paper at various stages of project]
source SIGraDi 2012 [Proceedings of the 16th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Brasil - Fortaleza 13-16 November 2012, pp. 580-583
summary This article aims to address the use of 3D printers in the stages of design, development and final presentation in projects of architecture and urbanism. To evaluate the performance of 3D printers, we emphasize in each of these stages of the project, the representational demands and cognitive processes involved as well as analytical categories taken as cost, running time, accuracy and level finish, the representation of materials, scale and size of three-dimensional models and possibilities for intervention in the models themselves.

title Avaliação Comparativa de Aplicativos de Análise Estrutural Vinculados ao Ambiente de Modelagem Paramétrica: estudo de caso utilizando o plug-in Scan-and-Solve para Rhinoceros [Comparative between software for structural analysis linked to parametric modeling environment: case study with the plug-in Scan-and-Solve for Rhinoceros]
source SIGraDi 2012 [Proceedings of the 16th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Brasil - Fortaleza 13-16 November 2012, pp. 348-351
summary This paper evaluates the use of Scan-and-Solve plug-in for structural analysis in Rhinoceros’s environment. A reception desk parametrically modeled was evaluated with Scan-and-Solve and with Ansys. From the results, we concluded that the main difference between the programs is that Ansys allows more detailed definition of the connections between parts of the object. Besides the virtual models, the results were showed with a physical model printed with the rapid prototypes techniques. The paper describes the integration of parametric modeling, structural analysis and rapid prototyping procedures in the design process.

title Exercício Projetual de uma Estrutura de Cobertura com a Utilização do Diagrama de Voronoi no plug-in Grasshopper [Design experiment with the use of Voronoi Diagrams in Grasshopper plug-in: a roof structure]
source SIGraDi 2012 [Proceedings of the 16th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Brasil - Fortaleza 13-16 November 2012, pp. 636-640
summary This paper describes a design experiment with the use of Voronoi Diagrams, a systematic division of the metric space based on a set of points. Automated procedures were used in the process: a script that generated sets of random points and a plug in that automatically generated polygons based on these points. Computer models, scale models and full scale prototypes were produced in order to develop construction details and preview results. It was possible to conclude that the use of a generative method along with automated procedures is far from restricting creativity, allowing the quick exploration of multiple design alternatives.

title Building Information Modeling: Um ensaio sobre as inovações nas formas de representação e gerenciamento de projeto e suas implicações na produção da arquitetura contemporânea [Building Information Modeling: An essay on the innovations in the forms of representation and project management and its implications in the production of contemporary architecture]
source SIGraDi 2012 [Proceedings of the 16th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Brasil - Fortaleza 13-16 November 2012, pp. 491-494
summary This article aims to promote the discussion about how the adoption of Building Information Modeling systems in management processes and three-dimensional geometric modeling can interfere in the design process and construction of complex shapes in architecture. To that end, we assembled a theoretical-practical referential about the use of non-Euclidean forms in contemporary architecture and BIM tools, illustrated with iconic design processes developed by Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid. Finally, there was the importance of BIM tools to a new understanding of architecture, by enabling the construction of complex shapes.

title As contribuições da prototipagem virtual aplicadas ao ato de projetar arquitetura: uma análise sobre a produção de Foster and partners [The contributions of virtual prototype applied to design act of architecture: an analysis on the production of foster and partners]
source SIGraDi 2012 [Proceedings of the 16th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Brasil - Fortaleza 13-16 November 2012, pp. 344-347
summary This article aims to present and analyze contributions that the digital tools of virtual prototyping can bring to the production of architecture. More specifically, this paper will address the use of simulation capabilities in the production process of architecture adopted by Foster and Partners. This article is a product of a master degree research that concludes that the inclusion of these technologies in design practice has a transformative role in the way we design and the outcome of the architectural object, resulting in changes in decision-making practices, leading the creative process towards the new perspectives that technological advances provide.
