title CAD Scripting and Visual Programming Languages for Implementing Computational Design Concepts: A Comparison from a Pedagogical Point of View
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 10 - no. 1, 121-138
summary This paper compares the use of scripting languages and visual programming languages for teaching computational design concepts to novice and advanced architecture students. Both systems are described and discussed in terms of the representation methods they use. With novice students better results were obtained with the visual programming language. However, the generative strategies used were restricted to parametric variation and the use of randomness. Scripting, on the other hand, was used by advanced students to implement rule-based generative systems. It is possible to conclude that visual languages can be very useful for making architecture students understand general programming concepts, but scripting languages are fundamental for implementing generative design systems. The paper also discusses the importance of the ability to shift between different representation methods, from more concrete to more abstract, as part of the architectural education.

title Gramáticas da forma e modelagem paramétrica – uma aplicação na área da arquitetura paisagística [Shape grammars and parametric modeling – an application in the field of landscape design]
source SIGraDi 2012 [Proceedings of the 16th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Brasil - Fortaleza 13-16 November 2012, pp. 397-400
summary The objective of the present paper is to propose a design solution database to help students learn basic landscape design concepts and help them apply this new knowledge by using examples developed by an experienced designer. The system is based on an ontology that contains classes of design concepts and design instances. Beyond the structure to search for design concepts and precedents, it’s also proposed an interactive module implemented in a parametric design tool. This module allows students generate and insert automatically different parametric components, such as a group of trees, bushes, sculptures, in a digital model. The system efficacy was verified in a workshop performed with undergraduate students.

title Modelagem paramétrica para o projeto e produção automatizados de uma peça de mobiliário: um exercício de aplicação [Parametric Design and Digital Fabrication of a Reception Desk: a design exercise]
source SIGraDi 2012 [Proceedings of the 16th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Brasil - Fortaleza 13-16 November 2012, pp. 561-565
summary This paper describes a design experiment of a reception desk. Automated procedures were used in the process: a parametric design generated the form and connections. Computer models and physical prototypes were produced in order to develop construction details and preview results. We compared this exercise with the method used to design Aviva Stadium in Dublin. It was possible to conclude that the use of a generative method along with automated procedures did not restrict creativity, allowing the quick exploration of multiple design alternatives.

summary The present paper describes an integrative design experiment in which different types of models were used in order to achieve a design that compromises aesthetics, lightness, fabrication, assembly and structural performance. It shows how an integrative approach, through the use of both virtual and physical models, can provide valuable feedback in different phases of the design and fabrication process. It was possible to conclude that the design method used allowed solving many problems and had a significant impact in the resulting object.

title A Critical Framework of Smart Cities Development
source M. Haeusler, M. A. Schnabel, T. Fukuda (eds.), Intelligent & Informed - Proceedings of the 24th CAADRIA Conference - Volume 2, Victoria University of Wellington, Wellington, New Zealand, 15-18 April 2019, pp. 685-694
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2019.2.685
summary This paper investigates through a review of the current literature on smart cities, reflecting different concepts across different political-social contexts, seeking to contribute to the establishment of a critical framework for smart cities development. The present work provides a review of the literature of 250 selected publications from four databases (Scielo, ScienceDirect, worldwide science, and Cumincad), covering the years from 2012 to 2018. Publications were categorised by the following steps: 3RC framework proposed by Kummitha and Crutzen (2017), the main political sectors of city planning, implementation strategies, computational techniques, and organisation rules. The information was analised graphically trying to identify tendencies along the time, and also, seeking to explore future possibilities for implementations in different political-social contexts. As a case of study, Australia and Brazil were compared using the proposed framework.

title Avaliação Comparativa de Aplicativos de Análise Estrutural Vinculados ao Ambiente de Modelagem Paramétrica: estudo de caso utilizando o plug-in Scan-and-Solve para Rhinoceros [Comparative between software for structural analysis linked to parametric modeling environment: case study with the plug-in Scan-and-Solve for Rhinoceros]
source SIGraDi 2012 [Proceedings of the 16th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Brasil - Fortaleza 13-16 November 2012, pp. 348-351
summary This paper evaluates the use of Scan-and-Solve plug-in for structural analysis in Rhinoceros’s environment. A reception desk parametrically modeled was evaluated with Scan-and-Solve and with Ansys. From the results, we concluded that the main difference between the programs is that Ansys allows more detailed definition of the connections between parts of the object. Besides the virtual models, the results were showed with a physical model printed with the rapid prototypes techniques. The paper describes the integration of parametric modeling, structural analysis and rapid prototyping procedures in the design process.

title O Algoritmo Evolutivo como método projetual [The Evolutionary Algorithm as design method]
source SIGraDi 2012 [Proceedings of the 16th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Brasil - Fortaleza 13-16 November 2012, pp. 570-574
summary The evolutionary algorithm contributes significantly to the search for solutions to difficult problems of understanding and problems that have more than one solution, and all of which are satisfactory. This method is used by some architects as an optimization technique for design process; furthermore it is a possibility to obtain solutions which may not have been imagined by the designer. The aim of this article is to introduce the main concepts of evolutionary algorithm and to explain its structure. The article ends with example of the application of evolutionary algorithms in solving design problems.

title Exercício Projetual de uma Estrutura de Cobertura com a Utilização do Diagrama de Voronoi no plug-in Grasshopper [Design experiment with the use of Voronoi Diagrams in Grasshopper plug-in: a roof structure]
source SIGraDi 2012 [Proceedings of the 16th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Brasil - Fortaleza 13-16 November 2012, pp. 636-640
summary This paper describes a design experiment with the use of Voronoi Diagrams, a systematic division of the metric space based on a set of points. Automated procedures were used in the process: a script that generated sets of random points and a plug in that automatically generated polygons based on these points. Computer models, scale models and full scale prototypes were produced in order to develop construction details and preview results. It was possible to conclude that the use of a generative method along with automated procedures is far from restricting creativity, allowing the quick exploration of multiple design alternatives.
