summary In city, when temperatures run higher than those in suburban and rural areas, this generate a phenomenon called Urban Heat Island (UHI), this effect occurs, primarily because growing numbers of buildings have supplanted vegetation and trees. The main causes of the different microclimatic conditions in cities are linked among other parameters to urban geometry which influences incoming and outgoing radiations as well as surface material properties, such as color and texture. In hot climates the elevated surface temperatures of materials directly affect, not only the urban microclimate, but also thermal comfort conditions in urban open spaces. In order to evaluate the microclimate variation of urban street canyon compared to the variation of walls and ground surfaces materials, series of field simulation are used by software tool , Envi-met v3.0, in down town of Constantine, Algeria.

summary An enduring consideration within architectural discourse, the notion of performance is intrinsically embedded within design. Over the past several years, architecture has been increasingly attentive to the framework of performance and its potential contributions to contemporary issues within the field. Numerous derivatives of the word perform—for example performance, performative, performalism, performalist—have been applied to architectural contexts within several significant publications providing evidence of the mounting interest of researchers, academics, and theorists to this premise. Within his essay “Architecture as Performative Art,” architect and historian Antoine Picon remarks, “From its Renaissance origins, architecture inherited a concern with effectiveness that other arts did not possess,” (Grobman and Neuman 2012) while also emphasizing that current inquiry into performative criteria within the profession instigates even broader aspirations. Contemporary research surrounding performance in architecture articulates mediated aspirations that negotiate between quantitative and qualitative measures.

summary Evolution and innovation in architecture are intensely related to the rise and developments of technology. Within this context, it is possible to recognize how in recent decades this milieu has fostered the development of new methodologies for urban design and architectural practice, as is, for example, the Parameterization. This paper is focused on the subject of Parametric Urbanism: discussing / questioning the emergence of this new architectural methodology; addressing the factors that contributed to its appearance; and seeking to understand whether the parametric approach has benefits and whether it may or may not be a solution or of assistance to urban planning. The paper provides a brief literature review focused on parametric urbanism and then it presents a practical case study of parametric urbanism: an Urban Plan in Beijing, developed in an academic context, at the University École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in 2012. Having as base diverse examples of parametric urbanism, it is tried to identify/justify decisions defining principles and application guidance for this project. The conclusion presents the final considerations based on opposing the case study with the theoretical approach, seeking to clarify whether this new kind of urban design methodology, Parametric Urbanism, is or not viable.

summary While parametrics and form-finding techniques focus on design as an idea of “search,” it is inevitable to wonder if the field is becoming stagnated, converging on similar “solutions” in an ever-shrinking design search space.Initiatives like Minecraft, coming from video game design, reopen the creative desires of players by providing a rigorous algorithmic set of rules and a fully open world coupling algorithmic design and intuition. This is what J.C.R. Licklider would call “man-computer symbiosis”(Licklider 1960).This paper presents how game mechanics suggest a radically different ethos for computational design thinking. It presents the Bloom project, commissioned for the London Olympics in 2012, which combines the use of industrially produced identical components with game mechanics. This project breaks the idea of serialized outcomes and suggests that within the search space of possible formations, there are unforeseeable assemblies and creative outcomes.The Bloom project has become a new research unit at UCL Bartlett, coupling notions of digital modular materials and crowd-farming for assembly, which positions gaming as a design heuristics to open the field of architectural design.

There is a strong potential for future development due to the visualization and data analysis capabilities of this technology, amongst others (Becerik-Gerber, Jazizadeh, Li, & Calis, 2012). This research investigates how BIM can be implemented in existing buildings currently in operation. Using a public facility at the University of Bio-Bio as a case study, conclusions are drawn with respect the capabilities of BIM in order to optimize maintenance and operation of existing buildings.

summary This study aims to better ascertain the influence that urbanistic parameters exert on the production of solar photovoltaic energy regarding different contexts in the city. Modifications implemented between the years of 2012 and 2016, especially on variables such as Maximum Lot Coverage, Floor Area Ratio, and Setbacks, have been evaluated through virtual models that cover areas in three different city districts. Amongst other implications, an increase in the area occupied by the buildings, as well as a decrease in the distance between them, occurred, causing more mutual shading and the loss of the photovoltaic potential associated with the building envelope.

summary The article presents a graph-based spatial analysis toolset (“decoding spaces”components) which we have recently developed as an extension of the visual scripting language Grasshopper3D for Rhino. These tools directly integrate spatial analysis methods into CAD design software which can have a signifi cant effect on current design workfl ows. However,grasshopper doesn’t only enable the results of analyses to be used in the standard Rhino modelling environment. It also makes it possible to integrate spatial analysis into a parametric design approach as discussed in this paper. The functionality of this toolset is demonstrated using a simple urban design scenario where we introduce the idea of parametric patterns based on graph-measures.

summary Edible Infrastructures is an investigation into a projective mode of urbanism which considers food as an integral part of a city's metabolic infrastructure. Working with algorithms as design tools, we explore the generative potential of such a system to create an urban ecology that: provides for its residents via local, multi-scalar, distributed food production, reconnects urbanites with their food sources, and de-couples food costs from fossil fuels by limiting transportation at all levels, from source to table. The research is conducted through the building up of a sequence of algorithms, beginning with the ‘Settlement Simulation’, which couples consumers to productive surface area within a cellular automata type computational model. Topological analysis informs generative operations, as each stage builds on the output of the last. In this way we explore the hierarchical components for a new Productive City, including: the structure and programming of the urban circulatory network, an emergent urban morphology based around productive urban blocks, and opportunities for new architectural typologies. The resulting prototypical Productive City questions the underlying mechanisms that shape modern urban space and demonstrates the architectural potential of mathematical modeling and simulation in addressing complex urban spatial and programmatic challenges.

summary The use of the method "simulation" of the microclimate for an urban site presents much of interest; because this can serve as us observation and analysis of the consequences of various scenarios relating to the existence and the importance of the constituent elements in urban space. Wind in outdoor urban space is among the most difficult parameters to identify and control field given its instability. Currently, in the field of the ventilation, there are some outdoor spaces simulation tools, used to assess the flow of the wind at different spatial scales. The aim of this research is to demonstrate the effect of the urban geometry of the layout on the wind movement and the outdoor natural ventilation. However, this study investigated the effect on outdoor thermal comfort of a building layouts in a planned residential area situated in the city of Jijel humid Mediterranean region of Algeria. In order to improve outside comfort in this open space, a 3D numerical simulation tool ENVI-met 3.1 beta 4 was used to simulate the urban thermal climate taking into account various scenarios. Thus, simulation’s results are discussed in this paper

summary GENE_ARCH is a Generative Design System that combines Pareto Genetic Algorithms with an advanced building energy simulation engine. This work explores its integration with a Shape Grammar, acting as GENE_ARCH’s shape generation module. The urban patio house typology is readdressed in a contemporary context, both by improving its energy-effi ciency standards, and by rethinking its role in the genesis of high-density urban areas, while respecting its specifi c spatial organization and cultural grounding. Field work was carried out in Marrakesh, surveying a number of patio houses which became the Corpus of Design, from where a Shape Grammar was extracted. The computational implementation of the patio house grammar was done within GENE_ARCH. The resulting program was able to generate new, alternative patio houses designs that were more energy effi cient, while respecting the traditional rules captured from the analysis of existing houses. After the computational system was fully implemented, it was possible to complete different sets of experiments. The first experiments kept more restrained rules, thus generating new designs that closer resembled the existing ones. The progressive relaxation of rules and constraints allowed for a larger number of variations to emerge. Analysis of energy results provide insight into the main patterns resulting from the evolutionary search processes, namely in terms of form factors of generated solutions, and urban densities achieved.

title Simulation Heuristics for Urban Design

summary Designing simulations for urban design not only requires explicit performance criteria of planning standards but a synthesis of implicit design objectives, that we will call ‘purpose rules’, with computational approaches. The former would at most lead to automation of the existing planning processes for speed and evaluation, the latter to an understanding of perceived urban qualities and their effect on the planning of cities. In order to transform purpose rules into encoded principles we argue that the focus should not be on defining parametric constraints and quantities, but on aligning the perceptual properties of the simulations with the strategies of the stakeholders (planner/ urban designer/ architect/ developer/ community). Using projects from the Computational Design and Research group at Aedas [CDR] as examples, this chapter will discuss how an open framework of lightweight applications with simple functionality can be integrated into the design and planning process by using computational simulations as urban design heuristics.

summary In recent years, loose granulates have come to be investigated as architectural systems in their own right. They are defined as large numbers of elements in loose contact, which continuously reconfigure into variant stable states. In nature they are observed in systems like sand or snow. In architecture, however, they were previously known only from rare vernacular examples and geoengineering projects, and are only now being researched for their innate material potentials. Their relevance for architecture lies in being entirely reconfigurable and in allowing for structures that are functionally graded on a macro level. Hence they are a very relevant yet unexplored field within architectural design. The research presented here is focused on the potential of working with designed granulates, which are aggregates where the individual particles are designed to accomplish a specific architectural effect. Combining these with the use of a computer-controlled emitter-head, the process of pouring these aggregate structures can function as an alternative form of 3D printing or digital additive manufacturing, which allows both for instant solidification, consequent reconfiguration, and graded material properties. In its first part, the paper introduces the field of research into aggregate architectures. In its second part, the focus is laid on designed aggregates, and an analytical design tool for the individual grains is discussed. The third part presents research conducted into the process of additive manufacturing with designed granulates. To conclude, further areas of investigation are outlined especially with regard to the development of the additive manufacturing of functionally graded architectural structures. The potentials of the methodologies developed in this process are shown through the fabrication of a full-scale installation. By integrating material, fabrication, and design constraints into a streamlined computational methodology, the process also serves as a model for a more intuitive production workflow, expanding the understanding of glass as a material with wide-ranging possibilities for a more performative architecture.

summary This paper aims to contribute to the discussion and our understanding of time-based mapping of visual information. Our approach is to enhance the traditional contextual static analysis through the acknowledgement of the body and the senses as key indicators of perceptual spatial experience. The time-based mapping paradigms have produced different ways of designing space by leveraging perceptual and other sensorial understanding, leading to the formation of variables (or parameters) which at the same time turn themselves as catalysts for other variables. The potential for a constantly evolving reinterpretation of the perceptual experience and for associated paradigm to shift suggest a multiplicity of design possibilities for urban areas that also need to adapt to the new requirements of contemporary living. In essence, the paper will bring to light the deployment of tools (digital and analogue) to turn static invisible data to dynamic visible data. In other words, we want to explore how the data can be treated as a generative system, enabling students and tutors alike to experience space which accounts for sensory performances and behaviours within the space.

summary This paper discusses the potential of emerging digital representations of built environments coupled with agent-based modelling (ABM). A new set of urban transportation data is provided as an input which is the electric vehicles (EVs) population of one of the UK metropolitan areas. The study is a part of a PhD research that focuses on investigating computer-aided software to develop a virtual route for electric mobility in the North Sea Region. An overview of agent-based simulation platforms is discussed. Electric mobility system has particular paradigms that differ from conventional urban transport systems; a comparison is presented followed by the recommended approach of integrating the two techniques (visualization and simulation). Finally, the architecture of agents’ algorithm within the EVs network is presented through a case study of virtual Newcastle-Gateshead model.

summary Cash-Back 1.0 presents research on the development of methodologies and technologies to simulate the cause and effect of early stage geometric design alternatives of buildings and the real time results upon financial pro-forma. Through the encoding of design rules and their associative relationships to financial pro-forma the research illustrates enhanced visualization of early stage building design decisions and their cumulative impact on financial goals and constraints. The research presents value an associative parametric design process affords often-disparate domains through correlation and visualization. The paper describes incorporation of a feedback loop between pro-forma and geometric models in conjunction with an optimization method. Given the level of uncertainty in early stage design decision making the research contributes partial solutions to the domain problems of design decision uncertainty and design cycle latency and is further argumentation for increased use of parametric design methods and automation to support design domain integration.

summary This paper presents a discussion of contemporary interactive media façades that complements the currently primarily technical framing of this field of research. Media façades, in the form of digitally orchestrated façade illumination, are discussed here as sites of potential encounter and interaction that form part of the public sphere. These aspects seem both underestimated as well as underused as media façades tend to be limited to pre-programmed and primarily ornamental trivial response patterns, or to serving as oversized displays. This paper discusses media façades from an architectural rather than a technological perspective and critically assesses the promises of interactivity as well as implications of such façades on urban public space.

summary A city is a typical complex system that composed of billions of individual factors that interact with each other, and evolve dynamically. Parametric design method considers design conditions as the parameters of form generation, and introduces bottom-up emergent process in computers into architectural design. Because of such mechanism, it is supposed that parametric design can be applied in urban design problems, and brings rationality and creativity into urban design. In the year 2011, a joint design studio of Princeton University, Tokyo University and Tsinghua University is carried out. Graduate students from the three universities dive into the design of a micro-city that expands from Haneda airport in Tokyo bay area. The design studio in Tsinghua lasts for 16 weeks, and the students are asked to develop their ideas in a parametric way, and explore the potential of bottom-up generation of urban design using computer tools.

summary This article is a starting point for the development of experiential urban co-design interfaces to enhance public participation in local urban projects and to be also used as a communication and collaboration tool in urban design. It is based on the previous research involving 3D city models utilized as understandable design interfaces for the non-technical public (Jutraz, Zupancic, 2011), where we have already explored different views (pedestrian, intermediate and bird’s-eye view), as well as the means by which the information obtained from these different views may be combined by shifting between viewpoints. Previous work was conducted in the “street lab” as well as the Urban Experimental Lab, which was developed specifi cally for the public’s participation in urban planning (Voigt, Kieferle, Wössner, 2009). Presented in this article is the next step that explores the immersive collaboration environment 3D ICC [1], formerly known as Teleplace. The environment was developed for effi cient collaboration and remote communication and shifts the research focus towards questions regarding how to employ both labs as interfaces between the non-technical public and design professionals. As we are facing the lack of digital systems for public participation and education in urban design, different digital tools for communication and collaboration should be combined into a new holistic platform for design. A digital system of tools needs to be developed that supports the urban design decision-making process and focuses on improved final solutions and increased satisfaction amongst all participants. In this article the system of digital tools for public participation, which include communication, collaboration and education, will be also defi ned, with its basic characteristics and its elements.

summary Current emerging urban infrastructure increasingly depends on control systems and the understanding and application of these systems in design can create re-imagined urban spaces. The use of this technical fi eld of mechatronics in architecture requires interdisciplinary collaboration and a working understanding of control systems, sensors and actuators. Through a research and related graduate design studio, this paper discusses the potential for reimagining urban infrastructure in relation to the electric vehicle recharging process. The new infrastructure of the electric vehicle recharging station provides an interruptive urban site for applying the technology as well as for developing synergistic adjacent programs.

summary An emerging need for interactive architecture is currently making buildings mutable, flexible in use, and adaptable to changes in climate by introducing robotic systems. However, the feasibility of the seamless integration of building construction details and kinetic robotics has become a critical issue for developing robotic architecture. The objective of this work is to develop a robotic architecture with an emphasis on the integration of cellular robotics with a distributed kinetic building surface. The kinetic building surface integrates an actuating system, a localization and remote control system, which become part of the kinetic building system. This paper presents a systematic framework by reviewing theories and related work of robotic architecture and automated control. An architectural design scheme is proposed to simulate a scenario of application in a physical space. The functionality of the electrical and control system and the integration of the effects of actual construction were examined by a prototype of a kinetic surface. Our prototype presents a feasible construction method, and a prominent energy-saving effect. The potential strength and restrictions of the cellular robotic approach to architectural applications are discussed. The applicability of the prototype system and issues about controlling the behavior of spatial robots are demonstrated in this paper.
