title Agent Provocateur - BIM In The Academic Design Studio

summary Building Information Modeling challenges academia to question the fundamental roles of abstraction and simulation in design education. Architectural education and practice assume a traditional set of visual conventions at varied scales and levels of detail, that when taken in concert signifies a whole, complete idea of a building, a correspondence between design intent and interpretation, between the representation of ideas and the design of buildings. BIM viewed as provocateur to these assumptions provides potential critical analysis of how architectural design is taught. Academia must seek out new design methodologies for exploring architecture that reflect the representational shift of BIM by developing teaching methods that reprioritize ways of seeing, thinking and making. This paper describes a studio model that seeks out new active methods for exploring architecture that embrace this shift by developing processes that provoke novel ways to reconcile the traditions of abstraction and the opportunities of synthetic simulation.

summary The application of digital design methods and technologies related to BIM and Integrated Practice Delivery are altering the how and what of architectural design. The way contemporary architecture is conceived and made is being transformed through the digital methods, processes and applications used in BIM. How architectural education and the design studio model evolve to reflect, interpret, translate, or challenge the multiplicitous and simultaneously variable modes of contemporary practice present opportunity and risk to this generation of digital scholars, educators and practitioners. Might we re-conceive the design studio as a venue in which a critical dialogue about how the many facets of architectural design practice are engaged? The possibilities afforded by BIM and Integrated Practice Delivery and digital design technologies are increasingly affecting what we make and simultaneously how we make as architects. Digital modeling of both geometry and information is replacing (or displacing) digital drawing. We see diminishing returns of the value of transforming three-dimensional spatial/formal ideas into two-dimensional conventional abstractions of those complex ideas. This comprehensive thinking promoted by BIM processes is one of the key advantages of using BIM leading to true design innovation. The reiterative learning process of design promoted in BIM promotes a rethinking of design studio education.

summary This research investigates the use of BIM technology in education and practice of architectural design, structures and installations in buildings. From earlier research pointing the critical linear process of building design, the goal is to map out groups research, and university professors who research and apply this technology in order to know the state of the art in the field of professional practice and academic on the regional scene. The hypothesis is that with BIM, there are real advances in the world of construction civil, but also as opposed to the inadequacies contemporary process of teaching and designing projects.

summary This paper outlines a research project that explores the participation in, and perception of, advanced technologies in architectural professional practice through a sociotechnical lens and presents empirical research findings from an online survey distributed to employees in five large-scale architectural practices in Sydney, Australia. This argues that while the computational design paradigm might be well accepted, understood, and documented in academic research contexts, the extent and ways that computational design thinking and methods are put-into-practice has to date been less explored. In engineering and construction, technology adoption studies since the mid 1990s have measured information technology (IT) use (Howard et al. 1998; Samuelson and Björk 2013). In architecture, research has also focused on quantifying IT use (Cichocka 2017), as well as the examination of specific practices such as building information modelling (BIM) (Cardoso Llach 2017; Herr and Fischer 2017; Son et al. 2015). With the notable exceptions of Daniel Cardoso Llach (2015; 2017) and Yanni Loukissas (2012), few scholars have explored advanced technologies in architectural practice from a sociotechnical perspective. This paper argues that a sociotechnical lens can net valuable insights into advanced technology engagement to inform pedagogical approaches in architectural education as well as strategies for continuing professional development.

summary The purpose of this paper is to analyse, through a case study, the teaching-learning practices in the design studio, establishing a parallel between the use of CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and BIM (Buiding Information Modelling) tools. It aims to comprehend how this transition unfolds and to identify their reflections on the graphical representation of architectural projects, based on the results of students’ works and on the interview realized. The results confirm the transition context, by concomitant use of both softwares by many students, and bring into question the maintenance of products generated by new designing processes.

summary The promising directions in current design practice and teaching relate to creativity with digital tools in the context of building information modelling (BIM), performance analysis, and simulations as well as digital materiality (computational simulations of materials) and dynamics-based behaviour. This line of research combines spatial design with building and material technology in search of effective and effi cient architecture. It reconstitutes questions of what to design by interrelating them with questions of how and why to design. This paper focuses on the appropriation of BIM tools for architectural curriculum teaching, from the design studio to building technology courses. It specifically focuses on BIM-based parametric modeling in discussing construction details, assemblies, and design explorations in the design studio context.

summary The following pages show a selection of studio projects which explore the opportunistic collaborative process between commercial fabricators, material sponsorships, and the institution. The articles speaks about the intersection of design experimentation and significance of fabrication within the contained process of [design | optimisation | fabrication]. Within this process the article intersects between practice, commercialisation, and design-research, into the development arena of architectural academic outcomes. The demonstrating fact within much of the research and development also touches upon intricate details of modularity, and designing with optimisation in mind for the purpose (and ease) of fabrication, prototyping, and ‘real-life’ production. While the focus of the academic studios deliberates and uses parametric design systems through digital and analogue modelling to contribute to a full scale designed installation, and actively working with a commercial fabricator and material sponsor (Luxx Newhouse & LG Hausys HI-MACS). The aim of the courses were to acquaint students with theoretical and practical conditions needed for the creating of experimental relational modularity between geometry, scale, and materials as well as the ability to negotiate between quick intuitive studies and definitive quantifiable decisions.

summary This paper aims to investigate the potential of both open source software and new media (esp. computer vision and augmented reality) as tools for architectural design and education. The examples illustrated in the paper would be drawn mainly from students’ projects done as part of their AA Media Studies Course submission at the AA School of Architecture (AA) during the academic years from 2011/2012 to 2012/2013. The paper outlines the main approaches, which students have chosen to implement, both directly and indirectly, these new media and tools into their studio work at the AA. Section 1 briefly introduces a range of currently available open source computational design toolkits that are deemed useful for quick implementation of computer vision and augmented reality technologies. The related programming languages, softwares and hardwares would also be introduced and described accordingly. Sections 2 and 3 are accompanied with a visual catalogue of students’ projects to better illustrate the diversity in the understanding and implementation of computer vision and augmented reality technologies in architectural design. Section 4 serves to conclude the paper by first discussing briefly the feedback from students at the end of the course before clarifying the context of the research and thus its relation to recent work done by others using similar technologies.

summary The aim of this academic research was to analyze one of the fi rst architectures designed and built with the fi nality to present electronic potentialities to people. The design was developed by Le Corbusier and his studio for the International Expo held in Brussels in 1958, for the Philips fi rm, and it was destroyed some months later, after the event. The research investigated the complex geometry of the structure in order to understand the strict relation between the physical perception of the space and the electronic aspects of them, using advanced technology, but, above all, if it is true that the best way to understand the physicality of a destroyed architecture could be a virtual visit using electronic devices and digital procedures.

summary This paper focuses on information modelling and proposes a system design for an urban model encompassing multi-scale data. The system employs procedural modelling on top of GIS information to allow different simulation tools to interact with the data. This is a promising approach for an urban information platform integrating multi-scale urban information to support different simulations important in urban design. In an initial instance the information platform is used to scale-up and scale-down in information modelling, linking technologies on different spatial levels, and utilizing the advantages of different tools to evaluate the built environment. The platform is applied in Singapore to manage urban data and support urban formation.

summary This paper explores the sonic characteristics of urban spaces, with the application of apprehending acoustic space and form theory. The theory defines auditory spaces as acoustical arenas, which are spaces defi ned and delineated by sonic events. Historically, cities were built around a soundmark, for example, the resonance of a church bell or propagation of a calling for prayer, or a factory horn. Anyone living beyond the horizon of this soundmark was not considered citizens of that town. Furthermore, the volume of urban sonic arenas depends on natural. Digital simulation is necessary to visualize the ephemeral and temporal nature of sound, within a dynamic immersive environment like urban spaces. This paper digitally analyses the different morphologies of old cities and forms of growth in relation to the sound propagation and ecological effects. An experiment is conducted with the aid of an ancient North-African city model, exposed to a point cloud agent system. By analysing how the sound propagates from the known soundmark through the urban fabric, with the wind pressure interference; the paper compares the theoretical concept of soundmarks and the known perimeter of the ancient city

title Resilient Rules - Culture and Computation in Traditional Built Environments

summary This study explores the influence of the socio-cultural rules, based upon Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh), on the complexity of the traditional built environment. This system of rules organized the societal activities, including decisions and activities related to design and construction in the Arab-Islamic city. Considering the city as a complex system, the study will try to show how this rules system made the Arab-Islamic city resilient and adaptive. Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS) are non-linear, self-organizing systems that have the ability to adapt to changing conditions through changing the rules that organize the random autonomous interactions between agents in the environment. This adaptation takes place through gradual gained experience that is reflected in the behavior of agents. This study attempts to interrelate different bodies of literature (Complexity/Chaos theory and built environment studies) in a single framework that aims to show that the socio-cultural rules system based on fiqh was a major factor in the resilience of the traditional built environment. These interrelations are illustrated using a graph called Computational Rules Graph (CRG). The CRG relates the traditional rules system to attributes of complex systems in a graph that can be modeled computationally. Traditional rules (codes of conduct) are proscriptive (non-deterministic), defining what is prohibited, thereby producing autonomous environments where agents had control over their immediate environment. In comparison, contemporary rules of the built environment (building codes) are prescriptive (deterministic), subscribing definite actions that need to take place by the stake-holder (agent) neglecting user needs and preferences. The application of these traditional rules system increased the agent’s autonomy and freedom of action. It also helped establish stronger social networks among agents, which resulted in a resilient environment.

summary Agent-oriented modelling is one of the simulation methods for emergent behavior of a complex system that could be considered for application of urban city structures. Using advanced script techniques, the behavior and evolution of structures in the bottom-up strategies for the development of environment could be simulated in architecture and urbanism as well. The paper presents a research subproject in the area of verifi cation of the processes of spatial and social interaction of the agents according to the logic of defined intrinsic rules of Swarm behavior in the simulation model of the selected area. The research builds mainly upon two selected requirements of the bottom-up strategy: the approach distances to places of interest and mutual standoff distances between urban elements.

summary Space in its physical form provides the major architectural experience for the people inside the space. How people interact with their surrounding space dynamically is a noteworthy research topic. Architectural skin (or “skin” in this project) is the physical interface between people and their surroundings. The skin in this sense represents an inter-media that receive/sense the interactive behaviours of people and react back into space. Further, the skin needs to be mediated and reacted dynamically according to the interaction behaviours. With the case studies, the knowledge of skin design has achieved and then applied to develop three prototypes. In order to achieve the feasibility of skin design for dynamic skins, the multiple channels of input sensors are desired. Thus, a system called dynamic skin is proposed and details of process are evaluated. In order to incorporate the diverse scenario appeared in the cases and prototypes, a distributed system approach such as multi-agent system design is appealing to us. We propose a distributed dynamic skin platform that cannot only provide sufficient interaction between people and space, but also extending such space to the cloud and network.

summary The Emergent Reefs project thrives on the potential that emerge from a coherent utilization of the environment’s inherent ecological structure for its own transformation and evolution, using an approach based on digitally simulated ecosystems and sparkled by the possibilities and potential of large-scale 3D printing technology. Considering tourism as an inevitable vector of environmental change, the project aims to direct its potential and economic resources towards a positive transformation, providing a material substrate for the human-marine ecosystem integration with the realization of spaces for an underwater sculpture exhibition. Such structures will also provide a pattern of cavities which, expanding the gradient of microenvironmental conditions, break the existing homogeneity in favor of systemic heterogeneity, providing the spatial and material preconditions for the repopulation of marine biodiversity. Starting from a digital simulation of a synthetic local ecosystem, a generative technique based on multi-agent systems and continuous cellular automata (put into practice from the theoretical premises in Alan Turing’s paper “The Chemical basis of Morphogenesis” through reaction-diffusion simulation) is implemented in a voxel field at several scales giving the project a twofold quality: the implementation of reaction diffusion generative strategy within a non-isotropic 3-dimensional field and integration with the large-scale 3D printing fabrication system patented by D-Shape®. Out of these assumptions and in the intent of exploiting the expressive and tectonic potential of such technology, the project has been tackled exploring voxel-based generative strategies. Working with a discrete lattice eases the simulation of complex systems and processes across multiple scales (including non-linear simulations such as Computational Fluid-Dynamics) starting from local interactions using, for instance, algorithms based on cellular automata, which then can be translated directly to the physical production system. The purpose of Emergent-Reefs is to establish, through strategies based on computational design tools and machine-based fabrication, seamless relationships between three different aspects of the architectural process: generation, simulation and construction, which in the case of the used technology can be specified as guided growth.

summary What if we had materials that weren’t solid and static like traditional building materials are? What if these materials could dynamically change and adapt to varying environmental situations and stimulations and evolve and learn over time? What if they were autonomous, self-sufficient and independent but could communicate with each other and exchange information? What would this “living matter” mean for architecture and the way we perceive the built environment? This paper looks briefly at current concepts and investigations in regards to programmable matter that occupy various areas of architectural research. It then goes into detail in describing the most recent smart material installation “Resinance” that was supervised by Manuel Kretzer and Benjamin Dillenburger and realized by the 2012/13 Master of Advanced Studies class as part of the materiability research at the Chair for CAAD, ETH Zürich in March 2013. The highly speculative sculpture links approaches in generative design, digital fabrication, physical/ubiquitous computing, distributed networks, swarm behavior and agent-based communication with bioinspiration and organic simulation in a responsive entity that reacts to user input and adapts its behavior over time.

summary An exploration study is performed to investigate how a dynamic (digital) structural expressivity can lead to a new intuitive relationship between the individual user and the building.The study links the structure’s experience which can be described mathematically, and is theoretically exact, to the subjective user’s experience that is studied in the fi eld of psychology and phenomenology. The dynamic nature of their interaction is studied and an interactive virtual design is made in which the structure shows the forces the user introduces and also adapts to them; it enables intuitive communication. This approach fi ts in the global shift from primarily static to a more dynamic, one to one, agent based understanding of our environment.

summary The behavior of a human being in a building, its activities, its interactions with it and with other people are certainly a highly complex phenomenon extremely hard to predict and evaluate. At the same time, the response of a built environment to future users’ needs is one of the key factors of its performance. The Agent-based Modeling paradigm is considered potentially the best way to represent human behavior but, in the building design field, its experiences are limited to representation of partial aspects of human behavior in discrete events. Currently, a more "extended" representation of human behavior able to offer an overview of the human activities related to the building ‘functioning’, is missing,. This lack is due to the complexity of interaction among users and built environment, and to the extensive knowledge, provided by different disciplines, needed to reliably represent it. The proposed research focuses on the construction of a general representation template of user-actor, easy to implement and flexible enough to structure the large amount of data affecting human behavior. The development of the ontology-based template shown in this paper can lead to a user-agent’s entity whose parameters and behavioral rules can encode and represent several ‘aspects’ of real users and their interactions with the other entities (building components, furniture, other people) in a built environment.
