summary Despite the fact that tall buildings are the most wind affected architectural typology, testing for aerodynamic performance is conducted during the later design phases well after the overall geometry has been developed. In this context, aerodynamic performance studies are limited to evaluating an existing design rather than a systematic performance study of design options driving form generation. Beyond constrains of time and cost of wind tunnel testing, which is still more reliable than Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations for wind conditions around buildings, aerodynamic performance criteria lack an immediate interface with parametric design tools. This study details a framework for empirical data collection through wind tunnel testing of building mechatronic models and the expansion of the collected dataset by determining a mathematical interpolating model using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) algorithm developing an Aerodynamic Performance Data Base (APDB). Frederick Keisler called the interacting of forces CO-REALITY, which he defined as The Science of Relationships. In the same article Keisler proclaims that the Form Follows Function is an outmoded understanding that design must demonstrate continuous variability in response to interactions of competing forces. This topographic space is both constant and fleeting where form is developed through the broadcasting of conflict and divergence as a system seeks balance and where one state of matter is passing by another; a decidedly fluid system. However, in spite of the fact that most of our environment consists of fluids or fluid reactions, instantaneous and geologic, natural and engineered, we have restricted ourselves to approaching the design of buildings and their interactions with the environment through solids, their properties and geometry; flow is considered well after the concept design stage and as validation of form. The research described herein explores alternative relations between the object and the flows around it as an iterative process, moving away from the traditional approach of Form Follows Function to Form Follows Flow.

summary We present exploratory studies about 2.0 web applications linked to renewed collective curatorial activities. In particular we focus on Pinterest application, which collectively generates collection spaces centered in a strong both image and digital graphic presence. We analyze practices related to User Experience Design, which refer to all the factors linked to Interface Design, and produce positive or negative perception of the application. We use the Shedroff model (2009) exploring dimensional categories about significance, duration, amplitude, intensity, interaction and triggers or experience releasers.

title Cellular Robotic Architecture

summary An emerging need for interactive architecture is currently making buildings mutable, flexible in use, and adaptable to changes in climate by introducing robotic systems. However, the feasibility of the seamless integration of building construction details and kinetic robotics has become a critical issue for developing robotic architecture. The objective of this work is to develop a robotic architecture with an emphasis on the integration of cellular robotics with a distributed kinetic building surface. The kinetic building surface integrates an actuating system, a localization and remote control system, which become part of the kinetic building system. This paper presents a systematic framework by reviewing theories and related work of robotic architecture and automated control. An architectural design scheme is proposed to simulate a scenario of application in a physical space. The functionality of the electrical and control system and the integration of the effects of actual construction were examined by a prototype of a kinetic surface. Our prototype presents a feasible construction method, and a prominent energy-saving effect. The potential strength and restrictions of the cellular robotic approach to architectural applications are discussed. The applicability of the prototype system and issues about controlling the behavior of spatial robots are demonstrated in this paper.

summary The walkability of open spaces has been highlighted in current discussions about the production of designed environments in urban contexts (Matan, 2011). To contribute to this theme, this work selects the environmental comfort of open spaces as its element of study. The production of urban space was investigated, specifically in regard to urban morphology, understanding that city design directly influences environmental comfort (Jacobs, 1996). This work addresses the geographic context of low latitudes, specifically in hot and humid climate zones of Brazil, and, in this context, according to NBR 15220 (national performance standards), shading is one of the main comfort strategies, so solar incidence was the approached environmental phenomenon. Thus, this work presents a digital system that performs exploratory analysis on the correlations between urban form indicators and environmental performance indicators, specifically solar incidence. The method consists of three steps: urban form modeling (1), indicator measurement (2) and correlation analysis (3). In the first stage, different spatial sections of a city in Brazil were represented in the digital environment (1). This work’s implementation instrument is based on a City Information Modeling framework (Beirao et al., 2012). Visual Programming Interface (VPI) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tools were used, in addition to a Relational Database Management System (RDBMS). Then, for each urban clipping, the values of morphological indicators and the incidence of solar radiation were measured (2). Based on the values of the indicators, an exploration of their correlation was carried out by statistical methods (3). The results of the correlation analysis and their correspondent scatter plots are presented. Finally, possible applications of the results for the creation of prescriptive urban planning systems are discussed, seeking to promote a sustainable urban environment.

summary The potential afforded by the open search spaces of both agent-based models and evolutionary engines have given architecture yet another set of computational tools to play with, yet more often than not, they are used in isolation from one another. This research explores the set of techniques and results of having combined swarm formations, FEM software and an evolutionary engine within a parametric modeling environment such that they induce structurally intelligent swarm (SIS) morphologies. These morphologies are situated within normative architectural assemblies by means of parametric grafting techniques. Savage gothic materiality, as described by John Ruskin, as well as the work of Eva Hesse are referenced as the basis for these explorations. Speculations are made as to refining the engineering capabilities, expanding on programmatic applications and testing integrated SIS assemblies at larger scales.

summary This paper investigates through a review of the current literature on smart cities, reflecting different concepts across different political-social contexts, seeking to contribute to the establishment of a critical framework for smart cities development. The present work provides a review of the literature of 250 selected publications from four databases (Scielo, ScienceDirect, worldwide science, and Cumincad), covering the years from 2012 to 2018. Publications were categorised by the following steps: 3RC framework proposed by Kummitha and Crutzen (2017), the main political sectors of city planning, implementation strategies, computational techniques, and organisation rules. The information was analised graphically trying to identify tendencies along the time, and also, seeking to explore future possibilities for implementations in different political-social contexts. As a case of study, Australia and Brazil were compared using the proposed framework.

title Automation at scale: Geometry, analysis and post processing

summary Our team is currently engaged in the peer review of a large steel stadium dome roof. The roof has a diameter of approximately 300m and rises to over 70m in elevation. In addition to its size, the roof also contains a moveable component which can be deployed during inclement weather. The roof structure comprises of approximately 32,000 beams with 10,000 nodes. This paper overviews our efforts in scaling digital design techniques with regards to automation and parametric geometry to expedite the verification of structural members and geometrically complicated connection nodes. The paper will discuss two realms where automation was deployed. The first realm is the verification of Type 1 node connections where less than eight members intersect at a single work point and is relatively geometrically simple. Type 1 nodes were checked against published code requirements. Type 2 connections consisted of nodes where more than eight members intersected or bracing angles did not meet code guidelines. Type 2 nodes were verified using the finite element method and large scale automation of node geometry creation to structural analysis post processing was employed.

summary We outline issues of importance in relation to tectonic design within the architectural profession and the relationship to architectural education in Australia. Twelve years of research and curriculum development at Deakin University is discussed, involving the creation of online resources and case studies, digitally-integrated projects relating to building construction and design studio education. The ethos behind the Construction Primer of engaging students as ‘amateur researchers’ in a way that ensures ‘that student research work is worth more than course assessment’ forms the pedagogical foundation of much of this work. A model of Socially Networked Construction Technology education has been developed that integrates social networks and the Internet to engage students in tectonic design within and outside the classroom through authentic curricula. Through the use of Virtual Galleries, Blogs, YouTube and social networks, a culture of peer learning and sharing has ben developed. Through shared knowledge facilitated through social networks, great potential lies for expanding the synergies between higher order learning and online resource development for design decision support.

summary The paper recognizes the relationship between social movements and internet how new practices of resistance through technological appropriation (Castells, 2012). This social interaction mediated by technology, understood as socio-technical interaction, establish new dynamics between human-technology-human and other heterogeneous actants (Latour, 2008), such as power and counter-power institutions that also connect to the socio-technical network. Therefore, the studies about digital interaction of the instrumental line are expanded, towards an understanding of socio-technical interactions, from the dynamics of design/use interconnected with cultural, political and economic contexts (Scolari, 2004, 2019), because the technology must satisfy social needs.

summary Artificial Intelligence has a long and rich history in the field of architecture. Building upon this history, we clarify the term “adaptive” and its use within the field. This allows us to explore the application of adaptive systems to architectural design through the prototyping of an adaptive solar envelope (ASE). The building envelope was chosen because it is a common place to address issues of energy performance and occupant comfort and thereby offers an ideal scenario in which to explore the negotiative potential of adaptive systems in architecture. The ASE prototype addresses issues of distributed shading, solar power generation through integrated thin film photovoltaics, and daylight distribution. In addition, building envelopes, being the most publically visible part of a building, play an important role in the aesthetic result of a design. Therefore, conceiving buildings as dynamic systems with the ability to adapt to the fluctuating environments in which they exist opens new aesthetic possibilities for designers. Additionally we present examples of student work created during workshops based on the theme of integrating adaptive distributed systems into architectural design. We argue that with presently available technology, and an increased exposure of architecture students and practitioners to adaptive design techniques, adaptive architectures will soon become a regular element of the built environment.

summary The integration of adaptive distributed robotics in architectural design has the potential to improve building energy performance while simultaneously increasing occupant comfort. In addition, conceiving buildings as dynamic systems with the ability to adapt to the changing environments in which they exist, opens new aesthetic possibilities for designers. As the façade of a building is a common place to address issues of energy performance and occupant comfort, this paper presents a first prototype of an adaptive solar envelope (ASE). Its functions are to provide distributed shading, solar power generation through integrated photovoltaics, and daylight distribution. We describe the interdisciplinary design process, and illustrate the architectural possibilities that arise from a distributed systems approach. The ASE is expanded to work in parallel with an adaptive artificial lighting element. Rather than being preprogrammed, the systems adapt their behavior through interaction with the environment and building occupants. This adaptation to the user's wishes is demonstrated successfully for the artificial light controller. We argue that with presently available technology and an increased exposure of architecture students and practitioners to adaptive design techniques, adaptive architectures will soon become a regular element of the built environment.

summary It is an immutable truth that architecture ultimately exists for humans. Similarly, it is a well-known fact that countless architectural concepts derived and evolved to restrain development, to control building projects and to consider environment are eventually for the benefit of humans. Architecture today, however, is in the hands of a few renowned architects even though it is supposed to refl ect human beings and times and to work for everyone. Is it too much to say that everyone should have a say in the space used by many? In that respect, we have devised DADL System. Anyone, Anytime, Anywhere. The system is an architectural game that stimulates human instincts, has online communities and is easily accessible by Anyone Anytime and Anywhere (3A Rules). DADL System aims to gather users’ ideas and develop architecture, which is essentially enabled by the ‘Advise’ feature. Advise is designed to lead users to think about architecture voluntarily and to guide them to express their ideas. The structure and contents of Advises are very important factors in DADL System. Also, it is divided into two domains, i.e. Web and Mobile, where data exchange is enabled via cloud computing, establishing a base in compliance with the ‘3A’ Rules. The DADL System supports the architecture of everyone without relying on opinions of a few, so as to open the infi nitive potential for communication between architecture and humans, which today’s architecture should advocate.

summary We propose a crowdsourcing simulation environment that brings human intention into the urban simulator. Our fundamental goal is to simulate urban sustainability by employing direct human interaction. In this paper we present a prototype mobile phone application that implements a novel transportation mode detection algorithm. The mobile phone application runs in the background and continuously collects data from the built-in acceleration and network location sensors. The collected data is analyzed by the transportation mode detection algorithm and automatically partitioned into activity segments. A key observation of our work is that walking activity can be robustly detected in the data stream and acts as a separator for partitioning the data stream into other activity segments. Each vehicle activity segment is then sub-classifi ed according to the type of used vehicle. Our approach yields high accuracy despite the low sampling interval and not requiring GPS data that bring minimized device power consumption. Ultimately, the collected information can be translated into real-time urban behavior and will indicate sustainability, both on the personal and the city level.

summary With the development and maturity of various digital media, architectural design process has gained considerable more freedom as compared with modernism. Digitalized virtual environment and advanced industrial machines are continuously been discussed and applied to experimental projects, creating astonishing architectural shapes which have been diffi cult to create in the past. Under such digital architectural trend, this research analyzed various digital fabrication methods through different architectural projects. By comparing the properties and processes of each fabrication manner, we aim to come up with a preliminary framework of an executable fabrication process which synthesized advantages from multiple fabrication methods.

summary The emergence of quasi-periodic tiling theories in mathematics and material science is revealing a new class of symmetry, which had never been accessible before. Because of their astounding visual and structural properties, quasi-periodic symmetries can be ideally suited for many applications in art and architecture; providing a rich source of ideas for articulating form, pattern, surface and structure. However, since their discovery, the unique long-range order of quasi-periodic symmetries, is still posing a perplexing puzzle. As rule-based systems, the ability to algorithmically generate these complicated symmetries can be instrumental in understanding and manipulating their geometry. Recently, the discovery of quasi-periodic patterns in ancient Islamic architecture is providing a unique example of how ancient mathematics can inform our understanding of some basic theories in modern science. The recent investigation into these complex and chaotic formations is providing evidence to show that ancient designers, by using the most primitive tools (a compass and a straightedge) were able to resolve the complicated long-range principles of ten-fold quasi-periodic formations. Derived from these ancient principles, this paper presents a computational model for describing the long-range order of octagon-based quasi-periodic formations. The objective of the study is to design an algorithm for constructing large patches of octagon-based quasi-crystalline formations. The proposed algorithm is proven to be successful in producing an infinite and defect-free covering of the two-dimensional plane.
