doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2012.2.191
source Achten, Henri; Pavlicek, Jiri; Hulin, Jaroslav; Matejovska, Dana (eds.), Digital Physicality - Proceedings of the 30th eCAADe Conference - Volume 2 / ISBN 978-9-4912070-3-7, Czech Technical University in Prague, Faculty of Architecture (Czech Republic) 12-14 September 2012, pp. 191-200
summary In the fabrication of organic free-form shapes in architecture one is constantly faced with specifi c planning and design challenges. This paper examines these problems as well as possible solutions for the design of a completed and built prototype using the example of an organically shaped pavilion made of glass fi bre reinforced plastic modules. The paper describes which adjustments to the original design were required to take the step from “digital physicality” to “physical digitality” to realize a constructive and economically successful implementation. The solutions discussed combine modern digital software methods such as parametric design with innovative 3D modelling principles.

title Running Interference: Complex Systems Intervention as Design Process
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2012.183
source Proceedings of the 17th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia / Chennai 25-28 April 2012, pp. 183–192
summary This paper presents a case study problem statement tested in the design studio with the intent of teaching methods for engaging systematic thinking as a process for deriving solutions to parametric design problems. The intent is to address the simulation environment developed through complex systems and interject a curve ball, or unexpected constraint delimiting the solution as part of the design process. This method was tested through the submittal of the projects to international design competitions. The students were asked to manipulate the competition criteria by appealing not only to the design criteria but also to the juries desire (whether conscious or unconscious) for novel sustainable processes of material usage and program. This material ecology is developed as a method for linking parametric modelling, not as a process for the application of a construction technique, but as a way to pre-rationalise material constraints and discover how program and form can operate within those constraints. In the first year of the studio two of six teams were selected as finalists and in the second year of the studio five of seven of the teams were selected as finalists.

summary This paper presents a case study of the pavilion built with the participation of students during experimental design course of ASK studies, master program in Warsaw. The installation was developed to research programming behaviour of augmented space. Pavilion generates acoustic signals in relation to user actions. It does so, according to the rules stored in a program that can be changed through the user interface. The pavilion serves both as a didactic and experimental installation. Therefore, a single low-tec sensor was invented, which operation can be easily understood. Optical mechanism analyzes the image of a shadow to obtain information about interior use. Components of the experiment are used to control process and establish rules. Mode of action is defined by independently designed system procedure.

doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2013.1.367
source Stouffs, Rudi and Sariyildiz, Sevil (eds.), Computation and Performance – Proceedings of the 31st eCAADe Conference – Volume 1, Faculty of Architecture, Delft University of Technology, Delft, The Netherlands, 18-20 September 2013, pp. 367-374
summary Space syntax is supposed to be an objective method for evaluating spatial configurations. Its contribution to a design process is dependent on the designer’s estimation. The paper describes a generative approach to finding particularly good interventions based on space syntax analyses of axial maps. More precisely, a case study was undertaken through applying such a strategy to improve and connect a segregated street network of an informal settlement to its neighbourhood. Controlling and redirecting movement in slums may cause positive effects. This research is based on and inspired by a consulting project by the company Space Syntax Limited for the Municipality of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in which the consulting company designed a regeneration program for declining informal settlements. summary The purpose of Emergent-Reefs is to establish, through computational design strategies and machine-based fabrication, seamless relationships between three different aspects of the architectural process: generation, simulation and construction, with the intent of exploiting the expressive and tectonic potential of D-Shape technology for underwater reef formations as a design response to coastal erosion. Starting from a digital simulation of a synthetic local ecosystem, a generative technique based on multi-agent systems and reaction-diffusion (through continuous cellular automata - CCA) is implemented in a voxel fi eld at several scales. Discrete voxel space eases the simulation of complex systems and processes (including CFD simulations) via CCA algorithms, which then can be translated directly to the physical production system, which in case of addtive technology can be specifi ed as guided growth.

title Edible Infrastructures: Emergent Organizational Patterns for the Productive City
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.acadia.2012.511
source ACADIA 12: Synthetic Digital Ecologies [Proceedings of the 32nd Annual Conference of the Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA) ISBN 978-1-62407-267-3] San Francisco 18-21 October, 2012), pp. 511-526
summary Edible Infrastructures is an investigation into a projective mode of urbanism which considers food as an integral part of a city's metabolic infrastructure. Working with algorithms as design tools, we explore the generative potential of such a system to create an urban ecology that: provides for its residents via local, multi-scalar, distributed food production, reconnects urbanites with their food sources, and de-couples food costs from fossil fuels by limiting transportation at all levels, from source to table. The research is conducted through the building up of a sequence of algorithms, beginning with the ‘Settlement Simulation’, which couples consumers to productive surface area within a cellular automata type computational model. Topological analysis informs generative operations, as each stage builds on the output of the last. In this way we explore the hierarchical components for a new Productive City, including: the structure and programming of the urban circulatory network, an emergent urban morphology based around productive urban blocks, and opportunities for new architectural typologies. The resulting prototypical Productive City questions the underlying mechanisms that shape modern urban space and demonstrates the architectural potential of mathematical modeling and simulation in addressing complex urban spatial and programmatic challenges.

summary The use of digital fabrication in the production and making of architecture is becoming a prevalent vehicle for the design process. As a result, there is a growing demand for computer-aided design (CAD) skills, computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) logic, parametric modeling and digital fabrication in student education. This paper will highlight three student projects that look to ingrate computational prototyping with digital fabrication techniques in the production of architecture. The goal is to hybridize fabrication techniques of sectioning, tessellating and folding to educate students in CAD, CAM, parametric modeling and digital fabrication. Rather than repeating conventional approaches or recreating from precedent, mixing techniques challenges students to understand the CAD technique or parameters for modeling, translate for CAM production and deal with real world constraints of materials, time and tectonics. In the end, these projects are critical of the digital and projectively speculate on the architectural detail in an age of digital ubiquity.

title Augmented Spatiality
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 10 - no. 2, 275-300
summary Designers have long been concerned with new and visionary types of public space. With the advent of ubiquitous computing, architects and designers have become increasingly aware of the opportunities and challenges in designing spaces and everyday objects to support socially- oriented human interactions whether through spatial or technological means. This paper presents a novel transdiscplinary method for designing new interactive architectural prototypes that promote connectivity and social interactions in the public space in order to address specific agendas of urban interventions. The proposed method was evaluated in a pilot studio, in which students across various design and technical disciplines were invited to propose utopian socio- technological visions for a particular site and to develop their ideas into working architectural prototypes that could be installed at the chosen site and tested by the public. The open brief generated various responses and outcomes in eight projects, of which two are discussed in this paper.

source SIGraDi 2012 [Proceedings of the 16th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Brasil - Fortaleza 13-16 November 2012, pp. 602-606
summary This paper highlights the different interplays between structural and non-structural parts in building artifact as the result of modes of building processes and massing. The massing is understood as processes of assembling material into a body through which we identify with the building physically. In the last decade architecture discipline as the result of technological inventions has faced shifts in the design processes, massing processes and topology of the artefact. In which we witness integral coexistence between the structural and non-structural elements of building. In this paper the seeds of this integral interplay is scrutinised through the study of design and massing processes of a multi-functional pavilion prototype as a case study.

summary The problem considered in this paper is: “In what way do we design?” This paper concentrates on the early creative stages of the design process during which the designer gradually gathers the information about the problem, applying appropriate rules, tools and media. If the tools are chosen as a starting point of consideration, designing may be analysed as manual or digital. If we chose the medium - design may be considered as physical or virtual. The main thesis of this paper is that designing proceeds somewhere in between. “Somewhere in between” means the space where manual, digital, virtual are mixing, overlapping, and transforming one into the other. As a case study the process of designing of blurred function object is presented. In this experimental design studio we paid particular attention to the design process and we searched for the answer to the following questions: how to find an idea (what tools/media are helpful), how to express, fi x and transform that idea? In the paper the examples of students’ work will be presented and discussed.

summary This article refl ects on the digital reconstruction of the Vinohrady Synagogue in Prague, which was demolished in 1951. Based on an international collaboration through the Erasmus program, expertise derived from other Viennese synagogue reconstructions at TU Vienna was combined with a resource organization methodology developed at KU Leuven. The reconstruction process is carried out using BIM software, which poses some particular attention on the software methodology and model structure, but at the same time illustrates the added value of a BIM approach, when comparing with more traditional CAD modelling systematics. Of particular interest is the approach for modelling complex geometry, integrating with more traditional 2D documents and for visualizing reconstruction assumptions within the 3D model representation.

summary This paper evaluates the use of Scan-and-Solve plug-in for structural analysis in Rhinoceros’s environment. A reception desk parametrically modeled was evaluated with Scan-and-Solve and with Ansys. From the results, we concluded that the main difference between the programs is that Ansys allows more detailed definition of the connections between parts of the object. Besides the virtual models, the results were showed with a physical model printed with the rapid prototypes techniques. The paper describes the integration of parametric modeling, structural analysis and rapid prototyping procedures in the design process.

summary Space in its physical form provides the major architectural experience for the people inside the space. How people interact with their surrounding space dynamically is a noteworthy research topic. Architectural skin (or “skin” in this project) is the physical interface between people and their surroundings. The skin in this sense represents an inter-media that receive/sense the interactive behaviours of people and react back into space. Further, the skin needs to be mediated and reacted dynamically according to the interaction behaviours. With the case studies, the knowledge of skin design has achieved and then applied to develop three prototypes. In order to achieve the feasibility of skin design for dynamic skins, the multiple channels of input sensors are desired. Thus, a system called dynamic skin is proposed and details of process are evaluated. In order to incorporate the diverse scenario appeared in the cases and prototypes, a distributed system approach such as multi-agent system design is appealing to us. We propose a distributed dynamic skin platform that cannot only provide sufficient interaction between people and space, but also extending such space to the cloud and network.

title Civic Media Platforms and Participatory Urbanism: A Critical Reflection
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 10 - no. 2, 253-274
summary In this paper, we explicate our research on technology-mediated urban experience specific to two hyper-local tests in which the space of the ‘public’ is transformed into a virtual network by connective broadcasting. The first case study presents collective mapping in Rio de Janeiro toward increased civic engagement and sustainability, the second tests documentation of political demonstrations for strategic and archival purposes for Occupy Boston. Grouped under the term “participatory urbanism,” the projects intend to explore how an individual activates interstitial space (between the physical city and hovering networks, between public and private) by engaging technology and civic media to affect change in the built environment. The physical and virtual environments serve as reciprocal sources of information, engendering a collective practice of shared encounters. We investigate how such encounters of user-centered activity through mobile and web-based media support or implicate the perception and manipulation of the built environment over spans of time and locations, and will highlight qualitative elements of a mobile and web platform designed for successful civic engagement and participatory urbanism.

We conducted an empirical study to observe how designers behave while encountering unexpected outcomes using parametric design tools as well as other kinds of design tools. From our study, there are some indications that the space of possible design solutions of the participants was expanded with the existence of unexpected outcomes. The preliminary result is encouraging. Further studies may need to address experience designers and novice designers separately.

summary The present paper tries to explore the potential of visual-heavy tools in the creation of virtual reality worlds, with an emphasis on tools borrowed from 3d electronic games. Compared to earlier approaches in virtual reality creation the paper focuses on game design tools and provides a basic framework for interaction in virtual reality, based on classic rather than digital representations, which is then expanded using digital representations. In the second part of the paper a game creation tool is assessed based on its potential not only of usability but also on guiding the designer in specific paths to designing virtual worlds. The assessment is based on a case study of interaction design.
