summary Increasingly more architects use programming as a means for form finding and design exploration, a tendency that is expected to continue. Even though significant progress has been made in the simplifi cation of programming languages, complex design tasks might still require large coding efforts. We do not think it is wise to force architects to also become experts in programming languages and software engineering. Instead, similarly to what happened with other design and building disciplines, we think that the future of digital design lies in the collaborative effort of architects and software engineers. In this paper we analyze different situations where such collaboration increases productivity and frees the architect to more creative tasks.

summary This paper presents Architectural software Tool for Structural Analysis (ATSA) which is designed as a software bridge between architectural and structural software programmes. It has been developed at university in cooperation with architects and structural engineers, intended to make their interdisciplinary cooperation more efficient. ATSA is aimed to provide structural analysis of drafts created by an architetct in the early stages of design in order to enable the architect to understand the mechanical responses of the structure to loading, and thus optimise it creatively through an intuitive form-finding process.

summary Every production technique requires a focus on their specifi c demands and possibilities. This paper shows the whole design, optimization and production process includingpreliminary studies, preliminary design, form-fi nding and assembly based on a case study. All needed data for optimization in external software and for digital production is derived from a central parametric model programmed in Grasshopper. The result in a collaborative process between theory/practice, human/machine, software/hardware and analogue/digital is the Sparklerpavilion.

summary Learning in architecture has shifted from an individual focused approach to a larger system of interacting individuals in a situated, tool-mediated and socio-technical context. In addition to developing essential skills to work with diverse design software and taking part in collaborative design activities, learners also need to be equipped with competencies that will allow them to operate intelligently outside of situations of distributed cognitions. The challenge in present educational climate is to develop pedagogical approaches where situations of distributed cognition are not the ends themselves but are the means for improving mastery of solo competencies. The paper contributes to the current discussion about the need to re-orient architectural education and proposes a pedagogical framework for the development of a new web-based teaching/learning environment (socio-cognitive eco-system) as an integrated platform to support both autonomous and distributed learning.

summary Digital architecture is at an exciting but challenging stage of its development. Past decades have witnessed important developments in computer-generated architectural representations. These tools have complemented and, in some cases, superseded the traditional forms of design and communication. In parallel with progress in computer graphics, advances in computer generated architectural representations have evolved to deliver photorealistic computer generated imagery. However, there is evidence to suggest that these advances have not significantly enhanced collaborative practices. It was acknowledged that to address the fragmentation of the industry, a fundamental change to deliver digital architecture was needed. Dealing with the requirements for an improved co-ordination and co-operation between designers and other stakeholders to encourage more integration has therefore become a central issue in the last decade. It was also recognised that significantly more intelligence needs to be brought to bear on the decision-making process if the targets set by the sustainability agenda are to be met. The quest for an improved quality of information and decision making has shifted the emphasis from computer-generated imagery to integrated building information. The recent emergence of building information modelling (BIM) constitutes one of the most exciting developments in the field. It was suggested that BIM will deliver considerable sophistication and judgment in decision-making. This keynote speech seeks to examine the implications of the transition of digital architecture from simulation and visualisation to information modelling. It aims to shed light on the methodological and technological challenges facing practitioners, researchers, and software developers, as a result of the early adoption of BIM.

summary Physical Digitality is the second volume of the conference proceedings of the 30th eCAADe conference, held from 12-14 september 2012 in Prague at the Faculty of Architecture of Czech Technical University in Prague. The companion volume is called Digital Physicality. Together, both volumes contain 154 papers that were submitted to this conference. Digitality is the condition of living in a world where ubiquitous information and communication technology is embedded in the physical world. Although it is possible to point out what is “digital” and what is “real,” the distinction has become pointless, and it has no more explanatory power for our environment, buildings, and behaviour. Material objects are invested with communication possibilities, teams are communicating even when not together, and buildings can sense and respond to the environment, each other, and to inhabitants. Digital is no longer an add-on, extra, or separate software. Reality is partly digital and partly physical. The implication of this condition is not clear however, and it is necessary to investigate its potential. New strategies are necessary that acknowledge the synergetic qualities of the physical and the digital. This is not limited to our designs but it also infl uences the process, methods, and what or how we teach. The subdivision of papers in these volumes follow the distinction made in the conference theme. The papers in Physical Digitality have their orientation mainly in the physical realm, and reach towards the digital part. It has to be granted that this distinction is rather crude, because working from two extremes (digital versus physical) tends to ignore the arguably most interesting middle ground.

title Diagramming in a digital environment

summary Research into digital design environments has explored modelling, generating and testing design propositions. When considering the broader design literature, however, we notice that a significant contribution to design is absent, that of diagramming. In the realm of architectural theory discourse in the past few years, diagramming has been much discussed with many interpretations of the activity. This paper will demonstrate that the development of digital techniques can change dramatically our ability to conceptualise and produce generative diagrams as previously not possible. The paper will follow the work done at the in the Melbourne School of Design. We will demonstrate how students are introduced to diagramming techniques and shown how to formulate a concept, then a program generator and to test a final proposal. The paper will also demonstrate how digital techniques can dramatically change the way we conceptualise and approach design problems. In this repeated teaching technique, we illustrate how digital systems contribute to conceptual diagrams and this contributes to the larger theoretical debate on diagramming techniques by introducing digital perspectives. The paper will therefore contribute to discussion on the ways in which digital systems can be engaged in substantive architectural teaching beyond the rote application of proprietary software and representative approaches.

summary Digital Fabrication has arguably stirred the return of the architect to the long-held position as a master builder. The close engagement with materials offered by the digital fabrication technologies places necessary limitations and calls the architects for a deeper understanding of and awareness about the fabrication realities during the design process. The research conducted uses parametric modeling for the alteration of the design according to a wide range of infl uences, one of which is fabrication. This paper offers a close perspective on some fabrication necessities and limitations that emerged through the manufacturing of a number of scaled models of a parametrically designed shed and a full scale pavilion. The scope of this work falls into the realm of physical testing, tolerance, structure and assembly. It also points out the fabrication parameters that were part of the digital setting used to create the physical models. The paper argues that craft is still practically alive when deploying digital technologies as it has been ever present in the pre-digital era.

summary Buildings are the world’s largest consumer of energy, accounting for 34% of total use. In the United States residential and commercial buildings are responsible for 72% of electricity use and 40% of CO2 emissions. In order to reduce the impact of buildings on the environment and to utilize freely available environmental resources, building design must be based on site climate conditions, e.g. solar radiation and air temperature. This paper presents a web-based framework that enables the production of user-generated visualizations of weather data. The Open Graphic Evaluative Framework (Open GEF) was developed using the Graphic Evaluative Frameworks (GEF) approach to authoring design-assistant software, which is more appropriate than the now dominant ‘generalized design tool’ approach when supporting design processes that require a high level of calibration to the cyclic and acyclic shifting of environmental resources. Building on previous work that outlined the theoretical underpinnings and basic methodology of the GEF approach, technical specifi cations are presented here for the implementation of a Java driven web-based visualization platform. By enabling more nuanced and customizable views of weather data, the software offers designers an exploratory framework rather than a highly directed tool. Open GEF facilitates design processes more highly calibrated to climatic fl ows that could reduce the overall impact of buildings in the environment.

summary The dualities of ‘Humanity and Nature’, ‘Organic and Inorganic’, Artificial and Synthetic’ are themes that have permeated architectural discourse since the beginning of the 20th c. The interplay between nature and machine can be directly related to the 19th c. discussion of nature and industrialism that was exemplified in the works of Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright that spawned the organic architect movement. Echoes of these dichotomous themes have been resuscitated with the introduction of computational and information processing as a fundamental part of contemporary theory and critical praxis. The ability to go beyond simplistic dualities is promised by the introduction of data informed multi-variable processes that allow for complex parametric processes that introduce a range of criteria within evaluative design frameworks. The investigations detailed herein focuses on surface morphology development that are explored and evaluated for their capacity to reintegrate the ideas from genetic and developmental biology into an architectural discourse that has historically been dominated by the mechanistic metaphor perpetuated throughout the modern era. Biological analogues in nature suggest that the zone of decoration plays an important role in the environmental response and climate adaptability of architecture. The building envelope represents the greatest potential energetic gain or loss, as much as 50 %, therefore the architectural envelope plays the most significant role in energy performance of the building. Indeed, from an environmental performance standpoint, the formal response of the envelope should tend toward complexity, as biology suggests, rather than the reduced modernist aesthetic. Information architecture coupled with environment and contextual data has the potential to return the focus of design to the rhizome, as the functional expressions of climatic performance and thermal comfort interplay within other cultural, social and economic frameworks informing the architectural artifact. Increasing the resolution that ornament requires in terms of geometric surface articulation has a reciprocal affect on the topological relationship between surface and space: the architectural envelope can respond through geometry on the surface scale in order to more responsively interface with the natural environment. This paper responds to increasing computational opportunities in architectural design and manufacturing; first by exploring the historical trajectory of discourse on nature vs. machine in architecture, then exploring the implications for utilizing environmental data to increase the energy performance of architecture at the building periphery, where building meets environment creating the synthetic Built Ecology.

summary This paper documents the very first use of the interconnected HIS in a pedagogical setting. For this Augmented Design Studio, where three interconnected HIS were set up, the aim was to foster collaboration and co-design between the project participants as a new approach to teach the virtual design studio and to study the collaborative ideation process. The HIS (Hybrid Ideation Space) is an immersive system that uses freehand sketches and models to exteriorize conceptual ideas. Two innovative research methods have been used to assess this studio: the Collaborative Conversation framework that analyses the design discourse and the Ethnography by Telepresence, a non-intrusive observation method through an unused HIS. The Augmented Design Studio has been observed to help the design students push their project from abstract concepts to formalised concepts because in a pedagogical setting, it fosters collaboration over traditional top-down teacher-student interactions.

Within this process the article intersects between practice, commercialisation, and design-research, into the development arena of architectural academic outcomes. The demonstrating fact within much of the research and development also touches upon intricate details of modularity, and designing with optimisation in mind for the purpose (and ease) of fabrication, prototyping, and ‘real-life’ production. summary This article reflects on the ethical implications of digital technology (DT) in architectonic design. Such a reflection is based on the definition of complex epistemology and the educational ethical reform (Morin 2000). The article ends with a conceptual proposal of an interactive, multidimensional and collaborative environment of design. The goal is to re-set patterns and strategies of design with DT from plural perspectives and poly-temporal creations, all of it inserted in a complex ethical point of view of a contemporary design. summary The information produced for the design and construction of buildings become increasingly complex and are inseparable parts of the whole social making of the City. It have created a transition that should consider the integrative and collaborative aspects the architectural design process. This new transition demand changes in the architectural education in response to the resulting complexity in the design concept, given that the potential of the innovation in digital technologies is not about the generation of forms but the change that occur in the organization of activities.

summary The paper describes a possible way of teaching design studio over distance. Diverse experimental settings in terms of using different technology were tested with a group of students located at remote places. In this paper we describe the use of high sophisticated collaborative technology such as Value Lab in combination with ordinary computing equipment on an individual basis such as Prague Lab. It points out the advantages and weaknesses of both Labs. The aim is bringing facility and transparency into remote collaborative process in order to implement them into regular architectural studio education. Authors developed new application “ColLab sketch” in order to understand, simplify and facilitate digital sketch processes on diverse platforms.

summary Crowdsourcing is a new concept for breaking with the traditional hierarchical model of collaborative design. Crowdsourcing is based on web-based contributions of individuals in a decentralized digital environment that supports the sharing of opinions and creative ideas. This article develops the concepts and issues associated with the possibility of crowdsourcing design as well as discussing its relationship to prior developments of media environments for collaborative design. Three scenarios for crowdsourcing in architectural design are developed as a basis for considering the requirements for the design and function of crowdsourcing media environments in architectural design.
