summary The emergence of quasi-periodic tiling theories in mathematics and material science is revealing a new class of symmetry, which had never been accessible before. Because of their astounding visual and structural properties, quasi-periodic symmetries can be ideally suited for many applications in art and architecture; providing a rich source of ideas for articulating form, pattern, surface and structure. However, since their discovery, the unique long-range order of quasi-periodic symmetries, is still posing a perplexing puzzle. As rule-based systems, the ability to algorithmically generate these complicated symmetries can be instrumental in understanding and manipulating their geometry. Recently, the discovery of quasi-periodic patterns in ancient Islamic architecture is providing a unique example of how ancient mathematics can inform our understanding of some basic theories in modern science. The recent investigation into these complex and chaotic formations is providing evidence to show that ancient designers, by using the most primitive tools (a compass and a straightedge) were able to resolve the complicated long-range principles of ten-fold quasi-periodic formations. Derived from these ancient principles, this paper presents a computational model for describing the long-range order of octagon-based quasi-periodic formations. The objective of the study is to design an algorithm for constructing large patches of octagon-based quasi-crystalline formations. The proposed algorithm is proven to be successful in producing an infinite and defect-free covering of the two-dimensional plane.

title Using Situated FBS Ontology to Explore Designers' Patterns of Behavior in Parametric Environments

summary Current literature suggests that there is limited empirical evidence supporting the understanding of designers’ behavior or processes in parametric design environments (PDEs). This on-going study explores designers’ patterns of behavior in PDEs and its relationship with design creativity. To achieve this, we introduce the situated function-behavior-structure (FBS) model to develop a customized coding scheme for future protocol studies. This FBS ontological model has been adapted to reflect the characteristics of parametric design. We propose to apply the results of the protocol analysis in identifying three levels of design behavior patterns: behavior patterns derived from design processes, behavior patterns derived from the whole design life-cycle and those derived from the two levels of parametric design activities (design knowledge based activities and rule algorithm based activities). Future experiments and subsequent protocol analysis will apply the coding scheme to identify these behavioral patterns. The relationship with design creativity will then be explored by mapping the identified behavior patterns against the design outcome assessment.

title Edible Infrastructures: Emergent Organizational Patterns for the Productive City

summary Edible Infrastructures is an investigation into a projective mode of urbanism which considers food as an integral part of a city's metabolic infrastructure. Working with algorithms as design tools, we explore the generative potential of such a system to create an urban ecology that: provides for its residents via local, multi-scalar, distributed food production, reconnects urbanites with their food sources, and de-couples food costs from fossil fuels by limiting transportation at all levels, from source to table. The research is conducted through the building up of a sequence of algorithms, beginning with the ‘Settlement Simulation’, which couples consumers to productive surface area within a cellular automata type computational model. Topological analysis informs generative operations, as each stage builds on the output of the last. In this way we explore the hierarchical components for a new Productive City, including: the structure and programming of the urban circulatory network, an emergent urban morphology based around productive urban blocks, and opportunities for new architectural typologies. The resulting prototypical Productive City questions the underlying mechanisms that shape modern urban space and demonstrates the architectural potential of mathematical modeling and simulation in addressing complex urban spatial and programmatic challenges.

summary This article is a starting point for the development of experiential urban co-design interfaces to enhance public participation in local urban projects and to be also used as a communication and collaboration tool in urban design. It is based on the previous research involving 3D city models utilized as understandable design interfaces for the non-technical public (Jutraz, Zupancic, 2011), where we have already explored different views (pedestrian, intermediate and bird’s-eye view), as well as the means by which the information obtained from these different views may be combined by shifting between viewpoints. Previous work was conducted in the “street lab” as well as the Urban Experimental Lab, which was developed specifi cally for the public’s participation in urban planning (Voigt, Kieferle, Wössner, 2009). Presented in this article is the next step that explores the immersive collaboration environment 3D ICC [1], formerly known as Teleplace. The environment was developed for effi cient collaboration and remote communication and shifts the research focus towards questions regarding how to employ both labs as interfaces between the non-technical public and design professionals. As we are facing the lack of digital systems for public participation and education in urban design, different digital tools for communication and collaboration should be combined into a new holistic platform for design. A digital system of tools needs to be developed that supports the urban design decision-making process and focuses on improved final solutions and increased satisfaction amongst all participants. In this article the system of digital tools for public participation, which include communication, collaboration and education, will be also defi ned, with its basic characteristics and its elements.

title Custom Digital Workflows: A New Framework for Design Analysis Integration

summary Flexible information exchange is critical to successful design-analysis integration, but current top-down, standards-based and model-oriented strategies impose restrictions that contradict this flexibility. In this article we present a bottom-up, user-controlled and process-oriented approach to linking design and analysis applications that is more responsive to the varied needs of designers and design teams. Drawing on research into scientific workflows, we present a framework for integration that capitalises on advances in cloud computing to connect discrete tools via flexible and distributed process networks.We then discuss how a shared mapping process that is flexible and user friendly supports non-programmers in creating these custom connections. Adopting a services-oriented system architecture, we propose a web- based platform that enables data, semantics and models to be shared on the fly.We then discuss potential challenges and opportunities for its development as a flexible, visual, collaborative, scalable and open system.

summary During early-stage planning, numerous design decisions are taken in an argumentative manner, based on occupation with the building site according to the different infl uencing aspects (e.g. topology, wind, visibility, circulation, activities etc.). In this context, sketches, diagrams and spreadsheets are the workhorses for elaboration. However, some of these phenomena are dynamic by nature, and are rather poorly modeled when utilizing static media. In our work, we thus show how agent-based simulation can be used to compute and visualize dynamic factors, in order to inform the decision process on a qualitative level. As a matter of fact, simulations may be used as a design tool in their own right, for analysis and objectifi ed comparison among multiple design variations.

summary Digital architecture is at an exciting but challenging stage of its development. Past decades have witnessed important developments in computer-generated architectural representations. These tools have complemented and, in some cases, superseded the traditional forms of design and communication. In parallel with progress in computer graphics, advances in computer generated architectural representations have evolved to deliver photorealistic computer generated imagery. However, there is evidence to suggest that these advances have not significantly enhanced collaborative practices. It was acknowledged that to address the fragmentation of the industry, a fundamental change to deliver digital architecture was needed. Dealing with the requirements for an improved co-ordination and co-operation between designers and other stakeholders to encourage more integration has therefore become a central issue in the last decade. It was also recognised that significantly more intelligence needs to be brought to bear on the decision-making process if the targets set by the sustainability agenda are to be met. The quest for an improved quality of information and decision making has shifted the emphasis from computer-generated imagery to integrated building information. The recent emergence of building information modelling (BIM) constitutes one of the most exciting developments in the field. It was suggested that BIM will deliver considerable sophistication and judgment in decision-making. This keynote speech seeks to examine the implications of the transition of digital architecture from simulation and visualisation to information modelling. It aims to shed light on the methodological and technological challenges facing practitioners, researchers, and software developers, as a result of the early adoption of BIM.

title Designing CAAD for Creativity

summary Can we design CAAD to enhance creativity? CAAD is often considered a tool that assists architects in design by managing documentation and facilitating visualization. While there has been anecdotal concern that CAAD inhibits creativity, there is empirical evidence that CAAD can enhance creativity. The challenge is to develop principles for designing CAAD for creativity based on theoretical and empirical research on recognizing and enhancing individual and distributed creative cognition. This presentation describes three concepts that can lead to principles for designing CAAD to enhance human creativity: recognition, perception, and diversity. // 1. Recognition: A framework for recognizing and evaluating creative design, shown in Figure 1, is developed based on research in psychology and design science that includes novelty, value, and surprise. This framework provides a basis for comparing and evaluating the impact of CAAD on creativity. 2. Perception: Perception affects cognition and therefore interaction design is a critical component of designing CAAD for creativity. The results of an empirical study, shown in Figure 2, using a protocol analysis find that changing perception to include tangible user interfaces has a positive effect on creative cognition. These results lead to design principles for increasing perceptual modalities in future CAAD systems. 3. Diversity: A theoretical framework for social and collective intelligence in design show how an increase in cognitive diversity leads to an increase in innovation. Using this framework we can develop design processes that combine the benefits of individual, team, and crowdsourced design ideas, as shown in Figure 3.

summary This paper shows and describes the experience of the ePortfolio implementation in architectural training for promoting Networked Learning (NL). The aim was to analyze the potential of ePortfolio, as a techno-pedagogical strategy to develop and enhance connections and learning integrations among students who belong in the second year of the Architectural Design Studio. The research had a descriptive methodology with a mixed approach over fourteen cohorts of the same training cycle across the years 2012 to 2018, considering a total of 336 students. The results reveal that ePortfolio, conceived inside the techno-pedagogical model, articulates a set of learning connections between students and learning situations and promotes the construction of an active collaboration net, which evidence NL development in the formative process.

summary This paper discusses an educational design methodology for undergraduate studio instruction, which uses a systematic and research based design approach. Based on Lars Spuybroek’s methodology that was originally developed as a one-year graduate and postgraduate studio, a new method for undergraduate teaching has been developed. The paper will discuss Spuybroek’s methodology, as developed for the graduate and postgraduate program, and explain its adaption for undergraduate studio instruction. Spuybroek’s approach is based on a model that starts with research in systems in general that is them tuned to a certain set of architectural questions and developed into parametric buildings in a stepwise procedure by delaying the specifics of site and program.

title Data Sharing for Sustainable Building Assessment

summary Sustainable design assessment requires information, which is aggregated from different phases of a building design, and evaluated according to criteria specified in a ‘sustainable building rating system.’ In the architecture engineering and construction (AEC) domain much of the necessary information is available through open source data standards such as Industry Foundation Classes (IFC). However, no single standard that provides support for sustainability assessment completely suffices as a data structure. This paper explores the augmentation of the Construction Operations Building information exchange (COBie) model, as an intermediary data structure, to bridge between requirements of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system and a building information model. Development of a general framework for data sharing and information management for LEED assessments is illustrated through an implementation of a prototype using functional databases.The prototype checks and augments available data as needed, which is used to populate LEED submission templates.

summary This paper presents the development and implementation of an automatic sustainable assessment prototype using functional databases. For the practical purpose, we use Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) as the exemplar standard to demonstrate the integrative process from building information aggregation to final evaluation. We start with a Building Information model, and use Construction Operations Building Information Exchange (COBie) as a bridge to integrate LEED requirements. At present, the process of sustainable building assessment requires information exchange from various building professionals. However, there is no procedure to manage, or use, information pertaining to sustainability. In our research, we translate rules from LEED into computable formulas and develop a prototype application to produce templates for LEED submission.

summary The three-dimensional reconstitution of cities and urban tissues was the subject of several studies and researches. In order to obtain the acquisition of the geometry of architectural or urban sets, some studies are based on Photogrammetric or on computer vision. Others have focused on the development of tools of acquisition from a laser providing a 3D scatter plot. Some of them yet focused towards the development of CAD software. The automatic generation for morphological 3D representation based on the exploitation of the architectural knowledge basis is also an option. This type of work becomes more relevant and legitimate when it concerns old cities in state of ruin or more simply missing whose remains only prints or literary descriptions similar to our case study; the old town of Jijel that many people ignore its existence. The aim of this work is to achieve a 3D reconstitution of buildings of this town based on historical documents, mostly prints, digitized old maps and plans, as well as literary texts (tales of travelers, military records, and history books). The method developed can solve and generate possible urban volumes in the most frequent cases. The 3D model obtained, despite its geometric simplicity, can view the city from different angles and open new opportunities for research in history, architecture and town planning.

summary This article refl ects on the digital reconstruction of the Vinohrady Synagogue in Prague, which was demolished in 1951. Based on an international collaboration through the Erasmus program, expertise derived from other Viennese synagogue reconstructions at TU Vienna was combined with a resource organization methodology developed at KU Leuven. The reconstruction process is carried out using BIM software, which poses some particular attention on the software methodology and model structure, but at the same time illustrates the added value of a BIM approach, when comparing with more traditional CAD modelling systematics. Of particular interest is the approach for modelling complex geometry, integrating with more traditional 2D documents and for visualizing reconstruction assumptions within the 3D model representation.

title Resilient Rules - Culture and Computation in Traditional Built Environments

summary This study explores the influence of the socio-cultural rules, based upon Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh), on the complexity of the traditional built environment. This system of rules organized the societal activities, including decisions and activities related to design and construction in the Arab-Islamic city. Considering the city as a complex system, the study will try to show how this rules system made the Arab-Islamic city resilient and adaptive. Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS) are non-linear, self-organizing systems that have the ability to adapt to changing conditions through changing the rules that organize the random autonomous interactions between agents in the environment. This adaptation takes place through gradual gained experience that is reflected in the behavior of agents. This study attempts to interrelate different bodies of literature (Complexity/Chaos theory and built environment studies) in a single framework that aims to show that the socio-cultural rules system based on fiqh was a major factor in the resilience of the traditional built environment. These interrelations are illustrated using a graph called Computational Rules Graph (CRG). The CRG relates the traditional rules system to attributes of complex systems in a graph that can be modeled computationally. Traditional rules (codes of conduct) are proscriptive (non-deterministic), defining what is prohibited, thereby producing autonomous environments where agents had control over their immediate environment. In comparison, contemporary rules of the built environment (building codes) are prescriptive (deterministic), subscribing definite actions that need to take place by the stake-holder (agent) neglecting user needs and preferences. The application of these traditional rules system increased the agent’s autonomy and freedom of action. It also helped establish stronger social networks among agents, which resulted in a resilient environment.

We developed a general model of an Electronic Tourist Guide and a specific prototype for the Caminhos de Pedra itinerary, a touristic region in the city of Bento Gonçalves in the Rio Grande do Sul state.

summary The indoor climate in buildings of the museum is related to two important requirements: preservation of collections and comfort of users. To provide environmental compatibility through a volumetric energy efficient, this paper proposes a parametric model which is based on a study of three buildings in this climate. Through surveys, analysis and interviews with users in the buildings of Brazilian Museum of Sculpture in São Paulo, Oscar Niemeyer Museum in Curitiba and Iberê Camargo Foundation in Porto Alegre present relations of size, form factor and energy efficiency for buildings of museum art environmentally suitable climate.

summary Nowadays, the BIM (Building Information Modelling) paradigm is a central topic in the CAAD community. Next to the commercial solutions, the IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) have emerged as the best open standard candidate for BIM interoperability. Despite the efforts of the community for promoting IFC over the last 15 years, it seems that its practical adoption in real-life projects has been very limited. The goal of this article is to explore how useful IFC can be today and to provide the reader with some advice for an effective adoption of IFC. Over the last year, we have conducted a project aiming at acquiring a sound understanding of IFC. It was made of two complementary investigations. On one hand, we have focused on the commercial modelling tools and the IFC support they were offering. On the other hand, we have focused on the IFC-based software developments. We have developed a tool converting IFC files into a dedicated thermal assessment based model. We will summarise the experience we have acquired in this project into some advice for users migrating to IFC. Our goal is to confront the practical aspects of the IFC developments, with both the theoretical ambitions and the commercial support currently available.

summary Rationalisation of architectural design is paramount to manufacturing and its construction. This paper presents a methodology of rationalisation of building envelope geometry. We discuss methods for understanding and addressing design complexity; review two theoretical models of rationalisation: the pre-rational and post-rational design principles; illustrate their benefits and limitations and demonstrate their meeting point proposing an integrated performance-oriented model for analysis and design of building envelopes, using digital design techniques.
