title Augmenting Architecture Through Desktop Manufacturing

summary Personal desktop manufacturing, with its roots in hacker culture, is on the cusp of exploding into the main stream due to the advent of affordable personal 3D printers.This paper is an exploration of these advances in desktop manufacturing technology and their impact on our relationship with products and the built environment.The paper draws parallels to the personal computing and desktop publishing revolutions that offer clues to the future of personal desktop manufacturing. Four major themes have emerged from this exploration: Personal empowerment, remote printing and collaboration, full-scale digital construction, and, most intriguingly, architectural prosthetics. Based on an open-source philosophy and creative commons licensing, desktop manufacturing is redefining our relationship with large manufacturers and is beginning to convert us back from a consumerist culture into a creator one.

summary This paper presents a currently on-going research trajectory, investigating integrated design and build work-fl ows using generative design strategies and custom built fabrication devices. The aim of the research, which is being developed through a series of experiments and workshops, is to explore scenarios in which these work-flows can produce emergent architectural structures which are highly adapted towards the intended performance within their specifi c context and site. The research has produced a number of installations and prototypical structures which test the practical and theoretical dimensions of the methodology explored. This paper will introduce intriguing new scenarios in which the architects’ role is focused on an indirect, advanced level of control of the process of design, allowing for a more open-ended method of negotiation between structure, users and environment.

title Resilient Rules - Culture and Computation in Traditional Built Environments

summary This study explores the influence of the socio-cultural rules, based upon Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh), on the complexity of the traditional built environment. This system of rules organized the societal activities, including decisions and activities related to design and construction in the Arab-Islamic city. Considering the city as a complex system, the study will try to show how this rules system made the Arab-Islamic city resilient and adaptive. Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS) are non-linear, self-organizing systems that have the ability to adapt to changing conditions through changing the rules that organize the random autonomous interactions between agents in the environment. This adaptation takes place through gradual gained experience that is reflected in the behavior of agents. This study attempts to interrelate different bodies of literature (Complexity/Chaos theory and built environment studies) in a single framework that aims to show that the socio-cultural rules system based on fiqh was a major factor in the resilience of the traditional built environment. These interrelations are illustrated using a graph called Computational Rules Graph (CRG). The CRG relates the traditional rules system to attributes of complex systems in a graph that can be modeled computationally. Traditional rules (codes of conduct) are proscriptive (non-deterministic), defining what is prohibited, thereby producing autonomous environments where agents had control over their immediate environment. In comparison, contemporary rules of the built environment (building codes) are prescriptive (deterministic), subscribing definite actions that need to take place by the stake-holder (agent) neglecting user needs and preferences. The application of these traditional rules system increased the agent’s autonomy and freedom of action. It also helped establish stronger social networks among agents, which resulted in a resilient environment.

title Civic Media Platforms and Participatory Urbanism: A Critical Reflection

summary In this paper, we explicate our research on technology-mediated urban experience specific to two hyper-local tests in which the space of the ‘public’ is transformed into a virtual network by connective broadcasting. The first case study presents collective mapping in Rio de Janeiro toward increased civic engagement and sustainability, the second tests documentation of political demonstrations for strategic and archival purposes for Occupy Boston. Grouped under the term “participatory urbanism,” the projects intend to explore how an individual activates interstitial space (between the physical city and hovering networks, between public and private) by engaging technology and civic media to affect change in the built environment. The physical and virtual environments serve as reciprocal sources of information, engendering a collective practice of shared encounters. We investigate how such encounters of user-centered activity through mobile and web-based media support or implicate the perception and manipulation of the built environment over spans of time and locations, and will highlight qualitative elements of a mobile and web platform designed for successful civic engagement and participatory urbanism.

summary This paper reports on the initial findings of an Undergraduate Research on Social Housing Program implemented in the city of Limeira, making use of a Building Information Modeling platform as a methodological procedure. The research was designed to enable students to better understand BIM in a hands-on, collaborative environment. A virtual information model of Housing Units and Housing Complex was created, and represents their real physical building components. The initial results portray BIM as especially useful to Civil Construction students, as fostering an integral environment where students are readily enabled to synthesize the knowledge of the art of construction.

summary With the invention of computers, Architecture and other Engineering disciplines have undergone revolutionary developments offering new opportunities for improving efficiency and opening new frontiers for creativity. For example in architecture and urban planning, the discussions have been extended from conventional writings to cover cyberspace, virtual architecture and digital city. Moreover, computers have helped in the realization of many complex projects that would be inconceivable with traditional drawing techniques. This is clearly demonstrated in the works of Frank Gehry's, Zaha Hadid, Daniel Libeskind and many others. In deed, digital techniques have changed the design creative process and how the architects think. Traditionally the structured development architectural ideas from 2D drawings (plans, sections, elevations) towards 3D resolution has been replaced by more interactive approach of 2D & 3D. The changes that digital techniques have brought to the field of Architecture; including practice and education, can obviously be viewed from different angles and incite many discussions and questions. However, the purpose of this presentation is to discuss the role of digital techniques within the overall framework of project management in Gulf Housing Engineering. It starts the discussion with a brief on architecture and digital techniques in the Gulf Region, especially during the “boom period”; a period characterized by rapid production of buildings relying heavily on virtual images. It is against this background, the role of digital techniques is evaluated from a practice point of view. In fact in GHE, digital means are integral parts of the holistic project delivery process starting form initiation, to various design stages to construction ending with project completion. In this process emphasis is paid to the inter-relationships between IT Systems and Quality Control which in turn facilitate measuring, monitoring and reporting on various managerial, technical and design and budgetary aspects of the project. The presentation is supported by real case studies of GHE portfolio. It emphasizes that digital techniques should be an integral part of an overall process and should be seen as means to enhance efficiency and creativity; and should contribute to the betterment of the built environment

summary The Emergent Reefs project thrives on the potential that emerge from a coherent utilization of the environment’s inherent ecological structure for its own transformation and evolution, using an approach based on digitally simulated ecosystems and sparkled by the possibilities and potential of large-scale 3D printing technology. Considering tourism as an inevitable vector of environmental change, the project aims to direct its potential and economic resources towards a positive transformation, providing a material substrate for the human-marine ecosystem integration with the realization of spaces for an underwater sculpture exhibition. Such structures will also provide a pattern of cavities which, expanding the gradient of microenvironmental conditions, break the existing homogeneity in favor of systemic heterogeneity, providing the spatial and material preconditions for the repopulation of marine biodiversity. Starting from a digital simulation of a synthetic local ecosystem, a generative technique based on multi-agent systems and continuous cellular automata (put into practice from the theoretical premises in Alan Turing’s paper “The Chemical basis of Morphogenesis” through reaction-diffusion simulation) is implemented in a voxel field at several scales giving the project a twofold quality: the implementation of reaction diffusion generative strategy within a non-isotropic 3-dimensional field and integration with the large-scale 3D printing fabrication system patented by D-Shape®. Out of these assumptions and in the intent of exploiting the expressive and tectonic potential of such technology, the project has been tackled exploring voxel-based generative strategies. Working with a discrete lattice eases the simulation of complex systems and processes across multiple scales (including non-linear simulations such as Computational Fluid-Dynamics) starting from local interactions using, for instance, algorithms based on cellular automata, which then can be translated directly to the physical production system. The purpose of Emergent-Reefs is to establish, through strategies based on computational design tools and machine-based fabrication, seamless relationships between three different aspects of the architectural process: generation, simulation and construction, which in the case of the used technology can be specified as guided growth.

summary In this paper, viable applications of mobile robotic units on construction sites are explored. While expanding on potential objectives for in-situ fabrication in the construction sector, the intention is also to build upon innovative man-machine interaction paradigms to deal with the imprecision and tolerances often faced on construction sites. By combining the precision of the machine with the cognitive environmental human skills, a simple but effective mobile fabrication system is experimented for the building of algorithmically designed additive assemblies that would not be possible through conventional manual methods if the large amount of individual building blocks and the size of the structure to be built are taken into account. It is believed that this new approach to man-machine collaboration, aimed at a deeper integration of human ability with the strengths of digitally controlled machines, will result in advances in the construction sector, thus opening up new design and application fields for architects and planners.

title Robotic Construction by Contour Crafting: The Case of Lunar Construction

summary Contour Crafting is a digitally controlled construction process invented by Professor Behrokh Khoshnevis that fabricates components directly from computer models, using layered fabrication technology. By obviating the need for formwork used in traditional concrete construction, CC can reduce costs and construction times significantly. The technique has great potential as a robotic form of construction reliant on relatively minimal human labor as a form of construction in relatively hazardous environments, such as the Moon with its radiation levels that can prove highly damaging. Current research funded by NASA has been exploring the potential for using CC on the Moon to build structures making use of readily available regolith that is found in great abundance on the surface of the Moon. This article offers an overview of this research and evaluates the merits of using CC on the Moon.

summary Morphfaux is an applied research project that revisits the virtually lost craft of plaster to explore its potential for producing thickened architectural environments through the use of contemporary digital technology. The research challenges the flatness of modern, standardized dry wall construction and explores plaster’s malleability as a material that can be applied thick and thin, finished to appear smooth or textured, and tooled while liquid or cured. If the invention of industrialized modern building products such as drywall led to the demise of the plasterer as a tradesperson, our research seeks alliances between the abilities of the human hand and those of automation. By transforming historic methods using new robotic tools, Morphfaux has broadened the possibilities of architectural plaster. While our research has produced forms not possible by human skill alone, it also clearly illustrates a symbiotic relationship between the human body and robotic machines where human dexterity and robotic precision are choreographed in the production of innovative plastering techniques.

summary Compared to other industries, the built environment is still the largest and one of the least efficient consumers of resources. Existing measures and procedures for resource recovery and reuse are focused on the demolition phase, when the composition of materials and structures is mostly unknown and hard to be analysed. Therefore, these measures are somewhat inefficient for overall high-rate material recovery. The enhancement of the integrated semantic planning process by the introduction of the IFC unified data standard and BIM technology is a first-time opportunity to track, analyse, document and simulate all relevant players, parameters and processes with an impact on the resource and material efficiency through the entire life cycle of a building in the design phase of a building project. The presented work explores the potential of IFC to serve as a framework for achieving a higher material efficiency in the built environment. A proposed design check approach for the simulation and optimisation of material efficiency in a building over its life cycle is based on a system of key parameters and actions organised in logic trees. The parameters and actions are translated into IFC objects. Additionally required IFC objects and properties are identified and described.

summary Despite glass’s ubiquity in the modern built environment it is rarely applied in applications requiring complex curvature. The high temperatures and complexity of techniques utilized in forming curved glass panels are typically very expensive to employ, requiring dedicated hard-tooling which ultimately limits the formal variation that can be achieved. This combination of economic and manufacturing barriers limits both the formal possibilities and potentially the overall envelope-performance characteristics of the glazing system. This research investigates a methodology for utilizing reconfigurable tooling to form glass into doubly curved geometries, offering the potential for improved structural and environmental performance in a material that has remained largely unchanged since the advent of its industrial manufacturing. A custom built forming kiln has been developed and tested, integrated through a parametric modeling workflow to provide manufacturing constraint feedback directly into the design process. The research also investigates the post-form trimming of glass utilizing robotic abrasive waterjet cutting, allowing for the output of machine control data directly from the digital model. The potentials of the methodologies developed in this process are shown through the fabrication of a full-scale installation. By integrating material, fabrication, and design constraints into a streamlined computational methodology, the process also serves as a model for a more intuitive production workflow, expanding the understanding of glass as a material with wide-ranging possibilities for a more performative architecture.

summary The use of computer-aided design combined with robotics and evolutionary principles of optimization, during the architectural design process, is discussed in this paper. The research is based on the examples of four case studies out of six projects designed during the Experimental Design Studio: ROBO Studio and a parallel seminar on optimization techniques on Architecture for Society of Knowledge Master course at Warsaw University of Technology, Faculty of Architecture. The project’s main goal was to combine robotic prototypes construction with an optimization process executed in parallel within one design procedure. The results of the course and the discussion about the impact of both factors on the architectural design process are presented in this paper.

summary Artificial Intelligence has a long and rich history in the field of architecture. Building upon this history, we clarify the term “adaptive” and its use within the field. This allows us to explore the application of adaptive systems to architectural design through the prototyping of an adaptive solar envelope (ASE). The building envelope was chosen because it is a common place to address issues of energy performance and occupant comfort and thereby offers an ideal scenario in which to explore the negotiative potential of adaptive systems in architecture. The ASE prototype addresses issues of distributed shading, solar power generation through integrated thin film photovoltaics, and daylight distribution. In addition, building envelopes, being the most publically visible part of a building, play an important role in the aesthetic result of a design. Therefore, conceiving buildings as dynamic systems with the ability to adapt to the fluctuating environments in which they exist opens new aesthetic possibilities for designers. Additionally we present examples of student work created during workshops based on the theme of integrating adaptive distributed systems into architectural design. We argue that with presently available technology, and an increased exposure of architecture students and practitioners to adaptive design techniques, adaptive architectures will soon become a regular element of the built environment.

summary The integration of adaptive distributed robotics in architectural design has the potential to improve building energy performance while simultaneously increasing occupant comfort. In addition, conceiving buildings as dynamic systems with the ability to adapt to the changing environments in which they exist, opens new aesthetic possibilities for designers. As the façade of a building is a common place to address issues of energy performance and occupant comfort, this paper presents a first prototype of an adaptive solar envelope (ASE). Its functions are to provide distributed shading, solar power generation through integrated photovoltaics, and daylight distribution. We describe the interdisciplinary design process, and illustrate the architectural possibilities that arise from a distributed systems approach. The ASE is expanded to work in parallel with an adaptive artificial lighting element. Rather than being preprogrammed, the systems adapt their behavior through interaction with the environment and building occupants. This adaptation to the user's wishes is demonstrated successfully for the artificial light controller. We argue that with presently available technology and an increased exposure of architecture students and practitioners to adaptive design techniques, adaptive architectures will soon become a regular element of the built environment.

summary We propose a crowdsourcing simulation environment that brings human intention into the urban simulator. Our fundamental goal is to simulate urban sustainability by employing direct human interaction. In this paper we present a prototype mobile phone application that implements a novel transportation mode detection algorithm. The mobile phone application runs in the background and continuously collects data from the built-in acceleration and network location sensors. The collected data is analyzed by the transportation mode detection algorithm and automatically partitioned into activity segments. A key observation of our work is that walking activity can be robustly detected in the data stream and acts as a separator for partitioning the data stream into other activity segments. Each vehicle activity segment is then sub-classifi ed according to the type of used vehicle. Our approach yields high accuracy despite the low sampling interval and not requiring GPS data that bring minimized device power consumption. Ultimately, the collected information can be translated into real-time urban behavior and will indicate sustainability, both on the personal and the city level.

summary The behavior of a human being in a building, its activities, its interactions with it and with other people are certainly a highly complex phenomenon extremely hard to predict and evaluate. At the same time, the response of a built environment to future users’ needs is one of the key factors of its performance. The Agent-based Modeling paradigm is considered potentially the best way to represent human behavior but, in the building design field, its experiences are limited to representation of partial aspects of human behavior in discrete events. Currently, a more "extended" representation of human behavior able to offer an overview of the human activities related to the building ‘functioning’, is missing,. This lack is due to the complexity of interaction among users and built environment, and to the extensive knowledge, provided by different disciplines, needed to reliably represent it. The proposed research focuses on the construction of a general representation template of user-actor, easy to implement and flexible enough to structure the large amount of data affecting human behavior. The development of the ontology-based template shown in this paper can lead to a user-agent’s entity whose parameters and behavioral rules can encode and represent several ‘aspects’ of real users and their interactions with the other entities (building components, furniture, other people) in a built environment.

title Parametricism: Indian social need in complexity and chaos

summary Indian society living in its physical context and administrative boundaries is complex. The contemporary built environment imitating perceived advance technology where development is purely measured by material consumption is chaos. The present approach to meet dynamic and diverse demands emerging from the complexity and economical boom is fragmented and superficial. The challenge is to find order – the hidden patterns - through an approach that analysis and interprets the complexity with the holistic vision to offer contextual variety inclusive of qualitative richness in the existing chaos. Considering that Parametricism is based on algorithms and mathematics it is generally understood as quantification where as it is also important to understand its qualitative impact. The paper is an inquiry on qualitative gains of Parametricism that helps shaping society in Indian context. This is demonstrated by bringing forward understanding on qualitative gains of Parametricism exemplified with an academic exploration and inter-relating them with Indian examples to showcase the opportunities.

summary This paper presents a currently ongoing research trajectory, investigating integrated design and build workflows using generative design strategies and custom built fabrication devices. The aim of the research, which is being developed through a series of experiments and workshops, is to explore scenarios in which these work-flows can produce emergent architectural structures which are highly adapted towards the intended performance within their specific context and site. The research has produced a number of installations and prototypical structures which explore practical and theoretical dimensions of the methodology explored. It introduces intriguing new scenarios in which the architects' role is focused on the indirect control of the process of design, allowing for a more open-ended process of negotiation between structure, users and environment.

summary Lack of affordable housing is a worldwide problem. Rapid urbanization, rural exodus, and poor governance policies have contributed to the problem and, in response, low-income populations resort to self-construction. The result are informal settlements located predominantly in marginalized urban areas (United Nations, 2015) that develop with neither urban infrastructure nor compliance with building and planning codes (Lall et al., 2006; Patel et al., 2018; United Nations Human Settlements Programme, 2012) and, consequently, offer a poor-quality built environment. The goal of this paper is to methodologically identify physical aspects of such built environments that could be improved. We evaluate a case study, the Santa Marta favela in Brazil, using a holistic housing-quality assessment tool and local building and planning codes as reference. Our results identify the physical characteristics with lower quality standards in the case study and demonstrate the efficacy of the methodology introduced for this purpose.
