summary This paper presents a general 3D shape grammar interpreter named GRAMATICA and illustrates its use for the implementation of several shape grammars, including the one used in the design module of a specifi c shape grammar for mass-customized housing, called DESIGNA. The underlying shape representation, generation and control are discussed. The resulting shape grammar interpreter tries to support designers’ ways of thinking and working by acting as a bridge between shape grammars, the formalism that captures a design process, and a CAD application, for post-processing the computed design. This bridge is implemented by Rosetta, which ensures portability among different CAD applications.

summary This article focuses on the use of both shape grammar and space syntax as tools to identify and encode the principles and rules behind the adaptation of existing houses to new requirements. The idea is to use such rules as part of a transformation grammar-based methodology for the rehabilitation of existing dwellings. The developed grammar is a specifi c grammar to inform the rehabilitation of a particular type of building in Portugal – “rabo-de-bacalhau”. In this article the goal is to explore how the “rabo-the-bacalhau” transformation grammar can be transformed in a general rehabilitation grammar in order to inform the rehabilitation of various types of housing buildings.

summary Architects have been using computers for documentation but they are yet to engage them within a process designing that goes beyond basic representation. This paper explains a project that explores an alternate way computers could be unitized in architecture. More specifically, for the creation of mass customizable homes whose design quality can be controlled through the use of shape and grammar based rules that reliably produce controlled variation with its structure. The ultimate goal of the project was to develop a prototype within the parametric software grasshopper. The development of this project was based on the idea that homebuilders could engage this type of tool to deliver better products that could be custom tailored for their clients and architects could utilize within their design process.

summary This paper presents an analysis of Jardim São Francisco, a lowincome housing development in São Paulo, Brazil, using shape grammar as an analytical method. It is part of an ongoing research that aims at analyzing the different types of sitting in low-income housing developments and their consequences for public spaces. The fi nal objective is to propose a design method that allows designing better quality urban spaces in this type of development.

title The use of simulation to evaluate design options on conceptual mass study phase

summary This paper presents the results of an exploratory study developed with the Autodesk Project Vasari and AutoCAD Civil 3D. Project Vasari was used to evaluate the environmental performance of a low-income housing project. It shows us that the actual site orientation of the project presents poor environmental performance, which could be improved by rotating building in 90 degrees. The AutoCAD Civil 3D was used to evaluate how that rotation should impact on earthmoving. The results showed that the simulations developed, even though having low level of accuracy, provide sufficiently clear information to support decision making on conceptual mass project stage.

summary Digital sound reproduction is inferior to analog sound reproduction: by definition digitally processed sound is a compressed representation of the original sound signal. Similarly, this paper asks: Are digital computation design tools inferior to analog tools? Is information missing from the digital design ‘signals’? What is analog computation and could new tools be developed that avoid digital compression, and allow designers to more clearly ‘hear’ or experience the act of design? Working within our current digital computation paradigm, we argue designers are underexposed to and even unaware of much of the raw design signal available with analog computation design tools.

summary Grammar formalisms for design come in a large variety, requiring different representations of the entities being generated, and different interpretative mechanisms for this generation. Most examples of shape grammars rely on labeled shapes, a combination of line segments and labeled points. Color grammars extend the shape grammar formalism to allow for a variety of qualitative aspects of design, such as color, to be integrated in the rules of a shape grammar. Sortal grammars consider a compositional approach to the representational structures underlying (augmented) shape grammars, allowing for a variety of grammar formalism to be defi ned and explored. In this paper, we revisit and explore an exemplar shape grammar from literature to illustrate the use of different grammar formalisms and consider the implementation of rule application within a sortal grammar interpreter.

summary This paper describes the initial results of a grammar study based on bottom-up research carried out in Campinas. The research covers self-built housing and “in situ” projects aimed at creating systems which will help the inhabitants by providing them with “layouts” for housing construction. This paper explores the descriptive and generative potential of shape grammar in order to create a parametric shape grammar for self-built incremental housing in Campinas, respecting tradition, diversity and the inhabitants’ desires.

summary As part of an ongoing research project, this Paper is intended to present some of the main questions emerged when preparing a series of experiments for the generation and arrangement of facade elements in mass customized dwellings. In general, two differing approaches have been tried in panelization of regular and irregular facades in buildings. The first one is based on dimensional coordination strategies and is regarded as being the most efficient in terms of material usage and production rationalization. The other is derived from the more open strategy of deriving individual panel dimensions from a UV grid and its transformations.

summary The concepts and applications of Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD) have a predominant presence and impact on architectural design innovation and creativity. ASCAAD, in its 6th international conference, invited the learnt society of academics, researchers and professionals to debate the ubiquitous emerging role of CAAD in underpinning innovative design thinking processes and research in design education. The conference theme covered the following issues:  Computational research in design pedagogy and in practice  Intelligent agents, generative and parametric design  Building Information Modeling and Computer-supported design collaboration  Ubiquitous computing and interactive environments  Urban/ City/ regional planning and digital Modeling  Digital tools in design and construction  Mass customization Selected papers have been updated in this publication to reflect the constant quest to balance architectural thinking with operative techniques. It is well acknowledged that the advent of computation and information technology had profoundly altered architectural thinking. Design software and numerical fabrication have recast the role of form giving and shaping environments in architecture and opened up unprecedented opportunities of investigation and links with other scientific domains such as biomimcry, parametric design and modeling of urban and building environments. In this issue authors suggest a continuum between architectural analytical thinking and CAAD systems. Looking at the collaboration between authors of various backgrounds also strengthens this narrative that architecture is expanding beyond its traditional enquiry into historical and theoretical aspects into the world of multi-desciplinarity. It is evident from the diverse publications that CAAD is designed and utilized to expand the architectural pedagogy and practice into initiating and opening up the exploratory grounds of creation and productivity in design.

summary Industrial robots for architectural fabrication have not yet been directly linked to the design process, as current research focuses mostly on the automated generation of robot control data for mass customization. In this paper, we will discuss the use of a real-time programming environment for robot simulation/control and introduce a virtual robot, that allows architects to digitally prototype fabrication processes. While such a real-time approach is also suitable for mass customization, the main advantage is that this interaction with the virtual-robot can be used to intuitively solve complex fabrication problems.

summary GENE_ARCH is a Generative Design System that combines Pareto Genetic Algorithms with an advanced building energy simulation engine. This work explores its integration with a Shape Grammar, acting as GENE_ARCH’s shape generation module. The urban patio house typology is readdressed in a contemporary context, both by improving its energy-effi ciency standards, and by rethinking its role in the genesis of high-density urban areas, while respecting its specifi c spatial organization and cultural grounding. Field work was carried out in Marrakesh, surveying a number of patio houses which became the Corpus of Design, from where a Shape Grammar was extracted. The computational implementation of the patio house grammar was done within GENE_ARCH. The resulting program was able to generate new, alternative patio houses designs that were more energy effi cient, while respecting the traditional rules captured from the analysis of existing houses. After the computational system was fully implemented, it was possible to complete different sets of experiments. The first experiments kept more restrained rules, thus generating new designs that closer resembled the existing ones. The progressive relaxation of rules and constraints allowed for a larger number of variations to emerge. Analysis of energy results provide insight into the main patterns resulting from the evolutionary search processes, namely in terms of form factors of generated solutions, and urban densities achieved.

summary This paper analyses a hybrid design approach; how physical and digital processes can inform each other in a multivalent design cycle. It describes the design of origami-inspired window shades, part of the Shaping Light project that explores how adjustable surface structures can modulate light levels and heat gain in response to the changing seasons. The screen uses sloped surfaces to diffuse light and create apertures that close when the screen is stretched and open when the screen is folded. The project complements digital methods for pattern proportioning and kinetic simulation with manual manipulation to generate 3D folding motifs and refi ne assemblies. Physical prototypes can shape digital refi nement by revealing visual and structural characteristics of materials, along with joint and production considerations. Physical models for simulating sunny and cloudy daylighting conditions provide a direct connection between spatial confi guration and visual effects. The paper concludes with guidelines for material-based digital-analog creation.

summary With the invention of computers, Architecture and other Engineering disciplines have undergone revolutionary developments offering new opportunities for improving efficiency and opening new frontiers for creativity. For example in architecture and urban planning, the discussions have been extended from conventional writings to cover cyberspace, virtual architecture and digital city. Moreover, computers have helped in the realization of many complex projects that would be inconceivable with traditional drawing techniques. This is clearly demonstrated in the works of Frank Gehry's, Zaha Hadid, Daniel Libeskind and many others. In deed, digital techniques have changed the design creative process and how the architects think. Traditionally the structured development architectural ideas from 2D drawings (plans, sections, elevations) towards 3D resolution has been replaced by more interactive approach of 2D & 3D. The changes that digital techniques have brought to the field of Architecture; including practice and education, can obviously be viewed from different angles and incite many discussions and questions. However, the purpose of this presentation is to discuss the role of digital techniques within the overall framework of project management in Gulf Housing Engineering. It starts the discussion with a brief on architecture and digital techniques in the Gulf Region, especially during the “boom period”; a period characterized by rapid production of buildings relying heavily on virtual images. It is against this background, the role of digital techniques is evaluated from a practice point of view. In fact in GHE, digital means are integral parts of the holistic project delivery process starting form initiation, to various design stages to construction ending with project completion. In this process emphasis is paid to the inter-relationships between IT Systems and Quality Control which in turn facilitate measuring, monitoring and reporting on various managerial, technical and design and budgetary aspects of the project. The presentation is supported by real case studies of GHE portfolio. It emphasizes that digital techniques should be an integral part of an overall process and should be seen as means to enhance efficiency and creativity; and should contribute to the betterment of the built environment

summary The Emergent Reefs project thrives on the potential that emerge from a coherent utilization of the environment’s inherent ecological structure for its own transformation and evolution, using an approach based on digitally simulated ecosystems and sparkled by the possibilities and potential of large-scale 3D printing technology. Considering tourism as an inevitable vector of environmental change, the project aims to direct its potential and economic resources towards a positive transformation, providing a material substrate for the human-marine ecosystem integration with the realization of spaces for an underwater sculpture exhibition. Such structures will also provide a pattern of cavities which, expanding the gradient of microenvironmental conditions, break the existing homogeneity in favor of systemic heterogeneity, providing the spatial and material preconditions for the repopulation of marine biodiversity. Starting from a digital simulation of a synthetic local ecosystem, a generative technique based on multi-agent systems and continuous cellular automata (put into practice from the theoretical premises in Alan Turing’s paper “The Chemical basis of Morphogenesis” through reaction-diffusion simulation) is implemented in a voxel field at several scales giving the project a twofold quality: the implementation of reaction diffusion generative strategy within a non-isotropic 3-dimensional field and integration with the large-scale 3D printing fabrication system patented by D-Shape®. Out of these assumptions and in the intent of exploiting the expressive and tectonic potential of such technology, the project has been tackled exploring voxel-based generative strategies. Working with a discrete lattice eases the simulation of complex systems and processes across multiple scales (including non-linear simulations such as Computational Fluid-Dynamics) starting from local interactions using, for instance, algorithms based on cellular automata, which then can be translated directly to the physical production system. The purpose of Emergent-Reefs is to establish, through strategies based on computational design tools and machine-based fabrication, seamless relationships between three different aspects of the architectural process: generation, simulation and construction, which in the case of the used technology can be specified as guided growth.

summary The purpose of this paper is to analyze the relationship between the shape grammar process and brand identity, taking the user’s perception in the creation of new products as the central core of the research. The latter is done in order to obtain several parameters that allow us to change the shape of the products and do not affect the acknowledgement of brand conductive concept. By reducing the amount of results of processes of design, the selection and evaluation process is improved. To conduct the research the bottles from the brand Next from Soprole S.A were selected as study case.

summary In this paper we demonstrate through examples and an experiment that digital fabrication is viable and it is starting to produce impact in the Brazilian architecture, towards mass customization, not only through some exceptional buildings, but also through small experiences involving ordinary design needs. The examples show that digital fabrication is already contributing to innovative solutions in the Brazilian architecture. The experiment consisted of producing and comparing two models of a column of the National Cathedral of Brasilia, one analogically and other digitally fabricated. The results of this experiment show that digital fabrication technology and mass customization are not only economically viable for the Brazilian construction industry but can also contribute to significant savings.
