summary In contemporary architecture there is a growing interest in exploring unique forms and constructive solutions, which could hardly be conceived and materialized until recently. Operating in this context, the construction industry has tried to innovate by inventing new materials aside with rethinking existent ones. In this second scenario, given that the use of CAD/CAM technologies have opened new possibilities for traditional materials, it becomes important to ask if cork could face similar innovative opportunities. The present paper synthesizes some of the main arguments, experiments and results obtained in a PhD thesis about that question.

summary This paper aims to discuss the possible contributions that parametric modeling environments can bring to descriptive geometry teaching process in architecture courses. The paper shows a method where models developed in Grasshopper are used to illustrate how is possible to combine computing concepts, shape generation and design references during descriptive geometry classes. In this work is used as design precedent, solutions created by the Mexican architect and mathematician Felix Candela. His concrete shells developed from hyperbolic paraboloids are recognized as important references in architecture. As was said, during the research was developed a set of models in Grasshopper. This models were created in a way to show to the students the concepts required to build an hyperbolic paraboloid.

summary DOOTERS is a to-do list application for iPhone which entertains and motivates the user to get things done. It was developed based on requirements obtained trough: 1. the study of several personal information organizing methods (Covey, 1989; Allen, 2005; Foster, 2006); 2. answers to a task lists user focused questionnaire; 3. observation of to-do list users while creating lists and organizing tasks; 4. comparison of digital and non-digital task list media (paper, computer and mobile device); 5. analysis of profiles, behaviors and to-do list applications for iPhone. In this paper, the authors present the process of obtaining requirements for developing and positioning DOOTERS.

summary Current trends in architectural practice such as an increased focus on sustainable design, integrated design, and the globalization of architecture are increasing the need for practitioners that are skilled in collaboration. Collaboration fosters innovation and creativity. It is a key operating principle for the 21st century and an important skill that an architecture student must be exposed to. The change in knowledge generation and creative problem solving is transforming education towards collaborative learning forcing architecture and engineering schools to address new course structures with “collaborative” aspect. The work presented in this paper draws its base from collaborative design learning. It describes an international collaborative design studio titled “International Design Studio: Green Transformable Buildings” conducted between three institutions, Y_ld_z Technical University (YTU)–Istanbul, University of Twente (TU)-Enschede Engineering Sciences and Industrial Design School, and Architecture Faculty of Sarajevo (AFS).

summary This paper is part of an ongoing research that analyzes the housing projects of the Dutch office MVRDV through their theoretical research and design processes. The text focuses on the use of parametric software according to two key aspects that qualify their production: research and conceptual creative potential. Since the late 1990s, the architects are positioning their practice under a strategy that combines collection, processing and interpretation of large amounts of data, what means the conversion of statistical information into concrete and inventive form. With this demand the office developed parametric software as Regionmaker, the case study presented here.

title Simulation Heuristics for Urban Design

summary Designing simulations for urban design not only requires explicit performance criteria of planning standards but a synthesis of implicit design objectives, that we will call ‘purpose rules’, with computational approaches. The former would at most lead to automation of the existing planning processes for speed and evaluation, the latter to an understanding of perceived urban qualities and their effect on the planning of cities. In order to transform purpose rules into encoded principles we argue that the focus should not be on defining parametric constraints and quantities, but on aligning the perceptual properties of the simulations with the strategies of the stakeholders (planner/ urban designer/ architect/ developer/ community). Using projects from the Computational Design and Research group at Aedas [CDR] as examples, this chapter will discuss how an open framework of lightweight applications with simple functionality can be integrated into the design and planning process by using computational simulations as urban design heuristics.

summary Recently the developments in and the extensive use of digital design technologies have brought about fundamental changes in the way architects design and represent. As a result of the changing architectural design practise, there have been significant changes in architectural curricula to accommodate new demands, opportunities, processes and potentials provided by advance digital design tools and fabrication-based design techniques. Based on this new demand in design education, a number of additional subjects have been introduced in architectural curricula facilitating the experimentation of free-form /complex design artefact, building components and material attributes. Reported in this paper is the experience of the students as well is a commentary on the quality of the outcomes they achieved whilst confronting this new learning experience. Based on the analysis of collected questionnaire answers, this paper will document the issues that the students experienced during digital design development, the modelling and assembling level as well as in the process of fabrication.

summary The use of digital fabrication in the production and making of architecture is becoming a prevalent vehicle for the design process. As a result, there is a growing demand for computer-aided design (CAD) skills, computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) logic, parametric modeling and digital fabrication in student education. This paper will highlight three student projects that look to ingrate computational prototyping with digital fabrication techniques in the production of architecture. The goal is to hybridize fabrication techniques of sectioning, tessellating and folding to educate students in CAD, CAM, parametric modeling and digital fabrication. Rather than repeating conventional approaches or recreating from precedent, mixing techniques challenges students to understand the CAD technique or parameters for modeling, translate for CAM production and deal with real world constraints of materials, time and tectonics. In the end, these projects are critical of the digital and projectively speculate on the architectural detail in an age of digital ubiquity.

summary The paper describes an ongoing cooperation of architecture students with museum educational services and visually impaired persons. The project aims at conveying non-haptic art like paintings or graphics in public exhibitions to visually impaired people (blind or partially sighted). The concept combines rapid prototyping technologies with art interpretation and strategies for transporting visual information by haptic expressions. To reach this goal the students produce small and haptic explorable exhibits of the paintings by using rapid prototyping technologies and manufacture hand-outs, which can be touched by the blind people during guided tours at the exhibition.

summary The interesting distinction established by Collin Rowe and Robert Slutzky regarding the concept of transparency in modern architecture can be further enriched in relation to digital architecture and the new ways in which architects may address the design of material limits. The polarity between materiality and virtuality, between being and appearance is challenged with the concept of eversion and could lead to what we have referred to as virtual transparency. The intricate performative latticed skins designed and fabricated thanks to C.A.D./C.A.M. techniques have produced different states of transparent visual effects that either conceal or partially suggest silhouettes producing latticed transparencies. Finally, the development of next generation liquid crystal displays may introduce highly responsive transparent membranes in architecture allowing a one step further virtual transparency that could be described as translucent transparency.

summary The walkability of open spaces has been highlighted in current discussions about the production of designed environments in urban contexts (Matan, 2011). To contribute to this theme, this work selects the environmental comfort of open spaces as its element of study. The production of urban space was investigated, specifically in regard to urban morphology, understanding that city design directly influences environmental comfort (Jacobs, 1996). This work addresses the geographic context of low latitudes, specifically in hot and humid climate zones of Brazil, and, in this context, according to NBR 15220 (national performance standards), shading is one of the main comfort strategies, so solar incidence was the approached environmental phenomenon. Thus, this work presents a digital system that performs exploratory analysis on the correlations between urban form indicators and environmental performance indicators, specifically solar incidence. The method consists of three steps: urban form modeling (1), indicator measurement (2) and correlation analysis (3). In the first stage, different spatial sections of a city in Brazil were represented in the digital environment (1). This work’s implementation instrument is based on a City Information Modeling framework (Beirao et al., 2012). Visual Programming Interface (VPI) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tools were used, in addition to a Relational Database Management System (RDBMS). Then, for each urban clipping, the values of morphological indicators and the incidence of solar radiation were measured (2). Based on the values of the indicators, an exploration of their correlation was carried out by statistical methods (3). The results of the correlation analysis and their correspondent scatter plots are presented. Finally, possible applications of the results for the creation of prescriptive urban planning systems are discussed, seeking to promote a sustainable urban environment.

summary Evolution and innovation in architecture are intensely related to the rise and developments of technology. Within this context, it is possible to recognize how in recent decades this milieu has fostered the development of new methodologies for urban design and architectural practice, as is, for example, the Parameterization. This paper is focused on the subject of Parametric Urbanism: discussing / questioning the emergence of this new architectural methodology; addressing the factors that contributed to its appearance; and seeking to understand whether the parametric approach has benefits and whether it may or may not be a solution or of assistance to urban planning. The paper provides a brief literature review focused on parametric urbanism and then it presents a practical case study of parametric urbanism: an Urban Plan in Beijing, developed in an academic context, at the University École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in 2012. Having as base diverse examples of parametric urbanism, it is tried to identify/justify decisions defining principles and application guidance for this project. The conclusion presents the final considerations based on opposing the case study with the theoretical approach, seeking to clarify whether this new kind of urban design methodology, Parametric Urbanism, is or not viable.

summary This paper discusses sound and space instances supported by practices pertaining to the cultural action Intercultural Dialogues. This action is part of a larger protttject named Hybrid Territories, which involves digital media, communities, cultural activities, and the proposal of public policies, funded by FAPESP (São Paulo State Agency for Research Funding), Brazil, by means of a partnership with the Arts and Culture Bureau of the city of São Carlos. The cultural action in question is based on the construction of hybrid spatialities by the use of live-stream communication of sounds, thereby favoring the exchange of sound readings between São Carlos, Brazil, and Lüneburg, Germany.

summary This paper examines the existing training gaps between the traditional teaching process of the Architectural Design Studio (ADS) and the new contemporary training scenarios through the perception of the ePortfolio’s use, which allows it to visualize guidelines for updating its teaching and learning process. The study is qualitative with an applied approach, based on a perception survey answered by students who attended the P2 workshop, between 2012 – 2018, in the Architecture Career of Concepción University, Chile. The results show the existence of training gaps associated with factors of conception, planning and development of pedagogical strategies of the training process. The conclusions allow us to observe opportunities for updating the teaching process of the ADS through the mediation of technological tools, which help to build a new pedagogical conception, more adjusted to the current and future scenarios of modernity.

summary Architects have been using computers for documentation but they are yet to engage them within a process designing that goes beyond basic representation. This paper explains a project that explores an alternate way computers could be unitized in architecture. More specifically, for the creation of mass customizable homes whose design quality can be controlled through the use of shape and grammar based rules that reliably produce controlled variation with its structure. The ultimate goal of the project was to develop a prototype within the parametric software grasshopper. The development of this project was based on the idea that homebuilders could engage this type of tool to deliver better products that could be custom tailored for their clients and architects could utilize within their design process.

summary In this paper we present an outline of a newly started project to develop a city generator for use in urban planning. The aim of the project is to develop a rule-based system which is capable of generation lookalike cities. Lookalike cities are cities which resemble real life cities without being an exact copy of it. A city consists of several zones; each zone has it own identity. In order to generate lookalike cities, these zone-identities need to be capture into rules which the system can ‘read’.
