title Sphere mapping: A method for a responsive surface design
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2012.527
source Proceedings of the 17th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia / Chennai 25-28 April 2012, pp. 527–536
summary The method proposed in this project addresses the parametric manipulation of a given pattern to respond directly to a pre-defined surface. Continuing the research of Kevin Rotheroe, Yale University and founder of FreeForm Design. Rotheroe has developed a series of studies in material and surface properties. By utilising a proven pattern, the proposed method sets parameters derived from the formal properties of the original pattern and produces a new pattern that is responsive to the curvature of a complex surface. The workflow developed in this research consists of a complex blending of tools in Grasshopper and Gehry Technologies Digital Project. The intent is to achieve the aesthetics and structure offered by Rotheroe’s original research and to add a responsive precision that provides an accurate adaptation of the pattern based on curvature of a specific computationally defined surface.

source Achten, Henri; Pavlicek, Jiri; Hulin, Jaroslav; Matejovska, Dana (eds.), Digital Physicality - Proceedings of the 30th eCAADe Conference - Volume 1 / ISBN 978-9-4912070-2-0, Czech Technical University in Prague, Faculty of Architecture (Czech Republic) 12-14 September 2012, pp. 701-708.
summary The article presents a graph-based spatial analysis toolset (“decoding spaces”components) which we have recently developed as an extension of the visual scripting language Grasshopper3D for Rhino. These tools directly integrate spatial analysis methods into CAD design software which can have a signifi cant effect on current design workfl ows. However, grasshopper doesn’t only enable the results of analyses to be used in the standard Rhino modelling environment. It also makes it possible to integrate spatial analysis into a parametric design approach as discussed in this paper. The functionality of this toolset is demonstrated using a simple urban design scenario where we introduce the idea of parametric patterns based on graph-measures.

title Um ensaio para inserção do conceito de processos generativos digitais em estágios iniciais da formação em arquitetura [An experiment for introducing the concept of generative processes in early stages of architectural education]
source SIGraDi 2012 [Proceedings of the 16th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Brasil - Fortaleza 13-16 November 2012, pp. 611-614
summary The use of digital media for representation is already strongly established among architects and students of architecture, however, despite the rapid technological developments and growing research, the use of advanced digital technology to generate and manipulate complex forms is still far less present in the learning and teaching of architectural design. This study presents a didactical approach for introducing generative design as a method for form exploration through parametric geometric representation. The activity presented in this paper was exercised with second and fifth semester students, working with form generation and variation using Grasshopper as a parametric design tool.

summary The research presented further is part of the Digital Alberti research project, which aims to assess the infl uence of Leon Batista Alberti’s theory on Portuguese architecture, through the use of digital technologies. One of the project tasks implied computational and physical modelling of Alberti’s column system. Development of the computational model implied decoding Alberti’s treatise on architecture De re aedifi catoria into a consistent set of parameters and relationships, and then implementing these into generative parametric computer programs through visual programming language Grasshopper. This computational model is able to automatically generate physical models of classical columns according to Alberti’s canons. These digital models were then materialized through production of physical models, through rapid prototyping and digital fabrication technologies. Special attention is given to the CNC stone milling of a Corinthian capital.

doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2012.1.235
source Achten, Henri; Pavlicek, Jiri; Hulin, Jaroslav; Matejovska, Dana (eds.), Digital Physicality - Proceedings of the 30th eCAADe Conference - Volume 1 / ISBN 978-9-4912070-2-0, Czech Technical University in Prague, Faculty of Architecture (Czech Republic) 12-14 September 2012, pp. 235-243
summary The research topic of this paper exemplifies design optimization techniques of a hotel/office tower in Central China (Nanjing city), which faces subtropical humid climate throughout the year. The main intent of the project is to fi nd optimized design solution with the aid of parametric design tools and Visual Basic Scripting techniques (in Rhino Script & Grasshopper) combined with intuitive design process. In any urban context, we firmly believe that architectural design is a responsive phenomenon, which faces diverse interaction with the user & the local climate. The building design of the proposed tower acknowledges these responsive factors of the design with the environment along with building users or residents. Consequently, we strive to develop a sustainable design solution, which is ecologically efficient and psychologically conducive to the wellbeing of the user. We developed our intuitive design product with complex computational design toolsets to leverage design and energy efficiency. In this procedure, we draw major design concepts and geometrical typologies from natural systems in the form of bio mimicry or biologically inspired design process. Overall, this research paper outlines the significance and relevant benefi ts of the combination of intuitive design (from experience, expertise and architects skills) with parametric scripting tools.

title Exercício Projetual de uma Estrutura de Cobertura com a Utilização do Diagrama de Voronoi no plug-in Grasshopper [Design experiment with the use of Voronoi Diagrams in Grasshopper plug-in: a roof structure]
source SIGraDi 2012 [Proceedings of the 16th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Brasil - Fortaleza 13-16 November 2012, pp. 636-640
summary This paper describes a design experiment with the use of Voronoi Diagrams, a systematic division of the metric space based on a set of points. Automated procedures were used in the process: a script that generated sets of random points and a plug in that automatically generated polygons based on these points. Computer models, scale models and full scale prototypes were produced in order to develop construction details and preview results. It was possible to conclude that the use of a generative method along with automated procedures is far from restricting creativity, allowing the quick exploration of multiple design alternatives.

title Spatial Optimisations - Merging depthmapX, spatial graph networks and evolutionary design in Grasshopper
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2016.2.249
source Herneoja, Aulikki; Toni Österlund and Piia Markkanen (eds.), Complexity & Simplicity - Proceedings of the 34th eCAADe Conference - Volume 2, University of Oulu, Oulu, Finland, 22-26 August 2016, pp. 249-254
summary In the Space Syntax community, the standard tool for computing all kinds of spatial graph network measures is depthmapX (Varoudis, 2012). The process of evaluating many design variants of networks is relatively complicated, since they need to be drawn in a separated CAD system, exported and imported in depthmapX via dxf file format. This procedure disables a continuous integration into a design process. Furthermore, the standalone character of depthmapX makes it impossible to use its network centrality calculation for optimization processes. To overcome this limitations, we present in this paper the first steps of experimenting with a Grasshopper component (Varoudis, 2016) that can access the functions of depthmapX and integrate them into Grasshopper/Rhino3D. Here the component is implemented in a way that it can be used directly for an evolutionary algorithm (EA) implemented in a Python scripting component in Grasshopper.

title Programming Languages For Generative Design: A Comparative Study
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 10 - no. 1, 139-162
summary In the field of Generative Design (GD), Visual Programming Languages (VPLs), such as Grasshopper, are becoming increasingly popular compared to the traditional Textual Programming Languages (TPLs) provided by CAD applications, such as RhinoScript. This reaction is explained by the relative obsolescence of these TPLs and the faster learning curve of VPLs. However, modern TPLs offer a variety of linguistic features designed to overcome the limitations of traditional TPLs, making them hypothetical competitors to VPLs. In this paper, we reconsider the role of TPLs in the design process and we present a comparative study of VPLs and modern TPLs. Our findings show that modern TPLs can be more productive than VPLs, especially, for large-scale and complex design tasks. Finally, we identify some problems of modern TPLs related to portability and sharing of programs and we propose a solution.

source SIGraDi 2012 [Proceedings of the 16th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Brasil - Fortaleza 13-16 November 2012, pp. 74-78
summary Differently from other regions in the Planet, since 2010, in Latin America textual programming language (Rhinoscripting) is being replaced by its visual equivalent (Grasshopper). This is a consequence of our preference for an interactive platform, and because our design problems are not as complex, so we aim to control geometrical problems or aspects belonging to an product scale instead of an architectural one. Problems emerging when creating code could be improved by modifying and reusing existing solutions as a starting point, since learning would not be centered in the object but in the process of creating it, using a suitable instrument.

summary Assuming that the city is not an accomplished system, but a living body, in constant development, this study proposes a Grasshopper generative algorithm, which aims to interpret the favelas’ dynamics forces, responsible for these spaces continuous transformations. The generative process so defined is an open project, where the inhabitants are free to adapt the house, along the time, to their specific space demand, even respecting some assembling rules and constructive principles. The final result is a social dwelling construction process where flexibility and adaptability are integrated into the project, and where the variable time accomplish an important role into space configuration.

source SIGraDi 2012 [Proceedings of the 16th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Brasil - Fortaleza 13-16 November 2012, pp. 426-430
summary This work describes a methodology to optimize solar incidence in photovoltaic facades of multi-floor buildings. The methodology identifies and parameterizes the building volume according to geometric principles of photovoltaic capture for all facades orientations. Initially, geometric modeling is made through an algorithm developed in a graphic-algorithm editor, Grasshopper – integrated with the modeling tool, Rhinoceros – then establishing the shape restrictions and variables. Secondly, twist and taper geometric transformation is correlated with solar incidence data through the interface of genetic platform, Galapagos. The results indicate that it’s possible explore the method to obtain: optimal solutions, reduced design time and better energy performance.

summary This paper aims to discuss the possible contributions that parametric modeling environments can bring to descriptive geometry teaching process in architecture courses. The paper shows a method where models developed in Grasshopper are used to illustrate how is possible to combine computing concepts, shape generation and design references during descriptive geometry classes. In this work is used as design precedent, solutions created by the Mexican architect and mathematician Felix Candela. His concrete shells developed from hyperbolic paraboloids are recognized as important references in architecture. As was said, during the research was developed a set of models in Grasshopper. This models were created in a way to show to the students the concepts required to build an hyperbolic paraboloid.

summary Architects have been using computers for documentation but they are yet to engage them within a process designing that goes beyond basic representation. This paper explains a project that explores an alternate way computers could be unitized in architecture. More specifically, for the creation of mass customizable homes whose design quality can be controlled through the use of shape and grammar based rules that reliably produce controlled variation with its structure. The ultimate goal of the project was to develop a prototype within the parametric software grasshopper. The development of this project was based on the idea that homebuilders could engage this type of tool to deliver better products that could be custom tailored for their clients and architects could utilize within their design process.

summary Learning programming can be a challenging task for design students, especially when code is to be entered in textual form. Visual programming languages, such as McNeil’s Grasshopper, have helped students to engage in scripting without having to deal with lower level syntax that is often hindering them in expressing their thoughts. However, the problem with learning how to program textually is only postponed: When switching to a new platform, students may be forced to learn coding from scratch, and, even worse, to do so in a textual environment that is yet unfamiliar. Our idea is simple: Connect visual programming with textual coding, using code-generation as means. Using this approach enables students to think visually, and see the results textually. An added bonus is the possibility to use debugging, a feature that is yet lacking from Grasshopper. By this way, our language aims to enable students to gradually move from visual to textual programming in a comfortable manner.
