summary This paper analyses a hybrid design approach; how physical and digital processes can inform each other in a multivalent design cycle. It describes the design of origami-inspired window shades, part of the Shaping Light project that explores how adjustable surface structures can modulate light levels and heat gain in response to the changing seasons. The screen uses sloped surfaces to diffuse light and create apertures that close when the screen is stretched and open when the screen is folded. The project complements digital methods for pattern proportioning and kinetic simulation with manual manipulation to generate 3D folding motifs and refi ne assemblies. Physical prototypes can shape digital refi nement by revealing visual and structural characteristics of materials, along with joint and production considerations. Physical models for simulating sunny and cloudy daylighting conditions provide a direct connection between spatial confi guration and visual effects. The paper concludes with guidelines for material-based digital-analog creation.

summary Architects by profession, Christian Derix and Asmund Gamlesæter are interested in expanding the capabilities of digital technology to inform, support and enrich the design process in architecture and spatial planning. The computational prototypes they develop range from form studies to visualization of complex processes in spatial planning such as movement behaviors of people in a city. They work analytically as well as generatively and the approach is deeply affected by the understanding that computing systems should not define solutions but offer creative freedom and create a symbiosis between the designer and the algorithmic intelligence. They are rather designed to help the designer view the design problem and consequences of decisions from different perspectives. Encouraging the designer to play through different narratives. They are rather tools for thinking through multiple solutions and allow the designer to play with the possibilities. The generation of the final design is inspired and validated by the tools but remains in the hands of the designer.

summary This paper documents the very first use of the interconnected HIS in a pedagogical setting. For this Augmented Design Studio, where three interconnected HIS were set up, the aim was to foster collaboration and co-design between the project participants as a new approach to teach the virtual design studio and to study the collaborative ideation process. The HIS (Hybrid Ideation Space) is an immersive system that uses freehand sketches and models to exteriorize conceptual ideas. Two innovative research methods have been used to assess this studio: the Collaborative Conversation framework that analyses the design discourse and the Ethnography by Telepresence, a non-intrusive observation method through an unused HIS. The Augmented Design Studio has been observed to help the design students push their project from abstract concepts to formalised concepts because in a pedagogical setting, it fosters collaboration over traditional top-down teacher-student interactions.

title Kinetic Hybrid Structure Development and Simulation

summary Supported through technological advances, the concept of kinetic architecture is internationally increasingly acknowledged in the past years in the development of adaptable buildings as to differing functional requirements, or external loading conditions. Most decisive factor is the structure in terms of materials and geometrical configurations, and the control system integrated within. Based on general principles of tensegrity structures, a hybrid system has been developed that consists of continuous hinge connected compression members, strengthened by an internal system of struts and continuous cable diagonals with closed loop. The kinetic mechanism is achieved through alteration of the cables length and the respective relative inclination of any adjacent compression members. In this way the transformability of the system arises primarily from the inherent integrative composition and dual capabilities of its members. Following the construction design of the prototype structure, the interactive development, as regards geometric properties and structural configurations, is presented analytically, as based on a parametric-associative design approach applied. Along this line, the specific syntax of structural development and simulation through parametric design is suggested to support in real terms the control design of the innovative structure in an integrated interactive context.

summary The Greenhouse and Cabinet of Future Fossils was commissioned by the American Philosophical Society Museum, funded by Heritage Philadelphia Program, a program of The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. The Greenhouse and Cabinet of Future Fossils attempts to gather, digest, and disseminate information about nature while also incorporating cutting-edge design and fabrication techniques to ultimately produce a greenhouse of the future. The pavilion structure is populated with cold frame modules and futuristic ceramic and 3D printed curiosities, prefabricated and assembled in the Jefferson Garden, Philadelphia. Taking inspiration from the artifacts in the exhibition, Of Elephants and Roses: Encounters with French Natural History, 1790–1830, the greenhouse revisits 19th-century thematic issues related to nature, culture, and the city to offer new interpretations of greenhouse architecture as urban hybrid ecosystems whose nonstandard form features new material and fabrication logics that inspire a shift away from a technical approach to sustainable architecture to one rooted in design and the built environment. The pavilion mobilizes concepts of event as the public is invited to actively participate in the planting of the cold frames, thus contributing to the actual secondary structure of the greenhouse, and then disassembling the structure at the end of the installation period and disseminating the planted materials. As a conceptual and provocative backdrop to this project, references are made to important contributions recently made by a small group of accomplished scientists, architects, and researchers at a university symposium whose central theme was to discuss next steps for sustaining sustainability.

summary Our paper presents a teaching project in the context of architectural education which inquires the fusion of learning processes within both physical and digital media. Our approach, situated within an undergraduate program, aims to blur the boundaries between physical and digital activities in order to enhance and amplify their qualities and, by doing so, broadening students’ understanding and awareness of extending design-based media. The program relies upon an open, design-driven, game-inspired process. While the games allow to explore form and space by following a set of simple directions, the games’ constraints guide the teaching of specifi c drawing and representation techniques. The exercises span two semesters of the fi rst year curriculum. Within the exercises we re-approach the embodiment of skill based upon possibilities, paths and strategies to combine design-based media as a conglomerate to draw from rather than as a set of singular techniques

summary This paper aims to contribute to the discussion and our understanding of time-based mapping of visual information. Our approach is to enhance the traditional contextual static analysis through the acknowledgement of the body and the senses as key indicators of perceptual spatial experience. The time-based mapping paradigms have produced different ways of designing space by leveraging perceptual and other sensorial understanding, leading to the formation of variables (or parameters) which at the same time turn themselves as catalysts for other variables. The potential for a constantly evolving reinterpretation of the perceptual experience and for associated paradigm to shift suggest a multiplicity of design possibilities for urban areas that also need to adapt to the new requirements of contemporary living. In essence, the paper will bring to light the deployment of tools (digital and analogue) to turn static invisible data to dynamic visible data. In other words, we want to explore how the data can be treated as a generative system, enabling students and tutors alike to experience space which accounts for sensory performances and behaviours within the space.

Here we explain a vector-based method that works in R2 and R3 to determine momentum forces at the node level, which can easily be implemented into (existing) particle systems and - together with the simulation of tension and compression forces - can be used to model the behavior of such material systems.

summary Plaster has been a fundamental material in numerous interior and exterior applications in architectural construction due to its fire-resistant properties and capabilities for intricate detailing. Moreover, prior to the widespread adoption of computer-aided design tools, plaster played a crucial role in historic preservation and architectural education (Mankouche & Schulte, 2012). While the use of decorative plaster elements in architectural construction has waned in popularity, the renewed interest in plaster within the context of advanced robotic fabrication offers a compelling basis for research. This paper presents an investigation into robotic plaster carving for adding detail and texture to plaster surfaces. Within the scope of this study, we identify and systematically examine various fabrication and material parameters for emergent geometries and fabrication defects, subsequently formalizing this robotic workflow for diverse applications in construction and crafts. Among these parameters, we primarily concentrate on toolpath geometry, tool orientation, carving speed, carving profile, and aggregation of carving strokes. Through this bottom-up approach, our objective is to enhance the understanding of tool-material interaction during the fabrication process and achieve improved control over the resulting artifact. Building on these insights, we demonstrate how the proposed robotic plaster carving workflow can be employed for subtractive surface detailing in architectural construction and digital crafts.

summary Compared to other industries, the built environment is still the largest and one of the least efficient consumers of resources. Existing measures and procedures for resource recovery and reuse are focused on the demolition phase, when the composition of materials and structures is mostly unknown and hard to be analysed. Therefore, these measures are somewhat inefficient for overall high-rate material recovery. The enhancement of the integrated semantic planning process by the introduction of the IFC unified data standard and BIM technology is a first-time opportunity to track, analyse, document and simulate all relevant players, parameters and processes with an impact on the resource and material efficiency through the entire life cycle of a building in the design phase of a building project. The presented work explores the potential of IFC to serve as a framework for achieving a higher material efficiency in the built environment. A proposed design check approach for the simulation and optimisation of material efficiency in a building over its life cycle is based on a system of key parameters and actions organised in logic trees. The parameters and actions are translated into IFC objects. Additionally required IFC objects and properties are identified and described.

summary This paper concerns the current discourse on computer-aided design tools for architectural design. There are drawbacks of purely analytic design tools which hinder a system-level, end-effect oriented ideation. For instance, most freeform quadrilateral meshes are fully constrained and therefore not capable of folding. They can only fold under special circumstances – when their geometry satisfi es the conditions of over-constrained kinematics. However, such intent of folding cannot be captured using simple modeling based on parameters and constraints. Furthermore, algorithmization of mesh kinematics using formulas is infl exible, it cannot handle topological variations, and it inhibits the interactive control of the model. In this paper, a fuzzy logic algorithm which uses a goal-oriented, human-like reasoning to control the parametric model is proposed. The algorithm applies easily observable behaviors of the geometry to adjust the selected patches until the entire shell can be folded. The algorithm relies on designer-observable characteristics of motion rather than on formulaic representations. Such approach directs the designers’ focus on the desired outcome while avoiding the drawbacks of analytic modeling of complex kinematics.

title Aerial Robotic Construction Towards a New Field of Architectural Research

summary This paper takes a first step in characterizing a novel field of architectural research - aerial robotic construction (ARC) - where aerial robotics is used not only for construction, but as a guiding principle in the design and fabrication process. Featuring autonomous flying vehicles that lift small building elements and position them according to a precise digital blueprint, ARC offers a comprehensive new approach to architecture research and technology. Developed by the research groups of Gramazio & Kohler and Raffaello D'Andrea at ETH Zurich, ARC offers unique advantages over traditional approaches to building: it does not require scaffolding, it is easily scalable, and it offers digital integration and informational oversight across the entire design and building process. This paper considers 1) research parameters for the individual components of ARC (such as module design, connection methodologies, vehicle cooperation, and construction sequencing/synchronization), and 2) the architectural implications of integrating these discrete components into a systemic, unifying process at the earliest stages of design. Fidelity between the design concept and the full-scale construction is of particular concern.

summary The building technology class “Parametric Design” simultaneously teaches thermal and daylight performance simulation to novice users, usually Master of Architecture students. Own buildings are created, analysed and geometrically modified during the design process, resulting in structures that are energetically pre-optimized. It is shown that energy demand and daylight utilization can be signifi cantly improved while taking into account formal considerations. Departing from a design process model that gives preference to either engineering or design thinking, multi-modal decision-making is diagnosed to be mediated by hybrid or multivalent representations, necessitating a shift in how inter-domain design knowledge flows might be understood. Opposed to purely linear or iterative process assumptions, a fluent state model of interconnected domains of analytic inquiry is proposed.

summary The consideration about contemporary urban spaces incorporates a set of investigations linked to spatial implementation of digital technologies. This paper is about the different ways in which tangible computational interfaces have been arranged in urban environments, be they projections onto urban surfaces, interactive façades, or even architecture and interactive and/or responsive urban objects. It examines the nature of this phenomenon from perspectives presented by different authors and based on systematized information on a wide array of interfaces. It also posits some significant attributes that should be taken into account when performing a close examination of these interventions. Its aim is to contribute theoretical explorations to the study of hybrid urban spaces.

summary This paper presents considerations and refl ections based on experiments conducted in the course of cultural activities within the Hybrids Territories Project for Public Policies, fi nanced by FAPESP and in force at Nomads.usp since March 2011. Starting from previous experiences using classical methods of qualitative research, such as semi-structured interviews and questionnaires, other ways of approaching and understanding the complexity of urban and social realities were sought. The reflections here presented were formed from the trial of methodological procedures, derived from other fields of knowledge and practices already recurrent in some communities. The aim is to verify the limits and potentialities of previously tested procedures and instruments, structured through digital media, to understand the diversity of ways of living in social housing estates with housing units similar to each other and located in the outskirts of two different cities.

summary This paper discusses sound and space instances supported by practices pertaining to the cultural action Intercultural Dialogues. This action is part of a larger protttject named Hybrid Territories, which involves digital media, communities, cultural activities, and the proposal of public policies, funded by FAPESP (São Paulo State Agency for Research Funding), Brazil, by means of a partnership with the Arts and Culture Bureau of the city of São Carlos. summary This paper presents the design, control system, and elastic behavior of ELAbot: a robotic bending active textile hybrid (BATH) structure that can self-form and transform. In BATH structures, equilibrium emerges from interaction between tensile (form active) and elastically bent (bending active) elements (Ahlquist and Menges 2013; Lienhard et al. 2012). The integration of a BATH structure with a robotic actuation system that controls global deformations enables the structure to self-deploy and achieve multiple three-dimensional states. Continuous elastic material actuation is embedded within an adaptive cyber-physical network, creating a novel robotic architectural system capable of behaving autonomously. State-of-the-art BATH research demonstrates their structural efficiency, aesthetic qualities, and potential for use in innovative architectural structures (Suzuki and Knippers 2018). Due to the lack of appropriate motor-control strategies that exert dynamic loading deformations safely over time, research in this field has focused predominantly on static structures. Given the complexity of controlling the material behavior of nonlinear kinetic elastic systems at an architectural scale, this research focuses on the development of a cyber-physical design framework where physical elastic behavior is integrated into a computational design process, allowing the control of large deformations. This enables the system to respond to conditions that could be difficult to predict in advance and to adapt to multiple circumstances. Within this framework, control values are computed through continuous negotiation between exteroceptive and interoceptive information, and user/designer interaction.

summary The hybrid contemporary space, which integrates urban and interactive virtual spaces, implies particular ways of inhabiting that suggests new identities, promoting the constant alternation between its different worlds.This article proposes to analyze and understand the design, construction and appropriation processes in this new social space-time. These processes are not only guaranteed by the accessibility to new media, but they involve the organization of complex strategies which included the development of instruments and landscapes that allow the migrations and interweaving between two realities: the urban and the virtual.This project generated an accumulation of unforgettable experiences that turned into a multiplicity of words and images that expanded through informal media or planned strategies.These activities allow reflecting upon the behaviors, meanings, and diverse thresholds that were constructed by the actors themselves during this process, and suggest new ways of being-in-the-world.
