summary Cities all over the world are faced with growing population pressure and are challenged by decreasing environmental quality. Development strategies and planning processes often fail to involve local environment knowledge. We present an approach to integrate environmental aspects into a two-step urban modeling framework, generating 3D visualizations from GIS-based and procedural modeling. The dynamic nature of this approach provides considerable support for transdisciplinary communication processes in urban planning.

summary Important progress towards the development of a system that enables multi-criteria design optimisation has recently been demonstrated during a research collaboration between Autodesk’s DesignScript development team, the University of Bath and the engineering consultancy Buro Happold. This involved integrating aspects of the Robot Structural Analysis application, aspects of the Ecotect building performance application and a specialist form finding solver called SMART Form (developed by Buro Happold) with DesignScript to create a single computation environment. This environment is intended for the generation and evaluation of building designs against both structural and building performance criteria, with the aim of expediently supporting computational optimisation and decision making processes that integrate across multiple design and engineering disciplines. A framework was developed to enable the integration of modeling environments with analysis and process control, based on the authors’ case studies and experience of applied performance driven design in practice. This more generalised approach (implemented in DesignScript) enables different designers and engineers to selectively configure geometry definition, form finding, analysis and simulation tools in an open-ended system without enforcing any predefined workflows or anticipating specific design strategies and allows for a full range of optimisation and decision making processes to be explored. This system has been demonstrated to practitioners during the Design Modeling Symposium, Berlin in 2011 and feedback from this has suggested further development.

summary This article is a starting point for the development of experiential urban co-design interfaces to enhance public participation in local urban projects and to be also used as a communication and collaboration tool in urban design. It is based on the previous research involving 3D city models utilized as understandable design interfaces for the non-technical public (Jutraz, Zupancic, 2011), where we have already explored different views (pedestrian, intermediate and bird’s-eye view), as well as the means by which the information obtained from these different views may be combined by shifting between viewpoints. Previous work was conducted in the “street lab” as well as the Urban Experimental Lab, which was developed specifi cally for the public’s participation in urban planning (Voigt, Kieferle, Wössner, 2009). Presented in this article is the next step that explores the immersive collaboration environment 3D ICC [1], formerly known as Teleplace. The environment was developed for effi cient collaboration and remote communication and shifts the research focus towards questions regarding how to employ both labs as interfaces between the non-technical public and design professionals. As we are facing the lack of digital systems for public participation and education in urban design, different digital tools for communication and collaboration should be combined into a new holistic platform for design. A digital system of tools needs to be developed that supports the urban design decision-making process and focuses on improved final solutions and increased satisfaction amongst all participants. In this article the system of digital tools for public participation, which include communication, collaboration and education, will be also defi ned, with its basic characteristics and its elements.

summary This research paper concentrates on a conceptual framework for the creation of high-level procedural city models. A workflow is presented, which enables users to create city models in an intuitive way by using design-code-driven building typologies. This drastically advances traditional procedural city modelling where usually low-level implementations of city model components take place. New planning methods and instruments have to be developed for the growing demand of the rapid environmental, social and economic changes in cities and agglomerations. The presented method allows for quick visualization and iteration by using urban planning typologies.

summary Digital architecture is at an exciting but challenging stage of its development. Past decades have witnessed important developments in computer-generated architectural representations. These tools have complemented and, in some cases, superseded the traditional forms of design and communication. In parallel with progress in computer graphics, advances in computer generated architectural representations have evolved to deliver photorealistic computer generated imagery. However, there is evidence to suggest that these advances have not significantly enhanced collaborative practices. It was acknowledged that to address the fragmentation of the industry, a fundamental change to deliver digital architecture was needed. Dealing with the requirements for an improved co-ordination and co-operation between designers and other stakeholders to encourage more integration has therefore become a central issue in the last decade. It was also recognised that significantly more intelligence needs to be brought to bear on the decision-making process if the targets set by the sustainability agenda are to be met. The quest for an improved quality of information and decision making has shifted the emphasis from computer-generated imagery to integrated building information. The recent emergence of building information modelling (BIM) constitutes one of the most exciting developments in the field. It was suggested that BIM will deliver considerable sophistication and judgment in decision-making. This keynote speech seeks to examine the implications of the transition of digital architecture from simulation and visualisation to information modelling. It aims to shed light on the methodological and technological challenges facing practitioners, researchers, and software developers, as a result of the early adoption of BIM.

summary The paper presents the second phase of our research efforts to further develop a model for interpretation of spatial complexities in urban environments (IMUSC – Interpretation Model of Urban Spatial Coherence). The model’s central structure is a result of our former research work being now further upgraded with the visual component and followed by the initial idea to extend it in terms of the pragmatic instrument and educational tool for the general public, participating in the process of urban decision-making. The paper concisely summarizes both theoretical and empirical phase of our research efforts; we explain the methodology used to gain novel knowledge regarding the abilities of the general public to decode professional visual messages. Further proposals are set by embedding the acquired empirical knowledge in the model structure as well as promote it in terms of a digital educational tool.

summary This paper develops a methodological approach for use in design practice which combines an external simulation tool (EnergyPlus™) with an evo-lutionary optimisation strategy for the form-finding of complex fenestra-tion systems. On one hand, based on previous research, it presents a novel approach for the shape morphogenesis that exploits a generative algorithm technique to control a limited set of parameters whilst on the other hand it facilitates the integration of a simulation tool capable of handling increasing levels of complexity with greater data interoperabil-ity. In doing so it will argue the heuristic potential of the proposed meth-od in aiding the designers’ decision making whilst increasing the formal possibilities of their final design solutions.

summary Design is both a goal oriented and decision making activity. It is ill-defined by nature as designing includes weighing and understanding trade-offs amongst soft and hard objectives or in other words vague or imprecise and computationally definable criteria and goals. In this regard designers in most contemporary practices face a crisis of sorts. How do we achieve performance or sustainability under these large degrees of uncertainty or with limited design cycle times? Fundamentally design collaborations, teams of domain experts, are not typically given enough time to design-explore, generate design alternatives in order to find or evolve solution quality through expansive design search spaces. Given these limitations of time and the ever more complex criteria for ‘designing-in’ performance our research approach provides a computational strategy to expand the solution space as well as pre-sort and qualify candidate designs. The research presents a novel methodology and technology framework and an initial implementation that was developed to enhance the human activity of design exploration, domain integration, and further evolve design process for performance goals. The research does so through generating and optimising a highly correlated solution space in conjunction with a near simultaneous evaluation of design alternative fitness.

title PARA-Typing Informing Form and the Making of Difference

summary This paper presents design research and instruction into the use of constraint based digital and analogue modelling techniques and the development of associative parametric models to simulate highly differentiated fabricated form. One set of these design research projects were conceived as manual analogue generative processes for prototyping modularity and serial differentiation.Then through parametric design techniques, modular aggregations were design explored and developed in concert with material properties and constraints. Utilizing digital fabrication full-scale installations were designed, manufactured, and for site-specific configurations. A second set of projects provides an extension of the design instruction that includes the integration of performance criteria into these design objectives.The objectives of the research are to present benefits and limitations of the incorporation of parametric design, performance analysis, and prototyping techniques in comprehensive studio instruction.The paper discusses the resultant informed materialized difference and the impacts on achieving reinforced and hands on learning objectives.

summary Cash-Back 1.0 presents research on the development of methodologies and technologies to simulate the cause and effect of early stage geometric design alternatives of buildings and the real time results upon financial pro-forma. Through the encoding of design rules and their associative relationships to financial pro-forma the research illustrates enhanced visualization of early stage building design decisions and their cumulative impact on financial goals and constraints. The research presents value an associative parametric design process affords often-disparate domains through correlation and visualization. The paper describes incorporation of a feedback loop between pro-forma and geometric models in conjunction with an optimization method. Given the level of uncertainty in early stage design decision making the research contributes partial solutions to the domain problems of design decision uncertainty and design cycle latency and is further argumentation for increased use of parametric design methods and automation to support design domain integration.

summary Design is a goal oriented decision-making activity. Design is ill defined and requiring of synthetic approaches to weighing and understanding tradeoffs amongst soft and hard objectives, and the imprecise and or computationally explicit criteria and goals. In this regard designers in contemporary practice face a crisis of sorts. How do we achieve performance under large degrees of uncertainty and limited design cycle time? How do we better design for integrating performance? Fundamentally design teams, are not typically given enough time nor the best tools to design explore, to generate design alternatives, and then evolve solution quality to search for best fit through expansive design solution spaces. Given the complex criteria for defining performance in architecture our research approach experiments upon an evolutionary and integrative computational strategy to expand the solution space of a design problem as well as pre-sort and qualify candidate designs. We present technology and methodology that supports rapid development of design problem solution spaces in which three design domains objectives have multi-directional impact on each other. The research describes the use of an evolutionary approach in which a genetic algorithm is used as a means to automate the design alternative population as well as to facilitate multidisciplinary design domain optimization. The paper provides a technical description of the prototype design, one that integrates associative parametric modeling with an energy use intensity evaluation and with a financial pro forma. The initial results of the research are presented and analyzed including impacts on design process; the impacts on design uncertainty and design cycle latency; and the affordances for ‘designing-in’ performance and managing project complexity. A summary discussion is developed which describes a future cloud implementation and the future extensions into other domains, scales, tectonic and system detail.

summary Today, material performance is regarded as one of the richest sources of innovation. Accordingly, architecture is shifting to practices by which the computational generation of form is directly driven by material characteristics. At the same time, there is a growing technological means for the varied composition of material, an extension of the digital chain that foregrounds a new need to engage materials at multiple scales within the design process. Recognising that the process of making materials affords perspectives not available with found materials, this paper reports the design and assembly of the fi bre reinforced composite structure Composite Territories, in which the property of bending is activated and varied so as to match solely through material means a desired form. This case study demonstrates how one might extend the geometric model so that it is able to engage and reconcile physical parameters that occur at different scales.

summary This paper will demonstrate two effective facade rationalisation patterns developed at Gehry Technologies for mitigating the tradeoffs between project constructability constraints vs. project aesthetic constraints. The two Case-Studies will present, fi rstly a method for dealing with large amounts of component instantiations and second with the economical delivery of complex project geometry through panelling. Both projects use design technology as a strategy for the integration of specialized knowledge and trades, through an effective use of information technology. The Case Studies will present the development of the Gridshell Digital Mock-Up of the Yas Island Marina Hotel in Abu Dhabi designed by Asymptote Architects and secondly the Museo Soumaya facade system in Mexico City designed by Fernando Romero LAR. This document will report the development process for obtaining relevant construction information, essential for the assembly of the facade systems by a third-party sub-contractor in support of the facade system coordination. The report concludes on the implementations of bespoke tools in support of the coordination and geometry description tasks. The tailored tool making process extends the parametric modelling system Digital Project™ in the design support role of obtaining aesthetically pleasing decompositions of the buildings Master Design Surface MDS into feasible constructible components.

summary This paper is derived from an under developed research work, that is a PhD thesis which studies the influence of Information Technology (IT) on architectural practice in Algeria. It examines the use of IT by students of the Department of Architecture and Construction in Constantine in their design studio’s projects. The target of the study is to inspect the depth of utilization of IT, identify the advantages and shortcomings of use, and propose some solutions. A field survey was undertaken on a sample of students at the Department of Architecture and Construction. The survey has the following objectives: • to find out the students’ motivation behind the adoption and use of IT in their projects; • to identify the negative and positive aspects of use; • to identify the barriers that would hinder better use; and • to determine the impact of the IT tools on the design process and projects. // For a more comprehensive comprehension of the study case; a pilot field survey was conducted during two consecutive years. This enables the researchers to make comparisons between the survey’s results of the same year, and to study the trends of use by making comparisons between the results of these two years. SPSS was used to analyze the results. The analysis of results shows that the IT helps largely to improve the quality of presentations of the documents, images and graphics but this was an attempt from students to satisfy and influence the "others". In some cases, this has negatively affected the quality of design projects. It was used by students with poor design skills to cover up some weak aspects and faults in their design projects. On the other hand, some tutors opposed the exaggerated use of IT and the complete dependence on the computer during the design stage. They prefer the "traditional way" of design development. There is an ongoing conflict and arguments between students and tutors regarding this matter. However, It was noticed that the IT has effectively contribute in improving the competition level between students thus the quality of their design projects.

summary Point cloud processing has come a long way in the past years. Advances in computer vision (CV) and machine learning (ML) have enabled its automated recognition and processing. However, few of those developments have made it through to the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry. Here, optimizing those workflows can reduce time spent on early-phase projects, which otherwise could be spent on developing innovative design solutions. Simplifying the processing of building point cloud scans makes it more accessible and therefore, usable for design, planning and decision-making. Furthermore, automated processing can also ensure that point clouds are processed consistently and accurately, reducing the potential for human error. This work is part of a larger effort to optimize early-phase design processes to promote the reuse of vacant buildings. It focuses on technical solutions to automate the reconstruction of point clouds into a digital twin as a simplified solid 3D element model. In this paper, various ML approaches, among others KPConv Thomas et al. (2019), ShapeConv Cao et al. (2021) and Mask-RCNN He et al. (2017), are compared in their ability to apply semantic as well as instance segmentation to point clouds. Further it relies on the S3DIS Armeni et al. (2017), NYU v2 Silberman et al. (2012) and Matterport Ramakrishnan et al. (2021) data sets for training. Here, the authors aim to establish a workflow that reduces the effort for users to process their point clouds and obtain object-based models. The findings of this research show that although pure point cloud-based ML models enable a greater degree of flexibility, they incur a high computational cost. We found, that using RGB-D images for classifications and segmentation simplifies the complexity of the ML model but leads to additional requirements for the data set. These can be mitigated in the initial process of capturing the building or by extracting the depth data from the point cloud.

summary This paper presents an inverse pedestrian urban design method and an initial set of parametric tools for conceptual design support at the pedestrian urban scale. Inverse pedestrian urban design concerns the derivation of urban design parameters from a local context in order to produce better informed and situated designs. The tools concern the rationalization of street network and building form. Some of the parameters that are used within the tools are view angles (visibility analysis) and distances between target points (accessibility analysis). The paper elaborates on inverse urban design, presents some case studies and tools, and touches upon design patterns and their alignment to design processes.

summary This proposed paper presents the results of a real world demo of adaptive urban lighting in a pedestrian oriented street in the core centre of a northern city of 65°01’ latitude, Oulu, Finland. The case project – LightStories (Valotarina) – explores the methods to enable city dwellers to participate in the design of public urban lighting, as well as interaction and communication through urban lighting. It applies a web-based design tool which offers city dwellers the possibility to design one hour long light animations to be displayed along a pedestrian oriented street. In addition to describing the design and development process of the lighting system and the participatory design tools used in this case, the paper presents general discussion about the process and tools, and also about the role of algorithm aided methods in enabling the user participation in lighting design with the tool.

title The representation of type in grammatical design

summary Grammatical design is useful for the generation of a set of related designs. The concept of type aids designers in generating designs with a specified structure. However, existing studies in grammar are ambiguous in their definition of type in the language of designs generated by a grammar. Extending our previous study of defining style in grammar, this paper provides a formal definition of the concept of type in the language of designs generated by a grammar. This is done with the help of a description scheme which is developed by augmenting grammar primitives and spatial relations with descriptors. The description scheme allows the computation of descriptors for designs generated from grammar thus making possible the comparison of various design types in the language of a grammar. Such a description scheme for defining design types is especially significant for less restricted grammars that generate a large number of designs that are varied in nature. A formal definition of type in grammars allows users to sift through designs with particular features, and thus select desired designs.

summary It exposes a design and construction system for horizontal plates to work as slabs in regular concrete buildings. Based to an evolutionary finite-element analysis of the topological configuration to get a curved design with a 50% reduction of traditional volume, that provide lower cost, less carbon foot-print, better performance and innovative ceiling. A library of profiles is elaborated according different loads, support and dimensions and implemented in a parametric design system, in order to produce geometries for study theirs integration in the building and to elaborate digital fabrication files. Different constructive strategies are been studied, making several prototypes.
