summary Gridshells are highly efficient, lightweight structures which can span long distances with minimal use of material (Vassallo & Malek 2017). One of the most promising and novel categories of gridshells are bending-active (elastic) systems (Lienhard & Gengnagel 2018), which are composed of flexible members (Kuijenhoven & Hoogenboom 2012). Timber elastic gridshells can be site-sprung or sequentially erected (geodesic). While a lot of research focus is on the site-sprung ones, the methods for design of sequentially-erected geodesic gridshells remained underdeveloped (Cichocka 2020). The main objective of the paper is to introduce a method of generating regular geodesic grid patterns on free-form surfaces and to examine its applicability to design structurally feasible geodesic gridshells. We adopted differential geometry methods of generating regular bidirectional geodesic grids on free-form surfaces. Then, we compared the structural performance of the regular and the irregular grids of the same density on three free-form surfaces. The proposed method successfully produces the regular geodesic grid patterns on the free-form surfaces with varying curvature-richness. Our analysis shows that gridshells with regular grid configurations perform structurally better than those with irregular patterns. We conclude that the presented method can be readily used and can expand possibilities of application of geodesic gridshells.

summary The intention of this research is to develop a design system for geometrically complex passive houses. Research focuses especially on the link-up of the CAAD (Computer-aided architectural design) and the CAM process (Computer-aided manufacturing) and deals only with timber structures. The aim of the project is to develop a system that would automate a creation of the computer model of the geometrically complex timber structures and link it to fabrication process. It should be possible to use the system for houses of the size of a family house up to an apartment house. The advantages of the system ought to be the fabrication preciseness, economical availability, high speed of construction, eco-friendliness and above all absence of geometrical constraints.

title Sewing timber panels: An innovative digitally supported joint system for self-supported timber plate structures

summary This paper focuses on the joint system of flat panels as parts of a freeform building. This topic is a key area of the ongoing founded research project, in which we investigate nonstandard shapes, realized with standard building materials, namely cross-laminated timber (CLT). We use different discretization algorithms to overlay arbitrary freeform surfaces with ornaments consisting of polygonal flat panels. We investigate a series of ornaments and their discretization results on different surfaces. In this paper, we will present and discuss a new timber-to-timber joint system that we developed exclusively for this project. We discuss the results of the load tests that we performed recently and we take a look at the construction dependent requirements of the joint system concerning the tolerances and the geometry and also, how these constraints inform the digital process. As we will discuss throughout the paper, in earlier publications we described the form finding process and the geometrical guidelines for the discretization of a desired freeform building using ornamental flat patterns. This paper moves one step further as the digital becomes physical and it is closely related to building construction and the computational design outset.

summary Architecture today has come to its most complex form. There are lots of criteria such as fi re safety, structure, sustainability etc… which must be controlled by the designers. To improve the performance and accessibility of buildings, governing bodies publish different codes for each of the different criteria. Buildings must comply with these codes to get a permit for construction. The checking of the buildings according the codes is done manually by code offi cials. This process is time consuming, high in cost and prone to errors. To remedy this problem by using the tools like BIM and AI, systems that can automatically check the code compliance of projects are being developed. In this paper we provide an overview of the structures and capabilities of these systems and present the automated code compliance checking system that we develop for checking building models against some parts of the Turkish Fire Codes.

title Running Interference: Complex Systems Intervention as Design Process

summary This paper presents a case study problem statement tested in the design studio with the intent of teaching methods for engaging systematic thinking as a process for deriving solutions to parametric design problems. The intent is to address the simulation environment developed through complex systems and interject a curve ball, or unexpected constraint delimiting the solution as part of the design process. This method was tested through the submittal of the projects to international design competitions. The students were asked to manipulate the competition criteria by appealing not only to the design criteria but also to the juries desire (whether conscious or unconscious) for novel sustainable processes of material usage and program. This material ecology is developed as a method for linking parametric modelling, not as a process for the application of a construction technique, but as a way to pre-rationalise material constraints and discover how program and form can operate within those constraints. In the first year of the studio two of six teams were selected as finalists and in the second year of the studio five of seven of the teams were selected as finalists.

The conference theme covered the following issues:  Computational research in design pedagogy and in practice  Intelligent agents, generative and parametric design  Building Information Modeling and Computer-supported design collaboration  Ubiquitous computing and interactive environments  Urban/ City/ regional planning and digital Modeling  Digital tools in design and construction  Mass customization Selected papers have been updated in this publication to reflect the constant quest to balance architectural thinking with operative techniques. It is well acknowledged that the advent of computation and information technology had profoundly altered architectural thinking. Design software and numerical fabrication have recast the role of form giving and shaping environments in architecture and opened up unprecedented opportunities of investigation and links with other scientific domains such as biomimcry, parametric design and modeling of urban and building environments. In this issue authors suggest a continuum between architectural analytical thinking and CAAD systems. Looking at the collaboration between authors of various backgrounds also strengthens this narrative that architecture is expanding beyond its traditional enquiry into historical and theoretical aspects into the world of multi-desciplinarity. It is evident from the diverse publications that CAAD is designed and utilized to expand the architectural pedagogy and practice into initiating and opening up the exploratory grounds of creation and productivity in design.

title Resilient Rules - Culture and Computation in Traditional Built Environments

summary This study explores the influence of the socio-cultural rules, based upon Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh), on the complexity of the traditional built environment. This system of rules organized the societal activities, including decisions and activities related to design and construction in the Arab-Islamic city. Considering the city as a complex system, the study will try to show how this rules system made the Arab-Islamic city resilient and adaptive. Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS) are non-linear, self-organizing systems that have the ability to adapt to changing conditions through changing the rules that organize the random autonomous interactions between agents in the environment. This adaptation takes place through gradual gained experience that is reflected in the behavior of agents. This study attempts to interrelate different bodies of literature (Complexity/Chaos theory and built environment studies) in a single framework that aims to show that the socio-cultural rules system based on fiqh was a major factor in the resilience of the traditional built environment. These interrelations are illustrated using a graph called Computational Rules Graph (CRG). The CRG relates the traditional rules system to attributes of complex systems in a graph that can be modeled computationally. Traditional rules (codes of conduct) are proscriptive (non-deterministic), defining what is prohibited, thereby producing autonomous environments where agents had control over their immediate environment. In comparison, contemporary rules of the built environment (building codes) are prescriptive (deterministic), subscribing definite actions that need to take place by the stake-holder (agent) neglecting user needs and preferences. The application of these traditional rules system increased the agent’s autonomy and freedom of action. It also helped establish stronger social networks among agents, which resulted in a resilient environment.

summary This paper presents part of CORK’EWS, a research work developed within the framework of the Digital Architecture Advanced Program 2012/13 at ISCTE-IUL. The main goal of this investigation was to develop a parametric, customizable and adaptive wall system designed for environmental performance. Moreover, the system is based on standard industrial products: expanded cork blocks produced by Amorim Insulation industries. CAD/CAM resources were the essential tools of the research process, where fundamental and practical knowledge is integrated to understand the microstructure morphological properties of the raw material – cork – and its derivate – natural expanded cork. These properties were upscale and adapted to create a wall with an optimized solar control environmental performance. The result is a digitally fabricated prototype of a new customizable industrial product, adaptable to specific environmental conditions and installation setups being therefore easily commercialized. From microstructural morphology to macroscale construction, the research explores new application possibilities through morphogenesis and opens new possible markets for these customizable products.

summary With the invention of computers, Architecture and other Engineering disciplines have undergone revolutionary developments offering new opportunities for improving efficiency and opening new frontiers for creativity. For example in architecture and urban planning, the discussions have been extended from conventional writings to cover cyberspace, virtual architecture and digital city. Moreover, computers have helped in the realization of many complex projects that would be inconceivable with traditional drawing techniques. This is clearly demonstrated in the works of Frank Gehry's, Zaha Hadid, Daniel Libeskind and many others. In deed, digital techniques have changed the design creative process and how the architects think. Traditionally the structured development architectural ideas from 2D drawings (plans, sections, elevations) towards 3D resolution has been replaced by more interactive approach of 2D & 3D. The changes that digital techniques have brought to the field of Architecture; including practice and education, can obviously be viewed from different angles and incite many discussions and questions. However, the purpose of this presentation is to discuss the role of digital techniques within the overall framework of project management in Gulf Housing Engineering. It starts the discussion with a brief on architecture and digital techniques in the Gulf Region, especially during the “boom period”; a period characterized by rapid production of buildings relying heavily on virtual images. It is against this background, the role of digital techniques is evaluated from a practice point of view. In fact in GHE, digital means are integral parts of the holistic project delivery process starting form initiation, to various design stages to construction ending with project completion. In this process emphasis is paid to the inter-relationships between IT Systems and Quality Control which in turn facilitate measuring, monitoring and reporting on various managerial, technical and design and budgetary aspects of the project. The presentation is supported by real case studies of GHE portfolio. It emphasizes that digital techniques should be an integral part of an overall process and should be seen as means to enhance efficiency and creativity; and should contribute to the betterment of the built environment

summary The Emergent Reefs project thrives on the potential that emerge from a coherent utilization of the environment’s inherent ecological structure for its own transformation and evolution, using an approach based on digitally simulated ecosystems and sparkled by the possibilities and potential of large-scale 3D printing technology. Considering tourism as an inevitable vector of environmental change, the project aims to direct its potential and economic resources towards a positive transformation, providing a material substrate for the human-marine ecosystem integration with the realization of spaces for an underwater sculpture exhibition. Such structures will also provide a pattern of cavities which, expanding the gradient of microenvironmental conditions, break the existing homogeneity in favor of systemic heterogeneity, providing the spatial and material preconditions for the repopulation of marine biodiversity. Starting from a digital simulation of a synthetic local ecosystem, a generative technique based on multi-agent systems and continuous cellular automata (put into practice from the theoretical premises in Alan Turing’s paper “The Chemical basis of Morphogenesis” through reaction-diffusion simulation) is implemented in a voxel field at several scales giving the project a twofold quality: the implementation of reaction diffusion generative strategy within a non-isotropic 3-dimensional field and integration with the large-scale 3D printing fabrication system patented by D-Shape®. Out of these assumptions and in the intent of exploiting the expressive and tectonic potential of such technology, the project has been tackled exploring voxel-based generative strategies. Working with a discrete lattice eases the simulation of complex systems and processes across multiple scales (including non-linear simulations such as Computational Fluid-Dynamics) starting from local interactions using, for instance, algorithms based on cellular automata, which then can be translated directly to the physical production system. The purpose of Emergent-Reefs is to establish, through strategies based on computational design tools and machine-based fabrication, seamless relationships between three different aspects of the architectural process: generation, simulation and construction, which in the case of the used technology can be specified as guided growth.

summary Our work is to enable partners of a construction project (building owner, architect, engineer, etc.) to share all the technical data produced and manipulated during the building process, by setting up interfaces for an accessible information system via the internet. Our system would be able to deliver an answer to a user to a particular question asked. The system links databases and allows building partners to access and to manipulate specific information. This paper covers the information structure model based on building construction knowledge and the access to user-relevant information. First, the paper aims to establish the state of the art of the information systems available today in the building construction field. Second, we present the contribution of our research to the description of the building elements (foundations, ramps, stairs, etc.), where information is share by partners who are distant from one another and focused on fields of expertise that are distinct but concurrent. Our system links distributed databases and provides an updated building representation that is being enriched and refined all along the building life cycle. It consists of 3D representations of the building as well as data that are associated with each graphical entity (walls, slabs, beams, etc.).

summary In the time since European architects first began using computers in the building design process, the digital revolution has transformed how architects use planning tools completely. Today, digital tools are an indispensable part of planning practice. Besides a wide variety of digital modeling tools, parametric tools offer architects diverse options for generating cybernetic building models as BIM-models or homeostatic parametric geometry models. Cybernetic models help us to describe the buildings as a system and can improve planning efficiency. The aim of planning is to construct or fabricate an end result. The integration of digital fabrication methods in the digital chain is a fundamental goal if architects are to benefit from the progressive development of computer controlled machine tools. Fabrication integrated digital models can automate the planning process up to the production stage and enable the efficient fabrication of building components. The increased efficiency of planning and fabrication has facilitated a growing proliferation of buildings of increasing geometric complexity. Computers can open a door to the realization of new forms, spaces and construction systems to architects that understand the principles of fabrication-integrated cybernetic modeling.

summary This paper demonstrates a preliminary research and teaching investigation that attempts to use virtual forces in order to achieve interaction behavior between individual components as mechanism for the development of physical prototypes in various scales. Through case studies, the current research examines possibilities for the design of global systems, structural components and joints aiming to construct prototypes that can be characterized by continuity in their forms, structures and materials. In parallel, a number of questions are raised. Is the process from design to fabrication linear? What can be the relation between digital and physical processes? In which level this integration can be achieved? This work attempts to investigate the application of such methodology, both in design and fabrication, and to examine its contribution in the design and construction process.

summary This article aims to promote the discussion about how the adoption of Building Information Modeling systems in management processes and three-dimensional geometric modeling can interfere in the design process and construction of complex shapes in architecture. To that end, we assembled a theoretical-practical referential about the use of non-Euclidean forms in contemporary architecture and BIM tools, illustrated with iconic design processes developed by Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid. Finally, there was the importance of BIM tools to a new understanding of architecture, by enabling the construction of complex shapes.

summary With the growing demand for mock-up integration into late design and pre-construction phases, there is an increasing gap between the virtual design model of the building and the construction model. The gap is reinforced by lack of strong iterative exchanges between design and fabrication and consequently the construction of the building skin systems. This paper will discuss the research being conducted using virtual mock-ups as an earlier insertion of fabrication parameters into design process and presents a solution to bridge this gap. Studies of model integration will be introduced using component-based 3D-CAD modeling to link front and end user scenarios.

summary This paper addresses the design and fabrication of non-uniform structural shell systems. Structural shells, particularly gridshells, have a long history but due to their complexity and the accompanying high cost of construction, their application has been limited. The research proposes a method for integrating the design and fabrication processes such that complex double curved reticulated frames can be constructed efficiently, from prefabricated components, requiring significantly less formwork than is typical. A significant aspect of the method has been the development of software tools that allow for both algorithmic form-finding and the direct control of robotic fabrication equipment from within the same modelling package. A recent case-study is examined where the methodology has been applied to construct a reticulated shell structure in the form of a partial vault. Components were prefabricated using 6-axis robotic fabrication equipment. Individual parts are designed such that the assembly of components guides the form of the vault, requiring no centring to create the desired shape. Algorithmically generated machine instructions controlled a sequence of three tool changes for each part, using a single modular fixture, greatly increasing accuracy. The complete integration of computational design techniques and fabrication methodologies now enables the economical deployment of non-uniform structurally optimised reticulated frames.

summary Stereotomy originated as a technique that accumulated theoretical and practical knowledge on stone material properties and construction. At its peak in the nineteenth century, by pushing the structure and construction limits, it gained the ability of using "the weight of the stone against itself by making it hover in space through the very weight that should make it fall down" (Perrault 1964, cited Etelin, 2012). The modern architectural tectonics, based on structural comprehension in architecture, found no value in stereotomy beyond its early, Gothic period. Similarly, digital architectural theory recognized in Gothic the early examples of a material systems. This paper reassesses stereotomy at its fundamental levels, as a material system based on generative processes that assimilate structure and construction through parameterization. In this way, a theoretical framework is established that exposes stereotomy's intrinsic potentials: the continuity of historic and contemporary examples, overlaps between current research endeavours, and its genuine relevance for contemporary digital architecture.

summary This article describes an initial stage of development of a computer system aimed at helping undergraduate students to understand behaviour and processes occurring in construction elements. The system can be seen as an interactive book presenting and familiarising students with real laboratory tests. Apart from concentrating on the development, authors offered an overview of various computer systems so-far used in undergraduate engineering education. At the end of the article first comments and conclusions are presented.

summary An emerging need for interactive architecture is currently making buildings mutable, flexible in use, and adaptable to changes in climate by introducing robotic systems. However, the feasibility of the seamless integration of building construction details and kinetic robotics has become a critical issue for developing robotic architecture. The objective of this work is to develop a robotic architecture with an emphasis on the integration of cellular robotics with a distributed kinetic building surface. The kinetic building surface integrates an actuating system, a localization and remote control system, which become part of the kinetic building system. This paper presents a systematic framework by reviewing theories and related work of robotic architecture and automated control. An architectural design scheme is proposed to simulate a scenario of application in a physical space. The functionality of the electrical and control system and the integration of the effects of actual construction were examined by a prototype of a kinetic surface. Our prototype presents a feasible construction method, and a prominent energy-saving effect. The potential strength and restrictions of the cellular robotic approach to architectural applications are discussed. The applicability of the prototype system and issues about controlling the behavior of spatial robots are demonstrated in this paper.
