title Agent Provocateur - BIM In The Academic Design Studio

summary Building Information Modeling challenges academia to question the fundamental roles of abstraction and simulation in design education. Architectural education and practice assume a traditional set of visual conventions at varied scales and levels of detail, that when taken in concert signifies a whole, complete idea of a building, a correspondence between design intent and interpretation, between the representation of ideas and the design of buildings. BIM viewed as provocateur to these assumptions provides potential critical analysis of how architectural design is taught. Academia must seek out new design methodologies for exploring architecture that reflect the representational shift of BIM by developing teaching methods that reprioritize ways of seeing, thinking and making. This paper describes a studio model that seeks out new active methods for exploring architecture that embrace this shift by developing processes that provoke novel ways to reconcile the traditions of abstraction and the opportunities of synthetic simulation.

summary The concepts and applications of Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD) have a predominant presence and impact on architectural design innovation and creativity. ASCAAD, in its 6th international conference, invited the learnt society of academics, researchers and professionals to debate the ubiquitous emerging role of CAAD in underpinning innovative design thinking processes and research in design education. The conference theme covered the following issues:  Computational research in design pedagogy and in practice  Intelligent agents, generative and parametric design  Building Information Modeling and Computer-supported design collaboration  Ubiquitous computing and interactive environments  Urban/ City/ regional planning and digital Modeling  Digital tools in design and construction  Mass customization Selected papers have been updated in this publication to reflect the constant quest to balance architectural thinking with operative techniques. It is well acknowledged that the advent of computation and information technology had profoundly altered architectural thinking. Design software and numerical fabrication have recast the role of form giving and shaping environments in architecture and opened up unprecedented opportunities of investigation and links with other scientific domains such as biomimcry, parametric design and modeling of urban and building environments. In this issue authors suggest a continuum between architectural analytical thinking and CAAD systems. Looking at the collaboration between authors of various backgrounds also strengthens this narrative that architecture is expanding beyond its traditional enquiry into historical and theoretical aspects into the world of multi-desciplinarity. It is evident from the diverse publications that CAAD is designed and utilized to expand the architectural pedagogy and practice into initiating and opening up the exploratory grounds of creation and productivity in design.

summary This paper reports on the initial findings of an Undergraduate Research on Social Housing Program implemented in the city of Limeira, making use of a Building Information Modeling platform as a methodological procedure. The research was designed to enable students to better understand BIM in a hands-on, collaborative environment. A virtual information model of Housing Units and Housing Complex was created, and represents their real physical building components. The initial results portray BIM as especially useful to Civil Construction students, as fostering an integral environment where students are readily enabled to synthesize the knowledge of the art of construction.

summary The building technology class “Parametric Design” simultaneously teaches thermal and daylight performance simulation to novice users, usually Master of Architecture students. Own buildings are created, analysed and geometrically modified during the design process, resulting in structures that are energetically pre-optimized. It is shown that energy demand and daylight utilization can be signifi cantly improved while taking into account formal considerations. Departing from a design process model that gives preference to either engineering or design thinking, multi-modal decision-making is diagnosed to be mediated by hybrid or multivalent representations, necessitating a shift in how inter-domain design knowledge flows might be understood. Opposed to purely linear or iterative process assumptions, a fluent state model of interconnected domains of analytic inquiry is proposed.

summary 4D CAD is more and more used in construction education curricula. The main interest of this technology is its ability to simulate real sequencing of construction tasks in order to confront the student with real-life construction management issues. This article presents a course for architects and construction engineers. It describes the teaching of the structural principles of high-rise buildings, using 4D simulations as a support to the analysis of the characteristics of existing projects. The pedagogical interest of 4D CAD is described in the article through assessments of students and the teaching team. Particular feedback is given about modeling and visualization guidelines for the purpose of the pedagogical use of 4D CAD.

summary This article focuses on modeling and simulation of urban information of a prototype on Geographic Information System – GIS for a historic commercial district in Salvador, Bahia. The conceptual modeling refers to the system’s symbolic representation, the spatial and topological relationships of real object with other in scenario, and attributes database settings. The geometric modeling refers to three-dimensional models that represent urban visual elements. The simulation generates previews for periods or themes, in response to interactive queries. This GIS has been relevant to broaden reflection on the process of urban landscape transformation, in order to instrumentalize participatory urban planning and heritage preservation.

summary For most architects, it is not easy to transform their freeform designs into buildable constructions without precise knowledge on a specifi c material and its construction process.A workfl ow is introduced in this paperand it could be adopted by architects concerning the works of predicting the tiling results in the earliest design stage.The workfl ow involves pre-processing which could help architects design rational surfaces, thus saving a lot of work in the paneling process later on. The physically based modeling engine will simulate the constraints of a pre-selected material and therefore ensures a feasible result. The post-process involves visual feedback of the result as well as data formatting which help to establish a seamless connection between construction processes.

summary Nat-Vent is a modeling system to parametrically simulate natural ventilation of buildings in early stages of design. The Nat-Vent approach comprehends a set of architecture design tools that were connected to an equation solver through a Model Based System Engineering tool (SysML). SysML, which is a general purpose modeling language for systems engineering, is able to mathematically interoperate between architects and engineers while keeping model consistency between them. This implementation enhances the architectural side of design by offering a simple ventilation tool that can be used by architects and engineers, and also delivers geometric feedback from ventilation performance-based decisions.

summary The promising directions in current design practice and teaching relate to creativity with digital tools in the context of building information modelling (BIM), performance analysis, and simulations as well as digital materiality (computational simulations of materials) and dynamics-based behaviour. summary We propose a crowdsourcing simulation environment that brings human intention into the urban simulator. Our fundamental goal is to simulate urban sustainability by employing direct human interaction. In this paper we present a prototype mobile phone application that implements a novel transportation mode detection algorithm. The mobile phone application runs in the background and continuously collects data from the built-in acceleration and network location sensors. The collected data is analyzed by the transportation mode detection algorithm and automatically partitioned into activity segments. A key observation of our work is that walking activity can be robustly detected in the data stream and acts as a separator for partitioning the data stream into other activity segments. Each vehicle activity segment is then sub-classifi ed according to the type of used vehicle. Our approach yields high accuracy despite the low sampling interval and not requiring GPS data that bring minimized device power consumption. Ultimately, the collected information can be translated into real-time urban behavior and will indicate sustainability, both on the personal and the city level.

summary Important progress towards the development of a system that enables multi-criteria design optimisation has recently been demonstrated during a research collaboration between Autodesk’s DesignScript development team, the University of Bath and the engineering consultancy Buro Happold. This involved integrating aspects of the Robot Structural Analysis application, aspects of the Ecotect building performance application and a specialist form finding solver called SMART Form (developed by Buro Happold) with DesignScript to create a single computation environment. This environment is intended for the generation and evaluation of building designs against both structural and building performance criteria, with the aim of expediently supporting computational optimisation and decision making processes that integrate across multiple design and engineering disciplines. A framework was developed to enable the integration of modeling environments with analysis and process control, based on the authors’ case studies and experience of applied performance driven design in practice. This more generalised approach (implemented in DesignScript) enables different designers and engineers to selectively configure geometry definition, form finding, analysis and simulation tools in an open-ended system without enforcing any predefined workflows or anticipating specific design strategies and allows for a full range of optimisation and decision making processes to be explored. This system has been demonstrated to practitioners during the Design Modeling Symposium, Berlin in 2011 and feedback from this has suggested further development.

summary The application of digital design methods and technologies related to BIM and Integrated Practice Delivery are altering the how and what of architectural design. The way contemporary architecture is conceived and made is being transformed through the digital methods, processes and applications used in BIM. How architectural education and the design studio model evolve to reflect, interpret, translate, or challenge the multiplicitous and simultaneously variable modes of contemporary practice present opportunity and risk to this generation of digital scholars, educators and practitioners. Might we re-conceive the design studio as a venue in which a critical dialogue about how the many facets of architectural design practice are engaged? The possibilities afforded by BIM and Integrated Practice Delivery and digital design technologies are increasingly affecting what we make and simultaneously how we make as architects. Digital modeling of both geometry and information is replacing (or displacing) digital drawing. We see diminishing returns of the value of transforming three-dimensional spatial/formal ideas into two-dimensional conventional abstractions of those complex ideas. This comprehensive thinking promoted by BIM processes is one of the key advantages of using BIM leading to true design innovation. The reiterative learning process of design promoted in BIM promotes a rethinking of design studio education.

summary Edible Infrastructures is an investigation into a projective mode of urbanism which considers food as an integral part of a city's metabolic infrastructure. Working with algorithms as design tools, we explore the generative potential of such a system to create an urban ecology that: provides for its residents via local, multi-scalar, distributed food production, reconnects urbanites with their food sources, and de-couples food costs from fossil fuels by limiting transportation at all levels, from source to table. The research is conducted through the building up of a sequence of algorithms, beginning with the ‘Settlement Simulation’, which couples consumers to productive surface area within a cellular automata type computational model. Topological analysis informs generative operations, as each stage builds on the output of the last. In this way we explore the hierarchical components for a new Productive City, including: the structure and programming of the urban circulatory network, an emergent urban morphology based around productive urban blocks, and opportunities for new architectural typologies. The resulting prototypical Productive City questions the underlying mechanisms that shape modern urban space and demonstrates the architectural potential of mathematical modeling and simulation in addressing complex urban spatial and programmatic challenges.

summary This paper describes the development of a design and prototype production system for novel structural use of networked small components of wood deploying elastic and plastic bending. The design process engaged with a significant number of different overlapping and interrelated design criteria and parameters, a high level of complexity, custom component geometry and the development of digital tools and procedures for real time feedback and productivity. The aims were to maximize learning in the second order cybernetic sense through empirical experience from analogue modeling, measurement and digital visual feedback and to capture new knowledge specifically regarding intrinsic material behavior applied and tested in a heterogeneous networked context. The outcome was a prototype system of design ideation, conceptualization, development and production that integrated real time material performance simulation and feedback. The outcome was amplified through carrying out the research over a series of workshops with distinct foci and participation. Two full scale demonstrators have so far been constructed and exhibited as outputs of the process.

summary As host organizers of the Smartgeometry 2012 Conference, professors of Architecture, and as principals in design firms, our work aims to use as a productive resistance the notion of Material Intensity described below as both a foil and measure to current concepts of simulation and intensive modeling in architectural computation. The holding of SG 2012 aimed to stage this resistance in the form of workshop, round-table discussions, lectures and symposia, with the outcome attempting to define a new synthetic notion of material intensities in modes of architectural production. This paper aims to form the basis of a continued exploration and development of this work. In summary we focused on: 1-Intensive thinking as derived from the material sciences as an actual and philosophical framework that emphasizes qualitative attributes, which is likened to behavior, simulation, and dynamic modeling. Extensive attributes lead to analytical, representational and static modeling. 2-Material practices can also be formed and as a result of this method of thinking. As demonstrated by the glasswork of Evan Douglis, ‘paintings’ by Perry Hall—the managed complexity possible by working with materials during intensive states of change allow for scalar, morphological and performative shifts according to a designer’s criteria. 3- Although both are necessary and actually complement each other, architects need to ‘catch-up’ to intensive thinking in process and modeling strategies. Our methods rely on static modeling that yield often complicated frameworks and results, wherein accepting methods of dynamic modeling suggests the capacity to propose complex and nuanced relationships and frameworks.
