summary As we stand with our feet on earth’s outermost surface we build an architecture today that is much like it was several thousand years earlier, in an attempt to extend that outer shell with one of our own making. Artificial masses are built from a refinement of this existing geologic layer into materials of stone, steel, concrete, and glass that assemble to produce new pockets of space through the buildings they create. However, the sixth century BC writer Thales of Miletus put a different perspective on this: he insisted that we live, in reality, not on the summit of a solid earth but at the bottom of an ocean of air (Holmyard 1931). And so, as architecture continues to build up the outermost layer of earth’s surface through a mimicking, embellishing, and enhancing of the materials which it comes from, it raises the question of why we have not brought a similar relationship to the materialities at the bottom of this “ocean” of air to create the spaces we call architecture. If you were looking to level a complaint with the architectural profession, stating that it has not been ambitious enough in scope would not be one. Architects have never shied away from the opportunity to design everything from the building’s shell to the teaspoon used to stir your sugar in its matching cup. But it would seem that the profession has developed a rather large blind spot in terms of what it sees as a malleable material with which to engage. Architects have made assumptions as to what is beyond our scope of action, refraining from engaging a range of material variables due to a belief that the task would be too great or simply beyond our physical control. So even though we are enveloped by them continuously, both on the exterior as well as the interior of our buildings, it must be assumed that the particles, waves, and frequencies of energy that move around us are thought by architects to be too faint and shaky to unload upon them any heavy obligations, that they are too unwieldy for us to control to create the physical boundaries of separation, security, and movement required of architecture. This has resulted in a cultivated set of blinders that essentially defines architecture as a set of mediation devices (surfaces, walls, and inert masses) for tempering the environmental context it is situated in from the individuals and activities within. The spaces we inhabit are defined by their ability to decide what gets in and what stays out (sunlight, precipitation, winds). We place our organizational demands and aesthetic opinions on the surfaces that mediate these variables rather than seeing them as available for manipulation as a building material on their own. The intention here is to recalibrate the materialities that make up that environmental context to build architecture. The starting point is a rather naive question: can we design the energy systems that course in and around us daily as an architectural material so as to take on the needs of activities, securities, and lifestyles associated with architecture? Can the variables that we would normally mediate against instead be heightened and amplified so as to become the architecture itself? That which many would incorrectly dismiss as simply “air” today—thought to be homogeneous, scale-less, and vacant due in part to the limits of our human sensory system to perceive more fully otherwise—might tomorrow be further articulated, populated, and layered so as to become a materiality that will build spatial boundaries, define activities of individuals and movement, and act as architectural space. Our environmental context consists of a diverse range of materials (particles and waves of energy, spectrum of light, sound waves, and chemical particles) that can be manipulated and formed to meet our needs. The opportunity before us today is to embrace the needs of organizational structures and aesthetics by designing the active context that surrounds us through the material energies that define it.

summary Ecological and environmental issues are playing an important and larger role in corporate and manufacturing strategies. For complete creative design process, buildings require both for construction and manufacturing, due to their comparatively long life cycle for maintenance, significant raw material and energy resources. Thinking in terms of product life cycles is one of the challenges facing manufacturers today. “Life Cycle Management” (LCM) considers the product life cycle as a whole and optimizes the interaction of product design, construction, manufacturing and life cycle activities. The goal of this approach is to protect resources and maximize the effectiveness during usage by means of Life Cycle Assessment, Product Data Management, Technical Support and last but not least by Life Cycle Costing. In this paper the environmental consciousness issues pertaining to design, construction, manufacturing and operations management are presented through computer intelligent technologies of this 21century. So, this paper shows the existing approaches of LCM and discusses their visions and further development.

summary The application of digital design methods and technologies related to BIM and Integrated Practice Delivery are altering the how and what of architectural design. The way contemporary architecture is conceived and made is being transformed through the digital methods, processes and applications used in BIM. How architectural education and the design studio model evolve to reflect, interpret, translate, or challenge the multiplicitous and simultaneously variable modes of contemporary practice present opportunity and risk to this generation of digital scholars, educators and practitioners. Might we re-conceive the design studio as a venue in which a critical dialogue about how the many facets of architectural design practice are engaged? The possibilities afforded by BIM and Integrated Practice Delivery and digital design technologies are increasingly affecting what we make and simultaneously how we make as architects. Digital modeling of both geometry and information is replacing (or displacing) digital drawing. We see diminishing returns of the value of transforming three-dimensional spatial/formal ideas into two-dimensional conventional abstractions of those complex ideas. This comprehensive thinking promoted by BIM processes is one of the key advantages of using BIM leading to true design innovation. The reiterative learning process of design promoted in BIM promotes a rethinking of design studio education.

summary This paper presents an investigation of probative works of architectural thought and production executed in various forms of digital design and computational media. The applied design research focuses on an examination of the procedure or process constructed to both develop exact, precise digital models and constructed processes that result in design outcomes that cannot be pre-visioned. The changing position of the conceptualisation within the design process continually changes the relationship of the digital work and the computational framework. The work challenges one to interpret design processes of translation and transformation, through the continual oscillation between developed in pursuit of known results and constructed methods for making, in an effort to unravel the pretext of the singular point of view to reveal the intention of the design conception(s). The projects discussed here focus on relationships between the projection of space in architectural representation and the production of architectural form through complex geometries relative to discontinuities and the way in which they agitate and alter one another. DIGITAL conception(s) operate across three primary areas of research; animation, conceptualisation and fabrication. The work oscillates between digital and physical artefacts that intertwine digital/physical workflows while simultaneously engaging temporal issues of time based media through motion graphics and animate constructs.

summary The problem considered in this paper is: “In what way do we design?” This paper concentrates on the early creative stages of the design process during which the designer gradually gathers the information about the problem, applying appropriate rules, tools and media. If the tools are chosen as a starting point of consideration, designing may be analysed as manual or digital. If we chose the medium - design may be considered as physical or virtual. The main thesis of this paper is that designing proceeds somewhere in between. “Somewhere in between” means the space where manual, digital, virtual are mixing, overlapping, and transforming one into the other. As a case study the process of designing of blurred function object is presented. In this experimental design studio we paid particular attention to the design process and we searched for the answer to the following questions: how to find an idea (what tools/media are helpful), how to express, fi x and transform that idea? In the paper the examples of students’ work will be presented and discussed.

summary This paper discusses an educational design methodology for undergraduate studio instruction, which uses a systematic and research based design approach. Based on Lars Spuybroek’s methodology that was originally developed as a one-year graduate and postgraduate studio, a new method for undergraduate teaching has been developed. The paper will discuss Spuybroek’s methodology, as developed for the graduate and postgraduate program, and explain its adaption for undergraduate studio instruction. Spuybroek’s approach is based on a model that starts with research in systems in general that is them tuned to a certain set of architectural questions and developed into parametric buildings in a stepwise procedure by delaying the specifics of site and program.

This paper proposes new software components for interfacing industrial robots with physical computing microcontrollers, thereby allowing the customisation of physical tools for industrial robots. By pairing physical computing with rapid prototyping, architects are able to design and prototype individual fabrication processes for industrial robots.

Recently, the scientific community has been developing applications using the concepts of mobile and ubiquitous computing in this area of tourism. In this perspective, in the present article we propose a Ubiquitous Tourist Guide that is context-aware. Among the context information used, we highlight tourists’ profiles, their needs and restrictions. We developed a general model of an Electronic Tourist Guide and a specific prototype for the Caminhos de Pedra itinerary, a touristic region in the city of Bento Gonçalves in the Rio Grande do Sul state.

summary Agent-oriented modelling is one of the simulation methods for emergent behavior of a complex system that could be considered for application of urban city structures. Using advanced script techniques, the behavior and evolution of structures in the bottom-up strategies for the development of environment could be simulated in architecture and urbanism as well. The paper presents a research subproject in the area of verifi cation of the processes of spatial and social interaction of the agents according to the logic of defined intrinsic rules of Swarm behavior in the simulation model of the selected area. The research builds mainly upon two selected requirements of the bottom-up strategy: the approach distances to places of interest and mutual standoff distances between urban elements.

summary This paper develops a methodological approach for use in design practice which combines an external simulation tool (EnergyPlus™) with an evo-lutionary optimisation strategy for the form-finding of complex fenestra-tion systems. On one hand, based on previous research, it presents a novel approach for the shape morphogenesis that exploits a generative algorithm technique to control a limited set of parameters whilst on the other hand it facilitates the integration of a simulation tool capable of handling increasing levels of complexity with greater data interoperabil-ity. In doing so it will argue the heuristic potential of the proposed meth-od in aiding the designers’ decision making whilst increasing the formal possibilities of their final design solutions.

summary The research presented further is part of the Digital Alberti research project, which aims to assess the infl uence of Leon Batista Alberti’s theory on Portuguese architecture, through the use of digital technologies. One of the project tasks implied computational and physical modelling of Alberti’s column system. Development of the computational model implied decoding Alberti’s treatise on architecture De re aedifi catoria into a consistent set of parameters and relationships, and then implementing these into generative parametric computer programs through visual programming language Grasshopper. This computational model is able to automatically generate physical models of classical columns according to Alberti’s canons. These digital models were then materialized through production of physical models, through rapid prototyping and digital fabrication technologies. Special attention is given to the CNC stone milling of a Corinthian capital.

title Spatial ability, creativity, and studio performance in architectural design

summary Architectural design is a multifaceted discipline that requires many abilities, in particular creativity and spatial ability. In order to identify the relationships among spatial ability, creativity, and studio performance, an exploratory study was conducted at one Midwestern university in the USA. Twenty-one freshman architecture students participated in the study, which involved three tasks: (a) the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking that measures fluency and originality in creativity, (b) a group of general spatial ability tests, and (c) the computer-based Architectural Spatial Ability Test. Students’ scores on the tasks were compared with their studio performance grades using SPSS. Results show that studio performance correlated with the ASAT but did not correlate with the TTCT or a group of general spatial ability tests. These findings indicate that a student’s performing well does not necessarily mean that she or he can generate many different alternatives (fluency) or original ideas (originality) nor that the student possesses general spatial abilities. The findings show the complexity of architectural design components and reveal beginning design students’ architectural abilities.

summary Gridshells are highly efficient, lightweight structures which can span long distances with minimal use of material (Vassallo & Malek 2017). One of the most promising and novel categories of gridshells are bending-active (elastic) systems (Lienhard & Gengnagel 2018), which are composed of flexible members (Kuijenhoven & Hoogenboom 2012). Timber elastic gridshells can be site-sprung or sequentially erected (geodesic). While a lot of research focus is on the site-sprung ones, the methods for design of sequentially-erected geodesic gridshells remained underdeveloped (Cichocka 2020). The main objective of the paper is to introduce a method of generating regular geodesic grid patterns on free-form surfaces and to examine its applicability to design structurally feasible geodesic gridshells. We adopted differential geometry methods of generating regular bidirectional geodesic grids on free-form surfaces. Then, we compared the structural performance of the regular and the irregular grids of the same density on three free-form surfaces. The proposed method successfully produces the regular geodesic grid patterns on the free-form surfaces with varying curvature-richness. Our analysis shows that gridshells with regular grid configurations perform structurally better than those with irregular patterns. We conclude that the presented method can be readily used and can expand possibilities of application of geodesic gridshells.

summary This paper presents a general 3D shape grammar interpreter named GRAMATICA and illustrates its use for the implementation of several shape grammars, including the one used in the design module of a specifi c shape grammar for mass-customized housing, called DESIGNA. The underlying shape representation, generation and control are discussed. The resulting shape grammar interpreter tries to support designers’ ways of thinking and working by acting as a bridge between shape grammars, the formalism that captures a design process, and a CAD application, for post-processing the computed design. This bridge is implemented by Rosetta, which ensures portability among different CAD applications.

summary This article aims to discuss the importance of freehand drawings in the architectural projective process in the context of the digital age, through the use of tablets. It is intended to identify how these drawings, using tablets, keep the perception and the personal dash of each one. This research aims not only to review and update the drawing´s disciplines in the architecture courses - its practices and procedures - but also to discuss the actual role of representation - analogical or digital - and its interaction with others disciplines. The first research, done in 2011, indicated possibilities of interface with CAD, Revit and Sketch-up. The second part, in course in this year, 2012, is trying to experiment the use of tablets in three others disciplines: History of Architecture and Urbanism I, Landscaping and Project I, in the Instituto de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da USP, São Carlos, Brasil.

summary This paper describes our experiments with diagrammatic representations to think about design compositions and to learn from shared accretion of design knowledge. We describe here implementation of an online prototype that, on the one hand, offers interactive functionalities to externalize thinking about design compositions in the form of diagrams and, on the other hand, which acts also as a repository of diagrams that can be dynamically interrogated to find other proximate compositional thinking and ideas related to a particular design position. Put differently, the prototype helps both notate design thinking and draw out associations between separately notated design thinking.

title Sensing Touch Curtain: Soft Architecture and Augmented Communication

summary The Sensing Touch Curtain prototype demonstrates one type of sensing that can be woven into soft building components. It is a computational textile that senses the nearness of a person or people and registers absolute touch on fabric through capacitive sensing. Capacitive sensing measures position and distance between the textile and a target object by sending forth electric signals.The methods of construction, method of electronic weaving and ways to consider models for somatosensory textiles are discussed in the paper. The Sensing Touch project frames an expanded role for soft architecture enclosures.

summary The evolutionary algorithm contributes significantly to the search for solutions to difficult problems of understanding and problems that have more than one solution, and all of which are satisfactory. This method is used by some architects as an optimization technique for design process; furthermore it is a possibility to obtain solutions which may not have been imagined by the designer. The aim of this article is to introduce the main concepts of evolutionary algorithm and to explain its structure. The article ends with example of the application of evolutionary algorithms in solving design problems.

summary The present work part of the questioning about teaching models of CAD within an experimental didactic activity where questions emerge about possible formalism produced by direct application of technology in the generative processes of architectural objects. In this sense suggests a docent position in guiding the student as one who no longer plays in the formalization process geometries, but a builder of a critical process that requires attention to issues beyond form that assist the consolidation of a social actor.
