summary The study of wind conditions in cities is a significant factor in urban design in order to deal with issues related with pollution, wind pressures on buildings, and comfort on public spaces. This paper presents some results of a four-day workshop where some of the different techniques for simulating and visualising aerodynamic phenomena were explored. These technologies, classified as high-tech and low-tech tools, were used to investigate urban aerodynamic phenomena through parallel experiments, analysis, and eye observations. The experiments demonstrated that getting live feedbacks while interacting with the simulated aerodynamic phenomena is essential to improve the observers’ general comprehension of the phenomena. Our proposed method for studying aerodynamic phenomena, which integrates both low-tech and high-tech tools, facilitates designers to explore multiple options and configurations in the early stage of a design process.

summary This paper presents an analysis of Jardim São Francisco, a lowincome housing development in São Paulo, Brazil, using shape grammar as an analytical method. It is part of an ongoing research that aims at analyzing the different types of sitting in low-income housing developments and their consequences for public spaces. summary The article presents a graph-based spatial analysis toolset (“decoding spaces”components) which we have recently developed as an extension of the visual scripting language Grasshopper3D for Rhino. These tools directly integrate spatial analysis methods into CAD design software which can have a signifi cant effect on current design workfl ows. However,grasshopper doesn’t only enable the results of analyses to be used in the standard Rhino modelling environment. It also makes it possible to integrate spatial analysis into a parametric design approach as discussed in this paper. The functionality of this toolset is demonstrated using a simple urban design scenario where we introduce the idea of parametric patterns based on graph-measures.

summary The walkability of open spaces has been highlighted in current discussions about the production of designed environments in urban contexts (Matan, 2011). To contribute to this theme, this work selects the environmental comfort of open spaces as its element of study. The production of urban space was investigated, specifically in regard to urban morphology, understanding that city design directly influences environmental comfort (Jacobs, 1996). This work addresses the geographic context of low latitudes, specifically in hot and humid climate zones of Brazil, and, in this context, according to NBR 15220 (national performance standards), shading is one of the main comfort strategies, so solar incidence was the approached environmental phenomenon. Thus, this work presents a digital system that performs exploratory analysis on the correlations between urban form indicators and environmental performance indicators, specifically solar incidence. The method consists of three steps: urban form modeling (1), indicator measurement (2) and correlation analysis (3). In the first stage, different spatial sections of a city in Brazil were represented in the digital environment (1). This work’s implementation instrument is based on a City Information Modeling framework (Beirao et al., 2012). Visual Programming Interface (VPI) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tools were used, in addition to a Relational Database Management System (RDBMS). Then, for each urban clipping, the values of morphological indicators and the incidence of solar radiation were measured (2). Based on the values of the indicators, an exploration of their correlation was carried out by statistical methods (3). The results of the correlation analysis and their correspondent scatter plots are presented. Finally, possible applications of the results for the creation of prescriptive urban planning systems are discussed, seeking to promote a sustainable urban environment.

summary This research presents the development of a sensor oriented mobile AR system which realises geometric consistency using GPS, a gyroscope and a video camera which are mounted in a smartphone for urban landscape assessment. A low cost AR system with high flexibility is realised. Consistency of the viewing angle of a video camera and a CG virtual camera, and geometric consistency between a video image and 3DCG are verified. In conclusion, the proposed system was evaluated as feasible and effective.

summary This research paper concentrates on a conceptual framework for the creation of high-level procedural city models. A workflow is presented, which enables users to create city models in an intuitive way by using design-code-driven building typologies. This drastically advances traditional procedural city modelling where usually low-level implementations of city model components take place. New planning methods and instruments have to be developed for the growing demand of the rapid environmental, social and economic changes in cities and agglomerations. The presented method allows for quick visualization and iteration by using urban planning typologies.

summary Lack of affordable housing is a worldwide problem. Rapid urbanization, rural exodus, and poor governance policies have contributed to the problem and, in response, low-income populations resort to self-construction. The result are informal settlements located predominantly in marginalized urban areas (United Nations, 2015) that develop with neither urban infrastructure nor compliance with building and planning codes (Lall et al., 2006; Patel et al., 2018; United Nations Human Settlements Programme, 2012) and, consequently, offer a poor-quality built environment. The goal of this paper is to methodologically identify physical aspects of such built environments that could be improved. We evaluate a case study, the Santa Marta favela in Brazil, using a holistic housing-quality assessment tool and local building and planning codes as reference. Our results identify the physical characteristics with lower quality standards in the case study and demonstrate the efficacy of the methodology introduced for this purpose.

summary Exploring problems through multiple alternatives is a key aspect of design. In this paper, we present a prototype system as an extension to existing parametric CAD tools that enables parallel generation and editing of design alternatives. The system is built on two fundamental ideas. First, use of subjunctive dependency graphs enables simultaneous work on multiple design variations. These graphs capture and reveal complex data flow across alternative parametric CAD models. Second, prototype-based modeling provides a weak notion of inheritance enabling incremental description of differences between alternatives. The system is intended to be general enough to be used in different CAD platforms and other systems using graph-based modeling. The three basic system functions are definition of alternatives (variations) using prototype-based modeling, structural and parametric divergences of the prototypes, and interactive comparison. The goal of this research is consistent with the general qualities expected from any creativity support tools: enabling exploration and simultaneous development of variations.

summary The bent timber laths of the Sound Bites gridshell create two types of performance space over an area of almost 100 m2. Such postformed gridshells are a wellestablished design solution for creating curved forms from linear elements. Extending principles developed since the 1970s, contemporary digital tools have been utilised to drive a renewed interest in them, primarily through so-called form-finding techniques which connect digital and material models through a simulation of shape under bending loads (Nettlebladt, 2013) and the definition of efficient structural geometry acting under compression loads only (Hernandez et. al., 2012). This paper describes the workflow conceived and implemented for the Sound Bites structure. A central challenge of the research was for such a workflow to allow for the principles of gridshell design to be engaged in parallel to other tight constraints and design drivers. As such it needed to facilitate close collaboration between architectural, engineering and fabrication experts. This workflow was tested in the design and realisation of the full-scale structure within a six-week period. The gridshell design was developed through the manipulation of the shape of two edge profiles and the shell form spanning between these. Architectural and fabrication constraints were met and the workflow allowed for a sufficient level of structural analysis to be fed back to inform the design.

summary Important progress towards the development of a system that enables multi-criteria design optimisation has recently been demonstrated during a research collaboration between Autodesk’s DesignScript development team, the University of Bath and the engineering consultancy Buro Happold. This involved integrating aspects of the Robot Structural Analysis application, aspects of the Ecotect building performance application and a specialist form finding solver called SMART Form (developed by Buro Happold) with DesignScript to create a single computation environment. This environment is intended for the generation and evaluation of building designs against both structural and building performance criteria, with the aim of expediently supporting computational optimisation and decision making processes that integrate across multiple design and engineering disciplines. A framework was developed to enable the integration of modeling environments with analysis and process control, based on the authors’ case studies and experience of applied performance driven design in practice. This more generalised approach (implemented in DesignScript) enables different designers and engineers to selectively configure geometry definition, form finding, analysis and simulation tools in an open-ended system without enforcing any predefined workflows or anticipating specific design strategies and allows for a full range of optimisation and decision making processes to be explored. This system has been demonstrated to practitioners during the Design Modeling Symposium, Berlin in 2011 and feedback from this has suggested further development.

summary Edible Infrastructures is an investigation into a projective mode of urbanism which considers food as an integral part of a city's metabolic infrastructure. Working with algorithms as design tools, we explore the generative potential of such a system to create an urban ecology that: provides for its residents via local, multi-scalar, distributed food production, reconnects urbanites with their food sources, and de-couples food costs from fossil fuels by limiting transportation at all levels, from source to table. The research is conducted through the building up of a sequence of algorithms, beginning with the ‘Settlement Simulation’, which couples consumers to productive surface area within a cellular automata type computational model. Topological analysis informs generative operations, as each stage builds on the output of the last. In this way we explore the hierarchical components for a new Productive City, including: the structure and programming of the urban circulatory network, an emergent urban morphology based around productive urban blocks, and opportunities for new architectural typologies. The resulting prototypical Productive City questions the underlying mechanisms that shape modern urban space and demonstrates the architectural potential of mathematical modeling and simulation in addressing complex urban spatial and programmatic challenges.

summary The use of the method "simulation" of the microclimate for an urban site presents much of interest; because this can serve as us observation and analysis of the consequences of various scenarios relating to the existence and the importance of the constituent elements in urban space. Wind in outdoor urban space is among the most difficult parameters to identify and control field given its instability. Currently, in the field of the ventilation, there are some outdoor spaces simulation tools, used to assess the flow of the wind at different spatial scales. The aim of this research is to demonstrate the effect of the urban geometry of the layout on the wind movement and the outdoor natural ventilation. However, this study investigated the effect on outdoor thermal comfort of a building layouts in a planned residential area situated in the city of Jijel humid Mediterranean region of Algeria. In order to improve outside comfort in this open space, a 3D numerical simulation tool ENVI-met 3.1 beta 4 was used to simulate the urban thermal climate taking into account various scenarios. summary GENE_ARCH is a Generative Design System that combines Pareto Genetic Algorithms with an advanced building energy simulation engine. This work explores its integration with a Shape Grammar, acting as GENE_ARCH’s shape generation module. The urban patio house typology is readdressed in a contemporary context, both by improving its energy-effi ciency standards, and by rethinking its role in the genesis of high-density urban areas, while respecting its specifi c spatial organization and cultural grounding. Field work was carried out in Marrakesh, surveying a number of patio houses which became the Corpus of Design, from where a Shape Grammar was extracted. The computational implementation of the patio house grammar was done within GENE_ARCH. The resulting program was able to generate new, alternative patio houses designs that were more energy effi cient, while respecting the traditional rules captured from the analysis of existing houses. After the computational system was fully implemented, it was possible to complete different sets of experiments. The first experiments kept more restrained rules, thus generating new designs that closer resembled the existing ones. The progressive relaxation of rules and constraints allowed for a larger number of variations to emerge. Analysis of energy results provide insight into the main patterns resulting from the evolutionary search processes, namely in terms of form factors of generated solutions, and urban densities achieved.

summary This research explores the relationship between unexpected outcomes generated through parametric design tools and the design creative process. We conducted an empirical study to observe how designers behave while encountering unexpected outcomes using parametric design tools as well as other kinds of design tools. From our study, there are some indications that the space of possible design solutions of the participants was expanded with the existence of unexpected outcomes. The preliminary result is encouraging. Further studies may need to address experience designers and novice designers separately.

summary This paper aims to contribute to the discussion and our understanding of time-based mapping of visual information. Our approach is to enhance the traditional contextual static analysis through the acknowledgement of the body and the senses as key indicators of perceptual spatial experience. The time-based mapping paradigms have produced different ways of designing space by leveraging perceptual and other sensorial understanding, leading to the formation of variables (or parameters) which at the same time turn themselves as catalysts for other variables. The potential for a constantly evolving reinterpretation of the perceptual experience and for associated paradigm to shift suggest a multiplicity of design possibilities for urban areas that also need to adapt to the new requirements of contemporary living. In essence, the paper will bring to light the deployment of tools (digital and analogue) to turn static invisible data to dynamic visible data. In other words, we want to explore how the data can be treated as a generative system, enabling students and tutors alike to experience space which accounts for sensory performances and behaviours within the space.

For this evaluation, user based experiences will be developed, where digital sketching task will be done, using HID devices as Mouse, Wacom tablet and Low-cost-infrared-interactive-whiteboard developed by Johnny Chung Lee (WiiMote Whiteboard). Goal is to determine comparative benefits and downsides between this HID devices in digital sketching.

summary This paper presents an inverse pedestrian urban design method and an initial set of parametric tools for conceptual design support at the pedestrian urban scale. Inverse pedestrian urban design concerns the derivation of urban design parameters from a local context in order to produce better informed and situated designs. The tools concern the rationalization of street network and building form. Some of the parameters that are used within the tools are view angles (visibility analysis) and distances between target points (accessibility analysis). The paper elaborates on inverse urban design, presents some case studies and tools, and touches upon design patterns and their alignment to design processes.

summary 4D CAD is more and more used in construction education curricula. The main interest of this technology is its ability to simulate real sequencing of construction tasks in order to confront the student with real-life construction management issues. This article presents a course for architects and construction engineers. It describes the teaching of the structural principles of high-rise buildings, using 4D simulations as a support to the analysis of the characteristics of existing projects. The pedagogical interest of 4D CAD is described in the article through assessments of students and the teaching team. Particular feedback is given about modeling and visualization guidelines for the purpose of the pedagogical use of 4D CAD.

summary This paper describes a method for the design and fabrication of complex funicular structures fromdiscrete precast concrete elements. The research proposes that through the integration of digitalform-finding techniques, computational file-to-fabrication workflows, and innovative sustainableconcrete casting techniques, complex funicular structures can be constructed using prefabricatedelements in a practical, affordable, and materially efficient manner.A recent case study is examined, in which the methodology has been used to construct a pavilion.Custom-written dynamic relaxation software was used to define the overall form and successivealgorithms; it then defined each component’s unique geometry, unrolled into flat shapes, andnested all parts into cut-files. PETG plastic sheets were two-dimensionally laser cut and folded toproduce the unique casting molds. The case study was carried out in collaboration between theAarhus School of Architecture and the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS). Basic research incasting techniques defined the framework for the design process, and a custom-written dynamicrelaxation software application became the primary form-generating tool in the design process ofa constructed pavilion. Fabrication and construction constraints were embedded within the designof both the overall structure and its components. Finite element analysis [FEA] was completed inorder to verify the form-finding results, to ensure structural stability, and to direct adjustments ofthe structure during the design process.The constructed pavilion case study, constructed in a very short time, for low cost and with relativelyunskilled labor, demonstrates that the integration of algorithmic form-finding techniques, CNCfabrication workflows, and the use of innovative PETG folded-mold techniques enables thepractical realization of freeform funicular structures in precast concrete.
