title Civic Media Platforms and Participatory Urbanism: A Critical Reflection
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 10 - no. 2, 253-274
summary In this paper, we explicate our research on technology-mediated urban experience specific to two hyper-local tests in which the space of the ‘public’ is transformed into a virtual network by connective broadcasting. The first case study presents collective mapping in Rio de Janeiro toward increased civic engagement and sustainability, the second tests documentation of political demonstrations for strategic and archival purposes for Occupy Boston. Grouped under the term “participatory urbanism,” the projects intend to explore how an individual activates interstitial space (between the physical city and hovering networks, between public and private) by engaging technology and civic media to affect change in the built environment. The physical and virtual environments serve as reciprocal sources of information, engendering a collective practice of shared encounters. We investigate how such encounters of user-centered activity through mobile and web-based media support or implicate the perception and manipulation of the built environment over spans of time and locations, and will highlight qualitative elements of a mobile and web platform designed for successful civic engagement and participatory urbanism.

source SIGraDi 2012 [Proceedings of the 16th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Brasil - Fortaleza 13-16 November 2012, pp. 419-422
summary This article intends to investigate the possibilities of digital representation of Carioca Street in the Rio de Janeiro of 19th Century by a promenade of digital panoramas through the observator’s eye experience. To do this, it is necessary to develop 3d models and digital panoramas of the old city, based in a historical maps, and compare the panoramas of nowadays offered by the street view of the Google earth. We belive that in this way we can see architectural changes in Carioca Street at the same time which we can experience the old street again.

source Achten, Henri; Pavlicek, Jiri; Hulin, Jaroslav; Matejovska, Dana (eds.), Digital Physicality - Proceedings of the 30th eCAADe Conference - Volume 2 / ISBN 978-9-4912070-3-7, Czech Technical University in Prague, Faculty of Architecture (Czech Republic) 12-14 September 2012, pp. 469-477
summary The research presented further is part of the Digital Alberti research project, which aims to assess the infl uence of Leon Batista Alberti’s theory on Portuguese architecture, through the use of digital technologies. One of the project tasks implied computational and physical modelling of Alberti’s column system. Development of the computational model implied decoding Alberti’s treatise on architecture De re aedifi catoria into a consistent set of parameters and relationships, and then implementing these into generative parametric computer programs through visual programming language Grasshopper. This computational model is able to automatically generate physical models of classical columns according to Alberti’s canons. These digital models were then materialized through production of physical models, through rapid prototyping and digital fabrication technologies. Special attention is given to the CNC stone milling of a Corinthian capital.

title Modelagem paramétrica para o projeto e produção automatizados de uma peça de mobiliário: um exercício de aplicação [Parametric Design and Digital Fabrication of a Reception Desk: a design exercise]
source SIGraDi 2012 [Proceedings of the 16th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Brasil - Fortaleza 13-16 November 2012, pp. 561-565
summary This paper describes a design experiment of a reception desk. Automated procedures were used in the process: a parametric design generated the form and connections. Computer models and physical prototypes were produced in order to develop construction details and preview results. We compared this exercise with the method used to design Aviva Stadium in Dublin. It was possible to conclude that the use of a generative method along with automated procedures did not restrict creativity, allowing the quick exploration of multiple design alternatives.

source SIGraDi 2012 [Proceedings of the 16th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Brasil - Fortaleza 13-16 November 2012, pp. 144-148
summary Access to data capable of describing existing territorial dynamics is an indispensable condition to elaborate effective urban regulations, notwithstanding current difficulties to get reliable sources of information. Such difficulties are related to several factors. In terms of the technical obstacles, occasions where the data arrangement obstructs a sufficient cognition level by the user are recurrent. Information Design has helped to overcome such obstacles by using Geographic Information Systems. The article uses such techniques to adapt land prices data in Fortaleza in order to analyze the behavior of real estate market after the approval of a restrictive zoning regulation (ZEIS).

title Urban modelling for evaluating photovoltaic potential through solar radiation incidence
source SIGraDi 2020 [Proceedings of the 24th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISSN: 2318-6968] Online Conference 18 - 20 November 2020, pp. 455-463
summary This study aims to better ascertain the influence that urbanistic parameters exert on the production of solar photovoltaic energy regarding different contexts in the city. Modifications implemented between the years of 2012 and 2016, especially on variables such as Maximum Lot Coverage, Floor Area Ratio, and Setbacks, have been evaluated through virtual models that cover areas in three different city districts. Amongst other implications, an increase in the area occupied by the buildings, as well as a decrease in the distance between them, occurred, causing more mutual shading and the loss of the photovoltaic potential associated with the building envelope.

title Edible Infrastructures: Emergent Organizational Patterns for the Productive City
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.acadia.2012.511
source ACADIA 12: Synthetic Digital Ecologies [Proceedings of the 32nd Annual Conference of the Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA) ISBN 978-1-62407-267-3] San Francisco 18-21 October, 2012), pp. 511-526
summary Edible Infrastructures is an investigation into a projective mode of urbanism which considers food as an integral part of a city's metabolic infrastructure. Working with algorithms as design tools, we explore the generative potential of such a system to create an urban ecology that: provides for its residents via local, multi-scalar, distributed food production, reconnects urbanites with their food sources, and de-couples food costs from fossil fuels by limiting transportation at all levels, from source to table. The research is conducted through the building up of a sequence of algorithms, beginning with the ‘Settlement Simulation’, which couples consumers to productive surface area within a cellular automata type computational model. Topological analysis informs generative operations, as each stage builds on the output of the last. In this way we explore the hierarchical components for a new Productive City, including: the structure and programming of the urban circulatory network, an emergent urban morphology based around productive urban blocks, and opportunities for new architectural typologies. The resulting prototypical Productive City questions the underlying mechanisms that shape modern urban space and demonstrates the architectural potential of mathematical modeling and simulation in addressing complex urban spatial and programmatic challenges.

summary Design is one of the basic skills of every engineer. However until now design is only seen as a core course in Architecture studies and lately in Industrial Engineering studies. This paper reports about the development of a design course for all departments of a typical technical university. After a short overview of design teaching tradition, an inventory is presented of the different interpretation of design by the various departments. The course development is presented over two periods: 2012-2014, and 2014-2015. In between a major change was conducted. The course learning goals and student evaluations are presented. In the discussion we reflect on fundamental and practical problems that occur in design teaching for such a wide audience. Finally we draw conclusions on the changing role of design what is needed to give design the same status as mathematics in a technical curriculum.

title Behavioural Prototypes In Spatial Design Computation
source In Petruschat and Adenauer (eds), Neue Formen des Prototypings in Gestaltungsprozessen, Form+Zweck, Berlin, 2012
summary Architects by profession, Christian Derix and Asmund Gamlesæter are interested in expanding the capabilities of digital technology to inform, support and enrich the design process in architecture and spatial planning. The computational prototypes they develop range from form studies to visualization of complex processes in spatial planning such as movement behaviors of people in a city. They work analytically as well as generatively and the approach is deeply affected by the understanding that computing systems should not define solutions but offer creative freedom and create a symbiosis between the designer and the algorithmic intelligence. They are rather designed to help the designer view the design problem and consequences of decisions from different perspectives. Encouraging the designer to play through different narratives. They are rather tools for thinking through multiple solutions and allow the designer to play with the possibilities. The generation of the final design is inspired and validated by the tools but remains in the hands of the designer.

source SIGraDi 2012 [Proceedings of the 16th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Brasil - Fortaleza 13-16 November 2012, pp. 21-23
summary The objective is to verify the cybernetic philosophy of Hishino city, outlined by Kisho Kurokawa. The Cybernetics of city planning comprehended it in a systemic form, preoccupied with the communication between the elements, valued the process and the whole. Kurokawa used entropy, unity, probability and multiplicity on the traffic system. The idea was that, in traffic, there were never more than two possible pathways. The area was elaborated in three districts, on loop, binary system and zones of linear services. The concept was based on a network system, which evoked the connotation between connected parts, with equal importance and balance.
