title Three Dimensional Reconstitution of an Old Town from Historical Documents: Case of the Medina of Jijel in Algeria
source CAAD | INNOVATION | PRACTICE [6th International Conference Proceedings of the Arab Society for Computer Aided Architectural Design (ASCAAD 2012 / ISBN 978-99958-2-063-3], Manama (Kingdom of Bahrain), 21-23 February 2012, pp. 191; 285-303
summary The three-dimensional reconstitution of cities and urban tissues was the subject of several studies and researches. In order to obtain the acquisition of the geometry of architectural or urban sets, some studies are based on Photogrammetric or on computer vision. Others have focused on the development of tools of acquisition from a laser providing a 3D scatter plot. Some of them yet focused towards the development of CAD software. The automatic generation for morphological 3D representation based on the exploitation of the architectural knowledge basis is also an option. This type of work becomes more relevant and legitimate when it concerns old cities in state of ruin or more simply missing whose remains only prints or literary descriptions similar to our case study; the old town of Jijel that many people ignore its existence. The aim of this work is to achieve a 3D reconstitution of buildings of this town based on historical documents, mostly prints, digitized old maps and plans, as well as literary texts (tales of travelers, military records, and history books). The method developed can solve and generate possible urban volumes in the most frequent cases. The 3D model obtained, despite its geometric simplicity, can view the city from different angles and open new opportunities for research in history, architecture and town planning.

title Functionally Graded Architectural Detailing using Multi-Material Additive Manufacturing
source P. Janssen, P. Loh, A. Raonic, M. A. Schnabel (eds.), Protocols, Flows, and Glitches - Proceedings of the 22nd CAADRIA Conference, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, Suzhou, China, 5-8 April 2017, pp. 427-436
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2017.427
summary The paper presents a future architectural detailing strategy enabled by the design of functionally graded materials (FGM). In specific, our proposal suggests the possibility of removing mechanical fasteners and adhesives from joint details. This is achieved by combining the principles of interlocking joineries found in traditional timber structures and current Multi-Material Additive Manufacturing (MMAM) technology to materialise FGMs. FGM belongs to a class of advanced materials characterised by variation in properties as the dimension varies by combining two or more materials at a microscopic scale (Mahamood et al. 2012). FGM is ubiquitous in nature and, when properly designed, can exhibit superior performance characteristics compared to objects comprised of homogeneous material properties. With the aim of developing interlocking details with improved performance, reliability, and design flexibility, we focus on controlling material stiffness, joint fitting, and geometry through the design of the microscopic material layout. A case study design will be presented to illustrate the process.

title Parametric urbanism as digital methodology. An urban plan in Beijing
source FUTURE TRADITIONS [1st eCAADe Regional International Workshop Proceedings / ISBN 978-989-8527-03-5], University of Porto, Faculty of Architecture (Portugal), 4-5 April 2013, pp. 121-132
summary Evolution and innovation in architecture are intensely related to the rise and developments of technology. Within this context, it is possible to recognize how in recent decades this milieu has fostered the development of new methodologies for urban design and architectural practice, as is, for example, the Parameterization. This paper is focused on the subject of Parametric Urbanism: discussing / questioning the emergence of this new architectural methodology; addressing the factors that contributed to its appearance; and seeking to understand whether the parametric approach has benefits and whether it may or may not be a solution or of assistance to urban planning. The paper provides a brief literature review focused on parametric urbanism and then it presents a practical case study of parametric urbanism: an Urban Plan in Beijing, developed in an academic context, at the University École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in 2012. Having as base diverse examples of parametric urbanism, it is tried to identify/justify decisions defining principles and application guidance for this project. The conclusion presents the final considerations based on opposing the case study with the theoretical approach, seeking to clarify whether this new kind of urban design methodology, Parametric Urbanism, is or not viable.

summary The intention of this paper is to discuss the effort to spread knowledge and technology to a group of people (teachers, students and professionals), who would probably take much longer to have the chance to use new technologies as a design tool. Connecting two events called Road Show and Workshop, the paper shows the methods, processes and solutions achieved throughout different activities and its effects on the use of Digital fabrication and rapid prototyping as a design and materialization tools. In such case, it is a good example on how to spread the news and provide a starting point to make people more aware and train them to become future users of these technologies. The materialization of the results are shown.

summary Salient attributes of previously designed projects can be examined to understand how key parameters could inform current design practices. These parameters include gross floor area, number of stories, occupancy, material type, geographic location, seismicity, climatic influences, etc. Two informative analysis tools for intelligent design have been developed which can be used from preliminary planning stages to the final design of individual structures to district-wide developments. These tools can evaluate concurrent influences of these parameters on the built environment. The first is the Environmental Analysis Tool™ (EA Tool). The EA Tool quantifies the estimated equivalent carbon dioxide emissions of structural components. The second analysis tool is Parametric City Modeling (PCM). PCM estimates the usable area of a tower by estimating net floor area. These tools can also be applied to multiple buildings at a district scale to facilitate a new level of design in urban planning efforts. Design information embodied in the physical built environment finds new purpose in the informative prediction of performance at the on-set of digital design. Harvesting and mining data as a natural resource brings new potential to informed design. These concepts and subsequent tools are vital to building sustainable and efficient cities of the future.

source SIGraDi 2017 [Proceedings of the 21th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISBN: 978-956-227-439-5] Chile, Concepción 22 - 24 November 2017, pp.528-533
summary BIM technology is currently being implemented in the construction industry, though it is still underdeveloped in relation to Facility Management (FC) of extant buildings. There is a strong potential for future development due to the visualization and data analysis capabilities of this technology, amongst others (Becerik-Gerber, Jazizadeh, Li, & Calis, 2012). This research investigates how BIM can be implemented in existing buildings currently in operation. Using a public facility at the University of Bio-Bio as a case study, conclusions are drawn with respect the capabilities of BIM in order to optimize maintenance and operation of existing buildings.

source CAAD | INNOVATION | PRACTICE [6th International Conference Proceedings of the Arab Society for Computer Aided Architectural Design (ASCAAD 2012 / ISBN 978-99958-2-063-3], Manama (Kingdom of Bahrain), 21-23 February 2012, pp. 49-68
summary It is noted that architects need new and quick methods designing the historic architectural styles, as well as restoring the historical urban areas particularly the Islamic ones. These designs and restorations should adapt to the basics of the Islamic style used; general concept, module and features. Smart Geometry provides advanced design concepts and increases alternative variations. Parametric design softwares also add more rules and relations on the design process. Obviously, the Islamic module and proportions are used as design generators that result in extracting a number of alternatives easily in a little time. Generative Components (GC) is the parametric software used to achieve the desired objectives of this research.

source SIGraDi 2012 [Proceedings of the 16th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Brasil - Fortaleza 13-16 November 2012, pp. 602-606
summary This paper highlights the different interplays between structural and non-structural parts in building artifact as the result of modes of building processes and massing. The massing is understood as processes of assembling material into a body through which we identify with the building physically. In the last decade architecture discipline as the result of technological inventions has faced shifts in the design processes, massing processes and topology of the artefact. In which we witness integral coexistence between the structural and non-structural elements of building. In this paper the seeds of this integral interplay is scrutinised through the study of design and massing processes of a multi-functional pavilion prototype as a case study.

title Progress Towards Multi-Criteria Design Optimisation Using Designscript With Smart Form, Robot Structural Analysis and Ecotect Building Performance Analysis"
source ACADIA 12: Synthetic Digital Ecologies [Proceedings of the 32nd Annual Conference of the Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA) ISBN 978-1-62407-267-3] San Francisco 18-21 October, 2012), pp. 47-56

summary Important progress towards the development of a system that enables multi-criteria design optimisation has recently been demonstrated during a research collaboration between Autodesk’s DesignScript development team, the University of Bath and the engineering consultancy Buro Happold. This involved integrating aspects of the Robot Structural Analysis application, aspects of the Ecotect building performance application and a specialist form finding solver called SMART Form (developed by Buro Happold) with DesignScript to create a single computation environment. This environment is intended for the generation and evaluation of building designs against both structural and building performance criteria, with the aim of expediently supporting computational optimisation and decision making processes that integrate across multiple design and engineering disciplines. A framework was developed to enable the integration of modeling environments with analysis and process control, based on the authors’ case studies and experience of applied performance driven design in practice. This more generalised approach (implemented in DesignScript) enables different designers and engineers to selectively configure geometry definition, form finding, analysis and simulation tools in an open-ended system without enforcing any predefined workflows or anticipating specific design strategies and allows for a full range of optimisation and decision making processes to be explored. This system has been demonstrated to practitioners during the Design Modeling Symposium, Berlin in 2011 and feedback from this has suggested further development.

summary The problem considered in this paper is: “In what way do we design?” This paper concentrates on the early creative stages of the design process during which the designer gradually gathers the information about the problem, applying appropriate rules, tools and media. If the tools are chosen as a starting point of consideration, designing may be analysed as manual or digital. If we chose the medium - design may be considered as physical or virtual. The main thesis of this paper is that designing proceeds somewhere in between. “Somewhere in between” means the space where manual, digital, virtual are mixing, overlapping, and transforming one into the other. As a case study the process of designing of blurred function object is presented. In this experimental design studio we paid particular attention to the design process and we searched for the answer to the following questions: how to find an idea (what tools/media are helpful), how to express, fi x and transform that idea? In the paper the examples of students’ work will be presented and discussed.

summary The paper presents a series of design build studio that investigate the role of waste as building material. The series develops proposals for constructions that use CAAD and CAM tools in combination with traditional fabrication tools to design and build an installation out of waste materials. The fi rst construction uses waste to create two installations that questions human consumption, The second project is a future project, that intends the use of waste as an actual building material. Recycling is in the process of becoming an integral part of sustainable architecture. However, there are very few digital design projects that use re-used or recycled materials in combination with their architectural and aesthetic qualities and potentials. The potential of such an investigation is explored within these design build studios. What is junk? What is a building material? What are the aesthetics of junk?

summary This paper explores the sonic characteristics of urban spaces, with the application of apprehending acoustic space and form theory. The theory defines auditory spaces as acoustical arenas, which are spaces defi ned and delineated by sonic events. Historically, cities were built around a soundmark, for example, the resonance of a church bell or propagation of a calling for prayer, or a factory horn. Anyone living beyond the horizon of this soundmark was not considered citizens of that town. Furthermore, the volume of urban sonic arenas depends on natural. Digital simulation is necessary to visualize the ephemeral and temporal nature of sound, within a dynamic immersive environment like urban spaces. This paper digitally analyses the different morphologies of old cities and forms of growth in relation to the sound propagation and ecological effects. An experiment is conducted with the aid of an ancient North-African city model, exposed to a point cloud agent system. By analysing how the sound propagates from the known soundmark through the urban fabric, with the wind pressure interference; the paper compares the theoretical concept of soundmarks and the known perimeter of the ancient city

summary As a consequence of the emergence of models based on the notions of disequilibrium and uncertainty, cities have being seen as intrinsically complex nonlinear systems subject to sociospatial changes that occur, simutaneously, in many scales. The present paper analyzes three models to simulate urban segregation dynamics. Schelling’s model shows how can emerge unexpected highly segregated global patterns from local preferences to live close to each other. Epstein and Axtell’s model reveals its pedagogic role through the manipulation of specific parameters. Portugali’s model emphasizes the cognition and learning capabilities of agents to recognize patterns and change their behaviour accordingly.
