title Data Sharing for Sustainable Building Assessment

summary Sustainable design assessment requires information, which is aggregated from different phases of a building design, and evaluated according to criteria specified in a ‘sustainable building rating system.’ In the architecture engineering and construction (AEC) domain much of the necessary information is available through open source data standards such as Industry Foundation Classes (IFC). However, no single standard that provides support for sustainability assessment completely suffices as a data structure. This paper explores the augmentation of the Construction Operations Building information exchange (COBie) model, as an intermediary data structure, to bridge between requirements of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system and a building information model. Development of a general framework for data sharing and information management for LEED assessments is illustrated through an implementation of a prototype using functional databases.The prototype checks and augments available data as needed, which is used to populate LEED submission templates.

summary Point cloud processing has come a long way in the past years. Advances in computer vision (CV) and machine learning (ML) have enabled its automated recognition and processing. However, few of those developments have made it through to the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry. Here, optimizing those workflows can reduce time spent on early-phase projects, which otherwise could be spent on developing innovative design solutions. Simplifying the processing of building point cloud scans makes it more accessible and therefore, usable for design, planning and decision-making. Furthermore, automated processing can also ensure that point clouds are processed consistently and accurately, reducing the potential for human error. This work is part of a larger effort to optimize early-phase design processes to promote the reuse of vacant buildings. It focuses on technical solutions to automate the reconstruction of point clouds into a digital twin as a simplified solid 3D element model. In this paper, various ML approaches, among others KPConv Thomas et al. (2019), ShapeConv Cao et al. (2021) and Mask-RCNN He et al. (2017), are compared in their ability to apply semantic as well as instance segmentation to point clouds. Further it relies on the S3DIS Armeni et al. (2017), NYU v2 Silberman et al. (2012) and Matterport Ramakrishnan et al. (2021) data sets for training. Here, the authors aim to establish a workflow that reduces the effort for users to process their point clouds and obtain object-based models. The findings of this research show that although pure point cloud-based ML models enable a greater degree of flexibility, they incur a high computational cost. We found, that using RGB-D images for classifications and segmentation simplifies the complexity of the ML model but leads to additional requirements for the data set. These can be mitigated in the initial process of capturing the building or by extracting the depth data from the point cloud.

summary This paper explores the interaction and different types of representations enacted in a BIM-enabled environment that involves interdisciplinary and intradisciplinary collaboration among teams of designers in an architectural praxis context. By means of an ethnographic study conducted over the course of an architectural project from schematic design to construction documents, including five disciplines and twenty subjects, genres of communication interfaces are identified between BIM-authoring tools, sketching interfaces and domain specific analysis tools, and explored within the realm of distributed cognition. Implications in architectural practice and education are then discussed.

summary Architecture today has come to its most complex form. There are lots of criteria such as fi re safety, structure, sustainability etc… which must be controlled by the designers. To improve the performance and accessibility of buildings, governing bodies publish different codes for each of the different criteria. Buildings must comply with these codes to get a permit for construction. The checking of the buildings according the codes is done manually by code offi cials. This process is time consuming, high in cost and prone to errors. To remedy this problem by using the tools like BIM and AI, systems that can automatically check the code compliance of projects are being developed. In this paper we provide an overview of the structures and capabilities of these systems and present the automated code compliance checking system that we develop for checking building models against some parts of the Turkish Fire Codes.

summary This paper presents the development and implementation of an automatic sustainable assessment prototype using functional databases. For the practical purpose, we use Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) as the exemplar standard to demonstrate the integrative process from building information aggregation to final evaluation. We start with a Building Information model, and use Construction Operations Building Information Exchange (COBie) as a bridge to integrate LEED requirements. At present, the process of sustainable building assessment requires information exchange from various building professionals. However, there is no procedure to manage, or use, information pertaining to sustainability. In our research, we translate rules from LEED into computable formulas and develop a prototype application to produce templates for LEED submission.

summary The research project „BIM – Potentials and Barriers“ aims to analyse the existing practice concerning BIM and the barriers for the implementation of this approach in Germany. Accompanied by an ‚advisory board’ with nameable representatives from practice, the public authorities and AEC associations, a set of hypotheses has been elaborated that could be evaluated by a detailed survey. Based on the detection of relevant stakeholders, the survey fi rst tries to disclose the real situation of how BIM is currently used in practice. Furthermore the potentials of the application of BIM in the different processes and target groups are determined as well as the barriers and constraints. Thereby the enhancement of the considered thematic areas is an important solution approach of the project: besides technological aspects, the analysis is also focusing on contracting, norms and processes as well as education, knowledge and role perception.

summary Nowadays, the BIM (Building Information Modelling) paradigm is a central topic in the CAAD community. Next to the commercial solutions, the IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) have emerged as the best open standard candidate for BIM interoperability. Despite the efforts of the community for promoting IFC over the last 15 years, it seems that its practical adoption in real-life projects has been very limited. The goal of this article is to explore how useful IFC can be today and to provide the reader with some advice for an effective adoption of IFC. Over the last year, we have conducted a project aiming at acquiring a sound understanding of IFC. It was made of two complementary investigations. On one hand, we have focused on the commercial modelling tools and the IFC support they were offering. On the other hand, we have focused on the IFC-based software developments. We have developed a tool converting IFC files into a dedicated thermal assessment based model. We will summarise the experience we have acquired in this project into some advice for users migrating to IFC. Our goal is to confront the practical aspects of the IFC developments, with both the theoretical ambitions and the commercial support currently available.

title Simulation Heuristics for Urban Design

summary Designing simulations for urban design not only requires explicit performance criteria of planning standards but a synthesis of implicit design objectives, that we will call ‘purpose rules’, with computational approaches. The former would at most lead to automation of the existing planning processes for speed and evaluation, the latter to an understanding of perceived urban qualities and their effect on the planning of cities. In order to transform purpose rules into encoded principles we argue that the focus should not be on defining parametric constraints and quantities, but on aligning the perceptual properties of the simulations with the strategies of the stakeholders (planner/ urban designer/ architect/ developer/ community). Using projects from the Computational Design and Research group at Aedas [CDR] as examples, this chapter will discuss how an open framework of lightweight applications with simple functionality can be integrated into the design and planning process by using computational simulations as urban design heuristics.

title Digital Masterplanning: Computing Urban Design

summary The digital revolution has finally reached urban design as one of the last design communities not very familiar with computing. This is despite the city and geography being the natural fields for systems analogy and digital models of mathematical and statistical simulation were developed in the 60s and 70s for urban planning, much before industrial or architectural design. The recent arrival of urban design simulations is however not as innovative and radical as their 50 year old counterparts since they use computing solely for policy visualization, quantity evaluation or pattern generation. The Computational Design and Research Group [CDR] at Aedas|R&D started in 2007 to develop an open platform of lightweight applications – Digital Masterplanning – in collaboration with partners from academia and industry to provide methods for urban design, based on computational methods called meta-heuristic algorithms. An attempt to encode empirical knowledge and design assumptions into simulations is described where designers can assemble the resulting applications according to scales and brief into custom workflows.

summary This paper reports on the initial findings of an Undergraduate Research on Social Housing Program implemented in the city of Limeira, making use of a Building Information Modeling platform as a methodological procedure. The research was designed to enable students to better understand BIM in a hands-on, collaborative environment. A virtual information model of Housing Units and Housing Complex was created, and represents their real physical building components. The initial results portray BIM as especially useful to Civil Construction students, as fostering an integral environment where students are readily enabled to synthesize the knowledge of the art of construction.

summary The Emergent Reefs project thrives on the potential that emerge from a coherent utilization of the environment’s inherent ecological structure for its own transformation and evolution, using an approach based on digitally simulated ecosystems and sparkled by the possibilities and potential of large-scale 3D printing technology. Considering tourism as an inevitable vector of environmental change, the project aims to direct its potential and economic resources towards a positive transformation, providing a material substrate for the human-marine ecosystem integration with the realization of spaces for an underwater sculpture exhibition. Such structures will also provide a pattern of cavities which, expanding the gradient of microenvironmental conditions, break the existing homogeneity in favor of systemic heterogeneity, providing the spatial and material preconditions for the repopulation of marine biodiversity. Starting from a digital simulation of a synthetic local ecosystem, a generative technique based on multi-agent systems and continuous cellular automata (put into practice from the theoretical premises in Alan Turing’s paper “The Chemical basis of Morphogenesis” through reaction-diffusion simulation) is implemented in a voxel field at several scales giving the project a twofold quality: the implementation of reaction diffusion generative strategy within a non-isotropic 3-dimensional field and integration with the large-scale 3D printing fabrication system patented by D-Shape®. Out of these assumptions and in the intent of exploiting the expressive and tectonic potential of such technology, the project has been tackled exploring voxel-based generative strategies. Working with a discrete lattice eases the simulation of complex systems and processes across multiple scales (including non-linear simulations such as Computational Fluid-Dynamics) starting from local interactions using, for instance, algorithms based on cellular automata, which then can be translated directly to the physical production system. The purpose of Emergent-Reefs is to establish, through strategies based on computational design tools and machine-based fabrication, seamless relationships between three different aspects of the architectural process: generation, simulation and construction, which in the case of the used technology can be specified as guided growth.

summary Parametric and generative modelling methods are ways in which computer models are made more flexible, and of formalising domain-specific knowledge. At present, no open standard exists for the interchange of parametric and generative information. The Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) which are an open standard for interoperability in building information models is presented as the base for an open standard in parametric modelling. The advantage of allowing parametric and generative representations are that the early design process can allow for more iteration and changes can be implemented quicker than with traditional models. This paper begins with a formal definition of what constitutes to be parametric and generative modelling methods and then proceeds to describe an open standard in which the interchange of components could be implemented. As an illustrative example of generative design, Frazer’s ‘Reptiles’ project from 1968 is reinterpreted.

summary This paper outlines a research project that explores the participation in, and perception of, advanced technologies in architectural professional practice through a sociotechnical lens and presents empirical research findings from an online survey distributed to employees in five large-scale architectural practices in Sydney, Australia. This argues that while the computational design paradigm might be well accepted, understood, and documented in academic research contexts, the extent and ways that computational design thinking and methods are put-into-practice has to date been less explored. In engineering and construction, technology adoption studies since the mid 1990s have measured information technology (IT) use (Howard et al. 1998; Samuelson and Björk 2013). In architecture, research has also focused on quantifying IT use (Cichocka 2017), as well as the examination of specific practices such as building information modelling (BIM) (Cardoso Llach 2017; Herr and Fischer 2017; Son et al. 2015). With the notable exceptions of Daniel Cardoso Llach (2015; 2017) and Yanni Loukissas (2012), few scholars have explored advanced technologies in architectural practice from a sociotechnical perspective. This paper argues that a sociotechnical lens can net valuable insights into advanced technology engagement to inform pedagogical approaches in architectural education as well as strategies for continuing professional development.

summary Plaster has been a fundamental material in numerous interior and exterior applications in architectural construction due to its fire-resistant properties and capabilities for intricate detailing. Moreover, prior to the widespread adoption of computer-aided design tools, plaster played a crucial role in historic preservation and architectural education (Mankouche & Schulte, 2012). While the use of decorative plaster elements in architectural construction has waned in popularity, the renewed interest in plaster within the context of advanced robotic fabrication offers a compelling basis for research. This paper presents an investigation into robotic plaster carving for adding detail and texture to plaster surfaces. Within the scope of this study, we identify and systematically examine various fabrication and material parameters for emergent geometries and fabrication defects, subsequently formalizing this robotic workflow for diverse applications in construction and crafts. Among these parameters, we primarily concentrate on toolpath geometry, tool orientation, carving speed, carving profile, and aggregation of carving strokes. Through this bottom-up approach, our objective is to enhance the understanding of tool-material interaction during the fabrication process and achieve improved control over the resulting artifact. Building on these insights, we demonstrate how the proposed robotic plaster carving workflow can be employed for subtractive surface detailing in architectural construction and digital crafts.

summary In the time since European architects first began using computers in the building design process, the digital revolution has transformed how architects use planning tools completely. Today, digital tools are an indispensable part of planning practice. Besides a wide variety of digital modeling tools, parametric tools offer architects diverse options for generating cybernetic building models as BIM-models or homeostatic parametric geometry models. Cybernetic models help us to describe the buildings as a system and can improve planning efficiency. The aim of planning is to construct or fabricate an end result. The integration of digital fabrication methods in the digital chain is a fundamental goal if architects are to benefit from the progressive development of computer controlled machine tools. Fabrication integrated digital models can automate the planning process up to the production stage and enable the efficient fabrication of building components. The increased efficiency of planning and fabrication has facilitated a growing proliferation of buildings of increasing geometric complexity. Computers can open a door to the realization of new forms, spaces and construction systems to architects that understand the principles of fabrication-integrated cybernetic modeling.

summary Digital architecture is at an exciting but challenging stage of its development. Past decades have witnessed important developments in computer-generated architectural representations. These tools have complemented and, in some cases, superseded the traditional forms of design and communication. In parallel with progress in computer graphics, advances in computer generated architectural representations have evolved to deliver photorealistic computer generated imagery. However, there is evidence to suggest that these advances have not significantly enhanced collaborative practices. It was acknowledged that to address the fragmentation of the industry, a fundamental change to deliver digital architecture was needed. Dealing with the requirements for an improved co-ordination and co-operation between designers and other stakeholders to encourage more integration has therefore become a central issue in the last decade. It was also recognised that significantly more intelligence needs to be brought to bear on the decision-making process if the targets set by the sustainability agenda are to be met. The quest for an improved quality of information and decision making has shifted the emphasis from computer-generated imagery to integrated building information. The recent emergence of building information modelling (BIM) constitutes one of the most exciting developments in the field. It was suggested that BIM will deliver considerable sophistication and judgment in decision-making. This keynote speech seeks to examine the implications of the transition of digital architecture from simulation and visualisation to information modelling. It aims to shed light on the methodological and technological challenges facing practitioners, researchers, and software developers, as a result of the early adoption of BIM.
