summary Edible Infrastructures is an investigation into a projective mode of urbanism which considers food as an integral part of a city's metabolic infrastructure. Working with algorithms as design tools, we explore the generative potential of such a system to create an urban ecology that: provides for its residents via local, multi-scalar, distributed food production, reconnects urbanites with their food sources, and de-couples food costs from fossil fuels by limiting transportation at all levels, from source to table. The research is conducted through the building up of a sequence of algorithms, beginning with the ‘Settlement Simulation’, which couples consumers to productive surface area within a cellular automata type computational model. Topological analysis informs generative operations, as each stage builds on the output of the last. In this way we explore the hierarchical components for a new Productive City, including: the structure and programming of the urban circulatory network, an emergent urban morphology based around productive urban blocks, and opportunities for new architectural typologies. The resulting prototypical Productive City questions the underlying mechanisms that shape modern urban space and demonstrates the architectural potential of mathematical modeling and simulation in addressing complex urban spatial and programmatic challenges.

summary This paper analyses a hybrid design approach; how physical and digital processes can inform each other in a multivalent design cycle. It describes the design of origami-inspired window shades, part of the Shaping Light project that explores how adjustable surface structures can modulate light levels and heat gain in response to the changing seasons. The screen uses sloped surfaces to diffuse light and create apertures that close when the screen is stretched and open when the screen is folded. The project complements digital methods for pattern proportioning and kinetic simulation with manual manipulation to generate 3D folding motifs and refi ne assemblies. Physical prototypes can shape digital refi nement by revealing visual and structural characteristics of materials, along with joint and production considerations. Physical models for simulating sunny and cloudy daylighting conditions provide a direct connection between spatial confi guration and visual effects. The paper concludes with guidelines for material-based digital-analog creation.

summary The Emergent Reefs project thrives on the potential that emerge from a coherent utilization of the environment’s inherent ecological structure for its own transformation and evolution, using an approach based on digitally simulated ecosystems and sparkled by the possibilities and potential of large-scale 3D printing technology. Considering tourism as an inevitable vector of environmental change, the project aims to direct its potential and economic resources towards a positive transformation, providing a material substrate for the human-marine ecosystem integration with the realization of spaces for an underwater sculpture exhibition. Such structures will also provide a pattern of cavities which, expanding the gradient of microenvironmental conditions, break the existing homogeneity in favor of systemic heterogeneity, providing the spatial and material preconditions for the repopulation of marine biodiversity. Starting from a digital simulation of a synthetic local ecosystem, a generative technique based on multi-agent systems and continuous cellular automata (put into practice from the theoretical premises in Alan Turing’s paper “The Chemical basis of Morphogenesis” through reaction-diffusion simulation) is implemented in a voxel field at several scales giving the project a twofold quality: the implementation of reaction diffusion generative strategy within a non-isotropic 3-dimensional field and integration with the large-scale 3D printing fabrication system patented by D-Shape®. Out of these assumptions and in the intent of exploiting the expressive and tectonic potential of such technology, the project has been tackled exploring voxel-based generative strategies. Working with a discrete lattice eases the simulation of complex systems and processes across multiple scales (including non-linear simulations such as Computational Fluid-Dynamics) starting from local interactions using, for instance, algorithms based on cellular automata, which then can be translated directly to the physical production system. The purpose of Emergent-Reefs is to establish, through strategies based on computational design tools and machine-based fabrication, seamless relationships between three different aspects of the architectural process: generation, simulation and construction, which in the case of the used technology can be specified as guided growth.

summary Creating architectural form requires much more than a moment of inspiration; it requires understanding form in its whole structure. In teaching architecture aiming for the architectural design a group of strategies is needed to prepare students for the creative process. In this process it begins with issues such as the geometry allows the students redeem their prior knowledge. This paper compares, in two different contexts of the initial stages of architectural teaching process, the results of activities of digital graphic representation of architectural structures. These activities are supported by the analysis of shape grammar in promoting the learning process in a comprehensive manner such as suggested by Wertheimer.

summary This paper presents and discusses a process of transferring the main features of a piece of music such as structure, notes etc., to a primarily spatial construction in architecture. The main objective of this effort was to convert the linearity of time during the hearing of a musical piece into a continuous pathway and an architectural stroll on a given site. To this end, the musical piece is used as a source of data, which, with the use of developed algorithms, are converted into spatial data. A purely instrumental piece, “Air,” from the suite for strings in D major by Bach, provided the source data used in the design of Park D, a section of a Cultural Park in the suburbs of Athens, Greece. The developed algorithms presented in the paper include: a) an algorithm for generating the shape of the path and the space defi ning elements along the path, and b) an algorithm that generates the geometry of four harmonographic structures.

summary The purpose of Emergent-Reefs is to establish, through computational design strategies and machine-based fabrication, seamless relationships between three different aspects of the architectural process: generation, simulation and construction, with the intent of exploiting the expressive and tectonic potential of D-Shape technology for underwater reef formations as a design response to coastal erosion. summary The concepts and applications of Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD) have a predominant presence and impact on architectural design innovation and creativity. ASCAAD, in its 6th international conference, invited the learnt society of academics, researchers and professionals to debate the ubiquitous emerging role of CAAD in underpinning innovative design thinking processes and research in design education. The conference theme covered the following issues:  Computational research in design pedagogy and in practice  Intelligent agents, generative and parametric design  Building Information Modeling and Computer-supported design collaboration  Ubiquitous computing and interactive environments  Urban/ City/ regional planning and digital Modeling  Digital tools in design and construction  Mass customization Selected papers have been updated in this publication to reflect the constant quest to balance architectural thinking with operative techniques. It is well acknowledged that the advent of computation and information technology had profoundly altered architectural thinking. Design software and numerical fabrication have recast the role of form giving and shaping environments in architecture and opened up unprecedented opportunities of investigation and links with other scientific domains such as biomimcry, parametric design and modeling of urban and building environments. In this issue authors suggest a continuum between architectural analytical thinking and CAAD systems. Looking at the collaboration between authors of various backgrounds also strengthens this narrative that architecture is expanding beyond its traditional enquiry into historical and theoretical aspects into the world of multi-desciplinarity. It is evident from the diverse publications that CAAD is designed and utilized to expand the architectural pedagogy and practice into initiating and opening up the exploratory grounds of creation and productivity in design.

summary Kukje Art Center, Seoul’s new gallery designed by SO-IL, features a totally bespoke chainmail mesh system (submission note: the authors are not affiliated with SO-IL). A single sheet of complex-curved, tensioned mesh, made up of interlocking 40mm diameter stainless steel rings, wraps the building. This paper discusses the stages of a feedback loop process employed by the authors to refine a digital model of the mesh. The mesh’s perimeter attachment system does not prescribe ring locations, allowing the mesh to form find for itself during installation. As a result, the digital model must capture the behavioral tendencies of the mesh as it negotiates the building’s geometry. Paramount in meeting this challenge was the use of physical mockups. At each stage of the feedback loop process, the working digital model was used to develop a physical mockup of increased scale and complexity, and this mockup was used to refine the digital model. Ultimately, the model output of a mesh relaxation algorithm was used as the basis for engineering simulations and predictions of the mesh vertical ringcount needed at specific locations around the building. Mesh vertical ringcount predictions are validated relative to a 1:1 mockup and the installed Kukje Art Center mesh.

summary The intention of this research is to develop a design system for geometrically complex passive houses. Research focuses especially on the link-up of the CAAD (Computer-aided architectural design) and the CAM process (Computer-aided manufacturing) and deals only with timber structures. The aim of the project is to develop a system that would automate a creation of the computer model of the geometrically complex timber structures and link it to fabrication process. It should be possible to use the system for houses of the size of a family house up to an apartment house. The advantages of the system ought to be the fabrication preciseness, economical availability, high speed of construction, eco-friendliness and above all absence of geometrical constraints.

summary This paper will demonstrate two effective facade rationalisation patterns developed at Gehry Technologies for mitigating the tradeoffs between project constructability constraints vs. project aesthetic constraints. The two Case-Studies will present, fi rstly a method for dealing with large amounts of component instantiations and second with the economical delivery of complex project geometry through panelling. Both projects use design technology as a strategy for the integration of specialized knowledge and trades, through an effective use of information technology. The Case Studies will present the development of the Gridshell Digital Mock-Up of the Yas Island Marina Hotel in Abu Dhabi designed by Asymptote Architects and secondly the Museo Soumaya facade system in Mexico City designed by Fernando Romero LAR. This document will report the development process for obtaining relevant construction information, essential for the assembly of the facade systems by a third-party sub-contractor in support of the facade system coordination. The report concludes on the implementations of bespoke tools in support of the coordination and geometry description tasks. The tailored tool making process extends the parametric modelling system Digital Project™ in the design support role of obtaining aesthetically pleasing decompositions of the buildings Master Design Surface MDS into feasible constructible components.

title Bending curvature: A design tool for interactive complexity

summary Bending is a phenomenon that occurs with great frequency due to the presence of natural forces like gravity, wind. It occurs whenever an element is subjected to an external load applied perpendicularly to its longitudinal axis. Every known element, independently of its stiffness, exhibits certain amount of bending. This paper explores this phenomenon not as a failure mode to provide tolerance for, but as a tool to design with. The design research presented here emerged from a combination of digital explorations calibrated through analogue experiments of bending rods. The aim was to create a model that would incorporate the interaction between bending rods and the transfer of forces. Rods were connected to each other with rings that allowed for certain degree of freedom, though limiting them to be in contact with each other at all time. The rods started bending in various planes; their curvature is negotiated with that of their neighbours and thus a process of self-organisation with multiple parameters was present until equilibrium was attained. Intrigued by this observation, this research seeks to look at bending as a possible design tool. Understanding the behaviour of a single element in its simplex situation and simulating this behaviour in a computational environment has been the starting point for building up a model where complexity is built progressively as a result of local interactions among several bending rods.

summary This paper positions the development and performance of a responsive acoustic envelope system, called Resonant Chamber, within significant discourses in ecology, systems theory and cybernetics. The project is developed through two dominant threads. First, the synthetic design process that entails engaging simultaneous computational and physical investigations which inform each other through various feedback and control regimes - from simulation and testing frameworks to material limits and behaviors to geometric, technological and manufacturing limitations or constraints. Second, the paper elaborates on the system's embedded sensing, communication, feedback and actuation system that transforms its performance to a kinetic, responsive environment that opens up possibilities for active acoustic control, as well as open-ended interaction and play with inhabitants. Within this paradigm, the designer operates through an adaptive mode, between control and the dynamic shaping of possibilities within digital, physical and effective logics, constraints and opportunities.

title Agent-Based Social Pedestrian Simulation for the Validation of Urban Planning Recommendations

summary The goal of this project is a deeper understanding of the mechanisms that shape a city with a focus on pedestrian flow. Pedestrian flow reveals the use of space, the capacity and use of transportation and has an impact on the health of people. Movement patterns of pedestrians are a topic in many related fields like transportation planning, computer graphics and sociology. This project augments the simulation of pedestrian decision processes by taking into account the preferences for surrounding factors like additional points of interests and how pedestrians interact along their path with other pedestrians in a social manner. The goal of this project is to analyse urban planning configurations and to give designers and decision makers a tool to measure the amount of people walking and therefore define the health of a society, finding places of social interaction and improving social coherence in neighbourhoods.

summary We argue that the prevalence of continuous flat floor surfaces in architecture is comprehensible but fallacious, and that this chimaera can be overcome through studying and employing the sculptural potential of algebraic surfaces which suggest spatial possibilities that enrich designers’ vocabulary enormously. We continue, deepen and extend research the basics and early results of which were presented at the last two eCAADe conferences in Istanbul and Zürich. We present and discuss a university-based experimental design and research project that demonstrates how Algebraic Surfaces can drastically amplify the so far only tentative exploration of the possibilities of non-fl at fl oor surfaces in Architecture.

title A New Palladian Shape Grammar

summary The following paper describes a shape grammar that recreates Palladian villas.A Palladian grammar was originally proposed by Stiny and Mitchell. However, this alternative grammar uses different parametric shape rules and methodology to test the hypothesis that different grammars can generate the same corpus of designs.The formalism is then implemented using a computerised design tool.The grammar includes subdivision rules that allow for a more economical formulation.A new corpus of solutions is explored and the derivation is compared with the original Palladian grammar. The project is part of wider research aimed at formulating a generic housing grammar.

summary GENE_ARCH is a Generative Design System that combines Pareto Genetic Algorithms with an advanced building energy simulation engine. This work explores its integration with a Shape Grammar, acting as GENE_ARCH’s shape generation module. The urban patio house typology is readdressed in a contemporary context, both by improving its energy-effi ciency standards, and by rethinking its role in the genesis of high-density urban areas, while respecting its specifi c spatial organization and cultural grounding. Field work was carried out in Marrakesh, surveying a number of patio houses which became the Corpus of Design, from where a Shape Grammar was extracted. The computational implementation of the patio house grammar was done within GENE_ARCH. The resulting program was able to generate new, alternative patio houses designs that were more energy effi cient, while respecting the traditional rules captured from the analysis of existing houses. After the computational system was fully implemented, it was possible to complete different sets of experiments. The first experiments kept more restrained rules, thus generating new designs that closer resembled the existing ones. The progressive relaxation of rules and constraints allowed for a larger number of variations to emerge. Analysis of energy results provide insight into the main patterns resulting from the evolutionary search processes, namely in terms of form factors of generated solutions, and urban densities achieved.

summary This paper develops a methodological approach for use in design practice which combines an external simulation tool (EnergyPlus™) with an evo-lutionary optimisation strategy for the form-finding of complex fenestra-tion systems. On one hand, based on previous research, it presents a novel approach for the shape morphogenesis that exploits a generative algorithm technique to control a limited set of parameters whilst on the other hand it facilitates the integration of a simulation tool capable of handling increasing levels of complexity with greater data interoperabil-ity. In doing so it will argue the heuristic potential of the proposed meth-od in aiding the designers’ decision making whilst increasing the formal possibilities of their final design solutions.

O aim of this study is to apply the grammar of the analytical form fountains in the city of Ouro Preto - MG to obtain primitive forms, in order to allow a deeper analysis and scientific background, about their design and ornamentation, in order to help understand the identification of ornaments of Baroque architecture.
